Tulsa, You also, you can agree on a small/limited restriction. Like I said to Arch, that is how gun control should be done. Small steps How do you force the criminals who are breaking the laws to follow your gun regulations? How many people on here smoke pot and it's illegal in most states but people do it. Should there be striker drug laws on Weed?

In Ga, I think it depends if your mental health treatment is voluntary or not. If it is court ordered, then you are done. There may or may not be a time limit on that I dont remember. That is how the Ohio law and also the Federal background checks are written, I believe. If you were ever committed you can't purchase a firearm. If you sought voluntary treatment, you can.

Vambo, You have to make it hard for the criminal to obtain a gun but not make the rules too hard for the every day person to obtain a gun.
So now that mental health has been discussed, what about those with domestic violence histories?? DO you limit them or not?

People who break the laws are not going to follow the guidelines for purchasing a gun or getting a CCw. They buy stolen weapons the by pass the system no matter how many laws, classes, checks you have in place will not catch them from getting a stolen weapon. They can't even stop weed smoking criminals.

True, Criminals get guns either by them being sold to them from states with little checks or by stolen guns. So that is why you make the guns that are bought and sold harder to criminals harder. Stolen guns are harder to trace unless they can be tracked at purchase.
So are you saying that since criminals will get guns, then those with histories of domestic violence should be able to get guns legally?? Because they will get guns anyway??

Vambo, what about those with domestic violence histories?? DO you limit them or not? A conviction for a number of Ohio misdemeanors can affect your ability to get or keep your a concealed carry license (concealed holder / CCW) in Ohio and/or your ability to own a firearm (R.C. 2923.125 & R.C. 2923.128). Felonies will also affect your ability to obtain a CCW or to own a firearm, but this post addresses exclusively misdemeanors that will affect your firearm rights. Offenses that Will Prevent You from Owning a Firearm and/or From Obtaining an Ohio CCW Marijuana Possession / Paraphernalia Conviction A marijuana possession or paraphernalia conviction in Ohio may prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW. A pending misdemeanor drug charge under R.C. 2925 that involves a drug of abuse (including marijuana) will prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW. A M1-M4 misdemeanor drug conviction under R.C. 2925 (including marijuana) will prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW. A minor misdemeanor marijuana conviction will not prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW. Domestic Violence (R.C. 2919.25) Federal law prohibits anyone with a domestic violence conviction from owning a firearm. Fourth degree misdemeanor (M4) domestic violence means causing a family/household member to believe that the offender will cause imminent physical harm. An M4 domestic violence charge is expungeable in Ohio. First degree misdemeanor (M1) domestic violence means knowingly causing or attempting to cause physical harm to a family harm or recklessly causing serious harm. An M1 domestic violence charge is not expungeable in Ohio. Note that if you were charged with domestic violence and it was reduced to a disorderly conduct plea involving some threat of harm or violence (e.g. R.C. 2917.11(A)(1)), you may still face a federal weapons disability even if the disorderly conduct charge was expunged. Misdemeanor Offense of Violence Being convicted of or charged with certain “offenses of violence” will prevent you from obtaining a CCW in Ohio. Being convicted of attempt or conspiracy to commit one of the below offenses of violence will also bar you from obtaining a CCW in Ohio. A misdemeanor offense of violence is any offense (other than traffic) committed purposely or knowingly involving physical harm to someone or a risk of serious physical harm to someone. If you are convicted of any offense of violence, you are barred from obtaining an Ohio CCW for 3 years following the conviction. Examples of offenses of violence that can prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW for 3 years include: Assault (R.C. 2903.13) (when victim is not a peace officer) Menacing (R.C. 2903.22) Child Endangerment (R.C. 2919.22(B)(1)) Misdemeanor (M1) child endangerment under (B)(1) is child abuse in which the defendant has never before been convicted of child and abuse and the child is not seriously injured. Conviction of misdemeanor child endangerment can prevent you from obtaining an Ohio CCW unless the charge is expunged. Negligent Assault (2903.14). If you have a pending negligent assault charge, you are barred from obtaining an Ohio CCW. A conviction, however, will not affect your ability to obtain a CCW. Resisting Arrest (R.C. 2903.13) If you have been convicted of resisting arrest, you are barred from obtaining an Ohio CWW for 10 years after the date of the conviction. Assault (R.C. 2903.13) Where Victim is a Peace Officer If you have been convicted of assault where the victim was a police officer or other peace officer, you are barred from obtaining an Ohio CWW for 10 years after the date of the conviction. If you have any pending misdemeanors or misdemeanor convictions in Columbus and are concerned about how the charge / conviction affects your firearm rights, talk to one of our Columbus attorneys. We can advise you on your options and whether you are eligible for expungement of the particular disqualifying misdemeanor convictions. We can be reached at (614) 361-2804. https://www.riddelllaw.com/ohio-misdemeanors-concealed-carry-ccw/Should cover your question.

