Hue Jackson since becoming HC has had a assorted variety Of qbs running the offense and in his other roles before taking over as HC. So do we know for sure what kind he covets ? He's had qbs with big down field arms Flacco and Palmer He's had qbs with no arm strength Kessler He's had qbs with quick releases Dalton And he's had inaccurate qbs Kizer and Campbell And he's had qbs that just plain suck as RG3.
I don't anyone knows what kind of qb he wants for this offense cause he's kicked the tires so many as the Browns HC And I will add we don't even know what kind of offense Hue envisions Hes had some success with different qbs I just don't think we can say at this moment this guy is a fit etc etc I only know be wants a qb that consistantly create scoring drives

He wants Kessler's accuracy with Kizer's physical skills, Hogan's brains, and (early) RGIII's mobility.

Hue wants AQB that has all the physical tools as well as the smarts. Just like every other coach.

I don't know what Hue Jackson wants in a QB, but I think he'll have one he's familiar with when he's the offensive coordinator of the Bengals next year.

Quite a list. Quite a long list. Not sure he could tell us in three sentences.
I have not liked what we bought into at QB.
I am REALLY certain that I do not need the "magic beans" 'Trust me' from him again. Because I have, I no longer can. Because he seemed to avoid throwing players, especially QBs, under the bus, I thought it was classy. Now it is just some snake oil Kool-aid. Apparently we are to take the hook firmly.
We should have a much better QB by now. The FO promises of Brighter Tomorrows is not trustworthy either.

How about a 6'5" 235 lb intelligent, strong armed, athletic QB with great leadership skills who comes from a winning program in a pro-style offense. Oh wait, we passed on Carson Wentz - that's right.

Hindsight. How about foresight. Mr. Jackson had every opportunity to evaluate and ensure the FO selected Wentz rather than trade back. I guarantee you if Hue Jackson said Wentz is the man, they would have stayed at 2 and drafted Wentz, but no. Mr. QB Wisperer loved the God Awful RG III who moved the Earth for him in his 1 hour evaluation. Yes, he wanted Goff, but the Rams jumped us and Wentz was available and he said no, otherwise, IMHO, he would have been a Brown.

That is what people don't seem to remember. Hue had a huge say on who we got as QB. RGIII was Hue. Wanting Geoff and not Wentz was Hue. Kessler, Hue.
I am not saying the FO is clean in this deal, but there is a lot of dirt to spread to all corners.
The key isn't who we passed on, the key is who we select next.

I really don't know what kind of QB Hue wants. We have heard rumors about like Goff and Garoppolo. We heard he liked RGIII, but Sashi said that he thought that RGIII could be the long-term answer in Cleveland. We heard he didn't like Wentz as much as Goff, but Depo said that he didn't consider Wentz a top 20 type QB. I think a lot of people are twisting what we have heard to fit their agenda and either exonerate Hue from the qb decisions or to exonerate the FO. I wish I knew what was actually said when all of these guys discussed the QBs, but I don't know..........and neither do all the others who are making such strong claims on this board.

And then my answer is all of the above.
Strong arm, very accurate, mobile and can gain tons of yardage if teams over play the RB in a read option.
QB who has touch and throw on the run or in the pocket with great accuracy.
In other words he wants Mayfield jmho

In other words he wants Mayfield jmho Baker Mayfield is listed at 6' 1". This is does not meet Hue's threshold for QBs. In Hue's own words.... Jackson explained 6-2 is his threshold for ideal quarterback height. “I think a guy has to be about 6-2 to play in this league,” Jackson said. “The special guys, I don’t want to take anything away from any of the other quarterbacks, there have been guys who have played in this league who are not 6-2, but the majority of the guys who have played are 6-2 or a little bit better, and that’s just what I like in a quarterback.” Link

Hue had a huge say on who we got as QB. RGIII was Hue. Wanting Geoff and not Wentz was Hue. Kessler, Hue. At the time of the RG3 signing, the Browns were holding the #2 pick in the 2016 draft and had McCown and Austin Davis on the roster.
The Browns had a 50-50 chance of landing the QB Hue preferred in the draft, a month before the 2016 draft.
...it was clear, with two veterans on the roster (RG&Mac)the Browns did not want to force a rookie to start for the Browns. RG3 was signed to a 2 yr contract, thus he clearly was not viewed as the long term answer for the Browns.
Hue preferred Goff over Wentz...but 2 weeks before the draft the Rams traded up to #1. At that point, the Browns felt sure that the Rams pick would be Goff.
Obviously the Browns analytics crew did not rank Wentz high, leading to the comment from Depodesta, (the Browns did not rate Wentz as a top 20 talent).
I realize some want to paint Hue's preference of Goff over Wentz as an example of Hue's inability to recognize QB talent...but as a rookie and in pre-season it became clear that, Goff needed time to sit which he did until Nov 20. Goff started the last 7 games of his rookie season, all losses.
Goff's 2016 stats..112/205 (54.6%)...1089 yds...5 tds/7 ints...26 sacks.
Based on Goff's 2016 season, many want to use his 7 game rookie stats as evidence of Hue's ability to judge QB talent.
This season Goff has started the first 8 games and ranks 9th in the NFL in yardage.
Goff's 2017 stats...147/244 (60.2%)...2030 yds...13 tds/4 ints...10 sacks. The Rams are 6-2 and in sole position of 1st place in the NFC west.
WAS HUE WRONG ABOUT GOFF? Also, it Depodesta who claimed that Wentz was not a top 20 talent.
The Browns traded out of the #2 spot then reached big time to draft Kessler, clearly not the type of QB that Hue is said to prefer. Most NFL franchises do not draft their franchise QB at the end of the 3rd round.
Kessler was an analytics pick, a bone to Hue for not drafting a QB he preferred.
The Kizer pick...Hue liked Trubisky and Mahomes in the 1st round..the boys did nothing as other teams moved up in the draft to take QBs Hue preferred before the Browns could. The front office strategy was clearly, DO NOTHING, and hope the Browns luck out and have a franchise drop into their lap.
Kizer dropped into our lap at #52, so the boys throw another bone to Hue. Everyone was told before the draft that Kizer needed another year in college and would need to sit his rookie season to learn. The Browns were in good shape drafting Kizer, with veteran QB Josh McCown on the roster and who still had 1 yr left on his contract...just one problem, Sashi cut him in Feb. The front office traded for Osweiller in March and he was cut on Sep 1st.
Hue Jackson was left with Kessler, Hogan and Kizer and while the Browns have tried them all as their starting QB, Kizer, the guy who needed another year of college ball and who needed to sit his rookie season...Kizer is the best of the 3 QBs.
Don't you think the front office did a masterful job of filling the Browns needs at QB..for the 2nd year in a row...

By the looks of it, one that doesn't turn the ball over and especially in the red zone.
Who knows what Hue wants? His QB decisions, path of development and etc for ALL our young QBs is just mind boggling and confusing to the point I lost a lot of faith in Hue being the "qb whisperer" and etc. Him and David Lee are lacking IMO. All our QBs have had a total shot and kick to the nuts for their confidence and etc.
IDK, give him a talented one right off the bat, one that doesn't need much development and has the physical attributes and I think Hue is set. Give him projects, and we're all doomed (including the projects.)

Remember the stories that came out about the firing of scouts that wanted Wentz right before the draft ? With all the stuff that goes on with us , it like one forgotten thing after another. Hue/FO were showing intrest way back then in Kizer https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/many-...d-carson-wentz/The Browns' decision to pass on Carson Wentz in the draft combined with the rookie's sterling performance against them in Week 1, a potential season-ending injury to Browns starter Robert Griffin III and comments from Browns official Paul DePodesta intimating the Browns didn't believe Wentz would be a "top-20 quarterback" have created a tempest in Cleveland. As it turns out, not everyone involved in scouting quarterbacks in Cleveland before the 2016 draft was in agreement. According to numerous sources with knowledge of the situation, several of the more seasoned scouts and evaluators the Browns parted with prior to the draft -- an unusual time to release such employees -- actually preferred Wentz to quarterback Jared Goff and believed him to be the greater pro prospect. It was clear to many in the organization dating back to December, when the Browns held intense draft meetings, that the newly-empowered analytics department, soon to be spearheaded by DePodesta, strongly preferred Goff. And new coach Hue Jackson and his offensive coordinator, Pep Hamilton, were not high on Wentz but prized Goff, sources said, and made that clear to the rest of the organization. The Browns opted to release six members of the organization -- many of them experienced, old-school scouts -- just three weeks before the draft. At the time, they were bailing on the quarterback market in the draft (and Wentz in particular) and shopping their second-overall pick to other teams. Many of those men, a group that included former general managers and personnel directors, had never met DePodesta personally before being let go, and, with their contracts set to expire after the draft, they were going to be let go in 2016 as part of downsizing anyway. But the timing of their release raised eyebrows then and continues to generate chatter now given the high-profile way in which their quarterback decision has played out and the fact that the segment of personnel they let go were more pro-Wentz than others. Wentz has played just one game, and will surely face some hurdles in his rookie season, but the reviews on his debut were overly positive. The Browns could end up with the first pick in the draft, and evaluators are already gushing over Notre Dame junior quarterback DeShone Kizer. The Browns will almost certainly be taking a passer very high in 2017.

I was on board with the first 85% of your post.. .but let me ask you this:
When we had Mccown, Brock, Kizer, Hogan, and Kessler to choose from... how do we know that it was Sashi that determined the 3 we'd go in to the season with vs. Hue determining which 3?
Look at Brock, a guy we were going to pay $$ whether he played or not. Clearly the FO valued the pick he brought more than they did him, but if Hue said "Hey Sash.. I think I can get some mileage of him", what possible motivation would Sashi have for cutting him?
Same goes for McCown. Clearly they all loved what Josh brought to the organization (minus his record) that they were willing to bring him in to the coaching ranks. If Hue said "Hey Sash... I know Josh is long in the tooth, but I think I can get enough our of him"... what motivation would he have to cut him?
Even if you factor in that Sashi is going to lean a little heavier on wanting to keep the drafted guys like Kessler and Kizer around, I have a very hard time believing that if Hue wanted Brock or Josh that Sashi would flip him the bird and give him Hogan instead.
I think we should consider the possibility that maybe Hue got himself in over his head with the QB situation.

Well Sashi is in charge of the roster and player personnel. It seems to me that would indicate there would be far more of a reason to show that Sashi wasn't the person who made those decisions. After all, it's actually in his job description to make those calls.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

You could be right or you could once again simply defending the FO and blaming Hue for all that goes wrong.
I am not saying your take is wrong, but I do have a few questions.
--Do you think it was Hue's idea to cut Haden?
--Do you think it was Hue's idea to cut Greco?
--Do you think it was Hue's idea to not trade up for Goff?
--Do you think it was Hue's idea to not aggressively pursue Garoppolo?
--Do you think that it is fairly evident that Sashi makes decisions w/out Hue's blessing and if so, couldn't he have done so in this instance?
--What do you make of Osweiler's comment when he was benched for Kizer? In case you missed it, Brock said to "go ask the GM."
--Who do you think has a better resume in evaluating NFL QBs? Hue or Sashi?
Again, you could be right and this all could be Hue's fault and poor Sashi is just a victim of Hue's terrible evaluations. I just kinda doubt it.

Same goes for McCown. Clearly they all loved what Josh brought to the organization (minus his record) that they were willing to bring him in to the coaching ranks. If Hue said "Hey Sash... The #1 motive in many of these deals...$$$$.
Cutting McCown was dumb..it showed Sashi's inexperience, not being able to project into the future even a few months.
An experienced football brain looks at McCown, Kessler and Hogan, plus a young 2017 QB draft pick and thinks..if we cut Josh, we are left with an experience level of .66 yrs at the QB position...CAN'T DO IT!. Especially knowing what McCown's strengths are...teaching, tutoring and playing QB at a decent level.
An inexperienced (in football) Harvard brain thinks...look at the money I can save if we only have QBs on rookie contracts.

In addition, another factor, who has the final say?
Is there anyone who believes that Hue didn't want McCown to help out with the young QBs?
Is there anyone that believes Schwartz would have been kicked to the curb if HUE HAD FINAL SAY OVER THE ROSTER?
Is there anyone who believes HUE WOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED PRYOR?
Yes, it might have cost the Browns some cap space, but what are your priorities...winning football games or winning the "cap space" award.
The Browns won the "cap space" award last year and are currently in first place this year.
The Browns have not won a football game yet, but the franchise has the money to spend...what is wrong with that picture?
...especially when we think of the talent Sashi sent packing, rather than retaining them.

That's just it.. somebody didn't think Josh could still play at a decent level and playing is what he still wanted to do. Was it Sashi? Was it Hue? I think it was probably both as they wanted to retain him as a coach.
As for the money theory... sorry bud, but you don't drop a cool $16 mil on a 2nd Rd Pick and a QB you don't intend any level of investment it, then turn around and think saving $3 mil is an act of frugality.
If there's a stat monkey out there who would know how to put this together, I'd be curious to know if over the last 2 seasons what the comparison to money saved via cuts/trades is versus the money spent on contracts?

The Browns have the guy experienced in dollars and cents with control over the roster...
The guy with experience in football is not in charge and does not have final say over who stays and who goes.
After watching this setup for 2 years, you have to ask, what are the priorities of this franchise...and Haslam needs to decide if he wants to win the "cap space" trophy...or if he wants to win football games that lead to division championships and a shot at a "Super Bowl" trophy.
Who should be in charge of the roster?

And, now that some time has passed, we see that:
* We no longer miss Schwartz and we're not tied to an exorbitant contract to lock down that roster spot. We have a home-grown replacement that has done quite well locking down that position.
* We don't miss Pryor, at all. He's done nothing this season on a better team. The only way we can say we miss him is that we have so little at the position... but, that's not enough reason to overpay for mediocrity.
* McCown - meh. It really doesn't matter if he'd be here or wouldn't. Him not being here, if nothing else, let's us get a little more clarity with the younger guys - namely, that it looks like none of them are the answer so far.
In short - time has shown that every last one of those moves was correct, despite some of them being painful in the short-term.

I know Josh is long in the tooth, but I think I can get enough our of him"... what motivation would he have to cut him? 2847..this front office..what motive?
2847...what you are not getting is the evidence that is right before your face.
How many games have the Browns won?
How many "cap space" trophies have the Browns won?
Who is in charge of the roster and the spending?
If Hue was in charge of the roster, you think he wouldn't have spent some of that money to keep our best free agent talent?

[color:#3366FF] 1 How many "cap space" trophies have the Browns won? 0 (which may I point out means we still have more wins than...)Who is in charge of the roster and the spending? Sashi. Unless we are going to start picking and choosing when it's ok for Jimmy to insert himself and hand pick players. If Hue was in charge of the roster, you think he wouldn't have spent some of that money to keep our best free agent talent? Dear Lord I hope he wouldn't have! You mean over pay many (not all) players who went on to have maybe mediocre careers elsewhere? Then the criticism would be of why we're overpaying them a la Haden.[/color]

IMO, no one is going to change the way Sashi Brown's brain works. He is educated and experienced in $$$. Can't change Sashi because he is educated in one main area, dollars and cents.
Hue Jackson..probably not the guy you want in charge of the 53 man roster. Hue has more than enough to do as HC and OC.
What the Browns need is someone who is experienced in football and dollars and cents...kind of like a GM.
There are some good candidates who can balance the two areas of dollars and cents..and football talent. The Browns need to add one to the mix and give him control over the roster.

Fair enough assessment. I will go one step further...a name..Nick Caserio, Director of Player Personnel for the Patriots.
With Belichick named the Patriots HC/GM, Caserio is a prime target..and he is from Ohio and played HS and college football in Ohio.
A smart owner with the issues the Browns have would be all over Caserio.
