A Steelers fan painted a swastika on the team flag because the NFL protests made him angry

https://www.yahoo.com/news/steelers-fan-painted-swastika-team-184716424.html

A Pennsylvania man upset his neighbors by painting a red swastika over the Pittsburgh Steelers flag following their decision to stay in the locker room last Sunday.

Army veteran Anton Uhl told local media that he was insulted by the NFL team's decision to remain in the locker room during a performance of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” before Sunday's game, WPXI-TV reported.

“I’m upset the Rooneys didn’t want to participate in the national anthem,” Uhl said, referring to the team's founders and current owners. “So to me, they’re anti-American.”

Uhl said that although he agreed players had a right to protest, there should be limits set in place for what he deems more acceptable political demonstrations for players.

“If they want to demonstrate, they have every right to do that,” Uhl said. “Out of uniform in a public forum, not in a uniform representing the Rooneys. My choice, I find it was upsetting not to have patriotic participation.”

Uhl also said the NFL players involved in the league-wide protest are setting a bad example for children.

“There’s a lot of kids that want to play football,” Uhl said. “You don’t need to pay millions of dollars for these people to stand in some type of, kneeling down, giving disrespect for everything.”

However, Uhl, who has since taken down the flag, later admitted the Nazi decoration was wrong.

“I want to tell your viewers that I was wrong in placing a swastika on the Steelers' flag. The flag has been removed," he told WPXI in a statement. "I'm not apologizing, but should not have singled out just the Steelers. The swastika, a symbol of hate, should be worn by all the NFL players who do not stand for our nation's flag and anthem. If the players and owners want to demonstrate against President Trump and the disparity against races, then they should unite in uniform and march on Washington."

Police: 'No evidence' of excessive force in Michael Bennett incident

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20863...michael-bennett

ESPN.com news services

Police said Friday that they found "no evidence" that officers used excessive force in detaining Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett during an August incident in Las Vegas and that they had reasonable suspicion to make the stop.

Bennett has accused police officers of racial profiling, saying they pointed guns at him and used excessive force in the incident, which occurred outside a nightclub after the Aug. 26 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.

The body camera of the officer who initially detained Bennett was not turned on. Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said Friday that police sorted through 861 videos, including from body cameras from other officers and hotel security cameras, and found that 193 were pertinent to the investigation. From there, they said they pieced together a timeline of the incident and played video for the media at a news conference. They said Bennett's detainment lasted about 10 minutes, seven of which were spent in a police car.

The video shown by police showed an officer with his weapon drawn over Bennett on the sidewalk. Police said Bennett was handcuffed, moved to a police vehicle and spoken to by another officer, who told Bennett that police were looking for an active shooter. After an exchange with police that lasted a few minutes, police took the handcuffs off Bennett and he was told he could leave. Bennett shook one of the officers' hands and walked away.

Lombardo said the internal investigation showed that the officers behaved "appropriately and professionally" and that "the incident was not about race." He said two other individuals were also detained in a similar manner, one black and one Hispanic.

Bennett told reporters earlier this month that the incident was "a traumatic experience for me and my family" and that he was considering filing a civil rights lawsuit.

He first gave his side of the incident on Twitter on Sept 6. He said officers pointed guns at him "for doing nothing more than simply being a black man in the wrong place at the wrong time" and ordered him to lie down on the ground.

Bennett wrote that one officer, with his gun drawn, warned him that he would "blow my f---ing head off" if he moved. Another officer jammed his knee into Bennett's back and handcuffed him, according to Bennett.

"The Officers' excessive use of force was unbearable," Bennett wrote. "I felt helpless as I lay there on the ground handcuffed facing the real-life threat of being killed. All I could think of was 'I'm going to die for no other reason than I am black and my skin color is somehow a threat.'"

Bennett wrote that he was placed in a police car before officers confirmed his identity, realized he was not a suspect and released him "without any legitimate justification for the Officers' abusive conduct."

