Ok, I'm curious on the opinions of those who have seen Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! I seen it yesterday.
Now I ask that you not give out any spoilers, those who read the book pretty much know what to expect.
My thought is the movie looked rushed just to get the product out there, there was quite a bit cut out of the book, leaving some small and some rather large gaps in the movie, IMO. The movie is 2 hours and 20 minutes, but I think it needed at least another 20 minutes and maybe 30 or 40 to really do this book justice.
I'm not saying the movie is bad but it could have been better.
However, the effects are good, and the girl who plays Luna Lovegood does a very good job with that character. I was actually disappointed with some of the characters lack of onscreen time.
This is my favorite book in the series so far (although the first and HBP are very good too.), but this movie really did not do it justice. IMO
I'm inclined to blame the director for this and I hope David Yates does not direct the Half Blood Prince, which starts shooting in September!
So what are your thoughts?

I went....and admittedly I am not a big Potter fan
I did not think this was a good movie at all.. I think it was average.
It almost seems as I am watching the same movie over and over again.. The major plot line is the same ( Harry mets V, V vs Harry, Harry wins but not really....next movie)
You could probably never watch this and you would be okay. The characters seemed bland, everything seemed very linear...like there was no real cleverness, or thought put into it
I assume the book was better and it always is but I mean come on if the book was 70% like this it was very poorly done..
It seems to me this movie/book was more a filler/stretcher of the series than anything else..
++++++++++++++++++++++SEMI- SPOILER_+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Okay the prophecy how retarded was that?
You mean the good guy has to beat the bad guy..... REALLY?!?!?!?!?!
Give me a break.....the prophecy that was shown in the movie was so over dramatic and extremely predictable it was laughable
Go Browns!!

I'll get back to you after I see it tomorrow night.
All I can say is how do they take the longest book and make it into the shortest movie???
How do you rate the other movies so far?
I LOVE Part 3 (Askaban) the best. It got the best director, in my opinion.
After that I give 2 (Chamber) and 4 (Goblet) a tie. Almost everybody loves Goblet the best, but I felt like it was too rushed, like you did w/ this new one. That's the problem w/ these books getting so much longer, there's too much to squeeze into a movie. Goblet was my favorite book too.
I rate the first one last, just because you look back at it now and see the effects weren't as good as you originally thought, and as much as the kids LOOKED like the characters, they could barely act.

I went to see a different movie last night and the lines for Harry Potter were ridiculous. There were people waiting in line an hour and a half before the showing, just so they could get the seats they wanted in the theatre. I went to a 7:00 showing of Ocean's Thirteen and they sold out the 11:45 show while I was in line. Amazing. I have no interest in the movies/books, but the build-up is spectacular.

You should drive by your nearest Barnes & Noble at midnight on Saturday, July 21st to see the fanatics in line to buy the new, and last, Harry Potter book. My wife participates in this every time and then goes home and goes to bed, too tired to read anything.

I actually liked the 5th book the least of all of the books. With that being said, I thought they did a great job making a mediocre book into an above average movie. I expected this movie to be terrible and it didn't really turn out all that bad. The casting for Luna and Beatrix was amazing. They played those roles extremely well.

The 5th book definitely was too long and bloated. They could have cut a lot out of it. It had a cool beginning, cool ending, and the middle was all Harry whining and being a pain. She went overboard w/ the frustration of adolescence.
I had a feeling they would almost improve on it w/ the movie.

