Pretty long, so I'll just post the link.

These people are incredibly racist and stupid, and no amount of this man embarrassing himself on a daily basis will ever change their cult-like beliefs.

That said, I feel sorry for them. These people deserve solutions, and not a sociopath in the throes of dementia who is golfing while Congress further destroys their lives.

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/...pporters-215800

Some choice bits:

Quote:
“Everybody I talk to,” he said, “realizes it’s not Trump who’s dragging his feet. Trump’s probably the most diligent, hardest-working president we’ve ever had in our lifetimes. It’s not like he sleeps in till noon and goes golfing every weekend, like the last president did.”

I stopped him, informing him that, yes, Barack Obama liked to golf, but Trump in fact does golf a lot, too—more, in fact.

Del Signore was surprised to hear this.

“Does he?” he said.

“Yes,” I said.

He did not linger on this topic, smiling and changing the subject with a quip. “If I was married to his wife,” Del Signore said, “I don’t think I’d go anywhere.”

Quote:
Next to Bala was a gray-haired man who told me he voted for Trump and was happy so far because “he’s kept his promises.”

I asked which ones.

“Border security.” But there’s no wall yet. “No fault of his,” the man said.

What else? “Getting rid of Obamacare.” But he hasn’t. “Well, he’s tried to.”

What else? “Defunding Planned Parenthood.” But he didn’t. “Not his fault again,” the man said.

I asked for his name. “Bill K.,” he said. He wouldn’t give me his last name. “I don’t trust you,” he said.

Quote:
“They always say they want to bring the steel mills back,” Frear said, “but they’re going to have to do a lot of work to bring the steel mills back.”

He hasn’t built the wall yet, either. “I don’t care about his wall,” said Frear, 76. “I mean, if he gets his wall—I don’t give a [expletive], you know? But he has a good idea: Keep ’em out.”

He also hasn’t repealed Obamacare. “That’s Congress,” she said.

And the drug scourge here continues unabated. “And it’s not going to improve for a long time,” she said, “until people learn, which they won’t.”

“But I like him,” Frear reiterated. “Because he does what he says.”

Quote:
“You’re not a fan of equality?” I asked.

“For people who deserve it and earn it,” he said. “All my ancestors, Italian, 100 percent Italian, the Irish, Germans, Polish, whatever—they all came over here, settled in places like this, they worked hard and they earned the respect. They earned the success that they got. Some people don’t want to do that. They just want it handed to them.”

“Like NFL players?” I said.

“Well,” Del Signore responded, “I hate to say what the majority of them are …” He stopped himself short of what I thought he was about to say.

Quote:
Schilling looked at her husband, Dave McCabe, who’s 67 and a retired high school basketball coach. She nodded at me. “Tell him,” she said to McCabe, “what you said the NFL is …”

McCabe looked momentarily wary. He laughed a little. “I don’t remember saying that,” he said unconvincingly.

Schilling was having none of it. “You’re the one that told me, liar,” she said.

She looked at me.

The NFL?

"[N-word] for life,” Schilling said.

“For life,” McCabe added.

How did you get that from an article detailing the thoughts of racist morons brainwashed into believing a rapist game show host who golfs all day and screws up everything he touches is doing a good job?

Also, 40's post is a good illustration that for most of these people, its grievance politics and nothing more. They know deep down that Trump is a moron that's failing, but as long as they believe it drives the opposition crazy, that's all they care about.

I read the entire article earlier today.

This was a follow-up to one he wrote right after the 2016 election... you know- a 'one-year-later' piece. Interviewed some of the same people.

You omitted a very important section which I will now share. I find it kind of telling in a couple ways.

Quote:
At Johnstown’s JWF Industries, a 450-employee manufacturing company, business hasn’t gone up this year, owner Bill Polacek told me, but he’s expecting a 30 percent jump next year. He chalks that up to Trump and his “pro-business” “mood.”

But even this optimistic stance highlights some of the deep-seated troubles here. “Right now, if I could find 150 people, I’d put them to work,” Polacek said. He needs machinists. He needs welders. “But it’s hard to find people,” he said—people with the requisite skills, people who can pass a drug test.

“We just don’t have the workforce,” said Liston, the city manager. “If they are employable, and have a skill set, basically they already moved out of the area.”

Some of the later-in-life blue-collar workers who are still here can be loath to learn new trades. “We’ve heard when working with some of the miners that they are reluctant because they’re very accustomed to the mining industry,” said Linda Thomson, the president of JARI, a nonprofit economic development agency in Johnstown that provides precisely the kind of retraining, supported by a combination of private, state and federal funding, that could prepare somebody for a job in Polacek’s plant. “They really do want to go back into the mines. So we’ve seen resistance to some retraining."

