Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson named Kevin Hogan as the team's backup quarterback Sunday.

“The backup quarterback this week will be Kevin Hogan," Jackson said.

“I just think when I look at what we are trying to accomplish this week. I have watched the guy move the team, do some good things, not that Cody (Kessler) didn’t. Cody has done some good things, too. I just think this week I felt like Kevin is more in line with where we are and what we are trying to accomplish this week.”

Hogan, who is in his second season since being drafted in the fifth round by the Kansas City Chiefs, is excited for the opportunity.

“It feels good just that Coach has confidence in me to go out there and make some plays. I feel like I have done a good job in camp with preparation and learning the offense and the ins and outs of what coach is looking for from the quarterback. I am going to do my best to help [starting quarterback] DeShone [Kizer] in whatever way he needs to be ready to go on Sunday, and I am going to do the same. I am going to prepare as if I am the starter so that I am ready whenever," Hogan said.

The former Stanford quarterback played well in the preseason.

“He just kept making plays. He just kept making plays. I think we all saw that. He did some things really well. The guy can move around and complete balls and make plays with the ball. The one thing for me as a head coach, I think you reward people who play really, really well and do the things that you need done, not that I am saying that Cody doesn’t. Kevin did and he showed that so I am giving him the first crack at it," Jackson said.

Whether he has served as the second string or third string quarterback, Hogan has approached each day the same.

“My mindset has always been just control what I can control. People are going to say whatever they want; and for me it is just about having the right attitude and mindset and making sure I am getting better each day and taking the coaching, being a good teammate. I never really worried about any of that stuff. I was just hopeful for an opportunity and whenever that may have come to take advantage of it. I felt a lot better this camp than even in the spring, and I think that was just going through the installs again with coach for the second time and becoming more familiar with it. I would say that it helped a lot," Hogan said.

His experience in Cleveland this year has been 'night and day' from last season.

"It is night and day. I love being here. Last year, I came over and I was still kind of learning the offense week by week here and then this spring and summer just being much more detailed and listening to what coach wants from each install and the way that the plays are supposed to be run was huge for me. Going through the spring and then then going through it again in the summer and camp, I felt a lot more comfortable and was able to play faster and more confidently and make some plays.”

I mean what is not to like?

makes quick reads-check

throws a pretty deep ball- check

knows the offense- check

can run if needed- check

fluid drop back and release- check

this is our guy in my mind.

let him start, imo he has star quality written all over him.

He is definitely not the answer. He might make a decent backup. Once the Ravens realized he was in there to stay Hogan was not as effective. And again made a very poor throw in a crucial situation. Kizer is better by far. This is a perfect case of the Back up being raised up and get over rated praise.
No starter for me.

Week 2 and we're already calling for heads and a change of qb.

I guess the giants should bench Eli manning too.

This. It sure doesn't take much, does it?

I will say I am comfortable with Hogan as the backup.

Way early to make a switch now. Let's see how Kize trends over the next 4-5 games.

If he is still stinking up the joint, then we can revisit this topic.

I can see your point with the backup being raised up and getting overrated praise, but still, Kizer is not better by far... at least so far.

We'll see what happens with Kizer in the next few games, hopefully he will get better.

he may not be the answer, he also might be, same with Kizer. He made 1 bad throw trying to get the ball over the top of defender, kizerr had about 30 bad throws..lets not discount hogan because of the Kizer love fest, he hasn't proven anything yet either, if you look at both bodies of work this season/preseason, anyone with a set of eyes can see Hogan is much more effective. But the coach has decided to put his guy out there and take lumps, we will see how it goes. Lets not forget, he was a MUCH better QB in college than Kizer. It's funny people want to discount the backup because he's the backup. I think it would have been interesting had we not drafted Kizer how the QB game would have played out.

I don't think he's the answer, but I believe Kiser needs time to progress and etc and that he should start. I seriously think Kiser should be studying, observing and learning.

j/c:

A few thoughts:

--Comparing Kize to Eli is weird. The guy has been doing it a long time and is a Super Bowl champion.

