I went around with Swish recently about the best way to counter-protest a Neo-Nazi march. My point being that if you are going to try to match strength against strength, there is a really good chance it will end in violence. His point being that you can't just back down and let it happen unopposed.. both valid points I believe.

So I found this event from 2014 in a small German town.......



Charity turns neo-Nazi march into fundraiser

It calls itself a little town with a big problem. Wunsiedel in Upper Franconia, near the Czech border, was a gathering place for neo-Nazis from across Europe who would make a pilgrimage to the tomb of Adolf Hitler's deputy, buried there from 1988 to 2011.

Despite the town's protest and attempts at stopping the march, the far-right extremists continued to turn up every year.

The 2014 march happened on November 15th, but this year, the group Rechts gegen Rechts, or Rights versus Rights, was on hand with an plan to turn the action into something positive.

Two hundred neo-Nazis turned up and unwittingly put themselves at the start line of a charity walk, raising money benefitting EXIT-Germany, a group that helps people leave the extreme right community and set up a new life for themselves. Every metre they walked, an additional €10 was put into EXIT-Germany's coffers.

"We wanted to create an alternative to counter-demonstrations," Fabian Wichmann, an education researcher at EXIT Germany told The Local on Monday.

The result was €10,000 raised by the marchers completing their walk.

"It was an absolute success," said Inge Schuster, spokesperson for the mayor of Wunsiedel, told The Local. "It created something positive out of (the march), including the €10,000 donation for EXIT-Germany."

Schuster said that the town has been trying to push the march out for years. The municipal government even succeeded in removing Hess from his grave. Undeterred, the neo-Nazis showed up year after year to continue their solemn pilgrimage.

Neo-Nazis took their regular route through the town, but found the streets painted with encouragement to keep them going, complete with start and finishing line.

Pink banners were hung about town with puns like "Schwarz. Rot. Geld." that switched out the "Gold" for the German word for money and thanked the "dear Nazis" for their donation.

Another banner said "Final sprint instead of final victory".

There was even a table offering the unwitting athletes bananas to keep them going, with a banner that said "Mein Mampf" or "My Snack" in English, punning on the title of Hitler's autobiography.

Wichmann noted that only one banana had been taken, though no one could confirm if it had been eaten.

As they crossed the finish line, the neo-Nazis were showered with rainbow confetti and offered certificates of completion. A sign informed them they had just raised money against themselves as they crossed.

The reaction from marchers turned charity walkers was mute, netting only one mention in social media, but that doesn't discount its success.

"They probably won't go away. The history of the town is too important to them, but at least we've created something good out of it," Wichmann said.

This isn't the first time Wichmann's group has protested against the neo-Nazis with humour. In 2011, they came up with what they called a "Trojan t-shirt" that was distributed at a nationalist music festival.

At first it simply said "hardcore rebel" surrounded by Nazi flags. But after going through the wash, the extremists found themselves with a tshirt that said "If you're t-shirt can do it, you can do it too: We'll help you get away from far-right extremism."

However, Schuster noted that the reaction of the town was "overwhelmingly positive."

"If there was a chance to do it again, we would," she said.

I wonder what the Neo-Nazis are trying to accomplish?

I mean other than getting beat-up.

Since seemingly ignoring the issue has led to a rise in numbers in these groups as well as the number of such groups it seems that ignoring them and doing nothing about them isn't working.

I'm not sure what the answer is here, but as you can see on this very board, it seems like people get far more upset with the people standing up to them than the Nazis themselves.

Using Terrorism to shut down free speech is unAmerican.

Yeah, only you seem to forget one thing. They had a permit for Saturday in a public place. They didn't have a right to have a march carrying torches on the U. of Va. campus on Friday night.

So I guess since you aren't whining about that, then protestors had a right to be there on Saturday.

You do realize the constitutional right of free speech is the same for everyone and not just the people you like, right?

