Watson is a winner. I know what I saw of him in college, and it was very impressive. He handled Alabama twice. Not taking Watson is the biggest mistake the FO has made.

Oh I'm dealing with it. I'm just clear in what I see. And yes, we wait around and draft leftovers that other teams don't deem worthy of consideration of being a franchise QB. We pay the Jon Bon Jovi role. Living on a prayer. And it shows on game day.

Hey, I don't make the news. I just report it.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Hooker was my pick as well. Peppers doesn't do much with the high motor. This stupid deep set is killing us. Throw in front of him. Taylor doesn't hit anybody off the line. I saw Peppers jogging in at the end of the play multiple times, and he looked casual about getting there. This secondary needs to act interested. Williams has dumbed this group down in secondary IMO. Hit them on the line.

The Browns' plan isn't working, the rift is real, and Jimmy Haslam still needs help to save it: Mary Kay Cabot

Updated on October 17, 2017 at 5:32 PM Posted on October 17, 2017 at 5:16 PM

By Mary Kay Cabot, cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Jimmy Haslam's plan for the Browns isn't working, the discord between the coaching staff and top brass is real, and he still needs an experienced talent evaluator to come in and help save it.

I wrote it last December and I'm repeating it here: A personnel trio devoid of anyone who's ever assembled a winning football team isn't going to fly.

The Browns have already whiffed on two potential star quarterbacks in Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson, and are in jeopardy of blowing it again in the QB-rich 2018 draft if they don't find someone with a track record for picking players.

The current trio of Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown, Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta and Vice President of Player Personnel Andrew Berry was deficient from the start, and now they're 1-21 in their second season of a rebuild that was never necessary in the first place.

Perennial contenders don't have to "take it down to the studs'' and trade away from franchise quarterbacks to build a roster. They find players in the draft, free agency, on the street and other teams' rosters. They keep their own good players such as center Alex Mack, Mitchell Schwartz and receiver Taylor Gabriel.

The nine players they've drafted so far from the Wentz trade are mostly "just guys'' who didn't need to come at the expense of a franchise quarterback.

There's no way the Browns should be 1-21 after having 24 draft picks in the last two seasons and more cap space than they know what to do with. They never expected to go 1-15 last season, and they certainly never envisioned 0-6 this year.

But they're 1-21 -- and losing fans in droves -- because the roster isn't good enough to win. What's more, they haven't even been competitive in two of their last three games.

The argument for building up the roster before drafting the franchise QB is flawed. We've been hearing that for years, including from former general manager Ray Farmer, and yet the supporting cast is still poor -- including a receiving corps that could've been top-notch right now with a couple of smart moves.

No, this is how it's done:

You take the franchise quarterback when he's staring you in the face, and worry about the details later.

And if this complete two-year teardown was the plan all along, they never let Hue Jackson in on it. He came in with a promise to win right away, and refused to call it a rebuild, only a "retool."

Related: Doug Lesmerises writes that the plan is working well

If DeShone Kizer doesn't prove to be the franchise quarterback Jackson still believes he can be, the best the Browns can hope for is that a quarterback such as a USC's Sam Darnold or UCLA's Josh Rosen can come in next year and start to dig them out of this hole. But there's no guarantee they'll even be as good Wentz or Watson.

Even if a Darnold or Rosen can start winning in 2019, was it worth two years of record-setting losses that alienated fans, wasted people's money -- and wouldn't have happened if they had taken a Wentz, a Watson, or acquired a quality veteran?

Furthermore, the blown picks and missed opportunities have created so much discord between the front office and coaching staff that they can't co-exist beyond this season in their current state.

Haslam -- who's 15-55 since officially taking over as owner in 2013 and 4-39 since a 7-4 start in 2014 -- will have no choice but to fix it.

Why the executive team is lacking

Haslam's first mistake was putting Brown in charge of all roster decisions when that's not his area of expertise. He's a lawyer and salary-cap expert who came from a Jaguars team that didn't have a winning season in his final five years there.
He's more team president material than final-say GM.

