In this politically charged era, we hear a lot of talk about censoring what people can say, read, write, or displayed.

I do not believe in censorship.

What I do believe in is education. I believe in educating the individual so that he/she is able to use their critical thinking skills to determine what is objectionable, relevant, nonsensical, intriguing, worthy of further research, etc.

I also think it helps us understand those that don't share the same ideals as we do.

Free speech is important to the quality of American life and to the nurturing of our minds.

Here is a brief article about it:

Quote:
What Are the Dangers of Censorship?
By Nadine Smith

Censorship can stifle democratic freedoms.

Dictators, countries, schools and parents have banned numerous texts over the decades, many of which have now become famous, including "Lady Chatterley's Lover," "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" and "The Catcher in the Rye." Book banners often cite reasons of inappropriateness, obscenity and danger to the public or to the innocence of young readers. While censors of literature and other media may have good intentions, they often fail to recognize that censorship itself can be a dangerous practice.

Threat to the Democratic Nature of Education
The National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) argues that censorship threatens the democratic nature of the educational system in the United States. The Supreme Court agreed in 1967 when it ruled in favor of a New York teacher with suspected communist affiliation keeping his job by arguing "the classroom is peculiarly the marketplace of ideas." The goal of the educational system, according to the NCAC, is to produce thinking citizens, whose rights to the freedom to read under the First Amendment are endangered by the censorship of reading material, whether in print or on the Internet.

Missed Opportunity for Critical Thinking
Reading challenging materials teaches students critical thinking skills they need to flourish as American citizens. Without reading a wide variety of materials representing a range of beliefs and ideas, students will lose out on the opportunity to judge ideas that may oppose what they believe or have been taught to believe. Students will find these kinds of evaluative skills useful as adults in a democratic society where they will have to deal with controversial ideas in the media, at work, in the government and internationally.

Missed Opportunity to Learn From the Past
Some people believe in censoring classic books that use words that are now considered racial slurs, such as "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." Certainly some of the ideas about race in such books are outdated and even derogatory, from a contemporary perspective. However, a teacher can use instances such as these as history lessons, explaining to students how ideas about race have changed over the years.

Suppression of Ideas that Challenge the Status Quo
Many people know that the Nazis burned books that challenged their political philosophy. Book-burning or banning is common in many totalitarian governments, including Soviet Russia, North Korea and communist China. North Korea, the most censored country in the world according to the Committee to Protect Journalists, allows no independent media. In North Korea and other heavily censored countries, citizens have no access to information from outside their country and are forbidden to criticize the government. Many people in these censored countries live isolated, sheltered lives, ignorant of alternative ways of life and thinking.

My sites are heavily censored. There is a whole list of topics my game members may not discuss.

Some of it because it does nothing but cause endless fights (religion)
Some of it is because its illegal for minors to be exposed to certain topics.
Some of it because its inappropriate,

Pretty much all games in my genre do this.
And nobody has a problem with it...until they get banned. lol

from your link, which was good btw:

"Many people in these censored countries live isolated, sheltered lives, ignorant of alternative ways of life and thinking."

the issue between those countries and here in the US is that we don't really have any legal censorship problems, at least not anything that matters in the long run. the kind of censorship we deal with is child's play compared to countries like North Korea.

our censorship is socially based, and completely voluntary for the most part.

for example, look how many people we have wanting the nfl and/or the government to create a policy/law banning the kneeling or protesting of the flag and anthem, yet then turn around and don't want any censorship on any confederacy era monuments or flags, even though it represents treason.

people censor themselves all the time. we censor our kids from music or movies, we censor ourselves from news outlets we refuse to watch based on political leanings, we censor ourselves from certain type of groups, demographics, etc.

also, in free countries such as western europe, canada, or the US, there's a very fine line between censorship and living in a bubble, and there's a lot of grey area involved in that.

for example, if you grew up wealthy, in a wealthy neighborhood, surrounded by wealthy kids, in a wealthy district, then your ideology is gonna closely resemble that of the community, especially the way your parents think and talk about social/political issues around you. people can argue that in this case, living in a bubble is a form of censorship, as the community has completely isolated themselves based on economic class and upbringing.

No offense, but I think both you and Eve are speaking in a narrow point of view.

I'm talking about what can be read, viewed, etc.

I used to use the book Jump Ship to Freedom in an ELA class I was teaching. It was a victim of censorship because of the use of N... word repeatedly.

The problem is that the book championed the cause of blacks and showed how much adversity they faced. It was a historical fiction book that addressed how unfair things were even in the north.

I have a separate degree in English even though I was primarily a math and science teacher. I can provide many examples of how censorship limits one's understanding of this complex world we live in.

Educate people. Help them become critical readers and viewers. Don't dictate what we can read or watch.

There are many forms of censorship in the world and not all are bad.

Its not always about education. (Its not my job to educate kids, thats what they have parents and teachers for)

Eve and i don't have a narrow view.

you're talking about what you hope will happen, and we explained to you what is currently happening.

when you said this:

"I'm talking about what can be read, viewed, etc."

i literally looked at my post and:

"people censor themselves all the time. we censor our kids from music or movies, we censor ourselves from news outlets we refuse to watch based on political leanings, we censor ourselves from certain type of groups, demographics, etc."

swear i touched on what you're saying. unless you're already censoring yourself from actually reading what i post.

also, here's a list of books banned in the US

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_censorship_in_the_United_States

which to clarify, means books that have been banned somewhere within the US. the US itself has not banned any books, as all those books on the list can be easily bought on amazon or anywhere else.

parents and how they raise their kids is the most common and restrictive form of censorship. as such, your beef should be more with the parents and less with the schools or libraries, as any book can be had through the internet and a credit card.

remember that the next time you claim someone has a narrow view for absolutely no reason.

Censorship happens quite often in the US. However, we never realize it as we have an illusion of freedom.

Although I agree with her base message that blacks are often portrayed as victims by media, it's obvious this is a political statement from a Trump and GOP supporter. But she does go on to include other groups, and bash the very platforms that she is using to get her message out as the censoring evils! lol. She's so censored!

You have posted a couple of her videos now and even though I respect her and some of what she says, she's far from being a poet warrior or great intellect... She's just an average middle income black republican taking a stand against what she views as a slight by American media projecting blacks as 'less than' or 'unequal' in some way with an obvious political slant to her message.

She's like Black and Mild Tomi Lahren, and I as well as most libs can't stand that idiot.

You dont even have the intelligence to understand what censorship is. Censorship is an action taken by an agency of authority, such as the government. Censorship would be the banning of books or writings by our government , which doesnt happen. Anything else is done by choice, and therefore is not censorship. A school or library or whatever deciding not to carry a book for whatever reason is not censorship. You following the rules of your employer is not censorship.
