Report: Freeny gets huge contract July 13, 2007 BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT (TICKER) -- The Indianapolis Colts have apparently made Dwight Freeney the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. ESPN.com is reporting that Freeney has agreed a six-year, $72 million deal with the team that had made him its franchise player. The deal is said to include a $30 million signing bonus. "To have me paid among the top players in the league -- not just as a defensive players -- means a lot of me," Freeney told ESPN. "(Colts general manager) Bill Polian is the one who drafted me. I was hand-picked by him. He was going to do the right thing for the organization." Freeney, a first-round selection from the 2002 draft, has registered 56 1/2 sacks in five seasons with the Colts, forcing 27 fumbles.

wow, I just saw this on PFT. I think they overpaid for him for sure, especially considering that there are so many quality players on that team that are going to be commanding big contracts in the future. He also had an off-year last year by his standards. Just wait until Peppers gets a new deal, this will just be the starting point.

Ridiculous....I would take the Patriots company line on this one.
No one player is worth that.

I looked it up and Clements got $22 million in guaranteed money. I guess that's why Freeny is considered the highest paid.

You have to look at the ratio of what they get paid per year.
I think Clements was signed for 8 years which gives him $10 million a year. Freeney gets $12 mill/year.
There was also quite a difference in the signing bonus IIRC.

Only two possible answers to that...
1. The writer is an idiot and doesn't do research
or
2. He's only looking at guaranteed money
It might be that the $30 mill signing bonus to Freeney is more than the guaranteed money that Clements signed for..
either way, something is missing here

Thats the way I saw it as well. In my opinion that was a bad contract by the colts. Freeney is a great pass rusher, but is average at best verse the run. He was hurt a lot last year as well. If Freeney gets this much I cant wait to see how much Peppers gets.

ou also have to look a the clauses in this contract, IF clements is on the team next year he gets a pretty hefty signing bonus and the last year worth 16 million is voided. So for all purposes his deal was only worth 64 million.
He may have signed for 80 million to look cool, but there is no physical way that he could collect the last year and the 16 million dollars it represents.
Quote:
There is also what the football industry is calling a "phony" final year of nearly $16 million in Clements' contract. Those dollars and that year would automatically evaporate should he collect a $10 million roster bonus, as expected, following the 2008 season. Not collecting that roster bonus would mean termination of the contract, so, at best, Clements' deal is for seven years and $64 million.

Most of you guys are forgeting that he didn't get this fat pay check cuz he is the best player in the league...it's cuz the salary cap is growing so freaking fast that almost everyone is going to get paid unheard of #s if they are even decent in the league n can play....not this much..this is still a lot but dont' be surprised if more follow freenys steps...

Freeney is the best pass rusher in the league...rather than Clements who's maybe a top 10 corner.

He's the best? I disagree very much. Peppers is number 1 in my book. Like him or not, Merriman is a sack artist. You can also make a strong case for Akron's own Jason Taylor. So that makes Freeney the 3rd of 4th best IMO. Peppers' contract is going to be bigger when his time comes because Peppers is the better player.

I think he's a better pass rusher than Peppers. I think Pepper is a better DE, but I think Freeney is a better pass rusher...nobody beats the spin.
Merriman is a case you could make IMHO.
Taylor...I just don't see that one.

with the new cap and the way it increases each year, these contracts will become more frequent.

Go look at tape of Freeney against the Seahawks and Ravens in '05. He was manhandled by Walter Jones(but then again who isn't)..my point being the spin move isn't the end all. Jason Taylor has 106 sacks for his career so I don't see what you're not seeing.

I guess it just depends on what's your flavor.
Freeney to me is the best pure pass rusher in the league, from the pure pass rush position (the weakside rusher). Off the snap, he's so fast upfield it's scary. He uses his hands well, and he times the spin move perfectly. Now, teams are starting to anticipate that move, so continue on at the pace, he needs to develop more creativity.
Peppers is the best strongside rusher in the league. He's so light on his feet (probably even more so than Freeney). Peppers relies more on power, but he can play the game of the small man's DE. I love Peppers, and is more complete (his run defense gets no credit) than Freeney, but Freeney just is a slightly better pass rusher.
Merriman (my favorite player to watch) is the best stand up rusher in the league. Like Peppers, he gets pegged as one dimensional, but he plays a great, well rounded game. Like Freeney, his hand use is amazing.
Jason Taylor has really come into his own as a versatile edge rush specialist. He can rush from both sides, standing or in a three point. Taylor is quick, but he has the best vision and recognition skills of this group. Taylor's wing span helps him out tremendously.

Freeney is probably a better pass rusher than all of those guys. I'd rather have other DE's though. He's sort of a liability against the run and is undersized. Give me Peppers or Jason Taylor whom do both well anyday of the week over Freeney. As for Merrimen, he's a different player. I doubt as a DE he'd get as many sacks. Steroids or not, he's a very good player. But I'd still rather have our boy Wimbley cause he's the man. (Call me stupid or not, but I wouldn't trade them straight up. I just like Kamerion because he's all ready a Cleveland Brown and one of our true positive pieces.) So yeah, this salary cap thing must stop. Don't ruin football as baseball has been ruined. Top notch guys getting rediculous contracts sucks. I never understand in these sports how the lower end guys get screwed and the better players get spoiled. Isn't there something we can do to make the Daven Hollys earn a little more and Dwight Freeneys a little less. What happens when smaller market teams won't pay for these guys? And when Dallas or Washington buy themselves teams. That would ruin football.

The spin move to the inside I'm sure was a lot more difficult when it's Hutchinson you're running into. As far as the Ravens go, I dunno, man...I've definitely seen Dwight Freeney abuse the hell out of Jonathan Ogden before.
As far as Taylor goes, I didn't mean to convey that I think Taylor is bad, but I just don't think he's as good of a pure pass rusher as Freeney. I mean, the man is still amazing, though. One thing I'd like to know is how many people, especially last year, passed against the Dolphins as opposed to the Colts.
As far as Merriman goes, I don't know how to compare him to Freeney. A SOLB in a 3-4 vs. a Weakside DE in a Tampa 2...definitely two distinct positions. I still think that Lights Out will be right behind Peppers, though, for best defensive player.
All that being said, I still don't think Freeney is worth that much friggin' money.

Wow...you add that to Mannings 2004 contract of $99.2m for seven years with a $34.5m signing bonus, an average of $14.17m annually. Manning is also eligible to earn an extra $19m in incentives
Thats a lot of cash wrapped up in just TWO players.

there's going to be some other players that want that kind of $$$
free agent season next year will be a crazy.
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

The Clements and Freeny deals make me sick.
that's really all I have to saw about this scary trend. it's going to ruin our sport eventually. I'm not sure exactly how it will unfold but the ripples effect will eventually have reprecusions negative for us fans.

This is a excellent point, but a totally different thread topic. That Said I agree COMPLETELY with that statement. I'm more for Clements & Freeny getting these production paydays than these rookie contracts & signing bonus' for unproven professional level production.

Judging the best rushers in the league is difficult, especially when they play different positions. It's up for debate depending on how you judge who the best pass rusher is. My main point is, and others have agreed, that Freeney is lacking in run stopping and is strictly one dimensional. As fun as he is to watch, he got overpaid IMO. If he's getting this much, I can't wait to see what a more complete player(Peppers) is going to get..I wouldn't be surprised to see him get $80 million+.

I bet this contract is backloaded...
the last year will probably be around 20 Million dollars and he will probably never see a cent of it..
6 years is a long ways away and there Id be damn sure that barely any of this is guaranteed..
I would be surprised if this deal made it past his 4th year before the cut him loose
