I had a fairly long reply to peen, but the thread was locked due to length. Thus, I decided to start a new thread on the topic. Here is my reply to peen:

Your post is reasonable. I want to comment on some of the guys you brought up.

--I don't know about the language in Sashi's contract. Here is an article that was written right after he was hired. Please note his prior qualifications and see if they match-up w/his current title and responsibilities.

Who is Sashi Brown, the Cleveland Browns' new executive VP of football operations?

Sashi Brown.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Browns' new executive VP of football operations has been a man on the rise in the sports business world. Brown was named to the Sports Business Journal's "Forty Under 40" list in 2015.

Brown, named the team's executive VP of football operations on Sunday, was hired as the executive vice president/general counsel by the Browns in January 2013. This season marked Brown's 11th in the NFL. Brown will have "ultimate say over the roster," according to Haslam.

Brown has overseen the team's salary cap, negotiations of player contracts and worked closely with fired general manager Ray Farmer.

"Sashi, I believe, is the right person to do this for the Cleveland Browns," owner Jimmy Haslam said on Sunday. "He's been in the NFL for 10-plus years, has been involved in the cap and has been heavily involved in our football administration and operations for the last year or two. He's very smart, very organized, good at systems and processes and an outstanding team player. He's also very strategic so we will use those skills and working for him will be a GM whose primary job will be talent acquisition."

Brown's role with the team on the business end prior to his promotion includes contract negotiation, government affairs, employment matters, insurance and risk management, licensing and intellectual property issues and litigation management.

"A challenge for NFL teams has been finding people that can bridge the gaps between business and football operations," Brown told ClevelandBrowns.com in April. "Finding synergies and ways to work with people on both sides are unique and can provide tremendous value."

Brown was born in Boston and received his B.A. in communications from Hampton University. He attended Harvard Law School.

Brown's most recent football job prior to the Browns was with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he served as senior vice president and general counsel. He played a role in negotiating the naming rights deal for EverBank Field.

Prior to that, Brown worked in the Washington D.C.-based law firm Wilmer, Cutler, Pickering, Hale and Dorr as part of the business transactions group.

--Here is an excerpt from an article that written right after our final game last year. It contains quotes from Sashi about whether or not he would add an experienced NFL person to his staff:

Quote:
Brown led a season wrap-up news conference on Jan. 2 and said he will not add an experienced talent evaluator to the personnel staff.

During a postgame meeting in Pittsburgh on Jan. 1, team owner Jimmy Haslam said the decision on whether to create a position for an experienced executive would be up to Brown.

“We don’t (need one),” Brown said. “We’re going to look to add some players that are talented. Other than that, on the personnel staffing side, we feel good about our group. Andrew (Vice president of player personnel Andrew Berry), pro department, college department has done a good job this year and they’ll continue to work hard through this offseason with our coaching staff to put some more young talent on this roster.”

The comments from Brown, Chief Strategy Officer Paul DePodesta and Jackson were amazingly upbeat considering a day earlier the Browns lost to the Steelers, 27-24, to finish with the worst record (1-15) in the history of the franchise.

“It’s one thing to have a disappointing season, which we had,” DePodesta said. “It’s another thing to have a disappointing season that’s en route to something better. I think that’s what we all feel like this year was.”

Browns hire Ryan Grigson ... hey, wait a second

Ryan Grigson has landed on his feet in a surprising place.

The Browns announced Wednesday that Grigson, the former Colts general manager, has been hired as Cleveland's senior personnel executive. Grigson will answer to Cleveland football czar Sashi Brown.

Grigson, 45, joins the Browns following a five-year stint as GM in Indianapolis. He was fired in January and replaced by Chris Ballard.

"Ryan brings valuable experience to our personnel group," Brown said in a team release. "He was raised as a road-scout and has been evaluating talent in this league for almost 20 years. We place a premium on that experience and on his passion for football. Ryan has much to offer to any personnel department and we are pleased that he chose to join our staff."

Grigson and the Browns have ... history. In 2013, Grigson pulled the trigger on the infamous trade that sent a first-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for running back Trent Richardson. Richardson was a massive bust for the Colts and the move left a permanent yolk stain on Grigson's grill. The Browns did their part to minimize the bad PR by taking Johnny Manziel with the pick they gained.

Neither player is currently in the NFL.

It's perhaps eyebrow-raising that the Browns would now hire the man they once fleeced so publicly. This is the Browns though. They do this stuff, even when they're in the midst of one of their bi-annual cycles of optimism.

What's that, Pat McAfee?

