Since the other "should the front office get a pass" thread was 10 pages long, I thought I would begin a new one.

Also, I just spent a good bit of time responding to something Vers wrote and I don't want to see all that time and effort I put into, locked because of the length of the thread.

So vers...below is my response...

vers...best way I can put it..what would I have done, knowing the Browns were drafting a young QB in the 2017 draft.

First, I would not put the HC in a position where his rookie QB, who really needed another year to develop, was the best QB on a roster that included Hogan and Kessler.

I would have kept Josh McCown so our rookie was not thrown to dogs because he was the best of a bad QB group. The rookie QB could have learned from McCown and allowed to gain some playing time gradually.

Cutting our veteran QB was a mistake...once McCown was cut,
it left Hue few options...Hue picked the QB who played the best and gave the team the best chance to win..there were no other choices, if the Browns priority was to win. Every player on the team knew which QB was playing the best and the HC is telling his players, WINNING is his priority.

Keeping your veteran QB who is very good at tutoring young QBs..that is what I call "supporting" your very young, future starter instead of throwing him to the wolves because there is no other option...IF the franchise goal is to put the best players on the field..those who give the team the best chance to win.

Like I said, you know that all of those players know which QB was playing the best in practice. Naming someone other than the rookie and the players would be wondering what they are really playing for..to win?

The other move that the Browns could have made to help support the QB position, would be to put the best WRs on the field to catch the ball. Our front office did not do that..they simply looked at numbers, not considering anything but numbers ($$$).

Our front office rationale...all 1000 yd WRs are the same. I doubt our front office ever considered that one 1000yd wr took 8 seasons to finally achieve that level of production...

...the guy the Browns did not sign, he achieved the 1000 yd plateau in his first full season as a wr.

Something else, that I pointed out about our front offices WR choice..the 8 yr guy they signed had 8 yrs of mileage on his body, while the other guy had one year. One WR already had a year in Hue's system..the other guy, no experience in Hue's system.

There are ways the Browns front office could have supported their coaching staff and their players...but it would have taken some forward thinking based ones football experience.

The veteran QB the Browns had under contract for another season would have given the Browns the best chance to win as well as being the best individual to help tutor our rookie QB. If I remember correctly, didn't the Browns consider hiring McCown as a coach?...that is how much McCown was thought of as a teacher.

Also, you can't have too many good WRs for a QB to throw to. QBs just love those 6-5/230lb wrs with long arms..what a target. But you would have to know a little bit more about football than just numbers ($$$) to know how valuable a WR like that could be to a franchise.

You can't teach a new front office guy, "forward thinking" based on football experience... as it applies to building a "winning football team"...but guess what?...THE BROWNS ARE NOW #1 IN CAP SPACE.

Winning that cap space trophy is a franchise priority, every year.

...I guess the Browns did have the money to keep McCown and sign Pryor..but the front office priority was not doing what was best to support a rookie QB and build a winning franchise.

That's just the way the Browns roll...

I am apparently in the minority on this although this has been said by those leading this franchise, but I believe all or most of the QB situation is on Hue. The FO is entrusting Hue to find/develop a QB. I believe they've said this.

Our goal this year was to develop a QB. I think there's nothing more evident than the the fact none of the QB have ever won an NFL game, which has been stated over and over by some. I think if Hue wasn't happy with his QBs, the FO would have done more about it.

Hue's #1 trait when picking a QB is accuracy, so it's very very peculiar to me that he picks Kizer as the starter over and over unless Hue decided Kizer was to be the guy and he's trying to develop the young quarterback. Perhaps Hue thinks playing the guy will develop him quicker? Who knows.

As for Pryor... You can't blame the Browns for not signing the guy. They tried with a more than fair offer, and it wasn't good enough for Pryor. I think they felt (maybe a mistake now) that Britt maybe turned a corner and they obviously made him the priority if they couldn't sign Pryor. Maybe Gregg Williams recommended him, who knows? What some don't realize is that one of Britt's positives is that he catches the ball. And yes, I know for some reason he is dropping passes this year. Not every drafted player or signed player will work out.

And our WR aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. A lot of how bad they look has to do with how poor the QB position has been. And don't forget, who we have starting now isn't who we envisioned playing the entire season with. Injuries will do that. And we are still building depth.

Kessler didn't look bad in preseason, in fact I thought he looked like our best bet this season. Hogan played well and Kizer didn't really do anything but show off a rocket arm. I'm not sure what Kessler did to deserve 3rd string... Hue obviously didn't want Osweiler because he benched him. So we went with Kizer and Hogan to start the season, which was most likely Hue's decision.

I thought since the beginning of the season Kessler was our best chance to win games now, but we are playing for the future. Gotta find that QB.

As far as the FO picking Hue to be their QB Guru, yes, I would give them a pass. Let it pan out.

i expect them to be back for the 3rd season.

however, if Haslam said something about 2018 being the year, then Hue and Sashi are gonna have to perform. the team needs to show some serious growth in the 2018-19 season, or they're all gone.

