His play is suffering. Can he be moved to safety or nickel? He has lost value at corner, but is still worth more to us than leaving us, I suspect. Now if he has pissed off the Powers That Be, then he may get dealt regardless of loss. But also consider the source.

Unless we can get something good for Joe I would keep him at least one more year until we get another starting CB and more depth. We can't just cut him this year because of the heavy cap hit. This will probably be his last year as a Brown either way.

It's gonna suck to see Haden go, but I get it.

Why do the Browns suddenly need a WR?
This front office spent 4 draft picks on WRs in the 2016 draft..analytics, you know? With those 4 wr and the addition of Kenny Britt, there is no reason the Browns should be lookin g for a wr help.
This front office even turned down a chance to sign their top WR from last season, feeling that they had filled the team's needs via the draft and signing free agent Britt.
If the Browns now need WR help...it means someone in the Browns front office and/or analytics department screwed up.
This front office is responsible for the quality of the teams WR group...their decision created the present need (they say). Stick you your thread. You have bumped it for 5 months now. Your jibber jabber on the FO isn't welcomed in other threads. Any talk about the FO from you needs to stay in your thread.

Just a general comment on Joe. I love the kid. As a Gator he was a great cover corner, and a better tackler, and had a great attitude and personality.
He brought that to the Browns. That said, he has gone down. Nothing to do with his attitude or desire. Mostly injury and age isn't improving.
I remember Hanford Dixon. Seemed like it was over the course of a game or two he went from the Hanford we knew to a guy wearing lead shoes trying to cover guys.
I think the trade talk is generated because he might not start for Greg Williams. He is going to get replaced as a starter.
I hate it because Joe is everything Cleveland, but times move on. If this is the time, so be it.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong

Funny how loyalty is a one-way street on this board.
As an aside: I am again starting to question the FO and coaching staff a bit w/their recent moves and reported moves.

Though, if I understand his contract correctly, it'll cost us more to keep him ($14.4m) than dead money ($10.8m). http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/joe-haden-6516/

I'm just trying to read the tea leaves, but when I hear about stuff like this, I envision the FO is merely trying to see what they can get for him. If they think they can get a really nice pick from trading Joe, then they'd jump on it. That's very different from just taking whatever you can get for him... which I think is how this story is being interpreted.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

Me, too. Btw has he really played as bad in this pre-season as some are suggesting?
If he is traded, where does that leave our CB depth chart?

I agree with Peen and others on this.
Love Haden but the injuries unfortunately made him lose a step. It sucks to because he should be in his prime.
I would love to see him at safety but when the business aspect kicks in, that contract simply isn't matching the production we are seeing.

He's not thick enough to be a safety. I wish people would put that idea to rest.

Haden is a very physical player and willing tackler. He can lay the wood.
His problem is that he isn't very fast and receivers run right by him, especially on crossing routes.

I agree he is physical, not timid. He delivered a heavy hit against TB, but I question whether Joe can do that play after play from the safety position. He seems to be too light in the rear end for such a physically demanding position.

Has he really been toasted in pre-season games? Honestly I'm asking, I haven't noticed.
He might have lost a step but he can still get by on smarts imo. And he's a character guy, a leader.

I'm not a huge fan of Haden. Always thought he was overrated. I don't know what kind of leader he is. Our defenses have sucked for years.
But still.......I wouldn't get rid of him this year because teams run so many plays w/a ton of receivers and you need all the corners you can get.

What if other CBs are simply better than JH? Do we keep him over a better player due to his contract? I hope not. We are light years away from a salary cap problem.

Joe will tune it up in the regular season. I hope you are correct. I'm concerned that GW's scheme will not be friendly for JH as he will not likely be able to get on the LOS and jam his WR. I think we will see much more zone-type sets...and that won't work to JH's skill set. If he can't jam the WR, he's got his hands full. Been that way for awhile now.

I do agree that Haden likes the tight bump and run coverage. I don't think that GW has shown us what all he will do on defense. He is going to play the scheme that best suits his talent, even if that means Joe might have to become a rotational CB or He might play more man coverage. Another thing to keep in mind, is the fact that Joe Haden has never looked good in preseason.

Unless the Browns are picking up some young DB with good cover skills, what is out there to trade for? We do not have enough DBs on our roster to just lose one. Or is there some DB somewhere that we will pick up. This is not a good move unless you are getting a starting DB.

