I was discussing music with some friends last night, and they really thought my tastes were odd for someone our age and the fact that I'm a music major. Apparently they thought I should only listen to classical and modern stuff. I listen to mostly 50s and 60s rock. My mom says I should be at least 50 because of it.
I was just interested in seeing what people listen to, as I've thought about doing a master's thesis related to the subject. I consider this board to be a pretty good example of the general populus, and I thought I'd see if there was enough interest in the genre to actually pursue it

An interesting topic that I've talk about somewhat often, but I'm a fairly eclectic music fan.
I listen to modern rock (Buckcherry, 3 Days Grace - type stuff). Older 70s Rock (KISS, AC-DC). Standards (Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr.). Jazz & Blues (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, B.B. King, Clapton, Louis Armstrong). Some Country (Alabama, Travis Tritt, Hank). And even some older 80s & 90s era rap (Snoop, Dre, Warren G).
I guess, you could say, I know what I like, I'm just not sure exactly what that is.
A Perfect Circle, Alanis Morrissette, Anthrax, Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Black Keys, Blondie, Blur, Bob Marley, Bryn Terfel, Cat Stevens, Counting Crows, The Cure, Damageplan, David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Frank Sinatra, Green Day, INXS, The Jam, Jellyfish, Johann Sebastian Bach, Korn, Marvin Gaye, My Chemical Romance, Neil Diamond, North Mississippi All Stars (Thanks Saint ), Otis Redding, Tchaikovsky, The Police, The Prodigy, Public Enemy, REM, Rammstein, Sex Pistols, Simon and Garfunkel, The Specials, Tool, Tori Amos, Unified Theory, Van Morrisson, Mozardt, Wolfmother.
I got heavy rock influences but i'm pretty much up for everything i think....i hate the R 'n B stuff though.....
Also like the blues, a bit of pop (depending on the song of course) some country music esepcially the older stuff, jazz (not up-tempo bebop, but softer jazz), and can handle classical music when I'm in a mellow mood, such as before going to sleep.
I like a little of everything from Type O Negative to Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Depends on my mood. I guess I can always listen to metal and thats my favorite type of music. Bands like Fear Factory, Slayer, Pantera, Devil Driver). My all-time favorite band is Nirvana and I like the 90's alternative scene. I listen to old school rap, was really into The Doors, Pink Floyd, The Dead at one time and still listen to that era all the time. I even like swing (Glen Miller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie) and listen to classical sometimes when I am studying or in the car. The only thing I really don't care for is R&B and most rap from today. Some of it is alright, but most sounds the same to me. I do listen to "Backspin" on Sirius all the time to hear some old rap,,when it was original and not the same "yo yo yo f'this hoe, I gots to roll, on my 20's and flow"
My all-time favorite song, "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. I can pop that in anytime, any mood, any situation, and I always love it.
Our honor defend, we will fight to the end, for OHIO! GO BUCKS!
Your pod is alot like mine. I have alot more 50s and 60s stuff though. I listen to modern stuff and I like some older country. Only thing I tend to stay away from is rap.
Thanks guys this is just what I wanted! Keep it comin!

Well, in my point of view all the songs written back then are a hell of a lot better than the ones written now. I mean just think of it, back then you have, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, ACDC, and many many others.
Now would someone rather be listening to them or somekind of Usher crap?
Hmmm... I'll answer by what's on my IPod. Geoff Moore and the Distance, 4Him, D.C. Talk, Tait, Jonnah33, KJ52, Will Smith, Creed, Delirious?, Eminem, Phillips Craig and Dean, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith...
I'm big time into rock(both modern and classic). Some favorites include Zepp, Floyd,Hendrix,Clapton. I love Bob Marley I'm big on country; everything from Johnny Cash up to Kenny Chesney I also like artists such as Michael Buble and Josh Groban. I like a lot of music from U.K. I've realized. I love southern rock and good guitar music(Allman Brothers, Santana, etc.)
I listen to pretty much anything...new hip hop stinks, and country isnt much better.
Modest Mouse is my favorite The White Stripes Anthrax The Black Keys Arctic Monkeys Rise Against Flogging Molly The Avett Brothers The Format Iron Maiden Zeppelin The Doors Beastie Boys Run DMC Rocco Deluca & The Burden Shinedown Breaking Benjamin Chevelle The Decemberists Audioslave
Those are among my favorites...
Its across the board, but I love them.
Also...on Saturday I'm going to the K-Rockathon in Syracuse to see Chris Cornell, Deftones (dont like them), Social Distortion, Strata, Drowning Pool, Black Light Burns, Evans Blue and a couple other bands. Im excited
and a week later I'm goin to the Rock The Bells show in NYC to see Rage Against The Machine (amazing), A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and a truckload of other hip hop acts.
Its gonna be a good week. Theres a chance I might go see Blues Traveller again in there too, but i think its too pricey, with those other shows draining a lot of money.
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"
i've been fascinated with the topic for awhile now...
like many others, i have eclectic tastes, and i've always tried to understand those who only like 1 or 2 genres...honestly, i tend to think that those folks are not so much into music...all the people i know that hold music to be very important to them are people with wider range of tastes...maybe that's a music-snob sort of opinion, but...
so how is it one can enjoy Wu Tang Clan, Curtis Mayfield, Cat Stevens, Green Day, etc. simultaneously? my current line of thinking is that, as with different friends i hang out with, each of these types of music brings something different to the table...something distinct to appreciate...
e.g. some music i'm turned onto by the lyrics...Jimmy Buffett isn't blazing any musical trails, but he's a good storyteller, and those stories brought me into a mindset where i can appreciate the music, as well...
other stuff i love has nothing to do with the lyrics involved, rather it's the sound that draws me...reading Pink Floyd's lyrics, they come across as trying-too-hard-to-be-deep-and-meaningful, but their use of sounds, music, and silence makes me listen, and allows me to appreciate the lyrics more...
in a somewhat large nutshell, that's kinda how i imagine a lot of you who claim to have ecletic tastes are, as well...you can appreciate different facets of music from all the different artists out there...
Well, at age 30, my tastes in music has shifted a little bit since my high school and college days, but I still listen to probably more hip hop than anything, although there's a lot of it that has come out the last couple years that I don't care for. Next would be a variety of rock music including alternative and punk, followed by top 40. Once in a great while, I'll listen to some older stuff, but it's not very often. I don't listen to country or any kind of metal.
I just got done watching a documentary on HDNET about the Motown days. Man, was that great music. That's all we listened to in High School in the early 70's.
And now, I'm listening to the 90's music on XM and completely digging it. Interesting that the melodies are derived from the tunes of Motown. Go Browns!! And go Supremes and Temptations!!