--I don't think it is obvious that Kize is "way better" than Hogan. I don't think Baltimore's D changed. I do think that Hogan made quicker reads.

--I think that starting a qb controversy would be a huge mistake. We chose Kize and should roll w/him.

--When it was first announced, I said the move to make Kize the starter was risky. Rushing a young qb can backfire. Not saying it will. Just saying that it can. I do worry about Kize falling back into some bad mechanical habits that affects his accuracy. I also wonder if he will become overwhelmed. The guy never even had a snap count at ND. He doesn't know how to take snaps from under center. He didn't have a lot of reads to make. That's a lot, man!

--With all that said, once you choose a rookie to start, you better damn well stay w/him for at least this year.

--QB controversies are never good.

Is the OP related to Hogan?

Why would anyone think that the problem is the QB?

Pass D is horrid, OL is not playing good, no ground game, no average/good Wr's and TE's, bad execution and penalties.

QB is once again the escape goat.

Improve the D and feed the ground game. Limit the QB play, anything else and its just an HC trying to save his skin.

Either that, or just go and sign KAP.

Kzer is still the man. Easily.

Hogan hasn't learned how to generate the turnovers and sack total yet.

Seriously, solid backup. I would like to do a grotesque skull transplant, with Hogan's brain on Kizer's body. But not a possibility. Just hope by week three we are starting to see results rather than listening to assurances.

Some of you guys are unbelievable.

When Hogan came in the Def thought we were running the wildcat (they did not know kizer was out) and committed to a run. He hit a lucky deep ball. He also hit a very luck strike because of Duke making a insane catch. He was high on almost all his throws, and very inaccurate.

He has a weak arm, and if he was a starting QB, he would have been picked up anywhere else when he was on the practice squad.

My concern is this...If we exit this season with no answers it's been a waste. We need to know if we need a QB at #1 or wherever we fall (it'll be top 3) We have the firepower to maneuver in the draft but need to know where we stand with these guys.

I do find it funny that most said johnny needed to be given a chance, Hoyer needed a chance, etc.....yet we get a young actually physically gifted QB that looks the part and after 2 games you want him benched. Seems like some are looking at "other" physical traits instead of anything that has to do with football.

This thread kinda reminds me of Kelly Holcomb. Remember him?
______________________________________________

A backup to Peyton Manning of Indianapolis, Holcomb was cut in the 2000 off-season to be allowed to compete for the starting job with the Cleveland Browns, following Bruce Arians who left as the QB coach of the Colts to become the offensive coordinator of the Browns. The Browns had drafted Tim Couch with the number 1 pick in the 1999 draft. During their time in Cleveland, Holcomb occasionally outshined the former number one pick. In his first season as a Brown, Holcomb played in only one game which he completed seven of twelve passes for 114 yards and a passing touchdown. In Holcomb's second season he played in four games and started two games in which he threw eight touchdowns and four interceptions with 790 passing yards and a strong play-off performance in a loss to the Steelers where he threw for 429 yards and three touchdowns.[2] In 2003, his third season, he had more playing time playing ten games and starting eight of them. He replaced Tim Couch as starting quarterback during that season. In that season he threw ten touchdowns and twelve interceptions. In his final season as a Brown Jeff Garcia replaced him as starting quarterback. Holcomb only played in four games and started two of them in which he threw seven touchdowns and five interceptions with 737 yards passing.

We need to find out what we have in Kizer. We have set ourselves up to potentially trade for a top flight QB in the coming draft. or else to grab a boatload of talent if Kizer works out. We have to know about him, though.

This is good stuff right here. Hot takes complete with grammatical and spelling errors making it incomprehensible.

Play Kizer and see what happens. Most likely lose games. Draft QB next year. It's really that simple folks.

Woah. We had 5 turnovers and allowed 24 points.......... Nothing in the defense was bad.

Our running game certainly could have been better. Our OL pass blocks very well.

QB play lost us the game on Sunday. No question about it.

You're playing against Terrelle Suggs, you can't hold the ball that long. Not when he's behind you and you have no sense of where he is. That's how you get stripped.