If Brown were to have control of the roster, he needed an accomplished evaluator by his side. Instead, Haslam brought in DePodesta from the Mets. If DePodesta wanted to break into football, so be it. But Haslam put a baseball guy in charge of his football team.

DePodesta was still coming up the steep learning curve when the Browns made the egregious error of passing on Wentz last year. To make matters worse, he told ESPN Cleveland that the Browns didn't think Wentz would be a top-20 quarterback, effectively announcing that their ability to evaluate the position is suspect.

The Browns did hire their "football guy" in Berry, but he was a rising 28-year-old talent and former Colts pro scouting coordinator who was nowhere near ready to be a team's leading football authority.

Haslam should've learned from making Farmer the GM way too soon that it's too big a job for a rookie, unless he's paired with a star exec such as an Ozzie Newsome.

The other major flaw on the executive team was that Haslam put himself in charge of overseeing it, a job he's not qualified for.

Had he hired a good overseer, preferably one with Super Bowl experience, he may have been able to head off the rift.

A deep divide

The lack of an experienced top personnel exec has created a power vacuum over the roster, including the draft.

When the coaches know more about football talent than the top personnel execs, that's a problem.

When the two sides clash, there's no one qualified to break the tie.

All anyone had to do was read Michael Silver's post-draft piece on NFL.com to know that the powers-that-be weren't on the same page on draft day, during which Silver was embedded at the Browns' facility.

The biggest battle was over the No. 1 pick. The coaches fought for and got Myles Garrett, while at least some in the front office really wanted Mitch Trubisky.

The Browns' top three quarterbacks were Trubisky, Patrick Mahomes and Watson, likely in that order. If the Chiefs hadn't leapfrogged them and taken Mahomes at No. 10, the Browns may have taken him at No. 12.

As for Watson, the Browns apparently didn't have him high enough on their board to take him at 12, even though they really liked him. In fact, according, to Silver's piece, Jackson wanted Ohio State safety Malik Hooker there.

Regardless, passing on Watson could prove to be another colossal blunder. Watson has already made history as the first rookie QB in the Super Bowl era to throw at least three touchdown passes in three consecutive games, and the Texans are ecstatic about their QB.

Granted, Watson must stand the test of time, but he's currently making the Browns look bad. If he keeps winning, the value of the Browns' extra 2018 first-round pick from that trade will plummet.

A series of unfortunate events

But Wentz and Watson aren't the only mistakes or points of contention inside the building.

The coaching staff and front office are also at odds over the lack of receivers and other key positions. Both Kizer, who will likely start again Sunday, and Kevin Hogan have found out the hard way that it's tough to win a game with few or no quality targets.

Free-agent pickup Kenny Britt (groin) is on the mend and in the doghouse, but might have to play this week for lack of anyone better. In the past two seasons, the Browns have blown chances to keep or acquire Terrelle Pryor, Taylor Gabriel, Jeremy Maclin, Marvin Jones and more.

Instead, they banked on their 2016 draft picks such as injury-prone Corey Coleman, Ricardo Louis and Rashard Louis stepping it up, and they haven't.

As for the quarterback position, in addition to missing on Wentz and Watson, the Browns never made a serious run at Jimmy Garoppolo, or A.J. McCarron, and they cut Josh McCown, who's starting for the Jets. The only experienced QB they acquired was Brock Osweiler, whom they're paying $16 million this year to play for the Broncos.

A good veteran could've won this year or at least kept the seat warm for Kizer. Instead, Jackson went into the season with three young QBs who had never won a game as a starter. While the front office still likes Cody Kessler, Jackson has no plans to play him.

Sources says the coaches were also miffed that the Browns traded linebacker Demario Davis back to the Jets, where he's No. 3 in the NFL in tackles; and cut cornerback Joe Haden, who's now winning with the Steelers.

As for the Browns' 14 draft picks in 2016, about five are starting, but for a team that can't win a game. Others were unnecessary. If the Browns had kept right tackle Mitchell Schwartz, they wouldn't have had to spend a third-round pick on Shon Coleman.

