Josh Rosen the gifted kid.
Josh comes from very successful professional parents. His father is a orthopedic spine surgeon and was a nationally ranked ice skater who almost qualified for the Winter Olympics in the 1970s. His mother is a Quaker who is a journalist and was the captain of the Princeton lacrosse team.
At twelve Rosen was a nationally ranked tennis player. Coming out of high school he was one of the most highly recruited players in the country. He also carried a 4.3 GPA.
Going to UCLA he is playing for Jim Mora the former Atlanta Falcons head coach. For the most part UCLA plays a pro-set offense.
Right off the bat the arm talent is crystal clear. We are talking elite arm talent. This guy can make any throw in the book and make it look easy.
He is an NFL prototype player. Plays under center and is schooled in NFL concepts. When you watch film on him it looks like you are watching a NFL player playing the NFL game.
He makes NFL type throws all over the place. He drops back from under center, surveys the field, and fits the ball into tight windows. He shows patience to let the play develop. He displays the ability to see the whole field. He doesn't stare down receivers and can go to secondary targets. He keeps his eyes downfield constantly. He will check down or throw it away when called for.
He can throw on the run but he is a pocket player. Like many before him with his kind of arm talent he will force the ball at times. You can tell he believes in his arm. That of course is a two edged sword that can cut both ways.
Maybe because of his tennis background he has what I call smart feet. Meaning he gets his feet into the right position without thought. It all fits together with his throwing motion.
Some may disagree but he could play in the NFL today.
He is outspoken and will say what he thinks. His personality may rub some people the wrong way. Think Jay Cutler. At the same time he is respected as a teammate and considered a hard worker by his coaches.
There is no denying Rosen's ability to throw a football. You would have to be blind not to see that. Also coming from the UCLA offense it is easier to project him into the NFL.
There are some negative notes about him and his commitment to football. He is a intelligent guy with many interests outside of football and has stated plans for when he decides to give the game up. So there is a label out there that he is not a football junkie.
I don't like to get into that type of thing much because those types of comments are not verifiable.
What I see is a talented young player that is custom made to play the NFL game. At this time I will not say he is the guy I would select first.

If Darnold stays in school Rosen is easy #1 for me

Thoughts on Rosen:
-Has tremendous arm talent. Natural accuracy and very good strength.
-His ball is very easy to catch.
-Has awesome mechanics for a young player. Has great footwork against pressure.
-Not a good processor. Despite playing in a pro system, he can be late on a lot of throws. This can cause an overthrow and easy pass breakups.
-Played for a team that lacked any true talent. I believe the only target of his that has been drafted was our own Jordan Peyton.
-The injuries scare me. Has had a knee problem and now has had a concussion. He also hurt his shoulder once before too.
-Is the perfect size for an NFL QB. Like someone molded him out of clay.
Rosen, to me, is the safest bet of the class. His natural QB talent is obvious. I dont think he will ever be Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, but Eli Manning. Top 15 guy who may have a few top 10 seasons.
He would be the safe and easy pick to make at #1.

I've been saying for awhile now that I'd take Rosen even if Darnold were in the draft (you listed many of the reasons above). He's been in a horrible situation at UCLA.

Is Rosen coming out in the draft? I would go with a strong yes on that. It's not 100%, but I would be shocked if he did not. He's been getting killed at UCLA for three years now. He's smart enough to know he should get out and get his money.

Like actually go to school or he didn't have any other choices? Also, I think Jim Mora is back next year (not that means anything with regards to Rosen as the two aren't exactly warm towards each other). Mora has a $15 million buyout if he's fired.

I saw Josh Rosen play live this year vs. Colorado at the Rose Bowl. Below are my thoughts.
- The kid has a huge arm and can really let it rip. He made a couple of throws in some really tight windows I thought were going to be picked/ deflected.
- He held on to the ball a little too long a few times.
- He isn't that mobile overall ( he isn't Kosar either.)
- Sometimes he zings a ball in there when he needs to add a little more touch or finesse. ( This led to a couple of drops).

I saw big mentioned the processing thing, but can either of you expound on how long he holds the ball. I have only watched him casually and that was last year. Seems like he took a lot of sacks.
Was/is the OL horrible or does he hold the ball too long?

Was/is the OL horrible or does he hold the ball too long? I dont have the stats, but he does seem to hold onto the ball long, rather than a ton of talent issue on the offensive line. McDermott was drafted last year, his left tackle, not sure about this year but I dont think the line is particularly gteat.

McDermott was drafted last year, his left tackle, not sure about this year but I dont think the line is particularly gteat. Their offensive line has gotten him killed over the last two years. They haven't had anyone all that good.

All 5 said Darnold. Scratching my head on that one. It was Daniel Jeremiah on NFL.com. Two of the five referenced Darnold's "it" factor which is not a real thing (basically every QB ever has had someone write about their "it" factor http://grantland.com/features/it-factor-nfl-quarterback-intangibles/). Darnold is a better athlete than Rosen and has a better arm, but he is also somewhat of a project. The NFL execs probably don't like Rosen's off the field comments much either. I would also like to say that I think the USC coaching staff is in over their head and mismanaging Darnold. Helton basically got hired because USC was such a mess and no one else wanted anything to do with the school. He started Max Browne over Darnold last year and then Darnold came in and saved his job.
