nobody said vince young would do what he's doing
you cannot teach being clutch, there are so few guys that have it, you can probably count them on one hand in the nfl... Well....... Not to toot my own horn (O.K., maybe a little) but I defended Vince pretty adamently against the majority of this board.I even talked about trading up for him if he slid out of the top 5. troy smith is as clutch as it gets in college football, quinn may have the upside, but he's not on the same planet when it comes to playing in big games, and making plays when you need to... and while ohio state's receivers are good, they don't ever have to make these amazing catches, troy puts it right on the money every time One thing I will say in Brady's defense is that he was playing with half the talent Troy had around him. The big deficiency was the offensive line. Quinn was running for his life more often then not against the good teams they played. Their offensive line was terrible. His receivers wern't much better either......if you put Brady on OSU's team, I don't see there being a drop off. When he gets time, he can pick a team apart......the problem all year has been the getting time part. I think Troy is a great player, don't get me wrong, I just think Quin gets the raw end of the deal in many discussions just because he played with inferior talent around him (see his last 3 games against elite programs - their defense and offensive line just got abused). I don't think we need a QB (which has been pretty obvious the last 7 years).......what we do need is an OL/DL. The majority of our trench players wouldn't start on any NFL team (well, except the ones that suck as bad as we do). If we're going to take him, we better not do it in the top 10 in my opinion. Trade down, get an extra pick or two and then take him if he slides to you in the middle of the round. Otherwise, get a big hog upfront (on either side of the ball). I wouldn't mind Smith because I do think he has a ton of talent but I don't know where he fits in the grand scheme of things. I know I wouldn't want to put him behind our current offensive line (or any other young QB that I wanted to keep around for more then 2-3 years). JMHO. to start the year, notre dame's offensive line, receivers, and quarterback were all projected to be better than ohio state... i think they underachieved, and i know they didn't get squat from the running game... like i said, brady will be picked ahead of troy, because he has the tools, the size, the frame, 2 years in charlie weis' offense, which has proven to be able to win super bowls... but... just because you have all of those things, doesn't mean you're guaranteed anything... how many times do we see a quarterback come out of nowhere? or exceed expectations? you can compare manning and brady to quinn and smith... peyton and quinn have the upside, brady and smith play huge in big games, i'll take the latter... sometimes it's not about having the best "quarterback" but having the best winner, and that is troy...

Well I agree and disagree. I agree they were a bunch of underachievers but disagree they were considered more talented then OSU's offensive unit.
Notre Dame's players weren't neccessary better, they were just overhyped. The media wants everyone to think Notre Dame is an elite team, even if they're not. Would any other school honestly get a BCS bid if they got beat by 26 @ home and 22 on the road against the only top 15 teams they played? ND just doesn't have the talent that teams like OSU, Michigan, USC, etc. have, regardless of what the media might say.

i think i'm just more terrified of him going elsewhere, and turning out to be what he was at ohio state, and haunting this team for the next decade...
God knows this team already has enough ghosts...
i think phil savage will make the right decision, i know the pressure is really going to come down hard come april, especially if troy rips apart a very good SEC defense...

I dont see him being a top 10 pick like Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso do

Most especially Baltimore, where I guess if you want to play it that way, we gotta have them keep winning to decrease the chances of this happening. Right now, they really don't NEED a QB, but you have to replace McNair at some point soon.
BTW, sorry to repeat, the Ravens have never drafted an Ohio State player.

i think i'm just more terrified of him going elsewhere, and turning out to be what he was at ohio state, and haunting this team for the next decade... You can't draft to keep players away from other teams, you have to do what's best for our team and unfortunately, I just don't see how drafting a QB falls within the latter. If you're afraid of him getting to Baltimore, barring a trade up, it's highly unlikely. Baltimore is fighting for the best record in the NFL and I don't see Smith lasting untill the last 4 picks of the 1st round. Someone will take him in the middle of the round or a team at the top of the second will trade up (ahead of Baltimore) to get him. I thought Baltimore might be interested in him but with Indy losing, that possibility just went out the window IMO. you can look all around the league at guys who were passed up by teams, hell, tom brady was passed up 6 times by every team...
tim couch was supposed to be better than donovan mcnabb.. couch had all the tools... Sure you can but it also depends heavily upon the situation the player gets put in. Couch had absolute bums blocking for him, he was never put in a legitimate situation to be a winning QB. He never had an elite RB playing with him, hell he didn't even have a good RB and he sure as hell didn't have a #1 wideout. He broke in to the league with a terrible expansion team........McNabb on the other hand went to a team that didn't have a collection of the NFL's scraps. He atleast had some talent around him and a good running back in Deuce Staley to take a lot of the pressure off of him.