Of the nine players the Browns have drafted so far from the Wentz trade and its spinoffs, none is yet making it worthwhile: Corey Coleman, Shon Coleman, Kessler, Louis, safety Derrick Kindred, receiver Jordan Payton (out of football), offensive lineman Spencer Drango, Jabrill Peppers and Kizer.

Of the Browns' 10 picks in 2017, Garrett looks like a stud, and four others are showing promise: first-rounders Jabrill Peppers and David Njoku; Kizer; and defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi. But the final grade won't be in for a few years.

They have another 13 picks in the QB-rich 2018 draft, including two first-rounders and three in the second, but they can't load up the roster again with another bunch of rookies. It's already the youngest team in the league -- missing that core middle tier -- and suffering because of it.

Profootballtalk.com reported Sunday that the Browns have begun reaching out to front-office candidates, a report the Browns say is "false and erroneous."

One logical choice would be Haslam's good friend Peyton Manning, whom WKYC-TV reported was in Cleveland last week, but for unknown reasons. Sources tell cleveland.com it had nothing to do with a Browns job.

Even if Haslam could lure Manning, he'd have to surround himself with experienced personnel execs and he'd likely need a piece of the team to even consider it.

Whether it's Manning or someone else, Haslam still needs the right person to step in and help salvage this team.

MKC with another stale insight and a barrage of mud. We have problems, we know 'em because we made 'em, but this is The Voice of the Browns? Any good stories? Just worn out with herblame-fixing, name dropping, and her finger pointing. She may be 100% right, and I resent as a fan. Pass the keyboard to someone will write about players; the negative crap, like the recent rehash of the draft and how we made so many teams better from last year took a lot of thunder from Hogan starting. Hardly mentioned; too much mud to be thrown. Not suggesting blind homerism. Do your job to find some different story angles. These will not involve the national anthem in any capacity. JMHO

When you haven't won a game, its easy to write on negativity because the positives are few and far between. If its truth, its truth. But did she call Peppers good (showing promise) or am I interpreting that wrongly?

She's confusing to read. The first paragraph talks of the players gained from passing on Wentz (Peppers one of them) are making the trade not worthwhile. In the second she says that Peppers (along with Kizer) is showing promise, of which I don't see because he is playing out of position.

Just pointing out that MK contradicts herself in her attempt to write on the topic of missed opportunity.

I have a completely different take, bro.

I have never, ever seen Mary Kay go off on the franchise like she just did. Not even close.

I think her indictments on the FO and Haslan have a lot of merit.

You tell me what Sashi ever accomplished to get to be in charge of personnel decisions? That is just one example.

I don't know..............I think this entire thing is setting up to make Hue the fall guy and she spoke up against that.

I'll take Hue over Sashi 8 days a week!!!

I applaud Mary Kay for finally telling it the way it is.

I put this in the game day thread but it belongs here.

Every year it shocks and bewilders me how foolish people can be.

They say the Browns will win 2-3-4-5 games than are shocked, even pissed when the Browns live up to their predictions.

I was pissed, pissed enough not to come to this board for a good long while over what I saw this crew do, and once again the very same people who blessed the blow up are now warming up their pitch forks and getting the tar and feathers ready.

Now don't get me wrong Farmer was crap. I wanted him gone but I hated the term rebuild, you never ever rebuild, you build, you keep the talent you have and you build.

But oh no we couldn't have that we had to get rid of all the players because they were losers or they contributed to losing.

So down to the studs we go. I had a poster ask me why I was upset because they cut Haden. I told him it means they are stacking the deck to lose. And I will tell you all the same again, because this group and I assume with the blessing of Haslim was making damned sure we didn't win games because of our defense.

This season was and is about Kizer, we weren't going to win unless Kizer did the improbable. Letting Haden go was insurance to be sure the defense didn't win a game. That plan is working, and like it or not YOU ALL signed up for this so don't you dare not support it now.

