There is a good chance he will not be playing for KC next year.
http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Where-will-Alex-Smith-land-next-year-4133430.php
Where will he land?
One thing about Smith he wins games. Another thing he doesn't turn the ball over. Also he is accurate and he gets the ball out quickly. Rarely gets sacked.
What's not to like? For some reason he is "considered" a game manager and can't go downfield.
If you look around the NFL the "bomb passes" don't happen all that much. Smith is a capable guy and should have no trouble starting for some team.
Would the Browns go after him? I doubt it.
This may sound cruel to some but if Sashi is still calling the shots I believe he wants to prove he can pick a quarterback. Maybe he can. Maybe he can not.
But Cousins and Smith may be available. Both have proven they can play. Would they be considerations?

I would sign him or Kirk.
Draft the top QB and have Kizer and new QB sit and learn.

This year Alex is showing that he can go down the field.
He'll be a great pickup for whoever gets him.

I wanted him when he was signed by KC.
A lot of the responses I got from that is that he was a game manager and that if he were that good, why would San Fran let him go? I would have been thrilled to have him then and would be thrilled to have him now.
I think the BEST route would be to have talent evaluators that could commit to drafting a QB high in the first round of the draft and be successful at it.
But I've seen zero reason to believe they can accomplish that.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I was also saying that the Browns should go after Smith when he was available last time.
Very few posters agreed w/us.
The biggest arguments against him were him not fitting in w/Norv's down the field offense, being a game manager, and not having a strong arm.
I've always thought he was an underrated qb who has not received his just due.

He can't beat the Steelers. Not good.
I'd give Kirk Cousins a blank check though.

Denver, Jacksonville, NY Jets, Miami, Arizona, Minnesota ...

For whatever reason, he's winning now.
If he can do that here, that's more than any other QB we've had since Derek Anderson had such a good year.
We got the Picks next draft to grab the future if Kizer doesn't prove he's the guy. I think we all love Kessler because he's a hard worker, smart and a in general, a good kid, but he's not the answer and Hogan was kinda neat to watch, but he's not the answer.
So, yeah,if you can get Smith, draft a top QB, let that drafted QB and Kizer sit behind Smith and let's role.
I mean, it's not like we don't have the CAP space LOL

I'm all for that plan .. BUT will Smith be in favor of it too? I mean, of course we can offer him a LOT of money for 2 years or whatever, but he can probably get a GOOD chunk elsewhere and not be here

And that's the big question. Not only for Smith but for Cousins as well.
While it may be hard to see for some fans, if you were in their shoes and had much better options, would you choose the Browns?

If Alex does not resign, I see him going to Denver, to the SB and the HOF
I don't see him signing with the Browns... not for all the money in the world

That question is hard to answer.
Regardless of what some may think Hue Jackson has a good reputation among players and within the NFL circles.
In addition although the Browns have not won games they have a young roster, mucho cap space, and a bunch of high draft picks.
With the right quarterback and some well selected skill position draft picks (receivers/RB) they could get better quickly. And pay the right quarterback.

Honestly, and with all the respect, I think very few people think Hue is a coach that can win the SB... And, IMHO, there is no reason we should judge the Coach lower than you judge a QB... I think Hue is an average coach at best... He's not on the top 16 coaches in the league for sure. If anything, I think we have more or less established that neither the QB's we have, nor the Coach are SB material... I will gladly be surprised in either case....

While it may be hard to see for some fans, if you were in their shoes and had much better options, would you choose the Browns? In sports as in real life, there are people who take the safe way. Others, however, love a challenge and have the ego to become a "hero" by taking the underdog to the top. Personally, I much prefer the latter...

Don't forget Pittsburgh. I hope we would consider anybody not named Kizer, Kessler, or . . . well, you get the idea. The idea of a reliable, accurate, proven veteran presence in the huddle is just daunting. Is this a cruel joke?

Well, if indeed the Browns sign a vet, one has to take into account they (Cousins/Smith) are successful in a different offense than the Browns run. The offense needs either the right QB who can excell in it, or the offense needs to change to fit whatever QB they sign.
I'm of the opinion that it's easier to adapt an offense to a QB, than to find a perfect fit for the offense you run.

