How is everyone else fairing?

Leafs are 5-1, best Capitals tonight on the road. Austin Matthews is already one of the best players in the league and he just turned 20. Toronto has a lot of young talent and arguably the best coach in hockey.

It's early but I feel good, as a long-suffering Leafs fan (even longer than I've rooted for the Browns, by about 15 years)

Glad you started this thread, btw, I'd been thinking about it.

Vegas has a team. They might be 5-1 after tonight (up 2 goals in the 3rd). I’d like to go see a game there but it might be just as expensive as a game here in Chicago.

Red Wings/Leafs tonight! I haven't been this excited for an early season game in a long time. I've only caught one Detroit game so far this year, but they handed LV their only loss and looked pretty good doing it. Tatar actually got into and won a fight, lol. We've got tickets for a game in the new arena in November.

They are fun to watch. Lots of speed, gonna be a real tough team to take down come April-May (maybe even June). Making the playoffs last year was so huge for them. I think you can credit this nice start to getting a taste of the post-season last year.

Matthews is ridiculous, the NHL right now with all this young talent is in such a great spot. I have said it a million times in these threads, but it's so true. Matthews, McDavid, Eichel, Larkin, Ekblad, etc.. and those are just the under 21 guys. If you stretch out the range to the under 25 group, there is a mammoth list of really good players.

The game is definitely growing. I've seen it during my time in Chicago. There is a lot more youth hockey going on. The Blackhawks becoming a thing again played huge into that.

The regular season is still kinda meh, but one thing that could maybe spike some interest is scoring races. There are quite a few volume scorers in the league now.

To me, that's the thing the league needs to move the needle further. Goaltending and defense are great viewing in the playoffs, but they won't bring new feet under the tent. The league would benefit having a few guys scoring 75-90 goals. It would be something to see and track throughout the season.

I don't know how best to increase scoring, but it would grow the game.

Hockey has to be careful, they have a concussion problem like the NFL (not as bad though). They need to market the speed, scoring and imagination of the game. Nobody wants to see goons, big hits and fighting anymore. Well, at least not from anyone younger than 50.

The NHL Hartford Whalers have been nonexistent for 20 years.

The only NHL team I ever liked. (I did get to go to an AHL Cleveland Barons game ~ 1969)

The Whalers were stolen by North Carolina and became the Hurricanes in 1997.

Turned Hartford into a second-class town.

Now, I would say the only hockey games I like watching are when the Boston Bruins are underdawgs in a play-off series.

I'm obviously biased, but I don't want to see the game amended to make room for guys scoring 75-90 goals. I think the league is perfect where it's at. The average vegas line for an over/under in an NHL game is 6.5. I think that's perfect.

The league has done a great job maintaining the true spirit of the game, while allowing teams more scoring chances.

There is talk every year of cracking down on goalie equipment, which is ridiculous (and several NHL goalies have spoken out about now being exposed to more injuries). Guys are ripping shots in the upper 90's. I don't think goalie equipment is the way to go. There has been a bit of an increase in power plays. I guess one way to possibly increase scoring without screwing around with goalies, or the size of the net would be to increase power play times.

In my rec league, any slash or hook is an automatic double minor. It's not to increase scoring, but more to cut down on the bs that happens when guys who are babies about contact get touched with a stick.

But you really feel the effects when someone takes one of those double minor, and they are very common in our leagues. At least once or twice a game someone draws one of those.

There's not much to do about the regular season being kind of pointless. The league won't decrease games, because it decreases money.

I've never had a problem with baseball having as many games as they do. I think it's kinda cool that it's like a soap opera during the summer. Just about every day your team is on. That is why there is such an attachment with these players, yet most NFL fans see their guys as disposable (to go along with the short shelf life of the average NFL guy).

If the NHL worst problem is the regular season is kinda too long, and kinda pointless, I'd say they are really doing well. Remember 15 years ago when games were at a snail's pace, 2-1 games were the norm, and a lot of teams were forgettable in terms of overall talent?

