I consider myself an average guy when it comes to X's and O's, so I'm throwing this out as mainly a question... We have three tackles who feel they can start at the NFL level... What would be wrong with mixing in one of these guys as a blocking TE as a replacement for a fullback?

This double tight set looks pretty attractive to me...

It's the offseason, so I figured this may fuel a good discussion... So what do you think?

Interesting Idea. Wouldnt want to see it much other than on goal line situations. Also dont like the Fraley or Quinn as starters on offense.

As a gimmick play, or in short yardage, I'm all about this kind of allignment. Using an extra OL as a TE or FB is fairly useful in short yardage situations. Heck, Levi Jones rookie season was mostly spent as an extra "starting" TE.

Sorry, I'm a domer, so Quinn has to be in... Get used to Fraley at center... Bentley wont be able to beat him out.

If Bentley is healthy, he'll play guard. Not because Fraley is a better Center, but because our line would be better with Fraley at Center and Bentley at guard, rather than Bentey at Center and Fraley at Guard.

I don't have an NFL Rulebook in hand...BUT...

1) Shaffer would need to Report as a Tackle Eligible as in Eligible Receiver...And I believe there is a MAX amount of times u can do that during the course of a game...This is to prevent the Offensive advantage of having 6 BLOCKING O-Linemen in the game at once...

2) I do believe that if a an O-Lineman does in fact Report as an Eligible Receiver...He MUST break off the LOS...It is a penalty if he stays in to block...

These are reasons why O-Linemen are designated certain jersey numbers...And so are TE's...It's EASY to see by the refs...

But then again I might just be on CRACK!!!

Hank Fraley will NEVER be a Guard in the NFL...It has been said by HE HIMSELF...Have u ever seen him move???...He's SLOW...

If Benley comes back it will be at RG and Fraley at Center...OR...Bentley to Center and Fraley to DEPTH...

I disagree...

IF (and that's a huge IF) Bentley comes back, he will play Center. Chud's going to have Guards on the field that can move quickly and freely, Bent (IF he plays) would be better suited at the Center role for his initial return to the field due to the nature of his injury. Steinbach and McKinney will play Guard with most likely Fraley at Center.

Now, if Bentley shows good signs at Center and regains his ability to move, he'd be a GREAT Guard.

But, curb the enthusiam - as I dont expect him to see the field much, if at all. If Bent's just in uniform working with the team all season and not rehabbing - that will be an accomplishment.

Living in Packer country this is a formation they used on a regular basis under Mike Sherman.

The used Mark Tauscher and Chad Clifton with Kevin Barry coming in off the bench. I think they called it the U71 package.

It was very affective on short yardage situations.

NO. They're suggesting it because LeCharles has been a pro-bowl center AND a pro-bowl guard. With Fraley holding down the center well, both of our guards would be top-notch if Bent on the right side.

Both sides of our line would be incredible. And, with two guards like we'd have then, Frayley would be even better.

Bentley is the better center for this division for sure. But putting him there would still leave us a bit of a question at RG. But Hank sure holds his own and having Bentley at RG our entire line would be awsome!

If Quinn wins the job I'd be surprised, but ok with it.. But he's gotta earn it. As for Fraley, sorry man, but you are counting on Bentley being back in time to play this season.. I don't think thats reasonable to expect.. that was a pretty bad injury he sustained for anyone, but for a big big man, it's worse.

Fraley is the starter as of RIGHT NOW. And I suspect that if Bentley can play anytime this season, it will be at Guard and at least at first, in a reserve capacity..

But I really hope I'm totally wrong about that.. I really do.

I would think that a team wanting to do this ould easily reassign a T to a TE number and have no issues at all. A Tackle Eligible basically becomes a TE anyway. (even the initials are TE)

I don't recall reading any rule regarding a maximum number of times a player can be designated as an eligible receiver .... although I would think that the referee would get tired of announcing it over and over again ... pay after play .......

Interesting thought, I was thinking just the opposite.. because the center has so little time to come up and get set after snapping the ball before having a NT on him, I was thinking he would be "safer" playing OG because he would be in a stance and have more time to either drive forward or get his feet set... granted his agility and pulling ability might be hampered...

If he's not fully ready to play, neither spot is good for him.

If he IS fully ready to play, either should be fine and the deciding factor should only be "how well can he do what he is able to do?"

Here's a problem that I'm THRILLED we may have this year....

Assuming Thomas gets the nod, and IF Bentley is able to start this season...
Who the hell do you line up at C, RG and RT?!

You've got:

Bentley
Fraley
McKinney
Tucker
Schaffer
Sowells

If everybody's healthy, I'm thinking Fraley/Bentley/Tucker? If Bentley's not healthy I still like Fraley/Tucker/Schaffer on paper over Fraley/McKinney/Tucker (or Schaffer)

If Bentley starts, I think we REALLY have to look at getting rid of Schafer. We HAVE depth now w/ McKinney and Sowells...