"They apparently realized I was not a thug, common criminal or ordinary black man but Michael Bennett a famous professional football player," he wrote.

The video police aired Friday showed Bennett identifying himself as a Seahawks player after police allowed him to get out of the police car and told him he was not under arrest.

Bennett's attorney, John Burris in Oakland, California, said he wants to review the videos more closely. But he said he believed the clips shown verified Bennett's accounts.

"He was not acting improperly," Burris told The Associated Press. "He was not acting suspicious. He was not involved in any criminal activity.

"There's nothing to go on, no description, other than you see this big black man running," the attorney added. "He was running like everyone else, trying to get away."

Lombardo said the intent of Friday's news conference was not to "disparage" Bennett, acknowledging there are "two sides to every story."

"Mr. Bennett has a valid perspective as a person who experienced a reasonable suspicion stop for a felony crime," Lombardo said. "Those who experience such a stop, especially when they have not committed a crime, are not likely to feel good about it. But there is a reason why officers are trained to do what they do and what they did that night."

The officer who chased Bennett and handcuffed him didn't have his body camera on at the time, Lombardo said, and might face departmental discipline.

Otherwise, "I believe they acted appropriately and professionally," the sheriff said of the officers.

people who think the players are protesting the flag are probably clueless enough to think that rosa parks was protesting the Bus.

Then why did they do it during the National Anthem? Be honest. There will be a lot of backtracking starting now but any thinking person knows they were dissing the flag, America, Police, military Ect. I think they would be much happier working on a garbage truck in some 3rd world country where I'm sure they would be treated much better.

because they knew it would tick off people.

just. like. you.

and it worked. so even though you guys are crying about the protest, we have still had dialogue over the actual issues they were bringing awareness to. mission accomplished.

you can't claim you're a thinking person, and then turn turn around and claim that the players are dissing the military and such when they made it clear they aren't. That steelers OLineman, y'all supposedly hero, came out and explained as much. but you won't quote him cause it goes against your narrative.

so again, if you think the players are upset at the flag itself, then you're one of the ones who thought rosa parks had beef with the bus itself. or the boston tea party really hated that stupid british tea.

its hilarious that you guys will go out of your way to ignore the MANY vets who don't feel disrespected, and actually support their right to protest.

and we all know why. cause you have fake outrage.

seriously, it says a hell of a lot that racism is so ingrained in this country that when americans protest over racism, other americans think they are protesting America.

think about that. pretty pathetic.

Come on Swish, you didn't answer my question. If they crying about perceived racial injustice and not dissing America why do it during the National Anthem? No doubt the crybaby players and owners are backtracking now but its to late for me.

Also I'm not trying to kick anybody out of the country. I just said if things are so bad here maybe they should go where things are better.

How many different ways does this need to be explained to you?

This has been the most effective way to get guys like you talking about it. We have tried other methods. Y'all either whined about that too, or straight up didn't pay attention.

Now you're paying attention. Mission accomplished.

You understand that's a veiled attempt to tell people to leave, right? Are you saying that if there's problems in this country then people should just bounce instead of trying to solve issues or bring awareness to it?

You did all kinds of whining about liberals and Obama. Why didn't you leave and go somewhere better?

Oh, that's right. Because that logic only applies to black people.

Ok, you got a point. I did do a lot of bitching about Obama, Hillary,Pelosi Liz Warren and several other Wack job Democrats but I would never dis respect our Country,Military Cops Flag and not saying all Black people should leave. I think each of these players should take a celebrity with them.

Well, which is it Clem? If the VAST majority of cops are indeed honorable and trying their best to protect and serve, how can you turn around a make the claim of massive white oppression via the cops?

These players aren't protesting individual, questionable incidents. Hell, I don't think many of these players have really thought all that deeply about what it is they are protesting... except this past weekend when they turned out in record numbers to protest Trump, NOT to force awareness of social injustice on the fans.

I know my last posts on the topic were below standards of decorum, so I'll try to tighten up with this one.

Let's get past the fact that the players and ownership claim these protests are meant to bring unity, but have never really reconciled how refusing to take part in what is really one the largest displays of unity in our country being standing for the anthem actually brings about unity saywhat

But now what? Everyone who supports the players keeps saying they aren't meaning to be disrespectful, they just want to raise awareness, get a conversation started... so when is that going to happen?

Starting with Kap, the players have had the fan bases attention since last year.

Where are the op-eds to major newspapers penned by players saying "Now that we have your attention..." and subsequently lay out their case?

Where are the post-game interviews where one of these players puts aside the self promotion and instead uses that time to say "Now that I have your attention, let me spit some facts to you about social injustice"?

Where's the follow up? Is the fan base just supposed to go home and figure it out for themselves? Are they simply just supposed to nod their heads and blindly agree?

As I mentioned, standing for the National Anthem is one of the few, if only, acts of unity people across the nation come together on. Fans of all walks of life. Players of all walks of life. Fans wearing jerseys and supporting players that don't look like them.

Along comes a benched Kap who sticks a thumb in the eye of all that.

While I don't agree with the protesters premise, I honestly can say I don't blame them for wanting to go big or go home with what they chose to do. But when you do something like that, you better have an answer when the pissed audience turns to you and says "You better have a good reason for that".

And so far the answer has been what?

#becausesocialinjustice

Ok...? That's it? No how did we get from point A to point B?

Instead of explanation and dialogue, all we got was more protests... protests without any real explanation that became viewed more and more as disrespect.

And in all honesty Clem, can you really blame people for landing at that conclusion in the absence of an articulated reason to believe otherwise?

I guess maybe these guys have the same problem Trump has and that they can't get a competent communications director to work for them?

As I see it, there's really only 2 ways to go about this moving forward:

1) continue to explain away the negative reactions with the low hanging fruit: the fans are just racist, they don't "approve" of the form of protest, black people just need to stay in their place and not get uppity.. etc etc... continue to insult people like that and wonder why no one's listening

or

2) stop being so blinded by the righteousness of their own cause and realize that their chosen method is doing more harm than good to their desired goal.

I'd venture that the vast majority of these fans are NOT racists. If you want these people to listen and understand how you feel, then these players need to stop trying to shame and force people in to coming around. It's not working, and it never will.

When this many people attribute your actions to a motive that isn't what you intended, they aren't the problem. Hell, the message itself may not be the problem. It can simply be the packaging.

Be it a product or idea, ultimately you have to sell it.

My suggestion?

-Be able to reconcile and articulate any contradictions such as protesting a display of unity in order to promote unity
-Maybe not use multi-milionaires to be the poster child of oppression (again an obvious contradiction that needs explained)
-Understand that the target audience doesn't know your side of the story. MORE importantly understand that not knowing your side of the story likely doesn't impact their life in any meaningful way. Respect that fact, be patient with them, and be smart about how you try to get them in on the conversation.
-Make as much of an effort to understand your target group as you want them to understand you

I'm sure some will find this post controversial and take it out of context.. it's Dawgtalkers after all lol. but I really don't care about that because it will only go to be an example of what I'm talking about.

And you are right that my views are simply my own. To be honest with you, I'm not even sure of all the things BLM stand for and how they want changes to be made. I'm certainly not against a heavy police presence in high crime areas.

I do however promote that the people in every area of the nation be treated in the same manner. Maybe my expectations do night rise to the level of BLM, The justice Department and the ACLU. However, I have seen enough evidence myself to know that there are valid reasons why the black community doesn't feel that as a whole, they're being treated the same way the rest of the nation is.

Thanks.
You can't know how much I appreciate this.

Well, which is it Clem? If the VAST majority of cops are indeed honorable and trying their best to protect and serve, how can you turn around a make the claim of massive white oppression via the cops?
