Ravens reach agreement with first-round draft pick

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens reached agreements with first-round offensive guard Ben Grubbs and fourth-round fullback Le'Ron McClain on Friday.

The deals ensure that all eight draft picks will be under contract when players report to training camp Sunday in Westminster.

"It's good to have each of our draft choices finished prior to the start of Brian (Billick)'s team meeting on Sunday," general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

Grubbs agreed to a five-year contract with a maximum value of $11 million if he reaches every incentive clause. His deal included $5.2 million in guaranteed money, the team said.

Grubbs, the 29th overall pick from Auburn, is slated to compete with Chris Chester for the starting right guard job.

He will be the first Ravens first-round draft pick to report on time since tight end Todd Heap in 2001.

McClain agreed to a three-year contract with minimum base salaries of $285,000 in 2007, $370,000 in 2008 and $460,000 in 2009. The former Alabama standout is competing with veteran Justin Green for the starting fullback job.

Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr., Miami's first-round pick and the ninth pick overall, has agreed to terms with the Dolphins.

Financial terms were not immediately available.


Ginn, a receiver and kick returner, reached the agreement after missing five practices for rookies. The deal means the Dolphins will have all 87 players on their roster under contract when the full squad begins training camp Saturday.


Ginn scored 26 touchdowns at Ohio State, including a Big Ten-record six returning punts. He made 59 catches for 781 yards and nine scores as a junior last year, and he was the second receiver drafted, behind Calvin Johnson, who went to the Detroit Lions with the No. 2 pick.


But fans jeered new Dolphins coach Cam Cameron at the team's draft party in April for bypassing Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn in the first round and picking Ginn instead with the ninth choice.


Ginn was among the fastest players in the draft, but has been criticized for running poor routes, dropping too many passes and struggling to get off the line, and there have also been doubts about his health. He sprained his left foot during an end zone celebration after returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown at the BCS national championship game Jan. 8.

A college safety, Griffin will play cornerback in Tennessee. Ideally, he will start at left corner with Nick Harper on the right, allowing newly acquired Kelly Herndon and Cortland Finnegan to focus on nickel and dime work.

Everything is falling in place...Quinn's going to get maybe $6 million or so guaranteed.

Looking at the figures, no wonder he hasn't signed if your figures are used.....that sounds about 1-1.5 short.

Around 6, high 6...something like that. I guess it'll probably be more like high six's.

Basically it's going to come down to Condon to get creative, because the money just is not going to get thrown at Quinn. His best bet is to get some creative opt out/bonus clauses...like if Quinn takes 75% of the snaps over the first three years of the deal, having an automatic buyout or roster bonus. Stuff like that.

Im Thinking Between 9-11 Million Gaurenteed For Quinn When All Is Said and Done.

For him to get over a 20% increase over the pick before him will automatically make Savage the most hated GM in the NFL.

Its Still a Real Possibility, No Matter Who "Will Hate" Savage.

I say give him $9m guaranteed and build in incentives.

The contract could be for $150 million for all I care (exaggeration) if the incentives are hard enough to reach and practically guarantee success for the Browns.

Hell, one of the incentives could be "win the starting job in training camp." Should give him the incentive to get in on time.

EDIT: Although that could create all sorts of fiascos, like the coaching staff not declaring him starter purposely to save $$$.

Dolphins reach deal with Ginn

Speedy rookie Ted Ginn Jr. makes the Miami Dolphins faster even when it comes to contract negotiations.

Miami's first-round draft pick agreed to terms Friday on a five-year deal worth more than $13 million, meaning the team will have all 87 players signed when the full squad begins training camp today.

It's great to be here on time," said Ginn, a receiver and returner from Ohio State taken ninth in the draft. "We both had the same goal - to come in and be on time and be ready to start rolling. It all worked out fine."

Ginn's father, Ted Ginn Sr., said he was glad his son reached an agreement before the first full-squad practice.