And the interception in the endzone was completely Kizer's fault. Not to mention throwing a bullet at like 8 yards away Duke Johnson who is running away from you (that's not an easy pass to catch in the first place).

I'm sure I could go on..........

I don't want to bench Kizer (just to be clear). We knew this was coming with a rookie QB. Our running game has been worse than I thought it would be this year too. BUT, let's not start blaming the defense.

5 turnovers is how you lose football games. 24 points and all...........

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Even with the backup Qb being the most popular guy in cleveland always, its only because we've never had the guy to hold the spot, and until you do, everyone is fair game for the conversation, and Kizer hasn't shown anything that says we should blindly put our faith in him, i mean sub 60% completion, 400 yards in 2 games, 1:4 int ration and a 55 rating...i mean come on..lets not pretend its peyton manning having a bad game...he's everything the scouting report said. So until he matures and takes the job, I don't think anything should be given to him, especially the starting job. He didn't win it, he was given it. Now its up to him/Hue how it plays out. But I think we are still taking a QB high next year, gotta keep drafting them until you find one. Eventually one will stick.

I don't think this is so much about Hogan, as it is that Kizer looks so far away. If he looks this bad next week I think you have to think about shutting him down a couple weeks and let him watch from sidelines. Have him watch plays with an earpiece and see them develop from the sideline and maybe something will click, what we've done so far with him isn't going to work. If Hue only runs 10 times next game then we seriously need to have a discussion about that.. we should be running minimum 35 times a game

I'm not saying Kizer is Manning by any means, but it isn't like Manning lit it up his first year. He had more ints than TD's, sub 60% completion percentage and a 70 QB rating his first season. Again, I'm not sold on Kizer and I agree if he doesn't show significant improvement over the course of the year we need to take a QB next year. I also don't agree he was given the job - the other QB's were just worse than him, or possibly equal, without as much upside.

P. Manning is mentioned a lot and I can understand why. The thing you have to remember is Manning was probably mentored to be an NFL QB since he was 6 or 7 years old being who his father is. I would think the learning curve for him wasn't as great as it is for others.

and the fact he was blue chip coming out of college, went to a team that was bad enough to take him at #1 overall. So yeah, its understandable he wasn't too good. Now Kizer, gets picked as a project by a team that was bad enough they should have taken a blue chip QB(had there been one) and now forced to start because the team neglected the QB position for years..doesn't sound like the recipe for success to me, which is why I don't think we should expect too much from Kizer and most likely will be taking one next year. But if you are trying to make the kid the guy moving forward, you've got to give him a conducive situation, thats not what Hue is doing. Another couple stinkers in a row and you have to hit reset and let him sit awhile and breath, then try again in a couple weeks. 3 wins this year seems like a mountain

I will just tell what I've told before...

Kizer is an enigma...has this dripping raw potential...99 percent of everyone will tell tell you prior to the draft he needs at bare minimum a year to red shirt and learn...heck some states a few years..

The reason I felt osweiler or Kessler should start over him (before Kessler regressed even more..well osweiler some what too) was they've played NFL snaps and they should take the beating first and heck maybe even prove their worth. Starting an extremely raw QB against legions as Pitt and Balt...is stupid, enough said there.

Considering Osweiler is gone...Kessler has seem to regressed...I would definately give Hogan a shot...im not saying he is Elway by any chance, but right now he seems to get the picture of the QB clock in the NFL...while Kizer being a raw rookie, is clueless...

IMHO Kizer needs to learn the game and internal clock...he is being overwhelmed for a reason...he is not ready, nor anyone except the Browns organization felt he is ready to lead an NFL team...and it has shown true.

Wishing whomever is out there, the best of luck...they will need it.

Starting Hogan over Kizer, imo, is like Indy starting Curtis Painter. We'd be intentionally tanking.

At least, that's what it would feel like. And I said that I wanted Kizer to sit.

People calling for Kizer to sit still have unrealistic expectations for this team.

Hogan will never be more than an NFL Backup. Kizer could be a lot more.

you had a good run Hank.