I'd give Kirk Cousins a blank check though.
Has Cousins gotten this good, or has the standard for what is considered good QB play been lowered this far?? It wasn't all that long ago that there wasn't a sane soul in existence that would prefer Cousins over even a guy like Hoyer, and now we're talking blank checks??

Has Cousins gotten this good, or has the standard for what is considered good QB play been lowered this far?? A mix: - He's gotten a lot better (not elite, but a solid B-to-B+) - The standard has dropped - If we could get our hands on a solid B QB, we will have to pay like he's an A+.

I wouldn't give Cousins a blank check, but he is pretty damn good. He has become one of the better qbs in the league for the last few years in a row.
His performances recently are almost incredible. Four of his five starting offensive linemen have been lost to injury and I think a backup or two has been hurt. He also lost his Pro Bowl TE in Jordan Reed, yet he somehow rallied to them victory against Seattle's tough D.
He's going to get paid! LOL

Smith’s going no where if he keeps playing like this .. they’d be MORONS to let him go ...
Plus Reid loves him ...
I’m no fan of Reid’s .. i think hes extremely overrated ... but theres no way hes going to let Smith go at this point for an unproven rookie ...
I have not been as impressed as most with Cousins .. this year hes won me over ... hes damm good ..

You are probably right, but the Chiefs gave up 27th overall pick and a third-round pick in this past draft and another first round pick in 2018 to get Mahommes.
I don't think they give up that much if they don't plan on him playing in the next year or two. LOL

There are a bunch of articles that are the subject. Most believe he is gone after this year. But that depends on how Andy Reid wants to go forward.
Mahomes awaits. He was drafted to take over.

I agree. I do not see Alex Smith being traded by the Chiefs this coming offseason. I think 2019 is the most likely time Mahomes takes over, not next season.

I'm hoping either Kizer develops or they take another QB #1 + pick up a vet somewhere to mentor our young guys ...

I never was enamored by Alex Smith...he actually has shocked me on how well he has been playing.
But he is missing that something??? If we continue building our Defense he would do well with us. He's a perfect QB for a team with a Championship Defense!
Why probably somebody mentioned Denver...although I think Denver's D is on the down slide!

LOL I agree ... but the situation has changed with Smith this year ... he’s alsways been IMO a game manager who didn’t throw downfield much at all .. smart, accuratte QB that didn’t turn the ball over ... This year .. hes throwing it downfield a lot more and is not a game manager anymore .. hes been very very aggressive this year ... So thats changed IMO ... and sitting a guy for 2 years isn’t the dumbest thing in the world ... U could be right ... we’ll see ..

I do think that KC will move on from Smith because you don't give up as much as they did for a rookie qb and never play him. However, I think you are Milk are probably right in that they are going to sit Mahommes out one more year. I'm not sure about this, but I think Smith's contract expires in 2018. But again, I'm not sure. In the end, I think your take makes more sense than mine did. His play this year probably buys him one more year in KC.

Just conversing also ... not sure what u meant by that so i thought i’d make it clear ... You’ve taught me a lot over the years ... hopefully once in awhile learn from me ... I really can’t wait for Mahommes to take over .. hes got a ton of arm talent .. they say hes smart and loves the game .. could be an unbeatable combo ... I’ve said it a bunch lately ... gonna love watching the young qb’s develop and seeing who ends up where ... Really bummed about Watson ... that sucks ass ... hes a better person than football player ... Now for the rest of this year i’m down to Wentz, Dak, my boy Mitch (who there handcuffing way to much IMO) and Kizer ... Guess thats more than i thought .. *L* .. I used to watch every game every week .. no desire to anymore ... but i tape all those guys games and watch them .. if i can’t record them all .. i watch on directtv shortcuts on my computer ...

Andy Reid and Matt Nagy are two of the most innovative offensive minds in the NFL. They have figured out the best ways to use Alex Smith. I don't know if I trust our offensive staff to do the same. With that said, I would still try and sign Alex Smith if he was available. He is miles better than anything we have. I don't think he would ever sign with us.

What I meant by it was that I wasn't disagreeing w/your take earlier. I was just adding the cost of Mahommes. Two firsts and a 3rd. He's going to get his shot.
But again, I think you and Milk are right about Smith getting one more year. There were talks of trading him in August, but he way he played [just like you said] probably changed that.
I learn from you. I'm always trying to learn.
