That is great news. Personally, I don't expect to see Bentley involved for a while this season, if at all. However, if he truly is recovering well, I have to think that he could realistically be ready by the middle of this season, and if not, definitely for next season.

I'd much rather he take things slowly and come back at 100% (or as close as he's ever going to be). I know he's eager to come back, but better to wait and then have a long career than hurry back and get hurt again.

But, great news anyway!

"Dr. Warren is the expert in his field, he's the last person who operated on me and he's told me I'm fine," said Bentley. "It doesn't really matter to me what another doctor says at this point."

Bentley said he will begin working out individually and probably won't be ready for contact for about five weeks. He said he hopes to play in the final preseason game and if all goes as planned, be ready for the opener.

Theres something about this that doesn't rub me right .. seems he has his plan without regards to what the team thinks or wants ... it just doesn't sit well with me ...

hopefully we'll have sumptin go our way and he'll be good to go .. bit i aint holding my breath on this one ...

What does it matter?

Hank doesn't play tackle and Shaffer does.. and he's getting big bucks to do it too..

Money has nothing to do with it. You put your best team on the field, not your highest paid team. Hank outplayed Shaffer last year, and he is a better player than Mckinney.

You know, Diam, I was kind of thinking the same thing. But, this could very well be that he's just excited to get back and he doesn't foresee any problems.

I think Savage would be smart to get him another physical. Bentley shouldn't have a problem with it because if he's truly ready to resume play, no doctor should find a problem.

You may be reading too much into it diam. He probably is excited by what the doctor said and did a phone interview with May Kay Cosmetics right after he got the clearance.

Honestly i think he is gun shy of the Browns medical staph lol. I mean he went to the Giants dr for surgery went to arizona for rehab. His trip to the Browns Drs damn near killed him. So i can see why he isnt eager to meet with any of them and probably thinks very little of their opinion.

My feeling is your right, he's pumped, I mean at one point people were telling him he'd never play again and to get ready for life after football, and now doctors are telling him to give it a try, so he's like a 80 year old man in a strip club with a new bottle of viagra

U and Lamp and since79 could very well be right ... could just be me reading to much into this .. but the entire thing starting with his rehabbing away from the site and a few other things I've heard and the way this sounds just rubs me the wrong way ... hopefully it's nothing .. and hopefully this is just another of many positive things in LA's potential return ...

WOW...This kinda surprises me...

I'm tellin' ya right now...What we SHOULD do is put him on a light work regime in camp...One a day practice...Get him ready...And DO NOT PUP HIM...If we do he CANNOT practice until after week 6...At which time we have thru week 9 to ACTIVATE him...

Keep him practicing and just claim him as INACTIVE every week thru game 6...THEN get him ready for 2 weeks going into game 7 (BYE WEEK)...That's an additional FOUR MONTHS of working without football contact but it gets him READY for week 7...

I'm tellin' ya' folks...This dude's STARTING on this line at some point prior to mid season...

GEEEEEZZZZZZ...Steinbach/Thomas/Bentley...ALL IN A YEAR!!!!!!!!!

He'll get atleast one more from the team's physicians.

All good signs, but I will remain skeptical... saves me from getting my heart ripped out (again) if he can't make it. Every snap he takes will be a blessing for this team. Let's hope he can play at a high level. He's still got the smarts for it.

Browns general manager Phil Savage said last week that Bentley must also pass the Browns' physical by team physician Dr. Anthony Miniaci and perhaps that of a third doctor before being cleared to practice.

Hmmm lets see....

"Dr. Warren is the expert in his field, he's the last person who operated on me and he's told me I'm fine," said Bentley. "It doesn't really matter to me what another doctor says at this point."

Wondeer what will happen if Dr.Miniaci says he's not ready?

Then he won't play. Players have to pass a team physical ..... not one by the doctor of their choice.

I'm sure that there are liability issues if the Browns allow him back on the field and he suffers an injury that could cripple him. (or worse) There were reports that the doctors considered amputation a while back ...... so I'm sure the Browns will take no chances.

If Bentley doesn't pass the team's physical, he can possibly request a 2nd opinion from an outside specialist, if I remember correctly.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. However, I'm not sure if there are league rules against doing something like this. I would think most teams don't try it because it eats up a roster spot. But, if the Browns think it's worth it, and there's no rule against it, then they should by all means go for it.