Here's the very "hand up instead of a handout" that could lift their burdens and give them a new lease on life... and they'd rather hold out for a job that will ultimately become extinct. From earlier in the article:

Quote:
BMI Mining Report projected coal production to grow by 6 percent and 2 percent this year and next year, respectively, but also noted: This “does not reflect an expectation for President Donald Trump to revive the sector and our longer-term view out to 2021 remains decidedly downbeat.”

Even the industry experts are clear about coal's trajectory. These people don't want to do something new. They don't even want to try. I hope there are some out there who are taking advantage of the help being offered, but it sure sounds like the folks in this town are not.

How do you help someone like that?

These people obviously aren't being served by anyone.

Even they understand that Trump is talking out of his ass on all of this, but the other option was someone who also lied to them, but while taking a certain glee in their livelihood being eliminated.

And let's face it - the Democrats common refrain that these people will be re-trained for the new energy sector is a callous lie. Those jobs will be in CA and be given to entry-level graduates with advanced degrees, and they know it.

I also don't get this constant pushing of "Trump is a Racist" stuff.

He has a family full of Jewish relatives and even though you all dismissed Ben Carson as an Uncle Tom from the very beginning, Mr. Carson will tell anyone who listens that Donald Trump is no Racist. Those who know Trump over the decades will tell you the same.

I guess when you run out of excuses for the failings of the Liberal/Progressive Movement, turning to Racism is an easy out.

Because he has a long and detailed history of being racist.

He's been fined multiple times by the NJ Gaming Commission for forcing black employees off the casino floor when he and other high rollers were there. He's been fined by the Justice Department for having employees write 'C' (for 'colored') on rental applications. After being informed that the group of black men he took out a full page ad demanding they be killed were innocent, he stood by his comments, saying that they were "one step above animals".

He stated on the record that he doesn't allow black people to handle or count his money. When asked last year if he actually said that, he answered "probably"

Not to mention his entire campaign and presidency to date has been little more than both overt and dogwhistling racism.

Actually, there are many, many people who have known Trump for decades that have said on the record that he's extremely racist. That, coupled with the myriad of concrete evidence pointing to him as a racist, kind of dilutes a handful of people who work for him denying it.

So, I read this article completely, and took some parts that i want to comment on.

if we are gonna get real, then this might as well be the thread for it. my post will be long:

This is something i've mentioned before that conservatives on the board have dodged entirely. the blatant hypocrisy of it all.

The FACT is conservative couldn't be paid to shut up about obama's golfing, yet Trump has eclipsed 8 years of obama's golfing in less than a year.

and trump supporters are nowhere to be found on this topic. wonder why...

Quote:

Some of the later-in-life blue-collar workers who are still here can be loath to learn new trades. “We’ve heard when working with some of the miners that they are reluctant because they’re very accustomed to the mining industry,” said Linda Thomson, the president of JARI, a nonprofit economic development agency in Johnstown that provides precisely the kind of retraining, supported by a combination of private, state and federal funding, that could prepare somebody for a job in Polacek’s plant. “They really do want to go back into the mines. So we’ve seen resistance to some retraining.”

This is also a topic we fail to talk about because people don't want to be real with themselves. This is the very definition of an entitled mentality that conservatives try to roast liberals on.

We have a population who does not, will not, and won't change in order to survive. they are hellbent on doing it this particular way, no matter how stupid it might be.

this also talks to the overall education of our country, or lack thereof. The internet is there. laptops, smartphones, libraries. and yet these miners choose to stay uneducated about their own industry. they refuse to change because they believe that Trump can somehow same an industry that the MARKET decided was gonna go the way of the dinosaur.

at the end of the day, no matter who they look to, whether its government or business, we can not save a demographic that doesn't want to be saved. the retraining is there yet they absolutely refuse to do it.

that's laziness and entitled spoiled snowflake crap. ya know, the very thing they claimed hillary and bernie supporters were.

Quote:

For three decades, Johnstown had a powerful friend on Capitol Hill in Rep. Jack Murtha, who steered millions in pork-barrel money to his hometown from his seat on the House Appropriations Committee. But Murtha died in 2010, and earmarks have been banned. Now, the seat is held by a Republican backbencher named Keith Rothfus. “We have not had an influx of any federal money that has assisted us since January,” Liston said. Even just a part of the $1 trillion infrastructure package that Trump once talked about would help considerably, he added.

obama tried a infrastructure package, but their GOP leadership said no. why would they pass one, now? especially with revenue about to tank due to the tax plan they are trying to pass?