Again this is a LOT of assuming... including assuming Tucker can stay on the field this year.

EDIT:
LOL now I'm thinking maybe Bentley/McKinney/Tucker, or Bently/Tucker/Schafer... I just can't decide.

If LCB comes back this year it will be at RG, Hank will be holding down the center position, and doing a good job at it.

Real life: Bentley is more likely than not gonna go on the PUP and if he does play the last 8 games he won't start. Anderson and Frye both suck as we all saw last year and there's no way around that, a good O-Line wont make them better even though they won't get sacked. Quinn will start after the suckiness becomes incredibly apparent after we lose games against really good teams like Cincy and Balitmore.

But I think Shaffer plays RT, Tucker plays RG, and McKinney rotates as the backup C and OG. If Bentely comes back it will be at center.

Heiden is an excellent blocker and is about 6-5/275 or so. He is also a better pass catching TE than most great blocking TEs. He is very valuable to our offense since we'll be using a lot of 2 TE sets in Chud's offense.

Why, for the first time since the rebirth, we have what appears to be extroidanary depth on the line. What possible good does it do us to get rid of Shaffer.

You can't be talking about the CAP.. it's been explained over and over again, we're in pretty good shape,, in fact, very good shape going into next season...

It can't be because he's a total waste,,, cause he isn't. (some would argue that I suppose)

So I have no idea why you would want to hurt the depth of this line by dumping him,,,, besides, we don't know if Sowells can do the job and we don't have a clue at this point if McKinney is gonna be able to perform. Don't forget about his injury.

So basically, getting rid of Shaffer just because Bentley can play is just plain bad thinking.... JMO however

Daman, I agree, we still need as much depth, especially on the OL, that we can get. uh, quality depth.

Now, I believe that many of you are getting to pumped up about Bentley possibly coming back, I really doubt that he starts and I'll be damned surprised if he even sees the field this season. IF he does see the field I'm betting that it's at the Guard position as Fraley has held his own at Center.

One more thing, I really don't see Quinn starting from game 1. He will not have enough knowledge and experience to give us the best chance to win against the Steelers and Bengals. Frye will most likely start but Anderson could possibly beat him out. All depends upon preseason, and Quinn may hold out, which really does him in for starting this season.

As for using an OL eligible for TE, sure why not. Not on every play though, I think in the red zone, near the 10 yard line is a good place to use this. Could use it a few times in other short yardage situations as well, but since the eligible has to break off the L.O.S. and can't stay to block then the QB better get rid of the ball quickly.

Why do we need to establish a fixed in concrete OL.

DL's go on rotation for passing and rushing downs. Hopefully to keep the players fresh into the 4th quarter.

If the Browns have some depth, I could envision a situation whereby they could have some rotation on the OLine as well.

Paul Brown did it with messenger guards.

That said, Fraley, Bentley and Tucker

The one thing that "just may" help the OL eligable angle is Vickers. With him and Lewis both in the backfield,a play action move could release Vickers to pick up the block that the OL won't be there for.

Just a thought.

But your post was a pretty accurate description of my opinion as well.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

You're on crack.....

They can run it as many times as they want, all they have to do is inform the zebra before each play they use it......and he can release from the LOS to catch a pass or he can stay in and block, just like a TE can stay in and block.

I think they have to report as a Tackle Eligible for every play they are in the game, but I don't believe there is a limit on how many times they can do it and he doesn't have to break off the end of the LOS. Hell, I don't even know what you mean by that. Are you saying that he would have to step back......like a flanker does? Or, do you mean, be a yd. or more outside the other tackle? Either way, I think you are wrong.

Concerning the original idea: We could do it, but it would only be done a handful of times per season. We have 3 good TEs. Dinkens is a very good blocker and Heiden is an okay blocker. Plus, they are still viable receiving threats.

One interesting thing..............Joe did play some TE in college. He would be athletic enough to go out as a receiver, but I'm not sure if he would be the one who was the tackle eligible.

Bentley/Fraley: I still find it hard to believe that Bentley will ever see the field this year. That injury was too severe. I do think center might be a little easier on the knee, but all positions on the OL are extremely tough on knees. I also think that guard would be require more mobility. So, I don't know where they would play him, but I wouldn't spend much time thinking about it....because I doubt he plays this year.

Fraley is an average center, nothing more.LCB is an allpro at the position.LCB was brought here because he could handle the dominate NT's in our division without much help from the guards, something Fraley can't do.What effect his injury will have on his abilities remains to be seen.
The RG this year will be Mckinney, and he may turn out to be the best FA signing this past off season, value wise.By mid-year,many of you will have forgotten this LCB/Fraley to guard nonsense and realize just how good a football player Mckinney can be.
