About damn time!

Quote:
Indians owner: Timeline for eliminating Chief Wahoo has accelerated

Craig Calcaterra,NBC Sports 1 hour 38 minutes ago

Earlier this year Major League Baseball changed its stance on the Indians logo, Chief Wahoo, shifting from a position in which it merely acknowledged that some people find Wahoo offensive to having a clear desire for the Indians to chuck it. In the wake of Rob Manfred and the league voicing its opinion on Wahoo, team owner Paul Dolan acknowledged that Wahoo would likely be gone “within a couple of years.” It was not a decision Dolan said he was pleased about, just one that he felt that was inevitable due to league pressure.

Dolan continues to not be pleased about it, and continues to note that it’s the league, and not the club, moving this. Indeed, he says that the team and the league are in disagreement about it. At the same time, however, he appears to have revealed that the timetable for getting rid of Chief Wahoo has accelerated. From Ohio.com:

Dolan, speaking to 1590 WAKR’s Ray Horner as part of their speaker series at St. George Fellowship Centre in Fairlawn, indicated that the Indians and the commissioner’s office continue to work down the path of finding a “middle ground” regarding the usage of Chief Wahoo.

According to Dolan, they have not yet found it, but it won’t be long.

“We’re not exactly aligned on its future,” Dolan said. “But we will come to some understanding some time relatively soon, meaning before the start of the 2018 season and maybe sooner than that.”

Deadspin and other outlets passed along these comments yesterday, mostly with the angle that the team is resisting MLB’s plans for Wahoo and searching for a “middle ground.” That may be true, but it seems more to me like this is an epic game of good cop, bad cop, with the league willing to be the heavy while the club takes whatever opportunities it can to appear to be fighting it in order to keep from alienating fans. Which may, in fact, be the team’s actual sentiment on the logo. But the key takeaway here, I feel, is that the timetable for moving Wahoo just leaped forward a year, from “a couple of years” just this past spring to “the start of the 2018 season and maybe sooner than that.”

I can’t help but think that this is being orchestrated on some level. If so, it’s pretty deft orchestration, with the club being allowed to remain the good guys and, perhaps, depending on what “middle ground” means, being allowed to continue to sell merch with Wahoo on it to Wahoo-loving fans, with the added sheen of rebellion or underground cred to it.

Which is not the worst thing in the world. Sure, ideally, the team would cease any and all associations with Wahoo. Realistically speaking, however, people were going to continue to wear their old Wahoo stuff once it was eliminated as an official logo and bootleg manufacturers were bound to step in to fill the demand. It was never going to be possible to scrub Wahoo’s existence from the face of the Earth. The key goal is for a racist caricature to no longer be an official mark of a Major League Baseball team. Particularly for it to no longer appear on the team’s uniforms and marketing and promotional materials.

Reading between the lines in Dolan’s comments, that’s happening faster than first expected.

sucks only because i gotta buy some new merch.

oh well, hopefully the new snapbacks with the 'C' starts looking better designed.

this decision wouldn't had bothered me one way or another, because at the end of the day, the logo will never changed what this team means to the city, and anybody who says otherwise is only fooling themselves. but, i'm glad the owner decided to act on his morals, so that's a good sign, IMO.

Go tribe!!

Well, it occurs to me sports in American culture is changing.

I'm sure there's a multitude of nonsports fans who are decrying Chief Wahoo and praising the Browns kneeling.

People who couldn't care less about the sports.

Maybe it's related to the effiminization of the American male.

It does seem society is headed that direction in general.

I love Hockey. Washington Caps fan.
We don't have any of the problems associated with the NFL, NBA or now, MLB.

Well hockey isn't the most diverse sport. It also isn't the most popular. Many believe the thing that is holding the sport back in the United States is its lack of inclusivity, and that a combination of economics and access to the sport are the main factors explaining why the sport continues to be overwhelmingly white.

Hockey is slowly expanding. It had geographic constraints not long ago (places with climates that were hot didn't have a ton of ice rinks to support a hockey community). That has changed, but it wasn't that long ago.

It is still super expensive, though. That's an issue that hasn't been addressed yet.