Quote:

And so Johnstown and surrounding Cambria County, whiter, poorer and less educated than America overall, was famished for the message Trump delivered in person at War Memorial Arena last October. “Your government betrayed you, and I’m going to make it right,” he told them. “We’re putting your miners back to work,” he told them. “Your jobs will come back under a Trump administration,” he told them. “Your steel will come back,” he told them.

Got sold a dream. but racist whites will tell you that they are superior to minorities.

them believing this nonsense certainly doesn't aid their beliefs.

Quote:

“Border security.” But there’s no wall yet. “No fault of his,” the man said.

What else? “Getting rid of Obamacare.” But he hasn’t. “Well, he’s tried to.”

What else? “Defunding Planned Parenthood.” But he didn’t. “Not his fault again,” the man said.

I asked for his name. “Bill K.,” he said. He wouldn’t give me his last name. “I don’t trust you,” he said.

Nothing is ever Trump's fault. Trump has been placed into the oval and has provided no leadership, no accountability. He blames others and takes no blame himself, while doing absolutely nothing but entertaining the sheep at one of his cult rallies.

Quote:

So many people in so many other areas of the country watch with dismay and existential alarm Trump’s Twitter hijinks, his petty feuds, his penchant for butting into areas where the president has no explicit, policy-relevant role. All of that only animates his supporters here. For them, Trump is their megaphone. He is the scriptwriter. He is a singularly effective, intuitive creator of a limitless loop of grievance and discontent that keeps them in absolute lockstep.

This right here is something i went hard at Ted about. and while i didn't mean to be disrespectful toward you, Ted, i still believe in what i said.

The fact is so many people voted for this guy for no other reason than what people RIGHT HERE ON THE BOARD have claimed: for no other reason than it will tick off liberals.

that is beyond pathetic, and trump supporters have weakened our nation for no other reason than pettiness and immaturity. that they are using Trump for no other reason than to say things that are borderline disgusting, divisive, and borderline racist says a lot about a lot of Trump supporters...

oh wait:

Quote:

“Niggers for life,” Schilling said.

“For life,” McCabe added.

how did i know this was coming?

i've said it before and ill say it again. people can say what they want about hillary, but conservatives threw a hissy fit when she told the god honest trump: there's a percentage of trump supporters who are a basket of deplorables.

and the more time we spend in a trump presidency, the more obvious that becomes.

I was listening to an interview a while back, and this guy made a great point: we all should be glad Trump won, because America was becoming complacent to the disgustingness growing in the shadows. People started thinking that the fight against racism, gender and LBGT discrimination was gaining more ground than it was.

and contrary to popular belief, trump supporters made this election, and his term, just as much about social issues as liberals did. The Trump presidency was nothing more than a giant hissy fit through by conservatives who felt their superiority weakened.

people were willing to be sold a dream because thats all they have, left. they don't care that the people that screw there communities over are white like them. they don't care that the opioid crisis is because of people that look like them. they have been convinced that minorities are the problem. the leechers, the takers, and that illegals are to blame for much of everything.

Trump supporters scare me more than Trump. because it's now become an ideology. Trump supporters are not the same as conservatives.

do to policies, social beliefs, etc, i have more to fear from a Trump supporter than i do a muslim terrorist.

and unlike Trump, they aren't going anywhere.

Come on 40. You know that anybody that doesn't agree with a Liberal is a racist. Didn't you ever hear the saying that the reason Liberals are always after your money is because they are to stupid to earn their own. Guys like PFD hate everybody, America, military, cops and probably themselves.

Oh, and I forgot to mention - his pick to head the Justice Department was an avowed racist who was denied a federal judge position because he was found to be an avowed racist.

You are talking about Jeff Sessions who passed his confirmation through Congress?

The Jeff Sessions who said this...

In 1986, Sessions defended himself against accusations of racism. “I am not the Jeff Sessions my detractors have tried to create,” he told the very same Senate Judiciary Committee he now sits on. “I am not a racist. I am not insensitive to blacks.”

And he told Stanley-Becker this summer: “Racism is totally unacceptable in America. Everybody needs to be treated fairly and objectively.”

But you say he is an avowed racist? Avowed? Admitted?

And O.J. said he didn't kill his wife. Do you believe that?