About 3 million violent crimes occur each year in which victims perceive the offender to have been drinking and statistics related to alcohol use by violent offenders generally show that about half of all homicides and assaults are committed when the offender, victim, or both have been drinking. Among violent crimes, with the exception of robberies, the offender is far more likely to have been drinking than under the influence of other drugs. Alcohol is often a factor in violence where the attacker and the victim know each other. Nearly 500,000 incidents between intimates involve offenders who have been drinking; in addition, 118,000 incidents of family violence (excluding spouses) involve alcohol, as do 744,000 incidents among acquaintances. https://www.ncadd.org/about-addiction/alcohol-drugs-and-crimeThat’s definitely something to kneel over. Btw, would you support a bill to ban alcohol?

Arch, OK, in Ohio they cover that. I would have to look up other states. But what about someone who had mental issues but deemed by a shrink as OK. Do you grant them the license. And what about folks with domestic violence history?? Or on a terrorist watch list??
Answer please.
I can only answer as far as my understanding goes. I'm not a lawyer. In Ohio, if you have had mental issues - documented issues, you can't own a gun. Same with domestic violence history - documented, and prosecuted domestic violence. This is from my memory. But, as to your question "what about folks with domestic violence history, or on a terrorist watch". No, they can't go to the store and buy a gun. Can those on the terrorist watch or with a violent history (documented of course) get a gun at a gun show? Just wondering..

If you're buying a new gun from a dealer then you're going through an FBI check before purchase. If there's some guy walking around the show with a gun for sale. You can buy one from him without a check. Of course it doesn't have to be at a gun show, you can buy a gun from any individual selling one without a check.

I believe Lincoln once said opposing idealogies is what makes America great.
That being said, if you own a gun it is 22 times more likely that gun will be used on yourself, a family member, or friend. Not on an intruder, not on a red coat.
There are case studies across the globe when it comes to gun violence. It's pretty simple to me, more weapons equal more destruction. Is access to weapons justifiable, are more weapons really the answer? I know you want to fall back on the second amendment, times have changed.
Believe it or not, weapons lead to destruction. No need to fear the red coat, or our own government, we need to protect ourselves, from ourselves. How do you propose to restrict my right to a firearm for family protection? As you tell us times have changed...I agree that there are more and varied dangers out there. Let us assume that you are talking about handguns because rifles and shotguns are used to kill people half as often as stabbing incidents in America. If times have changed how do you know that no govt overreach will occur that calls for self protection from rogue officials? Bad cops, fake FBI posers? In America we do fall back on the Bill of Rights...and always will.

