Woe. he was really young.

I pray for God's peace upon his family and friends.

He's not. Uh, wasn't.

He was someone that some of us older people liked to listen to.

He wrote a LOT of great songs. Personally I don't listen to his music but I like to give credit where credit is due.

Shocking that he's dead. R.I.P.

You never heard this song? I love that guitar riff:

True but he would have been just as factual saying Tom Petty wasn't a bassoonist or a violinist . It was a statement issued to get a response .

Tom Petty was one of my favorite artists. He was a rocker who would have rather played the blues. Did a lot of drugs and said he was hooked on heroin for a bit.

He didn't have the greatest voice, as it was very nasal......but, the guy could write songs and knew the importance of the back beat. Very rhythmic in my uneducated opinion.

Some of us hits were Last Dance w/Mary Jane [Swish, you would appreciate that one...LOL] Breakdown, Refugee, Stop Draggin' My Heart Around [w/Stevie Nicks,] Free Falling, American Girl, Don't Do Me Like That, I Need to Know, I Won't Back Down, and many, many more.

I love this version of "Breakdown." It's a live version and he throws a little Ray Charles in there.....which is absolutely awesome! It's a bad-ass song w/a great beat and is very sexy in an off-beat way.

Damn, Tom "Freaking" Petty is dead.

This one hurts! They all hurt, but this one hurts way more than most.

Actually I do turn Swish on to some crazy good music fairly frequently.
I bet somewhere in one of the mixes a Petty groove could be found. But he's no gansta rapper. At least that I'm aware...but we all have secret lives.

This getting old thing is so weird.

RIP Tom Petty.

Earlier this year I downloaded the song Refugee to my MP3. It was the first Tom Petty song I've ever owned.

I wasn't much of a Tom Petty fan during his most popular period. (~1980)

Geez what a year for Rock 'n Roll.

Some 1981 headliner bands:

The Rolling Stones (as popular as ever!)
REO Speedwagon
Foreigner
J Giels Band
Blue Oyster Cult
The Who
Ozzy
AC/DC
The Police
Eric Clapton
The Kinks
Journey
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

Swish,
Alot of people forget that those 70s rockers have not had too many hits lately. If you do not know about them, someone like you might not have heard them BEFORE they are dead. On the great things about growing up in NE Ohio was that you could hear all types of music.

I'm listening tonight as well. I have many other nights, but, hey.....

And swish, Tom Petty was not a bassoonist, or a violinist either.

Whats hes basically saying is, that because you are black, you could only possibly appreciate " gangsta rap" . It was some racist BS is what it was.

Stop Draggin' My Heart Around with Stevie Nicks is a badass song. He had many. One of my faves by him is Refugee.

You know a guy is good when George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne want you in their band.

We all know what you're inferring, arch: because he's young and black, Swish is into gangsta rap. Nice.

Yup, exactly. And when I was young and white and was into that I was...........wait, what was I? Swish has stated his music preference a fair amount, and gangster rap was one of them.

But, thanks to all the board psychologists for call me racist.

Tom Petty didn't sing opera either, so, if that gives me a label, go ahead and say it.

Yep.
Surprisingly, when you mention "The Traveling Wilburys" to people they ask, "WHO"?