I really wish they'd look more at the NBA and how that league goes about their business. The NBA season is identical to the NHL, more predicable with the amount of teams, yet interest and ratings are a lot better. You'll probably never top the NBA with that stuff but I think there is a lot to learn from them.

So much for that excitement...4 goals in 5 shots for the Leafs. banghead The Wings goaltending woes continue.

Sucks, but they are probably going to have to build it the new way/nba style of getting high picks and cashing in.

They have been the antithesis of that style for the better part of 3 decades. Some of the front office over there will probably have to swallow their pride, and prepare for that kind of rebuild.

Still have some good players on that team too. Just kinda sucks that they were never able to fill Nik Lidstrom's skates on defense or leadership.

Assuming the target is more NHL fans that aren't already fans, I think scoring needs to increase and the stars will need to unleash big totals to bring those new eyes. Having McDavid chase a Wayne record would get non-fans talking.

If we're talking about refining the game for the current fans and that will translate into less new fans, then yes, the league is fine as is.

Aside from major changes in scoring, I've always thought to make all penalties go the full time. If a team can score twice during a 2min tripping minor, so be it. He stays in the box for the full time. Maybe that is the little tweak needed without changing pad or goal size. I also don't want more penalties because more stoppages are never a good thing. Hockey is fast and needs that flow.

I read an article a while back saying just that. The writing was on the wall, but how could you not chase the cup when you still have Datsyuk and Zetterberg playing at a high level? I think they were a quality goaltender away from winning another cup or two. Howard just couldn't cut it on the biggest stages.

I also think the GM Ken Holland's time has come and gone. He was a genius at finding talent overseas and the homegrown, rough around the edges, grinder types that could still put the puck in the net. He probably should have cut his losses and ended the playoff streak a few years ago.

The current team is fun to watch, but if they make any kind of late season run, they don't have the available capital to acquire assets to push them over the top.

isnt that what they use in interrogation rooms? LOL

Im assuming you mean double-minor. It can be a few things, but it always ends in 4:00 of penalty kill time, in two sets of 2:00 minutes. If a goal is scored before the time reaches 2:00, the penalty time gets reset to 2:00 minutes (if the power play team scores with 3:05 left on the power play, the power play gets moved down to 2:00) It can be two separate penalties committed by the same player, but most commonly it's given out when a guy high sticks another player and draws blood.

There is a huge section of sports fans in this country that are just never going to give the sport a chance. They almost get angry when the topic even gets brought up. I've never understood it. I know hockey fans can be a little on the dbaggy-side (not nearly as bad as soccer fans, sorry) but it's a great sport.

I think if you increase scoring where you have men's league 10-9 type games, you run the risk of alienating your own fan base. A lot of the hardcore fans of the sport don't want to see that. It would almost guarantee you take away the physicality of the sport (look at the NFL the last decade). It would also decrease how special a goal in the NHL is.

I think the one thing I can knock the commissioner and his guys for is that they think they can somehow crack the top 3 of sports in this country, and I don't think that's ever really going to happen, but to be honest, what's wrong with where you're at? The game is in a great spot right now. It's loaded with talent. You have a nice little thing with the winter classic, I think there is room to improve with the selection of games for national broadcasts, and obviously your cash cow is the 2 month battle for the stanley cup.

Hockey could use a BIT more scoring, but not much. Trouble is, if you tweak rules to get more scoring, it's one of those things that if you change a little, you change a lot.

An 8-6, 7-5 game is entertaining once in awhile, but a steady diet of that would be a bore.

man, hats off to the LV Golden Knights, what an amazing story so far!

Gotta say I was dead wrong about them being putrid, what I mean to say was the Arizona Coyotes (yikes).

Still a long way to go, but the league has to be thrilled that they are off to such a great start.

Went to the Wings/Devils game in the new arena last night. What an awesome facility. The light show prior to the game was worth the price of admission, lol. It sent shivers down my spine. The game was good, also. First time I saw a 3 on 3 OT live. That was exciting.