We let talent go for this rebuild you all desperately wanted, so now when its time to take the medicine that comes with it, its oh no I didn't know it would be this bad well it is, so suck it up.

This plan will work it requires something you all have never been willing to give support and time.

Again I hated it because we had the beginnings of a good football team, but you all wanted begged for it to be blown sky high so stop with the BS and let it play out.

It's going to take another year, but it is better it just doesn't look that way today. We still have some holes to fill, and if you didn't know that then your challenged.

Coaches like vet players because they don't make rookie mistakes, mistakes that cost games. We have some growing to do and we have some holes that remain, mainly at QB, so suck it up. support and encourage what you signed up for and begged to get.

Sick of the fans and the press feeding the process that drags us right back down every single time. This is the time we see it thru and this season regardless of record I want to see this process thru, and I damned well expect that just one time the fans stick it out like they swore in many instances they would.

Ican't and/or wont. Shashi has never proven anything yet. I am not jumping all over his jock, and I am also not burning it with his junk still in it.

Hue also deserves a lot more time before he is judged. His short comings are showing more than Shashi's right now BUT it's not fair critisizm.

J/C..

I hear the big show is available [/sarc]

If we don't give these coaches and FO at least 1 more year NO ONE will ever come here unless they are desperate. I'm not against tweaks to personnel (additions no firing) and I'm hating the product on the field but we set out on a path and it needs to be followed. 5 picks in the first 2 rounds - we better get a QB somehow.

All those calling Watson our missed messiah - I'm more upset we passed on Hooker or any of the other good safeties who were there in round 2. Still, inclined to give Peppers time and an offseason.

Although he’d of handled being thrown out there by Hue WAY TO EARLY a lot better than CK or Kizer ... it was one thing to throw Kizer out there in game 1 (and that was STUPID ENOUGH .. ) ... it’ll be an entirely different LEVEL OF STUPIDITY if he throws him out there again ...

Been mine for years, not only now.

Coaches are not sacred cows, or should not be. We seem to be making bad decisions about people, plays, schemes, and retention that result in the issues we have to solve well above above and beyond winning our first single game. Are these coaches when they see fails week-to-week eliminating many of them or changing for the next? I do not see it at all; the junk is there from week to week, and it is like written in stone that I will prove it to you. That might be the heart of the issue, or certainly part of it: We are as FO, HC/DC making losing decisions and bending over stubbornly and backwards to frantically "prove" our judgment which we can't seem to pan any gold from. Our QB's, our deep safety, refusal to run enough, the whole pass route selection, refusal to screen much, almost total avoidance of middle routes/digs/crossing (scoring and ball movers), so we stare down three yard junk passes, it goes on this list does. We need our own Wizard of Oz to talk who is taken AND how we use them. Peppers has been a bust IMO. We draft a skill set and do not use it. Hue is not putting our folks into the best position to succeed.

The following point was made in a recent article concerning the Wentz trade.

I agree that it is doubtful that he would have had the same production here, but let's not kid ourselves......he had hardly anything to work with last year on offense.

And it still comes down to the bottom line. Should we have taken him or not. If we had taken him, do you think we would still need a qb? I don't.

Also, I agree that all people have flaws. My head is not even close to being up my ass. In fact, I can clearly see when the mob is harping on the flaws of one man and ignoring the flaws of others.

I’m not sure what u mean by that ... i thought Wentz played well for a rookie ... he had accuracy issues but that was because of his elbow placement at the start of his delivery ... one of the reasons i think he can be special is he went out and fixed that in the offseason .. it was a minor tweak but he fixed it none the less ... kids intelligent with a very good skill set and he works hard .. thats a great combo ..

And it still comes down to the bottom line. Should we have taken him or not. If we had taken him, do you think we would still need a qb? I don't.

Of course now I think we should have taken him .. i think his floor is above average, he hs a shot to be real real special .... hindsight’s 20/20 .... i didn’t know who he was before the draft .. i didn’t watch much college football that year ...

Kids got a shot to be real special .. i’d LOVE to have him ...