I agree with that.. with emphasis on "serious" growth. Going from 1 win to 3 ain't going to cut it.

The original plan was 5 years ... wonder when he said 3 and what he actually said about it ...

Guess what he says don’t really matter when his temper takes over ...

All we can do at this point is wath it play out and and hope and pray the thief does the right thing and their back in place ...

I guess the Browns did have the money to keep McCown and sign Pryor.

As it is turning out you were wrong about your concern about us not giving in and over paying Pryor to be with this team.

We offered him 8 mil for 4 years and he turned it down...now he is going to be 29 and not successful at WR. Note we cut him in 2016 NOBODY PICKED HIM UP and we brought him back and he had marginal success. We offered him what nobody else would he chose to go to the Redskins and you made that your line in the sand on judging this FO. They are not perfect and have made mistakes...PRYOR HAS NOT BEEN one of them...Shocked you would bring it up as if he was a talented veteran to teach the young WRs we have.

I think both extremes are dumb as hell.

I think the FO and owner agreed to blow it up and both parties knew it was going to be a rough couple of years.

I think they knew they were going to lose and were prepared for it.

I do not think they are surprised by the record.

I do think that the dumb ass fans think w/their hearts instead of the brains and overrated the roster and when reality set in, they needed to assign blame [just as I predicted they would a long time ago.]

I think Hue is getting the blame because so many of those people were "all in" w/the plan. Thus, Hue is the fall guy for the team not meeting their unrealistic expectations.

I think that the organization should stay strong and united in the onslaught of negativity from the media and fan base. I think they should be more like the Steelers and say stuff like, "we are not allowing outsiders to influence the commitment to our plan."

I also think [and know it won't occur] that the fan base back off and quit trying to get either the HC or any FO guys fired.

Stay the course!

If that was the case Hue wouldn’t be coaching like his job depending on it, yanking QB’s right and left. C’mon, get real.

You need to learn how to read. Read what I said again and try to open your mind this time. I never mentioned what Hue thought. I addressed how the owner and the FO thought about the first couple of years.

Look man..........it's your damn right to bash Hue and try to get him fired. But, it is my right to fight you about it.

That's as real as it gets!

I’m accepting of the fact that a HC that turns down a personal foul penalty is a moron. The FO isn’t relived in culpability in this fiasco but the HC is no brain trust and he’s certainly not a QB whisperer as he yanks his choice of starter in and out every week.

Neither group has shown the ability to properly lead an NFL franchise and I will not accept trash just because I want consistency. Trash is trash regardless of how you spin it.

You can't have too many good WRs..the Redskins get it..the Harvard Boys, NOT SO MUCH.

BTW, Sashi and the Browns had a chance to match the Redskins contract offer to Pryor...but Sashi, using his superior football judgement decided that the Browns didn't need any more good WRs, they had Kenny Britt.

The Browns, #1 in cap space...#32 in wins... notallthere

peen...not sure what you are basing your comment on??

Pryor ranks 2nd in WR receptions, just one reception behind their leading WR..

Pryor ranks 1st in WR yardage..

Pryor ranks 2nd in yds per catch among WRs..

The Redskins pass offense spreads the ball around with several good pass catchers to support their QB.

What has Britt got to do with whether Pryor made a mistake by not signing our contract?

Are you forecasting he will make as much money in the rest of his career as he would have made if he had signed the Browns contract? Because I am pretty sure he'll fall way way short.

No, I am not forecasting anything. However, the FO turned their back on Pryor once they signed Britt. I know you and the rest of the FO homers will deny it. That's fine. I don't care. But, I'm not going to partake in your charade.

You're creating your own narrative and can't keep to what people say - instead you manufacture crap and make stuff up.

Ballpeen said Pryor was probably regretting not signing with the Browns. I agree and liked his post.

You didn't make a football post - you just mocked Peen and the people who liked his post.

I explained to you the reason why Peen was right - Pryor won't ever make as much as he could have if he signed with the Browns.

Your response? to call me a homer and to mock.

It's an old and pathetic pattern of behavior.

You conveniently forgot about the part about "Maybe we better be happy he didn't." That is WHY I brought up Britt.

Now, throw more mud about how terrible I am as a person. I don't care!!! I'll continue to voice my opinion and in this case, the Browns would have been better off signing Pryor instead of Britt. That is my ONLY point.

Your point is mute. The Browns offered to pay Pryor more than ANY other team - just like Schwartz. The agents for those two players cost their clients a lot of money. Period. Those agents did not do their jobs.

I find it laughable that the FO bashers on here keep throwing up Schwartz and Pryor as examples of FO ineptitude. Many of those same bashers still bring up Barnidge and guys like Des Bryant who are no longer in the league. rofl

The FO has made their share of mistakes...but not making great offers to their own players sure isn't one of them.