I did check the last 2 or 3 posts and there was no mention of him getting clearance. Oh well, foiled again, Olive. That's one hurdle for LCB now the really tough part comes with physical with Brown's. I'm sure they don't want a lawsuit and the tests will be extensive and thorough. I wish him all the best, and will control my wishes until I see him in his first game as a Brown.

All the speculation in the world means nothing... there's only one guy that knows if he can play or not and that's Bentley. Only he knows how strong his knee is and if he thinks it will hold up. If he didn't think it was ready, then I would have to think he would be talking about playing down the road a ways instead of the home opener. Especially knowing how much it means to the Browns and the fans.

Move over Fraley.... or better yet, go sit down, McKinney....
come get ya some, squeelers.

just clicking...

Great news, Bentley will be a little rusty and must work himself into the starting OL but he will be there and available.

One thing we are all ignoring as I haven't seen anyone mention it.

Yes, he passed his physical in NY but what kind of "PASSING" grade was it when they state.

Cannot Hit for 5 weeks. Basically thats all of training camp and all but one Pre-season game. He still has Re-hab to do actually I don't expect him to pass our Physicals cause ours would clear him to participate in Training Camp...we won't fail him for the season just have him go to the class room stuff...do the walk through stuff. Get into shape regimen stuff and continue his rehab.

I think we will start him off by putting him on the PUP list and get him as close to 100% by week 6.

This year I see him strictly at the RG position or at depth for the Interior. Next season he will compete and if healthy take over the Center position from Fraley.

I'm think I agree with you on this also, Eotab. We should all proceed with cautious optimism as they say and let the chips fall where they may.

BTW, re your sig - how about Franchise Left Guard - Steiner is no slouch and can play other positions in OL is pressed upon. JMHO

ahhhh...not so fast my friend....I believe were gonna be plesently suprised with Hank, He's got a full season under his belt here, he's happy here, he's coming in training camp from the get go, I for one like Hanks deminer and tuffness, he's a fighter and a scrapper, not saying Bently's not, but with Hank at Center & Bently at guard, thats not a bad combination either..

it kinda nice to have these type of problems

if LCB fails the team physical what happens? Does he go on IR or PUP or will an injury settlement be offered ?
If he passes and he is not 100% what happens? Does he go inactive for a certain number of games until he is ready or CAN he go back on the PUP?
What happens if it's detrmined he can play but never at the same level? Can he be cut as soon as the same day he passes the physical? It would free cap room to sign BQ and JT!

First off, the rookie pool is totally different than the regular salary cap, so Bentley's cut would have no effect on that.

I believe Bentley has the right to file an appeal with the union, where he can get a 2nd opinion. Likely he's going to go to that guy from the Giants he's been seeing. That guy gives his info to the team, then the two sides can haggle it out. If he fails the team physical, I'm guessing the team does one of two things, A.) They put him on the PUP and re-evaluate him later in the season, or B.) If the team's doctor feels the injury is extensive enough to threaten Bentley's career, they will start discussing an injury settlement.

What is the "depth" thing that you speak of. I'm not familiar with this term.

I am absolutely stunned by this news. I can't believe what this guy is doing. I have gone from being a skeptic (out of pity, not spite) to a big fan of LCB.

depends on what the team doctors say.
And how the Browns use that information.

Yes & No... but we're so far under the cap that it's moot.

If the cap is 100Million and the Rookie cap for is $5 Million, we still have $100Million to spend, but we cannot spend any more than $5 Million of that $100 Million in the current season on signing our rookies.

They are not totally separate, one is a subset of the other; a limit within a limit, but the Secondary limit has no limiting effect on the Primary.

If we were hurting for cap space and had only $3 Million in cap space, but our Rookie Pool was $5 Million, then yes, cutting a Vet contract that would free overall cap space could help us sign our rookies. We, however, are not even close to being in that sort of a situation, so it's all moot.

And not trying to be rude, but I wouldn't call Bentley (or Baxter) for that matter coming back as "depth." Both guys had serious career threatening injuries. They need to be treated with kid gloves. If they are healthy, yes that's depth, but right now it's just bodies.

Well, I think that we're calling them "depth" under the assumption that they'll be able to play at a high level, if not at 100%. I don't think anyone would consider them just being on the field as depth.