I said that day ... no matter how it turns out I’ll NEVER BASH the FO or Hue for the pick cause what they did made sense ...

Also, I agree that all people have flaws. My head is not even close to being up my ass.

I said up Hues ass, not yours ... thumbsup

In fact, I can clearly see when the mob is harping on the flaws of one man and ignoring the flaws of others.

Hmmm ... thanks for clearing that up ... i was confused as to where u stood on that ... rofl ..

I was referring to Philly not having a very good supporting cast on offense last year. You--and others--have mentioned that he would not have played well in Cleveland due to the supporting cast.

I am saying that he didn't have much in Philly and he still played pretty good.

I will say that I did not want the Browns to draft Wentz w/the second overall pick. I questioned his processing skills and the competition he played against. I said he should go in the mid-first round. I was wrong. I can admit that. Then again, I am not drawing the salary or have the resources that your boys in the FO have.

The scenario that a QB wouldn't have as good of stats had he been drafted here is true. But you would have either addressed your QB problem or you wouldn't have. Had we drafted Wentz, the QB issue would be settled.

I also find it funny when people say things like we on a message board didn't see them as a franchise QB so they won't blame the FO. They get paid seven figure salaries to figure this out. They're not a bunch of Monday morning QB's on a damned message board. Their job is to figure it out.

And no matter what anyone says, when you're in the position that a franchise QB is staring you in the face and you don't pick him as your draft choice? You're wrong and nothing else "makes sense".

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Here's my crazy prediction of the day/week/month/etc.:

Marvin Lewis will leave the Bengals head coaching job and come here in a GM role, with Hue Jackson remaining as Head Coach of the Browns in 2018. (Not saying I'd endorse it or like it; just saying).

I agree! More mediocrity is NOT what this team needs!

Dear Lord, no. Might as well start recruiting from the prison system.

I'd say the more likely scenario is that Lewis ends up in an executive role for the Bengals with Hue Jackson as the head coach.

Conflicting reports on the nature of Peyton Manning's visit

Peyton Manning was reportedly in Cleveland last week.

The nature of the visit is unknown. There have been conflicting reports on whether or not he met with the Cleveland Browns.

"One logical choice would be Haslam's good friend Peyton Manning, whom WKYC-TV reported was in Cleveland last week, but for unknown reasons. Sources tell cleveland.com it had nothing to do with a Browns job," via Cleveland.com.

"Even if Haslam could lure Manning, he'd have to surround himself with experienced personnel execs and he'd likely need a piece of the team to even consider it."

Mike Trivisonno offered a completely different view of the situation.

"Peyton Manning was here to talk with the Cleveland Browns," Trivisonno said.

He went a step further as to say Manning had made a decision to join the franchise.

"What I am telling you is the truth...Peyton Manning is coming to Cleveland to run the Cleveland Browns. [Executive Vice President of Football Operations] Sashi Brown will stay as Vice President.

Right now, Peyton Manning has met with the Cleveland Browns. Peyton Manning was in Cleveland and Peyton Manning is deciding whether he wants to put 100-percent time and effort into running the Cleveland Browns...The decision right now is in Peyton Manning's hand. I personally don't think that Peyton Manning would have come to Cleveland if there was not something inside of him saying 'you know what, I'm going to take this job.' Peyton Manning could be your next President of the Cleveland Browns."

After listening to Trivisonno explaining the situation on the radio, Browns247 is more under the impression that he is speculating rather than presenting information relayed from a reliable source.

It is hard to understand why Manning would be in Cleveland if it were not football related, however.

I wouldn't object to Manning coming in and getting involved with FO related matters alongside the current FO - I think they could probably learn a lot from each other. I would also insist on an OC for Hue if I could - I don't doubt his offensive mind, but he needs to trust someone to run a gameplan and simply chip in on amendments on gameday. I so want him to succeed. Sick of failure at our key positions, playing and non.

IF Manning would by chance come here I'm betting there's ZERO chance any of those FO guys (at least the top few) stay in their current roles. MAYBE Sushi does some cap work.