No, I am whining about people who stand against free speech while crying about Nazis. I also whine about people who support Terrorism over Racism as if one is better than the other.

We have laws.

As long as they are operating within the laws, the Neo Nazis have every right to do whatever they please.

You know, the Bolsheviks killed way more people than the Nazis. Many of their own people. But the TV educated half-wits don't know that.

A group of Neo Bolsheviks could march down Main St. and 99% of people under 40 years-old wouldn't think anything of it.

Here's what I think: Both you guys are right. This is going to take as multi-pronged an approach as can possibly be mustered. Skewer them on the late-night satire shows. Refute them in the Op-Ed pages. Counter-protest them. Debate them in public forums. Outsmart them with hijacked public events. And yes- be prepared to defend and protect you and yours from any aggression they might initiate. In other words, total resistance on all fronts. Each does what (s)he can.

These people DO NOT represent the traits outlined for us by Jesus. They DO NOT represent the traits outlined for us by our founding fathers.

What this town did was ingenious... and exactly the kind of thing I could get behind if I was one of her citizens. I'm OK with a multiplicity of approaches/tactics where these misguided, reprehensible people are concerned.

AAAAAND.... stand up to them.

Legally.
With words and permits.
With public forums and written blogs/vlogs/letters to the editor.
On home-made podcasts.
And in everyday conversations when this type of bile bubbles up- at the water cooler, in the bar, at the backyard picnic/family reunion.

Direct (legal, lawful) opposition is always a viable option.

If they spout uncontested rhetoric, many will interpret silence as tacit acceptance. This is something that was only allowed to normalize once... because once was more than enough.

This is 2017... not 1937.

Finally, someone on the Left who stands for Free Speech.

I remember a time not long ago where everyone on the Left DEMANDED Free Speech. How times have changed.

I love how the alt-right loves the KKK. Do you think they wear white because it's fashionable? The KKK and Nazis are terrorist organizations. However, the alt-right and Trump's administration do not take them as terrorist threats. They are not listed as terrorists. Through Trump's DHS aide, Katherine Gorka, wife of, former Presidental adviser and present Nazi, Sebastian Gorka, has cut groups funding operations like the one listed in the OP among other ways. I do not think the don cares about white supremacy or sees it as a threat to the foundation of our society.

I think we should just shoot and kill every white person in America. They are all just Neo-Nazis in their hearts.

We should completely abandon trying to work our differences and just freaking murder our enemies because all of us are good and all of them are evil.

We should actually gas them.

I'm proud of the way my home town deals with hate and refuses to ignore it. I grew up with Scott Denman who wrote this letter to the editor of the Daily Record in Wooster, Oh.

As a former resident with deep ties to wonderful Wooster, I am proud that an anti-hate rally took place Sunday in response to anonymous KKK fliers found in various places around town.

Figuratively speaking, we all live in Charlottesville, Virginia; Barcelona, Spain; Charleston, South Carolina; Newtown, Connecticut; and every other place hate/fascism leaves its grotesque stench.

As the most prominent former Charlottesville resident, Thomas Jefferson, declared in 1800, “I have sworn upon the altar of god eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.”

Nazis and nationalists, racists, white supremacists, bigots, misogynists, religious fanatics are, in general, all tentacles of fascism.

Fascism has no place in our pluralistic, tolerant civil society. It thrives on willful ignorance, terror and fear.

As an indivisible part of the human community, we are each duty bound to resist, repudiate and stand in clear opposition to these misanthropes in every violent or apathetic passive form that they appear.

Americans and our allies fought, died and ultimately won World War II to prevent fascism and the hell on earth that it seeks to manifest.

As Jefferson’s clarion call reminds us, it takes “eternal hostility” to prevent the slide of civilization back to the dark ages of totalitarianism. We are called by God, the great spirit, the higher power, or whatever spiritual force we each believe in to stand on the side of love, compassion and justice, and to speak and act coming from this truth.