That could be the Steelers,....I thought the Holmes pick was a sheer move of genius, outside of the fact they had lost A-R-E.

and it's not so much us keeping a player away from another team, as much as it is us having to hear about how we didn't draft troy smith when we had the chance, as we go through our umpeenth quarterback since 1999... I understand what you're saying but we passed on the best player we may see in our lifetimes (LaDainian Tomlinson). It's not like it will be the first or the last time. You can't draft players based on that premise alone. JMHO.

mcnabb went to a better team, but got nothing from his running game, and had mediocre receivers (with the exception of owens for that year and a half) Staley ran for almost 1,300 yards McNabb's rookie year. I would say that's getting "something" from the running game. I'm not saying Smith won't be successful, I actually think he will. Our problems don't neccessarily stem from poor QB play.........they're a result of having a terrible offensive and defensive line for 7 years running. Any NFL calibur QB can look great when he has time to throw......just as any LB and CB can be a pro bowler if given a pass rush or cover from offensive lineman.

I don't buy that "any QB can look good with a line and running game" theory. See Kyle Boller. You've either got it, or you don't, period. Yes running games and protection help, but without "it" you won't succeed. Look at the way Smith carries himself. It's the "Vince Vibe" revisited. You can just see he's a winner. Couch never had that "winner look." And Frye...LOL...well Frye looks like a complete loser. His demeanor is terrible.

Yes running games and protection help, but without "it" you won't succeed Kyle Boller is one example but so is Trent Dilfer (with the same franchise). Trent essentially won a super bowl by not doing anything stupid. I don't think Trent has "it" but he was successful managing the game. I think there a good examples for either theory but in the long run, great trench play decide games. If having God at QB won you games, Peyton Manning would win the super bowl every year. The reason he doesn't? Their defensive line might suck worse then ours at stopping the run.......and my god is that saying something. You win, (at any level), upfront. Teams that control the LOS, control the game. Don't believe me? See the enormous difference between (4-9) Cleveland and (6-7) Pittsburgh. It may only be a two game difference but their units in the trenches are lightyears ahead of us.....as was evidence a few days ago.

i think the comparisons of troy smith and drew brees are legitimate too...
they are very similiar with their pocket presence, arm strength...
and look what drew brees has done in new orleans...
this team was bad enough to get reggie bush in the draft last year...
and let's not forget, while we lost lecharles bentley, so did they, and they still look great... the defense is still questionable, but that offense is potent...
it was just like one guy made this huge difference...

My example in that regard is Orlando Pace,....LT just smashed one of Faulk's (?) records, set behind OP at left tackle. Was it his 2d or 3rd year they won the Super Bowl after being pretty dismal,....

However, he isn't worth a high round pick. If he was there somewhere in the 4th round, I might take him....before that, not a chance. Didn't you klnow this is a thread based in fantasy Peen? Remember all the homers from last year Peen? Some had OSU players in the first four rounds of their mocks coming to Cleveland. And how would that have turned out? But memories can become short when your heads in the clouds. It's the Heisman Homer Hoopla that comes every year Peen. What's new? All they need to do is look at the % of "greats" that the Heisman has given us. Yes,they are the "best" collsge players. But it's odd how they are the greatest in college, but far less than half of "the greatest college players" ever turned out to be jack in the NFL. Thay don't call it the Heisman jinx for nothing. But they're to busy basking in the glory and the fantasy that goes along with it Peen. Might as well let em' have at it! It'a all-right to be itty bitty, But not at QB In a northern city With no OL And no running agme Itty bitty Troy Would end up lame. Thank ya very much........

Then tell me how hyped you are when you look at this list? What's the odds of "the best college athlete" being worth a first round pick? Come on down out of those clouds and get back to earth and do the math here.
If you wish to ignore the odds, and especially given Troy's size, then you do that. Sorry if I don't particicpate. I try to be practical and look at the odds realisticly. And they aren't in your favor.
Hell Archie Griffen won it two years in a row and the Bungles suckered for that homer pick just like you're advocating here. Now where did that get them again? Good luck with your dream dude.
I wish Troy nothing but the best. I'm an OSU and Browns fan. But I've seen "Homerism" rule the day before in Cincy. Bad experiment there!
The odds are a Heisman winner will never live up to the hype. Good luck beating those odds.

