The Falcons' billion-dollar stadium will have a Chick-fil-A that's almost never open

As expected, the internet had jokes about the Chick-fil-A at Mercedes-Benz being closed on Sundays
by Sean Wagner-McGough
@seanjwagner

The Atlanta Falcons' new billion-dollar stadium features a Chick-fil-A, but if you're planning to attend a Falcons home game during the upcoming season, its highly unlikely you'll be able to eat there. That's because the Chick-fil-A won't even be open.
That's right. The Chick-fil-A inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium won't be made available to Falcons fans because none of its locations are allowed to be open on Sundays.

That's according to ESPN's Darren Rovell:

The franchise famous for its chicken sandwich is closed on Sundays, and only one of the team's eight home games isn't on a Sunday -- a Thursday night matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Dec. 7.

A source said the digital signage in the Chick-fil-A stand will be flipped when the stand is closed and it will be used by stadium concessionaire Levy to sell other nonbranded food and beverage items.

"Our founder, Truett Cathy, made the decision to close on Sundays in 1946 when he opened his first restaurant in Hapeville, Georgia," the company explains on its website. "Having worked seven days a week in restaurants open 24 hours, Truett saw the importance of closing on Sundays so that he and his employees could set aside one day to rest and worship if they choose -- a practice we uphold today."

So then, why did the Falcons even want a Chick-fil-A inside their new stadium? It's worth noting that Mercedes-Benz Stadium will be the venue for other sporting events like Atlanta United FC home games, college football games, and concerts. So, there will be other chances for people to eat Chick-fil-A inside the stadium.

Still, as For The Win noted, the Falcons "totally 28-3'd their delicious Chick-fil-A stadium idea."

As expected, fans weren't exactly pleased with the news. The internet had jokes:

Zion Ibarra @ArguingZiion
Chick-Fil-A has the same hours as the Browns.

Kevin Jourdain @KJourdain918
What's the point of building it? Falcons do it again. Could have been a game changer. Chick fil a on a Sunday. 28 nuggets, 3 sandwiches.

While the Falcons lost the Super Bowl in an insane choking fashion, not sure why the first twitter joke has to be about the Browns...oh well, I suppose it's still funny. There's more jokes in the link, but they're all meme's.

kind of a weird, ironic circumstance ... however, the attention and free publicity that this has gotten Chick fil A has basically made it worth it

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Yeah, true.

Back when I was eating bread, I liked going there. Good stuff. I wouldn't say amazing though.

The jokes a few years ago might have been about the Lions, before that, the Bengals, and a couple decades ago the Pats. It is just our turn - we start winning consistently and some other team will get the brunt. Hopefully the Steelers, Rats and everyone in the NCFE smile

The Falcons promised affordable fine foods during games on Sunday, so 'chic-fil-a' fits the bill for other events on Mon-Sat and they can poison the Falcons fans on the rare Mon and Thur night games.

Chic fil A is quite possibly healthier than most "food" at stadiums. But, they close on Sundays, so you hate them. Got it.

i think it's cool that they have the tradition of being closed on sunday.

it's just kinda odd that it would bother to open one in a football stadium....when the busiest times are sundays.

i understand that there are other events as well but...the primary purpose of the stadium is for football...on sundays.

that would be like me opening a steakhouse in India. or a BBQ pork place in a muslim nation.

so closing on Sundays to allow their employees to attend church, if they choose to, or spend time with their families is extremism?

I'm guessing that since it's at a stadium, it will be open that one day a week, 8 times a year, 10 if you count pre season.

Of course, the chicken sandwich will cost you $30 bucks LOL

and if this stadium is part of a bigger complex, that may include team operations it could be open to them during the other 6 days.

Plus if it is used lie the Georgia Dome there will be plenty of college game in it , plus all the other events that an indoor stadium can host

There are steakhouses in India, Muslims eat there all the time.

As for this story..
1. They will make plenty of money at the other events.
2. Chick-fil-a HQ is in Atlanta, I'm sure it wants to be a part of a city landmark like this, even if it doesn't make perfectly logical sense to others.
3. It's more than financially healthy enough to absorb ONE restaurant that doesn't make as much as the rest.
4. I'm glad they aren't wavering on their principles just to make a couple extra bucks on football Sunday.

