Cavs hold team meeting to clear the air before Tuesday's practice

https://www.thescore.com/news/1407269

Tyronn Lue wants to make sure everyone is on the same page.

The Cleveland Cavaliers held a team meeting prior to Tuesday's practice to clear the air amidst their sluggish start to the season, their head coach told ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

"Off the court we've got great chemistry, great bond. Just, on the court we just got to be better," Lue explained. "Like, talking, communicating, enjoying the game together. Having fun. ... Right now guys are not having fun."

The Cavaliers currently sit tied for 10th in the Eastern Conference, matching records with perennial bottom-feeders such as the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks. At 3-4, LeBron James is off to his worst start since opening up his career with an 0-5 slide back in 2003.

James was a "vocal" participant in the meeting, though "most everyone spoke," a source told McMenamin. James had previously insisted he was "not going to go crazy" about the early-season losses after Sunday's desultory performance against the Knicks. Meanwhile, Lue had called the team's recent play "unacceptable," specifically citing a lack of effort in transition defense. Both Lue and his players suggested the issues boil down to their fitness level.

"Naturally, the slow start that we've had prompted us to just all get on the same page and kind of figure out what we need to do," Kevin Love told McMenamin. "I feel like we can get in better shape, that's going to help us on the defensive end."

While the meeting won't make the Cavs collectively get into better shape, Love expects it will pay dividends in other ways.

"Communication, energy and just getting the new guys to (become) adjusted," he said. "So time will tell how it's going to play out, but we have a lot of really good positive energy from today, so, it was a great practice. ... I think it definitely lightened the mood and it was definitely a get-to-know-you moment with a lot of guys. ... I think in some odd way it will definitely help us."

The Cavaliers currently sit 14th in offensive rating, but rank almost rock-bottom at 27th in defensive rating. They take on the 3-3 Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night.

It blows my mind when professional players say they are not in shape.

That is beyond amazing!

That is...you get millions of dollars to play a sport and you can't gin up the energy to go to the gym and run some laps?

Lift some weights?

These guys need to spend a week with me painting a house or Pit pouring a foundation and find their motivation again.

Or working with me.

Yeah, I don't get the whole "not in shape" thing. It's your freaking job!!!

You have chef's, sometimes personal chef's. The team lays out a banquet for you, Masseuses, personal trainers, team trainers, you get every thing handed to you on a silver platter.

Ice baths, saunas, any little need you have is attended to. Parking? It goes on and on.

And then: well, not in shape.

My money's on the fact that Lebron isn't included in the not in shape category on our team.

I thought the preseason was to help players get back into game shape.I guess a lot of our players now are older guys in the league so maybe it's going to take them longer.

I think that is what people are not getting. None of these guys are not in shape like a normal person is not in shape. For elite athletes, in shape is at a whole different level

This defense is absurd, teams vying to be playing in June don’t look like this

How can that be? They had a team meeting earlier.

Honestly, anyone that thought Rose and D Wade would help this team was dreaming. Old, and injured. Slow, and not what they were.

our defense is crap

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I think Wade is actually playing well with the 2nd team.

I think you're right about Love struggling as the second option. It's one thing to be the first option on a perennial loser. He got used to be the third option on a perennial winner. He's not efficient enough to be that second guy. Too streaky. You have to hope Thomas helps with that.

Thompson is a non factor.

Crowder is a non factor.

LeBron looks disinterested.

Lue is a moron.

Wade is balling with the second unit, IMO. That was a great move both by the coach and player.

They need LeBron to go Superman mode.

Crowder is a non-factor.

All I heard was how great he was in that trade.

The NBA is about stars.

You never trade stars.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see love moved for a couple pieces if this continues. We just have so many holes right now. We got fleeced in the Boston trade and we have a coach who won’t play anyone younger than 75 in the first month of season.

What the hell is LeBron doing?

This guy says he's chasing Jordan's ghost.

This would never happen on a Jordan team.

The Cavs aren't just losing.

They're getting blown out on a nightly basis.

It's OctoberNovember.

Talk to me when someone other than LeBron is playing in the Finals. He has earned the right to do whatever he wants.

If I'm Dan Gilbert, and I'm paying you to play elite basketball to the tune of $20+mil a year, no you don't have the right to do what you want.

That kinda money you better be an example of what a professional basketball should be.

Cavs need to look at trading anyone not named lebron to get younger names like Bledsoe and okafor are on block, this team is just too old to compete

Lol no he hasn’t. He’s just as responsible for this abortion as anyone, the fact that he can’t even go hero mode to pull out a win is telling, he tried to tonight and got swatted down