I could really care less. Business people making business decisions.

To me it's no different than when the Browns changed uniforms. It's a PR stunt to sell more merchandise. You stop the bad PR from a small minority of people by bowing to the PC bunch and line your pockets at the same time.

Just business as usual.

I'd prefer they dump it tomorrow. I root for the baseball team in Cleveland, not a logo. Heck, I'd think most Browns fans would agree a logo isn't needed.

I couldn't care less about what the logo is. All I care about is the play on the field.

Anyone who is upset about this needs to have a hard look in the mirror about priorities.

Of course it couldn't have anything to do with the fact that most of the good players come from countries likeRussia and Canada. grin

Speaking of hockey, I wish Dan Gilbert would explore sending some Cavs home games to Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Columbus in exchange for some Sabres, Penguins, and Blue Jackets games here in Cleveland. Maybe 3-4 games from each. They'd be close enough that Cavs fans could still attend while expanding the Cavs marketing area, and we could all see some NHL hockey here.

Never been a fan of the Chief. Nothing political about it when I was little, just thought he looked stupid. Keeping my political thoughts to myself because I have no desire to embark on that conversation.

I agree with you that the "Block C" is terrible. Really wish that the Browns or Indians had a cool logo.
I think the Cavs have a cool logo but I am not a big NBA fan. I would love to see the Indians go with the old C that they used to use and mimic the Cavs by putting an arrow through it.

Just another reason to hate baseball. Bunch of PC pansies. Bad enough watching baseball is about as exciting as watching paint dry but stripping away the traditions and culture associated with the team make me want to watch it even less.

Whatever baseball is a dying sport anyways.

There's people in this country who doesn't consider the klan to be racist. FYI might need a new argument.

Nope I don't need a new one. I don't consider the Chief racist. I do however consider the clan racist. SO I would disagree with any clan members who said they were not racist, just like those who think the Chief is racist will disagree with me.

I agree. Being so attached to a stupid logo is almost hard to believe. People whining, crying, stomping their feet about losing their precious little logo is almost hard to comprehend.

I agree, time to move on from the Orange helmet. Browns is offensive, too. Not inclusive enough and prejudiced against the other colors.

Somewhat serious. At least so far as I wouldn't be particularly upset if they did change things. We have some of the worst looking memorabilia in the league.

As far as baseball, playing it was good. Watching it really isn't for me any more.

+1

The issue with me, the hats, shirts and jackets someone still owns with the Chief, they still exist. Wear them. All this means is that there won't be any new stuff. And there will probably be NOS merchandise on sale somewhere on the net with him for a while, plus eBay.

The Tribe already wears uni's without the logo at times, so it's not too different than today.

The team is still here, the owner is paying, the fans are showing up, they're in first place and contending for another WS visit. As for the memories, the logo isn't being washed from history, it's be washed for the future. People can still get a tattoo of it tomorrow.

Heck, I wouldn't care if they changed the team name to the Spiders. Win a WS to erase the memories from last year.

I agree. Who cares either way? I see a lot of crying and whining coming from the other direction as well. Got a mirror close by?

I think that those who love the logo still have options. Buy a ton of Chief Wahoo shirts, hats, and other memorabilia.

You can put some of it away and they will become collector's items that will one day be worth a lot of money.

You can wear some of the items during daylight hours and then slip on your white sheet and hood at night. It's a win--win for you guys. thumbsup

Hockey is doing quite well

Its a great game, just not for everyone. This crap about economics is stupid though, because just because it is a bunch of white people playing it does not mean that those people are financially well to do. In Canada and Russia many of the players are coming from poverty.

Learn to skate and you have a chance.

The other sports don't really require other skills before you can start playing. Get a ball and start throwing it or bouncing it around.

Until you can skate, you can't start learning how to play the game.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I don't consider it racist either. Didn't they take a poll of real Indians ( not like Elizabeth Warren ) and find they didn't care about it? MLB is caving to the PC crowd.

Close.

MLB is caving to the half-wit Gen Y and Millennium wimp crowd.

I wonder what the "Greatest Generation" thought of the "Baby Boomers" in the 60s and early 70s.
