O.k. so all you Hunters out there how'd you do today ? I've been hearing that there alot.of deer from some of.my friends who are trying to coax me back I to the woods. Gotta admit it was a pretty morning and I really had the urge to break the gear out .My buddy bagged an 11 point and his so got a big doe .
Nothing today. Except watching coyotes. And finding out a group of people that didn't have permission to be on the land they were on, pushed the woods about 10 minutes before I got to that particular area. (found this out from a guy sitting in his stand - and he has permission).
Oh well, opening day and that's usually the busiest day until Sat. and Sunday. A lot of people take today off work. Not so much the rest of the week.
So funny ! Was taking the trash cans to the end of the drive and what do I see in the nieghbors yard ? 3 deer eating his birdseed he puts out . On the heels of hearing how many deer my friends saw it must be an omen ...or a taunt from nature .
The Deer are smart, Over the last 15 years I noticed around this time of year, I've seen them in groups in very city-fied places, So, conclusion, they recognize, that when the days get short and the air gets cold early, since they get shot at in the woods, they are safer where the humans aren't shooting at them, so they hang out nearer buildings.
Once walked out, near a warehouse, nothing but industrial buildings around, found 8+ deer, grazing in a grass area between the buildings, no more than half the size of a football field, just at dark, so after 4pm.
you're not a real hunter if you aren't making kills with a knife or spear.
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
you're not a real hunter if you aren't making kills with a knife or spear.
Why stop there?
You're not a real hunter if you don't make the kill with a stone - not from a sling shot - just a thrown stone. OR, jump down from a tree and strangle whatever it is you're hunting.
No one should be able to use any tools to hunt, and a knife or a spear is a tool.
In fact, if we all went back to the stone age, we'd all be better off, right? No cars, so no emissions. No tractors polluting messing up the environment. Everyone just grows there own food. Those that don't, die.
I had a small herd, 5-6, in my front yard the other morning when I walked out early to get the newspaper, and they never moved. They like the acorns from my oak tree, apparently. One of them eyeballed me the whole way down the driveway, enough that I didn't like turning my back on it. I wish they'd go back to the Metroparks about a mile away.

Cool. So, be sure you turn your furnace off - after all, you don't want to use tools or technology. Go cut your wood for heat, but don't use a lighter to light it.
man you be taking these troll comments way too seriously.
how many times have i said im down with you hunters?
“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”
I think only twice. And I need to hear something more than twice.
so i need to say it 3 times like beetle juice or bloody mary before you believe it?
odd, but whatever floats your boat.
don't burn the deer meat when you cook it.

The deer aren’t better understanding their environment, it’s the irradiated deer ticks that infest their ears affecting their natural inclinations.
if you kill a lion with your bare hands, you damn well better make a lion cloth! a man's man.

Venison is the one meat I eat rare to medium rare.
May sound gross, but it's so, so good getting a deer. Let it hang for a day or so, skin it, quarter it, but taking the backstrap right off and grilling some after the quartering is done.
You do unless you are Amish and those SOB's seem to think they can hunt wherever they damn well please . They will also shoot anything that is brown and on 4 legs ...better keep spot in the house when Eziekiel and the boys are close . Flat out can't stand hunting anywhere near those @&$&@)!@ .
Couldn't handle it anymore so I took yesterday and today off, dug the gear out of mothballs and hit the woods. It was so nice to be back in the woods and it was a perfect morning. Bagged a big 8 point and and a big doe in the afternoon . That ended the fun part . I seem to have forgotten the work that comes along with the excitement of hunting lol . Gutting ,dragging, skinning, set up , clean up , disposal etc .Finished processing the doe at 1:30 in the morning and decided to pay for the buck to get processed . I will have a well stocked freezer for the winter though .
Fish are you talking whitetail or mule deer? Two different deer.
Mule deer are much bigger than whitetail and you have whitetail there. But on a whole Ohio whitetail are bigger than yours. You just don't have as many as we do so we will grow bigger being grain feed
The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.
Ok my one grandson was born to hunt. He passed his hunters safety course at 7 yrs old 45 minutes on opening day he got a 7 point buck. Seeing since I had to field dress it didn't set well with his mom ( my daughter).
She told him if you shoot it you clean it is not your grandpa's to do. She remembers me coming home with rabbits, ducks, squirrels, and deer. If I can find the picture of him cleaning his deer I will post it.

