Ten alleged members and associates of the MS-13 gang were charged with federal extortion and conspiracy charges, the U.S. Department of Justice said Tuesday.
Five more were charged for reentering the U.S. illegally.
Thirteen suspects were arrested in Ohio and Indiana Tuesday. Two remain fugitives, according to a news release.
“With more than 10,000 members across 40 states, MS-13 is one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the United States today,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said.
“MS-13 members have killed children and pregnant women, extorted immigrant-owned businesses, and trafficked underage girls to sell them for sex.”
Sessions said the Department of Justice will be “relentless” in reducing crime under President Trump’s directive.
“Today’s charges are our next step toward making this country safer by taking MS-13 off our streets for good,” he said.
The notoriously violent MS-13 gang is the only street gang to be declared a “transnational criminal organization,” earning that designation from the U.S. government in 2012.
MS-13 claims more than 10,000 members and associates. The group operates in 40 states, including Ohio.
The indictment alleges that 10 defendants “conspired to commit extortion through the use of threatened or actual force, violence or fear to intimidate their victims into paying money to the defendants and their co-conspirators.”
The cash was usually sent by wire transfer or through intermediaries to MS-13 associates in El Salvador and elsewhere, furthering the gang’s criminal activities in El Salvador and the United States, the DOJ said.
The defendants extorted their victims and used the proceeds to purchase cellphones, narcotics and weapons. Members also funneled cash behind bars to financially support incarcerated members.
The offenses are punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
Those charged with illegally re-entering the U.S. after having been previously deported face up to two years in prison.