Grigson had well-publicized battles w/his players and coaches in Indy. Many were very happy when he was fired. I have wondered if his presence adds to the contentious atmosphere between the FO and the coaching staff. He sure was that way in Indy.

--Andrew Berry was once employed by Grigson in Indy. He is another Harvard grad who has a bachelor's degree in Economics and a Master's in Computer Science. He was hired as a scouting assistant in 2009 and was later promoted to Pro Scouting Coordinator. He did not have any experience scouting collegiate players.

--I think you know the Depo story.

we focus on Sashi and Depo a lot, but not much has been said about Berry. He is the least impressive to me. What did he do so well in Indy? We might need to improve on his position.. He's the football guy in the room. Pretty weak IMO. He needs to be the big voice in the draft room, but I get the feeling he is a wallflower.

peen...I did point that fact out concerning Berry's experience level at Indy...
When I did point it out, you and the front office lovers told me how wrong I was and you pointed out how experienced Berry was as a scout.

It seems that you are attempting to make Berry the fall guy questioning his experience now... but the truth is, Sashi has final say over all roster moves. As I have attempted to point out nearly 2 years ago, not only is Berry's experience level questionable,  this entire front office is weak on football experience.

Better late than never, I guess....

Hue's record as a HC is now 9-33. He passed on Wentz and fell in love with RG3.

The FO has accumulated 13 draft picks for the next draft after they promised to build the team through the draft.

With all of that out there, I ask: Who is actually doing the job they were hired to do?

I don't get the "either or". Both have screwed up plenty. Both have done good things. Both are learning on the job as they go. Neither are all that qualified, both have about the same amount of experience at their current jobs (though Hue obviously has more experience in the NFL), and both have shown serious lapses in judgement executing their jobs, so neither have been great up to this point. But it's who we have, and the team is improving. It may not seem like it based on the record, but it is. Both the FO and Hue need to STFU and do their jobs. (Hue's bitchiness and thinly disguised barbs are getting old.) The FO must get this off season right. The fans need to have patience, at least for another year or two. The team needs to start winning. Next year. (Though a win or two this year would be nice.) That what all this boils down to. IMHO.

The Browns franchise is SCREAMING ... "THE BROWNS NEED A FOOTBALL GM" leading the football side of this franchise....

...NOT A LAWYER..
...NOT A BASEBALL GUY..
...NOT A SCOUT..

Understand this..I'm not calling for anyone to be fired. I want a real GM with a football background to bridge and coordinate what these guys are good at. A football GM making the football decisions.

I think you are asking the wrong question. Qualifications on paper are nice. However, who is actually performing their job better?

FO-Job: Add talent to the roster. Results: "Hit rate" in the Draft seems in line with the rest of the league. Signed Collins, an in his prime Pro Bowler.

HC-Job: Actively make the players on the roster better, manage time, make in-game decisions.
Results: You tell me. Just looking at Hue's "specialty", Kessler appears to have gotten worse b/w year one and two with him.

Both have undoubtedly had their mistakes. It appears that the FO has had more successes. Some of that perception is most likely due to actually seeing Hue "work" every game day, so his "mistakes" are more in your face. You can see them as they happen. The FO's "mistakes" are off camera.

What successes can you point to for Hue?

Fire both... That solves the problem.

IMHO, Hue is a mediocre HC, FO is not that much better, but I understand the continuity argument.

I was all for Hue to finish the season, but not anymore, I think Gregg should have a chance to show if he is the right man for the job.

As far as positives with Hue, I think the coaching staff does a nice job developing our young talent.

I think a lot of these players will be appreciative of Hue with the work he's done with them. It's just too bad he can't win a game.

Keep the other staff, just fire Hue. Promote Gregg to HC for the rest of the season.

Could we have the 2015 roster with 2 drafts?

MG... that's the only doubt I have, the other positions were better in 2015.

We got better on the DL, but that was never a problem... For the rest, most of the position were already young and IMHO they were better players.

We lost Mack and Schwartz...and Haden (although I never liked him very much)

I've heard the developing talent thing, but on the offensive side their is not a ton of evidence of it. There is almost no evidence (perhaps "counter evidence") with the position Hue in particular is most focused on, QB.

I do think players like Hue. ...I'm not sure being liked is part of the HC job description, though. Do Bill B's players "like" him? Or is it more respect?

I'm okay with keeping Hue, but I'm tired of the "partisan board politics" of pro-FO vs pro-HC where the claims that one side or the other can do no wrong keep cropping up.

Hue needs to get better. Hue's doing better will help the FO do better (FA/re-signing wise). Haslam giving them time to work will help both. If you're going to give up on a multi-year plan before multiple years have passed, what's the point of making it in the first place?