Sessions once claimed that his only problem with the KKK was that they smoked marijuana (he's admitted on record to having said so), and in 1986 was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama, and became the second person in U.S. history to be rejected for the federal judiciary, on the grounds that he was deemed to hold racist views.

I just provided concrete facts. You provided two quotes by Sessions claiming he wasn't racist.

Serious question - why do you do this to yourself? By now you have to know you getting embarrassed is coming every time, right?

And I have a lot more respect for YOU than I do many on this board.

Nothing wrong with public schools, either.

The problem is with those that think they are "elite" because of their job.

What is elitist about laughing at the irony of someone for misspelling "too" while trying to call others stupid?

If it's some random to/too spelling error in the middle of a post, sure, that's cheap.

But when you do it while trying to call other people stupid? C'mon, you're asking for it, and would've been mocked at all of the public schools I attended.

Here's how it was, and, for the most part, is:

We have 1 school system. I attended Kindergarten at the elementary school. I attended first grade at/in a different building. I attended 2-5 grade at the same school I attended K.

I attended 6-8th grade at a different location, but same school. High school was back at the building I attended k and 2-5 - just a different side of the school.

Today? Our district still has 3 separate buildings.

K-4 in one building. 5-8 in a separate building, and 9-12 in a different building.

Small town America dude - you'd love it if you lived here.

So, to answer your question, yes, you sound like an elitist, and no, I didn't go to a one room school like on Little House. Shows what you know about small town America.

You could, if you wanted, look up our school district. Very good, really. (unless you pull up the last "state" report card. We didn't show enough "improvement" according to their standards. But their standards include inner city schools - and improvement means getting .........ah, hell, I won't get into it.)

Very good school district. I can't help where I was born. Very good school, very good athletics.

No.

I went to 1 public school - at different locations. Just as did everyone.

We didn't have 2-10 elementary schools that fed into 1-4 middle schools, that fed into 1-2 high schools.

1 school district, that had separate buildings.

Can you grasp that?

I too had a similar experience. Attended K-4 at one school. Then my family moved us to a different school district. More rural. There I finished 4th grade in one town. 5th grade in a different town. 6th grade in another. Then 7-8 in the same town as 6th grade, different building. Then 9-10 in a different town. From there I went to a vocational school for 11-12 in a different town further away.
Lots of rural bus rides.
From my understanding they’ve consolidated much of the district into one campus now.
It took four towns to make my district. Small farm towns. I only graduated with 98 kids in my class.

I think you are dumb right now.

Come on out to Archbold. I'll give you a tour.

There is 1 elementary building that all kids in the district attend. There is 1 middle school that all kids attend. There is 1 h.s. that all kids attend.

It really is that simple.

See, you're probably thinking city schools. You are thinking "big community/city" schools.

You are also thinking like Hillary did - those small communities don't matter - they're just middle america and they don't count or matter. You're so wrong.

Maybe for you a school district is composed of multiple schools. Here, we have multiple buildings, but 1 school. And I dare say, that's the norm around here.

Take your "norm" and shove it. Your "norm" isn't necessarily the norm for others.

So you have one principal for three buildings? Interesting set up, but it does make me realize a lot about you.

Pull your foot out of your mouth before you look dumber than you are.

1 superintendent, 3 different principals, and various "attendants"

Sorry man, you must live in a bad place. Here, it's pretty darn good. We even educate our kids and don't spend all our money on overhead and bitching about wanting more.

Very weird, Arch. I went to http://www.archbold.k12.oh.us/ on a whim and saw that they list three different schools on their home page. You should contact the web developer and let them know that those aren't schools, those are buildings.

This ranks as one of the more bizarre discussions I've seen on here. Just because they are called Archbold Elem., Archbold Middle, and Archbold High, they are 3 different schools.. each with its own principal and administration.. and even if you do consider it one school.. that is highly unusual and I grew up in a pretty small town.....

Okay, so now you want to get technical? Fine.

Many areas have 2-3-4 or more elementary schools. Those feed into 2-3 middle schools, which then feed into 1 or 2 high schools.

In urban areas, you might have 10 elementary schools or more feeding into 5-8 middle schools which feed into 2-4 high schools.

That isn't how it is here. I'm glad you visited the web site. You got the right one. They absolutely do list 3 different schools. An elementary on LaFayette street, a middle school on Stryker St, and a High school on LaFayette St.

Weird.........1 district, 1 school. 3 different buildings. That's impossible, right? Nope, it's right in line with what I said.
