Raqqa, ISIS ‘Capital,’ Is Captured, U.S.-Backed Forces Say

BEIRUT, Lebanon — American-backed forces said on Tuesday that they had seized the northern Syrian city of Raqqa from the Islamic State, a major blow to the militant group, which had long used the city as the de facto capital of its self-declared caliphate.

Celebrations erupted in Raqqa, where residents had lived under the repressive rule of militants who beheaded people for offenses as minor as smoking. Fighters could be seen cheering and firing celebratory gunfire in the streets, according to residents reached by phone and text message.

The United States Central Command stopped short of declaring victory, saying that “more than 90 percent of Raqqa is in S.D.F. control,” a reference to the Syrian Democratic Forces, an American-backed militia group made up of Syrian Kurds and Arabs.

Col. Ryan S. Dillon, a spokesman for the United States military in Baghdad, said Tuesday that Raqqa was on the verge of being liberated, but that there were still pockets of the city controlled by the Islamic State. Syrian Democratic Forces officers, however, were emphatic in phone interviews and public statements that they had finally wrested control of the city from the militants after a monthslong campaign.

“The military operation is over,” said Talal Salo, a commander reached by phone at the group’s headquarters in Hasaka.

Sometimes the bombs go off prematurely.

It's a good thing Obama started all of this a couple of years ago. And as always, thanks to our troops.

Yes he most definitely started all this a while back when he withdrew our troops from Iraq and gave birth to the Caliphate.

There's a reason we had to help retake those cities that our Troops lost their lives to take originally.

Key word: Retake.

When did Obama initiate the attack on Mosul again?

You do realize the attacks on ISIS in Syria began long before Trump was elected too don't you?

Maybe you should learn from Kelly's mistakes and not look to the Trump crew for facts. They don't know what that means.

You really trying to deny that Obama started all of these things long before Trump was elected?

I’m not a MORON ... i don’t follow people blindly ... like u appearantly did oBUMa ...

If u think dropping leaflets before bombs to warn people is a good strategy ... then ya ... your right ... oBUMa started it ...

I like trumps approach better ... BOMBS AWAY ....

I know exaclty where oBUMa deserves credit here ... and he does deserve some ... do u?

And Pitt ... he created the mess ... his own words ... there JV ... then the crap hit the fan .. he took them from JV to D-1 players on scholarship at major colleges .... witch is where they sat when my boy took over ...

Does oBUMa deserve some credit in one area for HELPING fix the mess he made ... yup ... but only in one area ...

Well if Africa is where they are fleeing to, we all know the GOP won’t do anything about it.

You mean the ones trump disrespected?

Anyways,

Then-President Barack Obama sent the U.S. forces to Niger in 2013, a time when extremists were on the rise in northwest Africa. Boko Haram was on the march in Nigeria, Niger's neighbor to the south. Radicals aligned with al-Qaida had taken over large parts of Mali, Niger's neighbor to the west.

I encourage everyone to read this article in full.

Who would be Bush, followed by Obama. Two presidents who trump can’t even begin to measure up to.

Hell, I wish Bush was president over trump. I sincerely mean that.

The speech was yesterday and I watched it earlier today.

Bannon is not only wrong about Bush, but he’s a complete joke.

Only around 37-39% of the nation approves of Trump's current output.

I'm sure a majority is more than 50%, right?

Stop it. He is still in the high 80's among those who voted for him. More are coming on board now, especially after the way he handled 3 Hurricanes and a Fire.

The latest poll I saw yesterday has him at 45% overall.
Well over 60% approve of his handling of the Hurricanes and Fire.

Goodbye.

Anyway, back to the topic of the Thread now...

The president noted that one of his “core” 2016 campaign promises was to knock out ISIS, and military orders issued in his first days in office had given U.S. commanders and troops “the full authorities to achieve this mission.”

“We have made, alongside our coalition partners, more progress against these evil terrorists in the past several months than in the past several years,” Trump said.

“They’re giving up, they’re raising their hands, they’re walking off. Nobody’s ever seen that before,” Trump said.

Asked to explain why the gains against ISIS had happened, he replied, “Because you didn’t have Trump as your president. I mean, it was a big difference. I mean, there’s a big, big difference if you look at the military now.”

You can't stump the Trump! thumbsup

they didn't support him during the campaign, they don't support him now, and more than likely, the majority won't support him in the future.

You just exposed your ignorance of the situation. The issue is less about ISIS masquerading as fleeing refugees. That is the propaganda you have been sold and have chosen to buy.
The real issue is British, French, German etc. born Muslims who have felt alienated, disenfranchised and oppressed in their home country and have decided to join ISIS. There are some who count that number well into the thousands. These people have passports and if they go undetected in their movements they can return AND they can travel easily on their European passports to most countries without Visas.

You are lying.

I posted a video from the front in Syria a while back that showed piles of beard hair on the sidewalks and out into the street.

When asked what it was, the Syrian Fighters replied that ISIS shaves off their beards and take off for Europe.

There are over 3000 of them in England alone, at least 400 of them ISIS fighters from Syria and that comes from the government.

So go back to drinking your koolaid, the world disagrees with you.

Terror in Manchester: 3,500 potential terrorists & 400 ISIS fighters back from Syria in UK

THE number of potential terrorists being watched in the UK at the time of the Manchester bombing has swelled to nearly 3,500 - but our security services are using powers to monitor them LESS than they did a year ago.

And...even your junky tabloid source confirms what I said in my reply above. But, you choose to keep spreading fear of the brown skinned foreign man with a bomb while defending the "2nd amendment rights" of the white skinned American man from the hotel window.

I did all that? Wow.

I just happen to fear both the brown skinned man with a bomb AND the white skinned man shooting from the hotel window.

But that doesn't fit with your white supremacist view of me now does it.

The Second Amendment is another issue and that is guaranteed to both white and brown under our Constitution.

Never said those words nor accused you of anything. I just find it amazing how you talk about "terrorism" yet refuse to call the mass shootings in America by mainly white Americans what it is. It is terrorism.

I also personally find it amazing how much energy is spent defending the 2nd Amendment when clearly there is something seriously wrong with a society that wants everybody armed and when the statistics prove just how horrible that amendment is. Or, just how exploited the "wording" in the amendment has become.

I don't remember refusing to call them terrorism.
I usually wait for the Government to label such things, officially. Then I decide if I agree with their assessment.

Our Constitution and Bill of Rights IS America!

There is no twisting of the 2nd Amendment wording as the Supreme Court has upheld those words time and time again.

The right of the citizenry to own firearms for their own defense existed long before our Nation was born and her Constitution written. It went without saying.

I have witnessed Communism come and go and I have witnessed Socialism fail and continue to fail.

Now you come along and think you have better ideas. Pfft.

I will put my faith in those wise men who made this the greatest Nation on earth if you don't mind.