Or is there some DB somewhere that we will pick up. This is not a good move unless you are getting a starting DB. I think that they really like Taylor and McCourty, and they want to see a lot more of Boddy-Calhoun. I think that we will play a lot of 3 Safety dime. Given that, it could be difficult for Haden. I think they have a lot of young DBs they want to get a look at .... and like every other position on this team, they don't want a lot of old(er) players they didn't bring in standing in their ways. The older guys on this team are not part of the future. There are certain veterans that the front office wants to keep ..... McCourty, Thomas, Greco, Colquit ...... and maybe Britt. (if he doesn't play himself off the team) However, the only other 28+ player on the team is Haden. This is a young team, looking to stay young, with just a few exceptions. I wonder if they keep Haden if they can't find someone to trade for him. I also wonder if they asked Williams his opinion on Haden.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Browns should pump brakes on reported Joe Haden trade talks The Cleveland Browns would be smart to hold on to Joe Haden, at least for the short term, as defensive coordinator Gregg Williams shapes his defense. by Mike Hoag@BrownsBeat Aug 29, 2017, 8:42pm EDT Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports Joe Haden has been a model franchise player for the Cleveland Browns. Not just on the field, either. He has struggled there due to injuries and other deficiencies, but in the community and revenue department he’s been an important face.
Players don’t get paid to be the face of a franchise, though, or to be active in the community, but you can’t discredit the type of person you’re dealing with when discussing the business reasons to keep or move on from a player.
That’s why, if true, the rumor reported by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora that Cleveland’s “aggressively trying to trade him” because of his large contract, is a curious move.
Haden’s expensive, as La Canfora said as the reasoning for their motivation to move him. But he’s not that expensive, and the team can certainly afford to keep him around, at least for the short term. They have no immediate needs that are threatened by his cap hold, given that they’re still under the salary cap by a whopping $50 million.
Here’s a look at the type of cap space the Browns would free up by trading Haden now, courtesy of Spotrac.
Follow Spotrac ✔ @spotrac Trading Joe Haden would leave the #Browns dead cap hits of $3.3M in 2017 & $3.2M in 2018. New team acquires cap hits of $11.1M/$11.2M/$10.5M
As the Browns have no immediate need to move Haden now, it’s also not the best idea to do it now for two reasons. First, the Browns aren’t in position to deal defensive backs when they’re lacking adequate depth to fill in the gaps if Haden’s no longer in the equation. And it’s also hard to imagine Haden’s trade value becoming any lower than it has after his play has fallen off during the past few seasons.
From the look of his play on the field this preseason, and opinions of his coaches, Haden’s on the verge of having a bounce-back season in a new and more cornerback friendly Gregg Williams-led defense.
“I think he has had a great training camp, and I think he played well in our games,” coach Hue Jackson said after Tuesday’s practice. “He is a huge piece of what we do on defense, and we will just keep moving forward from there.”
If Haden’s a huge piece of the puzzle, and he’s worth his salt, then there’s no doubt he’ll play well this season in Williams’ aggressive scheme that affords him somewhat less liability in the secondary. If he plays well enough, he’ll help himself attract contenders at the trade deadline and also help the Browns land a much more lucrative return in any potential trade deal, assuming that’s still their plan at that hypothetical future date.
“Do I want Joe on our football team? Yes,” Jackson answered his own question. “Like I said, whatever our organization thinks is best, that is what we will do.”
What’s best for the cap conscious Browns organization is to wait this out and not tip their hands. It’s good the news of Haden being made available has surfaced to plant the idea around the league, but it’s not the best idea to act on any offers at this point.
Haden’s going to draw interest, but his high price tag and questionable performances in recent years will make teams hesitant to give a fair value return to acquire him.
You can make the case to trade Haden, easily. But it’s hard to make the case stick that says trading him right now is anywhere close to the best time to do so.

I think that he stretches the truth in stating that Haden's play has been in decline for a FEW YEARS.
Never mind that he was injured and chose to play through that injury LAST YEAR, for his team was short on depth.
Again Joe has never looked good in preseason, as if that is ever a true barometer.

Ytown, I'm not disagreeing with your premise of his age being a factor and wanting to look at the newer DBs. But if you look at our division, and how good the other WRs are, if you trade Haden, you need to get at MINIMUM a #2 starting DB. And just like YoungTurk said, one injury to a those young DBs are we are in trouble.
I do not know how hard the Browns are trying but a future draft pick is not a good trade. Nor some prospect DB.

Even though he isn't the CB he once was...I would keep Haden this year as he definitely helps our CB core look better , especially if we get the infamous injury bug we always seem to get...If he can't restructure next year or flat out blows, then we can let him go next year