Atl has a new MLS team that will play there.

And yes, there will be all kinds of college games there.

And the Superbowl is coming here.

I dont think they will have problems finding uses for that stadium....

And there will probably be concerts fairly regularly.

And I bet they have meeting rooms and other places to hold events off the field. Heck, PNC arena (where NC State plays basketball) has meeting rooms, we have association functions there when there aren't games going on and that food is all catered by the local restaurants..

I am guessing the stadium will be used for far more than football games. I am also guessing the company and franchise owner have a business plan that indicates the unit will be profitable. Michael Simon has a restaurant in our stadium that isn't open all the time. I am sure he wouldn't be there if he couldn't make money by doing so.

When you charge three times as much for something at a stadium, you can afford to be open one third of the time. lol

Lot's of truth in that.

I don't know what they charge. My youngest son is going to the Tennessee v Ga Tech game on Monday. I'll ask him to walk by and take a peek at what a standard Chick sandwich costs.

The average Chick does 3.1 mil a year in sales, open 6 days a week. I'll bet this one does near half of that or more , only open 100 days a year. I am sure the owner has other units and can transfer help over for events.

Trust me, this unit didn't open thinking it was going to lose money. They are going to make plenty.

They want to be there.

The one here in Smyrna always has one helluva line. My wife is a chicken lover and so am I. For some reason she really didn't care for their sandwiches. I thought they were pretty good. But you know how it goes when the wife doesn't like it. lol

I read this article a month or so ago ..... very very unique concept ...

This link has a list of some of the prices ... $2 refillable sodas .... $2 hots ... $5 beer ... $3 for a slice ... $2 for a water ...

http://www.businessinsider.com/atlanta-falcons-new-stadium-cheap-food-2017-7

The Atlanta Falcons' new stadium will sell food and beer at unbelievably low prices

In a world of constant inflation and outrageous stadium food prices, the Atlanta Falcons could emerge as one of the most fan-friendly teams in all of sports.

Atlanta's new home turf, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, is set to open its doors on August 26, and once it does, Falcons fans will be able to buy concessions at prices most fans can only dream of. ESPN's Darren Rovell tweeted an image of the intended rates on Tuesday.

Buying expensive stadium concessions can be frustrating for fans. In 2015, for example, the combined price of a hot dog, a soda and a small beer at a San Francisco 49ers game was $22, meaning a group of four could easily spend upwards of $100 on food.

But that won't be a problem at Mercedes-Benz Stadium — not with its bottom-barrel prices. Fans will be able to purchase that same hot dog meal for just $9, much more in line with grocery-store rates, or perhaps fast-food rates.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank said he authorized the low prices in an effort to better accommodate the fans.

"We focused from the beginning on building a unique fan experience at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with a goal of helping those who visit to leave the stadium with great memories shared with family and friends, not aggravation and frustration about their experience," he said in a statement.

The Falcons will play their first-ever game in the new stadium on September 17, hosting the Green Bay Packers. Expect the concession stands to be just as popular as the act

Also, for those of you who think its weird that this restaurant is in the stadium....

It would be weird if the restaurant WASNT in the stadium.

Because Atlanta is the birthplace of chick fil a. Actually a suburb called Hapeville, and the original restaurant is still there. About a mile from my old job.

There are a number of corporate headquarters in Atl for large companies. They have strong ties to the community, not only for their worker bees, but also because they do a lot of charity and community events. Being sponsors of sporting events/stadiums is one of them. I know Delta has a Club in the new stadium and is a sponsor of the Braves. Both Delta and Chick Fil A have a large presence in the Community. So it doesnt surprise me they are all over this.

As I said earlier. The company feels there will be enough non-Sunday stadium usage to make money.

I found the answer. I was looking at good food options at Mercedes Benz stadium. Chick-Filet is encouraging customers to try Fries UP. They will be in the Chick Filet location on Sundays.

Not sure if Fries up is a off shoot of the company, the unit owner also owns a Fries Up as well, of Fries Up is simply leasing the spot on Sundays. Either for a flat fee, a percentage of Sunday sales, or a combination of the two.