I meant both deer as far as points go, Nordawg, but I know you don't have Mule deer back east. When I first started to hunt during the early '60's, there wasn't very many Whitetail on the Marias River in Montana, where I hunt...only Mule Deer. The Mule Deer are slowly being pushed out and the Whitetail is exploding. Ten years ago, I shot a five-point Whitetail that scored close to the 152 mark that is shown in this photo: http://texashuntingforum.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/printthread/Board/3/main/154372/type/thread
Like you, I can no longer hunt because of health conditions.
So, I'll let you all in on my misery and failure so far this year in my hunting. Or, as I now prefer to look at it, I'll let you in on the deer that I didn't kill.
Gun week, day 2. I'm walking out to the spot I like to sit at. Backpack on my back, gun on my shoulder. And as I'm about 200 yards away, I see 4 deer cruising hard right where I would've been sitting.
I get down on a knee, gun at the ready, and as they bust out of the corner of the woods, they are headed straight at me. (a 200 yd. shot with a smooth bore barrel and plain old slugs isn't my shot) I wait, knowing that, since I'm in the middle of the field, on a knee, and they are coming right at me, the deer will see me, and when they do, they'll probably stop for a second, and more than likely turn broadside before taking off again.
I was right. All 4 stopped.
I guessed it to be 100 yards - but, there wasn't a lot of time. I fired. BAM - ?? I missed. Racked the gun and fired at the now sprinting deer. And missed again.
14 years of hunting, and with a gun, I'd never missed before - even a deer running. Never even have had to track a deer I shot.
I thought about a 3rd shot, but the deer were headed in a direction where I knew a house was maybe 600 yards behind them. I was about 4 feet lower than the deer to begin with, so I knew I was aiming up hill, albeit slightly, and the deer were sprinting, and I decided missing again, with a house in the background, wasn't a risk I was willing to take.
Arch: 0. Deer - all okay. ( I did step it off from where I first shot, simply because even though I was pretty certain I didn't hit one, I wanted to check for blood. None. And I walked the path they ran - maybe another few hundred yards, looking for blood. None. And, none of them had run like they had been hit anyway.)
2 days later, I was where I like to be. Woods behind me, field on 3 sides of me. Hours passed. I was bored. Leaned the gun up against a tree about an arms length away.
Not 3 minutes later, a deer hopped the fence in a tree row 88 yards from me, walking towards me.
Uh oh. I slowly extended my left arm to reach the gun. At about 70 yards, the deer stopped and just stared straight at me. (deer don't see color, but they sure see movement). I stayed completely still, arm outstretched. The deer stayed motionless as well. It was a standoff.
I then tried to slowly bring the gun to me, and the deer noticed movement and did a 180 high tailing it into the woods from where it had come. And trust me, shooting a running deer in the butt isn't a wise decision, so I didn't shoot.
Arch 0: Deer, much more.
Today, sitting in that same spot, looking out over the fields, out of the corner of my eye I spotted movement. Turned my head. 6 deer running, in the woods behind me - maybe 60 yards away. Stood, gun up, tried sighting them in. Of course, they were running, and as I was swinging the gun following them - hey, 60 yards in a wooded area - there's nothing but trees. (even though I could see them running)
(Now, I need to interject this here: I'm not one to just fire away in order to simply knock a deer down. Then have to track it, etc - for 2 reasons: 1. If it's not a kill shot, and the deer takes off, I may not find it. And 2. if it's a bad shot - gut shot, etc. man, it can ruin the meat, it can make you puke gutting it if you do find it, etc.)
So, I didn't shoot as they were running, as even hitting them and not a tree would've been pure luck.
I stood there, gun butt to my shoulder, and the deer stopped. 50 yards away. Flat out stopped. Right in front of some tall grass/weeds. Grass/weeds that are now the same color brown as the deer. Also, they were stopped right behind a 9/10ths fallen tree which was blocking much of my view. And again, 50 yards in the woods is a shot I won't take - trees, branches, etc blocking the view, as well as the chance of having shot that doesn't hit something to make it ricochet, etc.
So there I stand, gun at the ready, heart pumping, staring at the only 2 deer I could see. And I swear, I could only see their bodies. Not heads, not tails, just their bodies. And, with the brown behind them, them blending in so well.....I just looked down the gun barrel.
They didn't move. Neither did I. 1 minute. 2 minutes. 3 minutes. Please, deer, move just a bit.
And then they did. Hightailed it the 8 yards or so into the open field, and once again, I decided to not shot due to branches, trees, them sprinting and quartering away from me.
Arch:0 Deer, a whole lot more.
No deer for me.
Plenty of coyote tracks though. And it's kinda neat to see where the coyotes have "dived" into the snow to get a mouse. And to see the rabbit fur where I coyote has gotten a rabbit.
But, when your objective is getting a deer and you fail yet again, it's a bit depressing.
At least you got to get outside which is the best thing IMO . Nothing wrong with being careful with your shots either . Too many people aren't . Not to rub it in but I have some burger thawing out right now ..... Would set you up with a couple if you were closer .

Arch I have shot alot of deer over the years. Unfortunately the last 3 because of health I haven't be able to. Now I depend on my one grandson to get a deer for me. I can still get in a tree stand, but the walk to it I can no longer do. My brother in-law has some land and said I could hunt there and take the Atv to the stand.
Oh and my one grandson I need to get a deer. What I thought was cool. His first time hunting he was 7 yrs old and got a 7point buck that field dressed just over 125 lbs. He's getting a crossbow for Christmas. I told him I would match him shot for shot with my compound at 35 yds.