Truth is that nobody truly knows how the cards will play when players are drafted... you can hype up a guy and then have him turn around and be a bust... but you can also draft a guy in the 7th and have the guy become a HOFer.
As for Troy... I'm undecided... I don't like to look at mock drafts until the season is done and we know where the teams are decently going to be located for the draft. The guy has awesome vision and can make a star out of any receiver in any game and He also definately knows how to win. Does that mean we take him? We just have to sit on our hands.

j/c For a qb, size means a LOT more in the NFL than it does in the NCAA. Brees and Vick are similar in size, every other good qb is larger.

reggie bush is doing quite well with the saints... leinart is going to be good... Ok, two big prototypical NFL qbs and a great RB... what does this have to do with Troy Smith? Smith will get drafted and may someday be pretty good... but he's not a "sure thing" and in the first round teams look for "sure things" ...... The Buckeyes have several players I'd like to have, Troy Smith just isn't one of them....

Troy Smith will not be drafted in the first round. The Heisman doesn't change his status, unless he can get measured while standing on it. He's a great kid and a great college QB. You are right, first round is for sure things. I want a sure thing at LT so we can move our RT to his rightful position and sure up two spots on the line with one pick.

Did anyone here him say this?
Not a great link, but hey, he said it.
The more Drew Brees lights up the league, the more and more I think that this may be a good fit for us. I am the biggest Troy Smith hater there is. The Kid was my high school QB and we went 5-6. Granted he was a sophomore in high school, but he just doesn't seem to be that same kid that I knew when I was in high school.
He was a brash/brazen/reckless, adolescent, who could care less about anyone but "Troy". Even the coaches could not handle him, and he transferred to Glenville from St. Eds.
This is NOT, what I have seen from Troy this year; I have seen a mature, confident leader, who (once I get his picture from my yearbook scanned, I will post it) has gotten bigger and stronger every single year. He says the right things when he did not; he does the rights things, when he did not.
Please do not take this as a homer, "Go draft the first Ohio State player you can"!!! thread, because that is not I. For God's sake I live in Ann Arbor.

Drew Brees is only 6 foot. I said back then (when Drew was in the draft) WE GOTTA GET THIS GUY, and pimped Brees from the get go. He just had that "it" factor, he slung the ball all around the field, and put up huge numbers at Purdue. Obviously, I never predicted he would be one of the Elite QB's in the league (no one did or he would have went in the first round )
Then Draft time came and he fell to the first pick, of the second round, which by some accounts was a "reach".
Since Brees clearly isn't just your average QB, he is turning back-up WR into studs, and without his best wide outs on the field threw for 5TD;s, against the "Best Defense in the NFC". My question is, why can't Troy Smith be just like Drew Brees?
He seems to have the arm strength, and that slight mobility that a QB needs. He has shown, that he WANTS to be a drop back passer, and NOT a runner. Am I wrong to think he may be a possibility to us? If he is available? I am not saying we take him by any means, lord knows we have SOOO many holes on both Lines, and Corner.
But, if we sat him a year like Carson Palmer, built up our Linemen VIA free agency and the draft, then let him start once we have a better line in place. Couldn't he be a hometown star? I know this is going to get hated on, but we cannot shun people based on our perceived deficiencies.
The only thing I would be afraid of is the "Heisman Curse".
Just some random, rambles for you to think about....

I would love to have Troy, but my greatest wish is that he goes anywhere other than Baltimore. He is one guy I just can't bring myself to ever root against. I think the Rats are one team that would definitely grab him if he is available.

I think a team like Miami, or Carolina would take him before then.

Pitdawg in all due respect.
Troy Smith right now has a more complete skill set than ANY QB we have had since 99.
I dont know how you can start talking about fantasy when it comes to considering him as a draft choice.

Troy Smith right now has a more complete skill set than ANY QB we have had since 99. Troy Smith is a GREAT college qb... but Troy Smith has not stepped on the field in the last 2 years where the team around him was not as good if not better than the other team... in most cases by a considerable margin.... maybe he will be good, maybe he will be great, I really don't know but he would be a HUGE stretch with our first round pick and probably won't be there with our second round pick and even if he is, I wouldn't take him unless he can put on 130 pounds and learn to block.....

I would love to see the Browns draft Joe Thomas with the 3rd or 4th pick in the draft and then concentrate on trading up into the 1st round by giving their second and a player for the team right in front of Baltimore to pick Troy Smith!
Thomas, Smith would do wonders to this team. Anderson and Frye do not have the leadership abilities that this man has. Troy, being from Cleveland will represent this city and fans very well. He has been through hard time and so has the city and fans. It's time he takes his success in Columbus to Cleveland. Savage bring on home the hometown hero.
Only thing is, is the 2nd round pick and a player good enough? That player would likely have to be Brian Russell (FA though) Brodney Pool. Maybe we can get rid of Droughns there. I donno. I just really want Troy, but Joe is my #1