I have The 90's programmed in on my favorites on XM, along with Raw, The City, The Heat, The Hitlist, Kiss, 20 on 20, Ethel, Squizz, Fungus, Lucy, and Flight 26.
There, that about sums up my musical preferences right there.
I'm all over the place too ... I can stand just about anything, and I have favorite songs from just about every genre you can think of ... rap, heavy metal, alternative, country, r&b, pop, rock, classic rock, sinatra type stuff, classical, opera, etc.
My two favorites are probably classical and alternative, which just show how all-over the place I am.
Anything for the sake of higher education! I was almost a music major myself. You're looking at the proud recipient of the Louie Armstrong award.
Anyways. I'm 25 and I listen to mainly techno/european dance. I stear clear of top 40 and most things that are "popular". I just don't like getting burnt out on the same old crap. I loved Dave Matthews before he was radioized.
I still dig older sounds that the masses have forgotten about. Tantric, Days of the New, Collective Soul, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Perfect Circle, Joss Stone. I am all over the map too.
I guess the bottom line is since I studied music theory for 3 years, I like groups/musicians who have actual talent. Local music to me is the best. They do what they want without the suits influencing them or their sounds. Eric Jerardi, Second Echo, Orange Willard.... good, pure stuff. They do it for them, and that's what music is about.
I like a little bit of everything but my favorite genres are punk, big beat, drum-n-bass and industrial/goth. Pretty much anything with a good beat and loud, 3-chord crunchy guitars

I'm jealous...That Hip Hop concert is gonna be tha' shizznit!!! Those are some of my all time favorite rappers.
"Awww Nawww Big Slimdog!!!" -Eminem, "B**** Please Pt. II"
Well, I can tell you that my musical entertainment has always come from the classic rock era. Such bands as, The Beatles, The Doors, Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and many other classic rock bands.
However, I also love some of the 80's and newer rock bands! From the 80's I have to say bands like Pat Benatar, Guns N Roses, Poison, Cinderella, some Ratt, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Ozzy (and original Black Sabbath), are some of the better groups too me, now there are some individual songs as well, Dramarama: Anything, Anything, Berlin: No More Words and The Metro, Scandal: The Warrior and Goodbye to You, Asia: It's Over Now and Heat of the Moment, GTR: When the heart rules the mind, Duran Duran: Hungry like the Wolf and Rio, INXS: Devil Inside (and a few other songs from them also), Skid Row had a few good songs, Enuff Z'Nuff: A New Thing (poison copy band), Til Tuesday: Voices Carry, The Firm: (feat. Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page) Radioactive and Satisfaction Guarenteed, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force: (feat. Joel Lynn Turner on vocals), Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett: I love Rock N Roll and probably much more.
Now even newer music from 1990 til now! I loved the whole Grunge thing, Alice in Chains is still one of my fav bands. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Sound Garden were good also. Candlebox and STP were good. Korn, Disturbed, Godsmack, Stained, are some others that I like. Not much for Rap but some Rock/Rap fusion has been ok, Linkin Park and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I'm not big on Limp Bizkit. Early Eminen is good cause it's funny. Nickelback is good, Lenny Kravitz, The Smashing Pumkins, The Pixies, The Pretenders, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Joe Walsh, The Eagles, The Stones, The Who, Elton John, The Police, Van Halen (Roth era mostly), Fleetwood Mac, some KISS, some Alice Cooper, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Def Leppard (especiallky early stuff), John Couger Melloncamp, Johnny Cash and too many more to name.
The list of concerts I've seen goes like this:
Iron Maiden w/ Twisted Sister Ronnie James Dio Van Halen's Monsters of Rock: feat. Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica, The Scorpions, and VH w/ Sammy Hagar. The Rolling Stones Paul McCartney Robert Plant w The Black Crowes AC/DC RUSH w/ Candlebox Van Halen w/ Hagar and Alice in Chains Guns N Roses w/ Soundgarden Guns N Roses and Metallica Pink Floyd Lynyrd Skynyrd w/ Ted Nugent Lynyrd Skynyrd w/ Peter Frampton and Tommy Shaw KISS, in full makeup Fleetwood Mac Motley Crue Def Leppard Warrant and a few other small ones.
Awesome responses guys! Thanks for your input. I think researching the development of rockability is worthwhile.
That being said I share alot of interests with you all. I'm all over the map. Right now its The Beatles, they had a certain chemistry that is rare among groups. Even in the end when they were at each other's throats they made amazing music.
Keep em comin!

I listen to rap that can best be described as dense, abstract, and like nothing you've heard before.
Here are some lyrics of one of my favorite rappers Aesop Rock:
