MARSEILLE, France (Reuters) - Two women were stabbed to death and their assailant shot dead by soldiers in the southern port city of Marseille on Sunday in what police sources described as a "likely terrorist act".

Three police sources said the suspect had shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is greatest) as he carried out his attack at Marseille train station. No further details were immediately available.

Police cordoned off the area.

France has been in a state of emergency following a spate of attacks by Islamist militants over the last two years, including attacks in Paris in November 2015 which killed 130 people. Other countries, including Britain, Germany and Belgium, have also suffered attacks using knives, guns, explosives and vehicles.

A witness told Reuters she saw a man take out a knife from his sleeve and then stab a young girl and then a second woman, shouting what could have been "Allahu Akbar".

She added that she saw soldiers from France's Sentinelle force who were patrolling in the area arrive on the public square at the Gare Saint-Charles station.

"After the attack carried out next to Marseille Saint-Charles, I am immediately going to the site of the attack," French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said on Twitter.

French media reported that one of the women had her throat slit, while the second woman was stabbed in the stomach. Reuters could not confirm that information.

"We have generally avoided these sort of attacks in Marseille," regional president Renaud Muselier, who was speaking from the site of the attack, told BFM TV. "I think the security services responded extremely quickly. It's difficult to do more because when you see the distance between the two bodies and the attacker it's only 10 meters, so they intervened quickly."

Security forces have increasingly been targeted by militants who have carried out several knife attacks on them, most notably in June 2016, when a Frenchman who pledged allegiance to Islamic State stabbed a police commander to death outside his home and killed his partner.

third, it's really odd that these incidents keep happening in France and UK with way more frequency than anywhere else in Europe with a high number of muslims. my wife's mom tried to explain it to me better. it's confusing.

So two women in France were stabbed to death by a man yelling "Allahu Akbar".. an attack in Canada with a vehicle and a knife wounded half a dozen people by a Somalian refugee... but in the USA, our 64 year old white nut job kills 50 and wounds 200 with a series of automatic weapons..

When will we admit:
1. No race, nationality, or religion has cornered the market on nut jobs.
2. Yes, access (legal or illegal) to those kinds of weapons ARE a part of the problem

There are nut jobs everywhere. That is correct, yet some religions preach these kinds of things, to millions. Big difference.

I agree with both of your points, however you can expect people to argue against both points.

I think your first point is a good one, but the dynamics are so complex with that.

Well in my perspective, a lot of religions have violence within their beliefs and culture. The difference is how it's being taught, and where the places are in the world that allow radicals to multiply, and where the government has some sort of lid/control on religious nut cases.

Remember, Christians use to have a party burning witches. The only thing that stopped that was a secular government and the great of being jailed/executed if that crap continued. And even still we have religious based murders here.

In the Middle East, these crap governments just let that nonsense run rampant, because either they agree with it, or don't have the power to enforce the laws on the books, or the government itself is based on religious text.

I'm starting to wonder where this viewpoint of "one looks scary" come from. My daughters hate the sight of weapons no matter what they look like. My wife hated the weapons I had, didn't matter if it was a 9 or the AR 15.

Some religions don't.. some churches/mosques do.

I've seen and heard it 1000 times and I can have it in my own head right now.. all the points the "anti-gun" group will make, all the points the "pro-gun" group will make. Muslims killed 28 Christians on a bus in Egypt in 20 minutes back in May and we are immediately told to not judge all Muslims by an act like that... yet Christians are told to carry the baggage from their past collectively as a group forever...

The Players and the NFL have every right to kneel in protest while the rest of us have every right to boycott them.

They are nothing more than entertainers and when they decided to no longer be entertaining but upsetting, we started going away while their business dies. All within everyone's rights.

Imagine a world where every business had to declare their political positions before you decided to do business with them. Wouldn't that be fun.

People exercising their right to protest is not something a sitting President should take sides on unless the protest is aimed at him. Period.