I felt the 5th book had a lot to offer, it showed Neville Longbottome growing up and a look into his past. It showed a further connection between Harry and Voldemort, the Hermione Granger character changed dramatically, she becomes more rebellious, and it finally got to some action with some of the other main characters including Dumbledore.
I know there was an awful lot of extra stuff in the book that would not show up in the movie but damn, they didn't have to just make the movie look and feel like another Hollywood quick release for money. Also, if you notice, they changed a few scenes from the way the book had them described. Yes, I did say that Luna Lovegood was played very well and so was Belatrix LeStrange for such a small part.
However, Tonks is a main character in the book and she's barely even seen in the movie. Same with Lupin, Moody, and McGonagal (sp) all featured a bit more in the book. Also, Kreacher, the Black family house Elf had a bigger part in the book. This clearly should have been the longest movie, instead they took the easy, lazy road and just threw things together and made it a below average movie.
It had some good things in it, the effects were decent, Radcliffe improved upon his portrayal of Potter, as did the other 2 kids and Neville, they found a very good actress for Luna Lovegood and LeStrange, not sure about Tonks as we didn't even get to hear her speak but once? Even Hagrid had a bigger part than several other characters and his was small but it was about right for his character.
As for the other movies, I rather find a lot of charm in the first movie, after all, it's when Harry first discovers he's a wizard. The 2nd and 3rd movies are probably the best in terms of looking like what you would expect and growing darker as well. Goblet was good but did feel, not so much rushed as just leaving out some tiny parts, not nearly to the level of the new movie but could have used some minor tweeking.
All of the books a fantastic! I exect the final book to be the best!

Good post, Rabidfan. I want to get that into it, but I'm at work, looking over my shoulder every time I'm on the internet.
One thing you left out, that I forgot to mention as well, is the Dolores Umbridge character. She's one of the best characters in the whole H.P. series and she was introduced in Book 5.
I'm anxious to see how she comes across on the big screen. I know that the actress they got, Emelda Staunton, is great, but she looks absolutely NOTHING like Umbridge is describerd.
As I said earlier, I won't see it til tomorrow night.

Tyler, you are a perv. As for Umbridge, she is played very well. No real issue with her character portrayal. IMO. I have no real issue with the way any of the actors or actresses portrayed the characters. just an issue with the way the movie overall was created in relation to the book. Could have and should have been longer and more thought put into it. The biggest book should have the longest movie. IMO.

I've never read the books and this is my first Potter movie but I thought it was a pretty good movie. People complain about it not taking in more of the book but 2 1/2 hour movie is pretty long, if it was extended to 3 hours many people's bladders will be exploding. My only complaint was a guy in the same row has us who decided that during the big climax of the movie was the perfect time to get more popcorn.

I agree that there were a couple of important things they missed like the mention of Sirrus' brother is going to play a part in book 7, or so it seems. Also they didn't make it clear where the prophecy came from and how Neville is involved both which seem as if they'll prove important. All of the movie have missed a lot but were enjoyable in their own right. The casting is excellent especially Doris Umbridge in this film. I just wonder if they'll get all the movies made before these kids start looking too old.
Oh I thought the Weasley twins were a lot of fun in this one too.
BTW I went at 9 am yesterday and there was no line at all.
For the post who guessed 11 years old multiply that by 4 and you're still off.

My brother has the book on pre-order but he still wants to go at mid-night for the book so he can enter a custom contest. Good luck to him trying to find someone to take him.

OK, I saw it Friday night. Told you I'd get back to you on it.
There was stuff I liked and stuff not so much.
I loved the dark, more realistic, down-to-earth tone that it had. It felt more like Askaban, which is my favorite of the movies. This new one is now my 2nd favorite.
Loved all the actors as usual. I commend all the good actors they've gotten that come back just to be in it for a few minutes of screen time (Lupin, Mad-Eye, Snape, etc...).
The kids' acting has improved big time.
CGI was top notch as usual. Even better actually.
While I liked the dark tone of the book and the movie, and I realize that Harry was supposed to be all ticked off and moody, the movie was still a little bit too grim, in my opinion. There was almost no humor in it whatsoever. The kids seemed like they were all sedated or something some of the time.
I had some problems with the pacing of it. The ending felt way too rushed to me. I feel like they should have either made everything that happened at the Ministry of Magic last longer or trimmed some of the fat out of the middle.
The Voldemort/Dumbledore fight was awesome, but wasn't nearly long enough.
I also felt like they cut some important stuff and left in some unnecessary stuff. They cut out the wizard hospital where Mr.Weasely went after being attacked, which I thought was a vital part of the book. Then they left in Hagrid's giant half-brother, which could easily have been left out.
Overall, even though I listed more negatives than positives, I liked this movie a lot.
Now bring on Book 7 this weekend!