Isnt the wings top affiliate Grand Rapids? The Griffins have been consistently one of the top teams in the AHL for quite awhile.Which would indicate a ton of young talent for The Wings.

Look at CBJ, and how many of their important players were with the Monsters a couple years ago for the Monsters Calder Cup run

I don't think you should really depend on your minor league affiliate for building a team.

I mean yeah, a lot of your players are going to go through that system, but they won't exactly play and develop down there for very long. It's definitely not like Triple-A baseball.

MLB develops their players in the minors. I think the NHL, with the exception of goalies, uses the minors as a way to give their players a taste, get them up to speed on the system, and bring them up as soon as possible...

It's a mixed bag. The Griffins are probably the best run organization in the AHL, which isn't surprising considering the Red Wings were probably the best run organization from the mid 90's up until the last few years.

We do grow some good players up there, but Holland hasn't nailed the superstar elite talent that he used to for quite a while. They have a roster full of likeable, good young players and they are definitely fun to watch. Larkin, Mantha and Athanasiou are good examples of what I'm talking about. Nyquist, Tatar and Abdelkader have big shoes to fill taking over for the vet leadership of Zetterberg, Kronwall and Ericsson in the next couple years. Good players, but they're not the cup hoisting stars of a few years ago.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to play at the brand new Blackhawks practice facility the other night.

I never want to play on bad ice again, lol, easily the best surface I have ever been on.

Top notch facility too, and they have a dunkin donuts in there lol

Early morning ice was great! Sets all night and is nice and crunchy! Always tried to schedule early Sunday mornings when I coached and would go skate early when I was in Alaska.

I got to skate on the Blue Jackets practice ice and also at Joe Louis Arena when I coached my son's team. I don't know if the ice was any better, but I sure felt like Gordie Howe out there, lol.

I watched the Jackets/Maple Leafs game tonight. Columbus is big and hard to play against, Steh Jones is a stud D. You guys got a good one there.

Completely different team than that which got rolled in Boston the other night. Just missing a stud #1 center
and for some reason having trouble with sustained intensity night in and night out. Still a pretty young club though.

Would not be surprised if the Blackhawks miss the playoffs this spring...

Looks like Crawford could be done for the year with vertigo. They have no depth in net. Forsberg is below average, and Glass is a journeyman. I don't really know what kind of assets they have to acquire someone.

Aside from that, they just don't like the Blackhawks of the early 2010's. Seems like the rest of the west can match them on speed and most importantly, puck-possession.

And I just can't believe Vegas is continuing to do what they are doing. Count me as someone who was dead wrong on this. It's not a fluke. They're just really solid as a team. They epitomize what the NHL is about. Star players, volume scorers, name-brand guys are nice, but when it comes to the playoffs, the sum of the parts is going to be the big factor.

Gerard Gallant is an absolute lock for coach of the year. And they have been doing this all with a revolving door in the crease. They have had all kinds of goalie injuries.

That sweep by the Preds broke their spirit. Hopefully the Steelers react the same next season after what the Jags did to them last week.

Needed win for the Blue Jackets tonight. After giving up the goal late in the 3rd period it would've been a tough loss. Wennberg nearly had the game winner before the 3rd period ended.

It was hard to watch. We've been spoiled by the amazing hockey they played from 2009-2015. That's not to say that the era is over, but I think a big reshaping could be in order. They need more depth on their blue line. They aren't a physical team, so if they are going to beat a team like Nasvhille, which is pretty set for the next few years, they're either going to have to get better skilled, or become a more physical team.

Leafs just won their fifth in six games. We got beat in Boston on Saturday, and were dominated.
We will probably play them in the first round of the playoffs and I want that matchup.

Edmonton regressed this season. Detroit is now a mediocre team, Montreal is having a bad year and Vegas continues to surprise.
Tampa Bay looks very strong as we hit the 3rd -quarter pole, if I had to pick a Cup fave right now it would be the Lightning.

And the Bolts are rumored to be looking for a big time dman. Even if it costs them a future star. SY going for the cup full bore.