When you 'like' a post it doesn't give you the option of qualifying which bits to like and not like - you can always ASK if you are that concerned, rather than simply trying to mock people.

As for the part about "maybe we better be happy we didn't" - 1. it's not a definitive statement. 2. I've stated dozens and dozens of times I'd rather have Pryor than Britt before the season started 3. Is Pryor playing like a #1 WR in a team where they have Cousins throwing him the ball? That's the money we offered him, would you be happy paying Pryor the money we paid Britt?

Pryor has been outperformed by Ricardo Louis this season FYI.

Just to make sure you understand - Peen wasn't saying he prefers Britt to Pryor ... he's making a general comment about whether *maybe* we were better off not signing Pryor because he has not performed well.

Hes 4th in REC, 3rd in yards, T3rd on TDs.

Also, he has been benched and played a season low of about 10 snaps last week.

Pryor hasnt been good since the 1st half last year. The problem is we replaced him with Kenny Britt.

...and 5th in yds/catch. All of this in spite of having the 2nd most targets (only trails the leader by 1 target).

NFL WR Stats:
http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?t...y=WIDE_RECEIVER

45 Ricardo Louis CLE WR 21 250 11.9 35.7 31 0 5 0 13 61.9 0

61 Terrelle Pryor WAS WR 18 223 12.4 37.2 44T 1 3 1 13 72.2

I think everyone would agree Cousins throwing the ball *should* be very beneficial.

Quite frankly I think we are building something good here...sooner or later (unfortunately it will be later)
we will start winning.

Then Hue will become a lot smarter and the FO will get accolades as well.

Worse thing will be Haslam starts bailing and firing.

I like both Hue who is a good HC and I like the New guys, I think there is a lot more cohesiveness with Coaches and FO then the media tells us. They try to read into what is not there to make stories of us blowing this up again...with of course riding on the dismay of all due to our record!

Sounds like TP should have stayed and been producing some/focused in our offense instead of demoted on a one year contract, and Britt would've just got a phone call minus a contract.

The front office has EARNED a pass with it's current streak of futility. They've all bought into this "plan" and it was never something that could be judged in two years anyway. Besides, no one qualified would even come here to save us. That's where we're at... again.

Dumb mistakes include getting rid of McCown. That's one of the dumbest. Since you drafted another QB from the "kick the tires" category, Brock should have been here no longer than the preverbal "cup of coffee", Hogan falls directly into the "keep dreaming" category (good-bye, too much ass in one room) and Kizer becomes your #2 behind McCown to start the season after his diligent work in the pre-season. The Kizer rules begin with "does not see the field before week 6 barring injury or blowout". DOES NOT start a game.

We're (still, three years now) a team that knows that one critical mistake on either side of the ball will likely cost us the game. Our solution this season was to throw a rookie QB to the wolves, week 1 vs Pittsburgh. I think this is a FO that can't see the forest through the trees and certainly has a big problem with understanding the immediate future while hiding behind "stick to the plan".

We CAN'T continue losing in such a historically prolific manner. It makes players want OUT, no one on the outside will even set foot in the door, and players vow to "stay in school" just to avoid the words no one wants to hear before their name... "With the first pick in the _____ NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns select..." First six weeks of this season should have been "best chance to win" mentality. The bar is SO LOW, all you have to do is win a couple games to keep the natives in their ever-delusional "we're about to turn the corner" bubble. Josh McCown was best chance to win. Kizer would have already shown "glimpses" in his two or three "no pressure we ain't winnin' this game anyway" appearances, and all would be well in Mudville.

TP should have been signed, sealed and delivered to put his money where your mouth is. We're 4 billion under the cap and he was the ONLY weapon at WR. In our infinite wisdom we choose to groom QBs without WRs, you can't make this stuff up. Dumb and dumber.

Hue doesn't really even pass the eye test of a legitimate NFL coach at times (usually Sunday around 1:45). His play calling is predictable, he doesn't understand math or how the clock works (not that anyone has during the last 15 years) and he makes downright stupid decisions. 4th and 1 you don't accept a 15 yard penalty? They were at the 42, what do you think happens next? Now, you can call me an armchair QB, but that falls into the "cardinal sins of coaching" category in my book. Do we even have enough faith in Hue's system to WANT him to groom an NFL QB? I don't know... but we're stuck... Stuck with Hue through next season. Unless turmoil moves him out in the off season or early next. If so, it will be arguments over which QB we should or should have drafted, and long after all coaching candidates have leased their new homes. Probably 4-5 weeks into next season. That's how it works in Cleveland.

So what do we do? Stick to the plan... This "fine wine" sits on the shelf with a label that says "do not open 'til 2019". In the meantime, week by week, we sip "night train" out of a red solo cup. We do it and we like it... cuz we're Browns fans.