The dumbest argument I constantly come across is people saying they need an AR15 to defend their home. It’s a load of crap for sure.
Its not, they are fun to shoot. And unless you mod one, there is not much difference from any other rifle. Like I have said before, its not the rifle its the person. I don't own one, but have shot them. Wasn't a fan myself. The 2nd amendment shall not be infringed, but accessories are not weapons, and as such are not under protection of the 2nd amendment. So banning stocks and other accessories that are intended to circumvene the ban on full auto weapons should be restricted. Personally, I agree, but the argument is SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. Some believe this goes for any type of attachment or mod. I disagree, just pointing out the other argument. I understand hand guns and CCW and I support that, however these idiots who like to wave their rights in people’s faces by walking around in Walmart and chipotle with their rifles shouldn’t be allowed. That crap is stupid, it doesn’t keep people safe, and it only makes the public fearful of these “law abiding citizens”. Most states allow open carry without a permit. Meaning you can open carry or "walk around with it in your face". I assume you are referring to the guys with AR strapped to their back. But if I carry with my pistol out I actually don't need to have a permit for that. To carry concealed (in the states around me) you need a permit. If a company post they do not want weapons in their store, they have that right to post that, and as a CCW holder, I must obey their request and not carry into their business. If the store allows it, its not up to you, you don't own walmart or wherever, you can shop somewhere else that does have a no weapon policy. Another policy I would support is taking away irresponsible citizens guns. For example, you get drunk and start shooting in the air like a damn idiot? Congrats, you just lost your right. Well that would be a felony, and if you have a felony you are not permitted to own a firearm. So that already is in place. You aim at someone, but end up hitting an innocent bystander because of your inability to identify your target, congrats, no guns for you. That would constitute as involuntary manslaughter I would think, thus resulting in a felony charge - thus limiting your right to purchase a gun. Your kid got your gun and shot themselves or others, accidentally or not? Congrats, your irresponsibility and negligence just lost your right to own guns. This is easier said then done. What if the gun was locked in a safe? You were a responsible owner and had it secured? I get your point, but there are always gray areas Another policy I would support if they actually fixed it is the terrorist watch list. This was a big issue when Obama was in office, and a big campaign talking point. Have you seen those list? A lot of people have the same name, and would be unjustly on it. I think something needs done, as I agree with you are truly being watched for terror, then you shouldn't be able to buy a gun. But I also think it would need to improved (the system) before this could happen. However, gun restrictions I don’t support for the most part would be a mental health check. Unless there hard evidence about the state of someone’s mental health, that policy can be severely abused by the government, and a way to essentially make a blanket ban on anybody for any trash reason. I completely agree with you. This is the biggest issue the left says and the right fights in my mind. I am torn, because it makes sense on paper, but we all know what would really happen. What if someone had a case of depression at 12 years old and was put on meds for it, then 10 years later they go to purchase a gun and cant because of this with no other issues mentally since then? Too many gray areas again.

Just so you know, many here are ok when govt overreach occurs by rogue officials, bad cops, and fake FBI posers when African American's exercise their constitutional rights by having a peaceful protest every Sunday. Why would it or should it be any different with the second ammendment In America we do fall back on the Bill of Rights...and always will. Always for some. Never for others.

Gun control, Dawgtalkers edition:
Earlier OldColdDawg made a thread that had a video of a U.S. Senate hopeful from Tennessee which, among other things, discussed how she was a proud gun owner who had her concealed carry permit. She said she often carried a gun in her purse.
Any thoughts on this?
I'll admit that I have not thought a great deal about the unique CCW issues that females face. However, I am skeptical of purse carry as one's gun control figures to be very poor. The purse could be snatched or otherwise lost. I would think gun control would be much better on the hip or in a pocket. However, from the little I know about women's fashion, pockets tend to be small or nonexistent, so that's kind of out.

women's pursues get snatched up around the world all the time. i wonder if it's easily top 3-5 in petty thefts.
i also wonder how good of a shot she actually is. Who knows. I do think it's wise to practice and be proficient with with what you carry, for those who have chosen to take that step. That said, there's a huge variation in skill out there.

all i know is people who like to post pictures and videos of how much they love their guns and 2nd amendment better be a damn good shot once crap hits the fan, and better practice basic gun safety and storage.
that one pro gun activist who ended up getting shot by her own 4 year old son is the kind of stuff i talk about. bragging on social media about how much you love your guns and such, then end up being popped cause of your stupidity?
that's exactly the kind of crap im talking about.

That's pretty neat. I do remember the bra holster idea from one of the old threads, probably the concealed carry thread.

Many people need to do a better job with gun safety. It frustrates me as well. When asked about how a person goes about getting a CCW, my first reply is take a gun safety class before you even think about handling a gun. Learn bout the weapon you wish to own. Ammo is important where rounds that fire well in a revolver may not work in a semi-auto and could jam your weapon. Would like to add practice often, ask for help people at the range are always willing to give pointer.