"I thought it was important," said Ginn Sr., Glenville High's football coach. "He's got a job to do. I'm just glad it's over and he can take care of business."

Ginn scored 26 touchdowns at Ohio State, including a Big Ten-record six returning punts. He made 59 catches for 781 yards and nine scores as a junior last year.

49ers sign top pick Willis to first NFL contract

The San Francisco 49ers have signed middle linebacker Patrick Willis of Mississippi, the earlier of the team's two choices in the first round of the draft, to his first NFL contract. San Francisco last week signed Central Michigan offensive tackle Joe Staley, its other pick in the first round.

Willis, 22, was the 11th overall player selected in the draft. His contract is for five years, with a maximum value of $16.7 million and total guarantees of $12 million.

Regarded as the top linebacker prospect in this year's draft class, Willis figures to play quickly in the San Francisco 3-4 alignment, and to provide the 49ers a tough playmaker in the interior of the defense. A tackling machine, Willis twice led the SEC in total stops, but his quickness and range make him more than just a run-stuffer.

At the combine, Willis enhanced his already soaring stock by posting a 4.51-second time in the 40-yard dash. He also flashed his overall athleticism with an effort of 39 inches in the vertical jump, and solid times in change-of-direction drills.

Known for his innate football instincts, Willis was also a two-time academic all-conference selection. And his toughness was manifested in 2005 when he played the entire season with a cast on his right hand.

In 45 games at Ole Miss, including 22 starts, Willis had 355 tackles, 33 tackles for losses, 11 sacks, one interception, 12 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three recoveries.

He's not going to hold out until next season guys. I don't understand the majority of Browns fans. You guys are acting like everyone else has signed and Brady's the only one left. It's the second day of camp. Relax a little. The season doesn't start next week. There's plenty of time for him to sign and he will.

Brady Quinn will be signed. We will greatly overpay him before we let him re enter the draft.

Thank god we get football next week even if its the stoolers.

Vikings agree to five-year deal with top pick Peterson

Tailback Adrian Peterson ended his two-day absence from the Minnesota Vikings' training camp on Sunday afternoon, reaching agreement on a five-year contract with a maximum value of $40.5 million and including $17 million in guarantees.


Expected to share the load in the Minnesota backfield, where he will split time with veteran Chester Taylor, who rushed for 1,214 yards in 2006, Peterson was the seventh overall player selected in the draft. While there were some concerns about his durability, and specifically about a fractured left collarbone that sidelined him for seven games last season, the Vikings felt he was too good to pass on.


Minnesota did extensive background work on Peterson's collarbone injury and determined that he would be able to rehabilitate without surgery, which turned out to be the case. The gamble on Peterson, one of the most celebrated high school backs in the past decade when he decided to enroll at Oklahoma, could pay off handsomely for coach Brad Childress.


With a first-year starter at quarterback, in Tarvaris Jackson, the Vikings are likely to rely heavily on the run in 2007, and the combination of Taylor and Peterson should provide them a very solid tandem.


Peterson, 22, carried 747 times for 4,045 yards and 41 touchdowns for the Sooners, and had 24 catches for 198 yards and one score. He rushed for 1,000 or more yards in each of his three college seasons, but his best performance came as a freshman in 2004, when he had 1,925 yards despite starting only eight games.


Blessed with a thick upper body, Peterson possesses a rare combination of size (6-feet-1½, 217 pounds), speed and strength. He was clocked at a blistering 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine, and showed superb athleticism with a 38½-inch vertical jump and a long jump of 10-feet, 3-inches.


Most of the concerns about Peterson revolve around his upright running style, which means he absorbs a lot of hits, and could be susceptible to injury.


In 2004, he suffered a left shoulder injury that subsequently required surgery the following spring. He had right thigh and ankle injuries which slowed him in 2005, then the fractured collarbone last season.

the raiders are idiots-- could have had their guy signed the night before the draft..........
