Vontaze Burfict reportedly facing 5-game suspension for illegal hit
Vontaze Burfict suspension: Here's the hit and why it's illegal under new NFL rule

Here's the hit:
Keep your eyes in the lower right on the 2nd replay

I suppose this could have gone in the Gameday forum, but this was actually from week 2 of the preseason. And since it could impact the Browns, we play the Bengals in week 4, this is something to watch.

With him getting a 3-game ban for the hitting Brown in the playoffs last year, I can clearly see why he's getting 5 games now. Although, I don't remember what happened after the appeal last year, did he serve all 3?

Female announcer well lets just say she don't have a clue as she is stating that Boughty's hit on OBJ was worse then this Burfict hit.... saywhat One is legal ours vs OBJ and one is illegal Burfict hits him in the upper neck and head area let alone it being a defenseless position of the receiver and he decleats him...hope it sticks!

Burfict and Jones are the biggest thugs in the NFL and i wished they would get kicked out.

There was absolutely no reason for Burfict to nail the TE especially going to the head area. Thats the kicker for me. What the hell was he thinking other than I can cheap shot this guy thats not looking.

Suspend him. If you want to make the game cleaner and safer, eliminating this stuff which doesnt belong in the game anyway is a good way to start.

It looks like a shoulder to chest hit
And the NFL rules state you can hit a wr within 5 yards as long as you don't hit the head
I don't think the refs even threw 15 yd penalty on that hit
Looks like a very aggressive clean hit to me

herre's maybe where his reputation gets the better of him

I think it looks worse than it was. He bit on Alex Smith's pump fake, and it looked like he may have tried to pull up at the last second but the FB kept running into him because he was looking the other direction for the ball.

I think it might come down to which rule supersedes the other:

- A defender can chuck a WR within 5 yards of the LOS
- A defender can't blindside a WR while he's running a route

If the NFL is serious about safety, it'll have to support the latter.

I know some think this is "old school football" and this is further proof the game is turning into a flag football league, but I don't believe this is really what football is about, CTE concerns or not. Destroying a guy from the blindside isn't football in my opinion. There should be a basic code on the field at all levels. You might be able to light a guy up, but do you have to?

Burfict's history of thuggery and dirty play should preclude him from receiving any benefit of doubt.

Doesn't seem to come into effect for James Harrison.

If the action was actually illegal, sure throw the book at him. I could see it go either way, and won't be that upset about it for the reason you mentioned.

Overreact to this chicken crap-pish cheap shot stuff. Discipline is solely about changing behavior. A broken neck or paralysis seemed real possibilities. It invites get even paybacks certainly. Let him sit.

I really don't think that an appeal should be automatically allowed as the normal course of events; I also think it is wrong to appeal so the reduction is automatic. That leads to highballing the punishment so it "settles" on the appeal to the original amount.

This thug behavior is not football. I favor violence on the field, play with monstrous intensity, but there are limits and needs be player self-control. Hope he serves any games he has had assessed. Seat yourself. Maybe we need more season-ending punishment or something creative.

Harrison is dirty because he kills people with hits.

Burfict is dirty because he twists ankles in piles, fights people, and hits people illegally.

Didn't look like a dirty hit to me.

And I don't want to hear about player safety from the NFL when they schedule 4 Exhibition games each year so they can charge full price for tickets.

I can't speak for any other NFL team, but as a Bears STH, I don't pay full price for the preseason games. They're $40. Regular season seats are $90-110. It's been that way for 3+ years.

jc...

Burfict is watching the QB thinking the pass is going to the receiver entering his zone. The NFL is asking Burfict to make a split second decision to lay off the man he is responsible for in pass coverage...easier said than done.

Tough call in this case..Burfict is playing with a bullseye on his back as the NFL is just looking for "anything" to claim Burfict made a hit worthy of suspension.

I never knew that. I always paid full price for my Brown's season tix.

I just assumed it was an NFL policy. Interesting.

Yeah, just letting you know. wink

I think my friend in LA said the Rams did the same thing for him last year.

It also makes it easier to divvy up the preseason games. I just gave my Bears/Browns set to a friend for nothing. It's game 4 and nobody plays. Plus, I don't live downtown anymore.

....oh, back on topic. Can we at least all agree he should stay suspended through week 4 to help our chances? tongue

Though he's notorious for some idiot moves...I can't really blame him too much on him (regarding hit on Sherman) didn't seem all that bad too me...

But if they uphold his suspension, than that helps us as he's clearly their best LB

JMHO, legal hit, BUT what about the defenseless player aspect, if a guy is out on pass play, why flatten him just because you can. Just cover him. As you stated, with NFL ticket prices, do you want to pay to see Aaron Rogers play or his sub, Joe Smoo- due to his history I hope he loses his appeal....GO Browns!!!!

From the angle behind him towards Alex Smith, the hit doesn't look bad. From the angle behind Burfict towards Sherman, it looks pretty dirty.

j/c...all this he was defending the pass and was doing his job is bs...if there was a pass coming to the WR then it would have been pass interference. He had good vision on the QB and the WR coming into his Zone. He just was trying to lay claim on his zone like a dawg peeing to mark his territory.

I didn't make the rules...my kind of football intimidation is a big part of football. A hit like that would give WRs alligator arms coming into the middle. Yesteryear that was how the game was played - you catch a ball in the middle you are going to pay for it.

But they changed the rules...whether for safety or for making games high scoring for the fans especially the casual fans...hard core fans love a battle regardless of the score.

So was it a criminal act. No but it was most definitely against the rules. The hit was high enough but also the defenseless rule also applied. Yes, he has a history. A kid trying to make a team does the same hit...he might get a small fine but no suspension. Burfict has a history of playing dirty and breaking the rules. Its like the drug guys...slap on the hands, 2 game suspension, 4 game suspension, 6 game suspension,
Indefinite Suspension.

Wasn't that also true I think last year when Tom Brady served his suspension?

just off the top of my dome.

Tom brady came off his suspension and played us first game back.

Burfict will be doing the same.

big ben was suppose to be on the bench still recovering from injury til landry jones got hurt, then proceeded to through almost 300 yards on us....in the first half.

i'm sure there are a few others.

Just wait until Andrew Luck is magically healthy week three and we have to face him instead of Scott Tolzien or Stephen Morris.
