I hope they can find a way to do it, but when his contract is up the Yankees or some other big market team will be backing the Brinks truck up to his house. It sucks, but that's the way it goes for small market teams. This is how it used to be for small market teams. The Rays locked up Evan Longoria, the Pirates locked up Andrew McCutchen, the Marlins locked up Giancarlo Stanton, the Twins locked up Joe Mauer, the Brewers locked up Ryan Braun, the Reds locked up Joey Votto, the Royals locked up Salvador Perez ... ... Every MLB team is sitting on tons of money. Whether they choose to spend it is a different question entirely. And the Marlins are trying to trade Stanton, Mauer's contract screwed the Twins for a long while, the Brewers wanted to toss Braun out of town in 2013+2014, etc. Signing the player to a huge contract doesn't always work out. The Indians gave Pronk that big deal and his contract hurt us for a while.

its funny, Indians are in the bottom half of the league in payroll and neck and neck with the team that has the highest payroll. Goes to show you, having a competent scouting department pays dividends. Browns should take notice Unfortunately it can't stay this way. It will be great if the Cleveland front office can secure Jose Rameriz and Fransisco Lindor as teammates on the Tribe for years to come. They're only 25 and 23 respectively. And likely entering their prime baseball years. Jose is signed through 2021, and the Tribe has options for '21 and '22. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/220787126/jose-ramirez-has-5-year-extension-with-tribe/

Indians reportedly offered Lindor a $100M renewal this past spring and he turned it down. They still have a few years of control and lots of time to up that offer, so its not an urgent issue. They still hold some leverage in that they can offer a long term contract at less than market value because Lindor still has significant time under their control at way below his value.

If the the Twins had any foresight they would have let Mauer walk. He was a zero power catcher with an injury history. It was clear he was going to have to move to first at some point (and when he did he would become much less valuable). Braun had injury and PED issues, the Brewers were also rebuilding.

Every MLB team is sitting on tons of money. Whether they choose to spend it is a different question entirely. I totally agree with you. Hopefully the Indians choose to spend it. So it's hard to complain about big market teams like the Yankees stealing players when your team has the money to pay them, but just pockets it instead. I'm not complaining at all, and regardless of every team having a lot of money, the big market teams do have more. I don't blame the players for leaving for more money either - almost anyone would leave their job to make more at the exact same job. I hope they can work it out, but if not I'll certainly have enjoyed his time in Cleveland. We've got a few more years on his current one anyhow.

reports are that Lindor is looking for Arod type money 250million+ Based on his 1st 2 seasons, he just might be worth that, or more, by the time he hits free agency.

reports are that Lindor is looking for Arod type money 250million+ Given where MLB revenue is and how good Lindor is, that makes a lot of sense. Harper will probably get around $500 million after the 2018 season.

reports are that Lindor is looking for Arod type money 250million+ Over how many years? $250M for a 250 year contract would be nice to our bottom line. If I were the Indians, I'd offer a higher per year contract extension, but for only 3 years. He'd get a huge premium and hit free agency faster (the Lebron NBA model). Maybe he wants the stability too, but that's depends on him.

At the time, the Twins were opening Target Field. The long term contract to Mauer was necessary to put butts in the seats regardless of the long term impact on wins and losses.

reports are that Lindor is looking for Arod type money 250million+ Has any contract in that price range ever worked out for the team that gave it to him? Even the Pujols ones seemed like he was worth it, and it crippled the Angels payroll flexibility.

Many knew Pujols' contract was a lemon the moment he signed it (even still, I don't think anyone thought Pujols go this far south this quick). Most of these giant contracts are signed when players are past their prime or about to be past their prime (it takes about six years for a MLB to hit free agency). What the Indians need to try and do with Lindor is try and buyout one or two free agent years with money on the front end. He'd still end up leaving, but the team would be getting his best years.

the next "bad" contract is Giancarlo Stanton. Sure, he's worth it now, but Miami (or whoever takes him) will be paying him A LOT well past his prime.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Thanks guys. Very interesting, informative posts for me. I never really thought much about the off-field angle of the game before. This aspect of MLB will get more of my interest this offseason now that baseball has my undivided attention. By the way. Dawg LB above: I think I can relate to the underlying sentiment, and I second the feeling.