I asked u in another thread ... i’ll ask U again here ...

Why do u want a lawyer as the ultimate decision maker in ALL PERSONAL DECISIONS .... draft, fa and roster moves .. IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME ...

I dont understand ... its NOT LOGICAL ...

That would be like putting Billicheck in charge of negotiations with your corporate clients/sponsors and vendors .... that would be MORONIC ....

Whats so hard to understand about bringing in someone with ACTUAL FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE as the final decision maker ...

I dont get it ... it makes no sense to me ....

Would u let your dentist perform a medical procedure on U like say a knee scope ... he does have experience in the “medical” field after all .. just because it’s TOTALLY UN-RELATED to the procedure your having is appearantly IRRELIVENT to U ...

Please explain why letting a lawyer make those decisions is smarter than bringing in a “football” guy ... cause i don’t get that one at all ...

And don’t bring Hue into this .. thats IRRELIVENT and a different convo ....

J/C .....

This is the plan in action, right here.

You do not gut a bad team of every ounce of talent it had, and rebuild it to playoff status in 2 years. It just doesn't happen.Brown has actually made some very good choices this far .... but the team still had too many holes. (specifically, and mainly at WR, QB, CB)

They have 6 picks very high in next year's draft. Thank goodness we didn't give away 2 of them for Cincy's backup QB. We have tons of cap space, and hopefully, as the Indians did, when the Browns see some hope on the horizon, they will start spending again on free agents. (and yes, make wiser choices than Britt)

We should be able to add 8 really talented players between the draft and opening free agency next season. This team does have a solid base, with a few real game changers. (and more guys with that kind of potential) I just hope that Haslam doesn't panic and blow things up again.

Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I think you are overlooking the fact that the GM position is about more than just the "on the field" football stuff. It also deals with the business side, and, in the grand scheme of things, football is a business. What do "football guys" know about business? The GM is over both sides of the operation. Is it easier to teach a football guy about business or a business guy about football? Berry is our football guy over the football side. He provides Sashi with the football info. Do you think Sashi is just picking random players without regard to the football peoples' grades? Does scouting have anything to do with negotiating contracts?

There is no perfect GM. Football guys have problems, too.

It wasn't the FO calling a game against the best pass D in the league where we run 66% of the times.

Hue is just a mediocre Head Coach, FO has nothing to do it, actually they have since it is probably one of theirs marvelous decisions.

IMHO, there is no point on keeping Hue here...

I suppose we could ignore outcomes and deflect blame onto the FO instead.

There is plenty of blame to go around. I'm not sure why it upsets you so much when Hue gets his share.

Background and ability/performance don't necessarily go hand and hand.

Some people don't think that where you come from determines where you'll go. Apparently others do.

Or is there more to your argument than "Sashi isn't a football guy, therefor everything is his fault"?

I agree with you on the FO view, just disagree on your defense of Hue.

I think we have seen enough of him.

I can understand giving one more year to the FO (although I don't think it will take us further), because of the continuity argument, providing they draft a QB with the #1 and they cut Gordon and draft a receiver.

I don't dislike the ability the FO has to take hard decisions, I just don't like their bodies drafting philosophy.

This is a game of missmatches, so we need superior talent.

I should have never put the question in there at the end of my original post. I knew it was a mistake right away.

I actually was replying to peen and wanted to address the qualifications/experience of the guys in the FO. I wanted to do so because I wonder if they are qualified to evaluate collegiate personnel and if Sashi should have final say over the roster.

There are a ton of posts all over this board about Hue. I just thought that talking about the qualifications and experience of the guys we have evaluating collegiate talent was a worthwhile conversation. I also think that perhaps it's time to bring in someone w/experience in such matters.

But again, I should have NEVER asked the FO/Hue question. That was dumb on my part.

I think DePodesta and not Sashi is the one evaluating players. I also think the method is not relying on one person, but in a method of evaluation.

I think they are failing miserably though.... But DePodesta is qualified...

Sashi is IMHO doing a very good job in shielding DePodesta, and taking ownership for the hard decisions.

Don't like the Gordon novel.... for that alone I would fire them...for that and for missing so many franchise players.

RG3 could be salvaged
Cody could run a vertical stretch offense in Cleveland no less
Brock
Brock worth repeating twice
Kizer
AJ McCaron we offered up the 33rd pick and 65th picks for McCaron. Folks thats a mid first round pick for him.

this is just unacceptable and I like a lot of the things this front office has done but no, I see how they have tried to fix the most important position on this team and I dont know how the hell they can do it to be honest.

Can we upgrade over the current FO. absolutely
Can we upgrade over the current HC. absolutely

meh.... 0 wins to 3 wins; it as much about who play as who you are on those days.

Those two rosters are pretty much a wash in that list, BUT, we are set up better to get better quickly now whereas we were not before this. Although, I think I like the current DL better than the older one.

This FO had no experience at any of their respective jobs and Sashi had zero experience in personnel. They haven't shown the ability to address the QB position or any skill positions at all. There's nothing in Sashi's resume' that would indicate he has the experience or ability to have control over the 53 man roster. It was a shot in the dark at worst and a highly risky calculated attempt at best. It is what it is, but if you're waiting for anyone to step up to the plate to admit that, don't hold your breath.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

The lawyer in our case is the guy who breaks the tie between Hue and the FO talent evaluators - that's how it's said to be anyway. Someone has to be the tie-breaker...better the lawyer than Jimmy.

If Jimmy decides to change out the tie-breaker guy, I will have no problem with that. Hue passed on Wentz, fell in love with RG3 and was willing to trade Sashi's booty for AJ McCarron. He cannot have final say on the roster OR the QB...not yet anyway.

And what experience does he have to be the deciding factor?

The man who owns the team says he can do it? What can I say to change that?

Should he have over-ridden Hue and taken Wentz anyway? Thereby giving Hue a QB that Hue didn't care for?

At least he has been owning and taking responsibility for most of his hard decisions.

And we cannot say the same thing about Hue.

Well for one thing you could have addressed the question.

I didn't hear Hue say he didn't believe Wentz wasn't a top 20 QB. That would be De Podesta.

Really? Didn't Hue say the losses were on him? Now you're just making things up.

It’s so easy to pile on the Cleveland Browns right now. Heck, I’ll admit I did it myself Sunday night when one of their beat writers pointed out they’d now fired three general managers and three coaches (not to mention president Joe Banner) in only three years.

So naturally, when owner Jimmy Haslam announced he was promoting Sashi Brown to executive Vice President of football operations, it was quickly dismissed by many as more Browns-being-Browns behavior.

A lawyer as de facto GM? Please. It’ll be only two years before the Browns fire a guy named Brown and start doing this whole dance again, right?

Maybe not. This move might actually wind up being the first wise one Haslam has made.

Over the past few years, Brown’s name is the one that’s drawn praise when people around the league have spoken about Cleveland. In a front office where egos clashed, he was noted as the one who seemed to have the franchise’s best interests in mind.

A member of Sports Business Journal’s "Forty Under 40" list last year, Brown is a graduate of Harvard Law School and has served as the team’s general counsel after playing a similar role for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But to say Brown is going right from being the team’s lawyer to its GM would be a mischaracterization on both ends. He’s had more responsibilities in Cleveland than he did in Jacksonville, such as negotiating the team’s contracts. Several veteran agents have told FOX Sports dealings with Brown were much more professional than negotiations under previous regimes.

"He is very capable (of handling his new role)," one agent texted on Monday morning.

It’s not as if Brown is the first salary-cap guy to take over football operations. It’s just that his taking over minutes after Ray Farmer and Mike Pettine were fired and before the coaching search has even begun, framed by the Browns’ failures in recent years, makes this move an easy one to bash.

Plus, when Haslam announced Brown would have control over the team’s roster, it read for many as if he’d be the one selecting the players while trying to pass himself off as a longtime personnel guy who cut his teeth on the road for years.

That’s not the case, Browns sources say. They say he has no ego and they have full confidence Brown understands his role and his limitations. Most importantly, they say Brown knows how critical the hiring of the next head of personnel will be.

"If you look at the team’s that are successful, they’re very good at talent acquisition," Haslam said Sunday night. "That’s something we have to get right, and we think this setup with somebody with a background in systems, processes, analytics … married up with a football person who is very good at talent evaluation will hopefully put us in a position to win a lot more games than we have in the past."

There’s more to running football operations than picking the players. Way more. It’s about aligning an organization and making sure the coach, the head of personnel, the scouts and everyone are making joint decisions.

In other words, it’s about giving "Browns-being-Browns" a new meaning. Don’t be surprised if it’s the guy named Brown who gets that done.

I won't be surprised. I'll be SHOCKED!

I guess his opinion is as good as any since everybody has one.

The "law" is largely about judging the merits of cases. Berry and Hue can present their cases to the guy with legal experience. They are both football guys presenting the "arguments", Sashi is just deciding which makes more sense. How often have the two sides agreed? Disagreed? Who did Sashi side with? Do we know?

Reach is putting the blame of our putrid football only on the non-football guys....

If the alternatives presented for decision were all sensible, we wouldn't be where we are.
