"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

Here's a crazy scenario using that model.
Clemson loses to Miami Oklahoma beats TCU USC beats Stanford UCF loses to Memphis Boise loses to Fresno St.
Oklahoma is 99% to make playoff Miami is 72% to make playoff
then things get really crazy.
If Auburn beats Georgia, both Ohio State and Alabama are 47% to make the playoff. If Georgia beats Auburn, they are both a 59% to make the playoff.

so it looks like OSU's best chance:
1. Beat Wisconsin 2. Clemson beats Miami 3. Georgia beats Auburn 4. Stanford beats USC 5. TCU beats Oklahoma 6. UCF beats Memphis 7. Boise St beats Fresno St
that gives us a 78% chance to make the playoffs, the highest total possible

the problem is that O state got in, and then showed the world why they had no business being in the playoffs last year.
alabama isn't gonna get shut out in the playoffs. What's the explanation behind the 11-1, 2015 Buckeyes finishing 7th in the rankings leading up to the playoffs? Let's take a trip down memory lane. That Buckeyes team was the defending champ, so any arguments about what they did the previous year would benefit them. The 2014 team beat Wisconsin, Alabama, and Oregon with their 3rd string quarterback, something to keep in mind for anybody who thinks Alabama's win over Florida State this year is anything but a laugher. That 2015 Ohio State team was insanely good. These are the Buckeyes who were drafted after the season, in the 2016 NFL draft... Round (overall) - player 1 (3) - Joey Bosa 1 (4) - Ezekiel Elliott 1 (10) - Eli Apple 1 (16) - Taylor Decker 1 (20) - Darron Lee 2 (47) - Michael Thomas 2 (61) - Vonn Bell 3 (80) - Adolphus Washington 3 (85) - Braxton Miller 3 (94) - Nick Vannett 4 (102) - Joshua Perry 4 (139) - Cardale Jones ... and they still had enough talent to win against three teams that finished in the top 8 of the final playoff ranking in 2016, and nearly a fourth at Penn State. Admittedly, they did flame out in the playoffs. There was never any argument about whether that 2015 team was one of the four best teams. Everybody knew they were. Most thought they were the best team, and how that team even lost a game is still a mystery. But hey, they only had one high-quality win against Michigan, who was #12 at the time the game was played and who finished #17 (coincidentally, the same ranking of Alabama's best win this season, LSU.) There were four clearly deserving teams that season, so the committee made the right decision then. The interesting part is that Ohio State team finished #7, behind a 2 loss, #5 Stanford who arguably was not as good as Ohio State was this season, nor would they have the accomplishments of Ohio State should the Buckeyes take care of business against Wisconsin. For those who are dead set on the Buckeyes not making the playoffs, how do you reconcile that with what happened two years ago?

I have something to say about the Schiano and TN situation.
I think this is about as disgusting as it gets. There is absolutely no proof that Schiano ever did anything wrong. Surely, the TN administrators who hired him knew about him coaching at Penn St.
Schiano has been the HC at Rutgers, at Tampa Bay, and is now the DC at Ohio State. Now, all of a sudden he isn't good enough for Tenn and he is a defender of child sexual abuse according to some dumb-ass fans who wanted the university to hire Gruden.
I get that fans are dumb. However, the fact that the university caved in to these despicable individuals is a travesty of epic proportions.
They have just slandered a man's name and reputation w/claims that have no true substance behind them. This poor guy and his family are going to have to deal w/this for the rest of their lives. That is beyond wrong.
I'm disgusted that our once great country is allowing scum bags to make administrative decisions and forever tarnish a man's good name w/out any facts whatsoever.
Sometimes, it seems to me that our progress is actually more like the days of burning so-called witches at the stake than it is treating people fairly and w/dignity.

I agree, if there was any problems with his PSU past, one of his other employers would have tracked that crap down already. The mere fact he got Rutgers playing well says a lot about his recruiting and/or coaching ability. If I were him, I'd stick to being a coordinator. Good money, no major pressure and most any university would hire him.

I think it's ridiculous how many politicians got involved with it... if you don't like the guy that's one thing... I don't think he'd make a great HC as he seems to be a real hard ass.... but to slander him just to keep him from getting hired is really classless... tenn has some great fans... but I was really disappointed to see some slander him to keep him from being hired...

Right.
I'm pretty disgusted by this.
First of all, I think it is disgusting that so many people cry about things that have nothing to do w/them. I find it despicable that they slander a man's name w/out having any proof. Some of those signs were terribly offensive and gross. There is absolutely NO proof to support those defamatory claims!
But, I know that there will always be idiots out there looking for attention. It's the public and the public includes many ignorant people. So, what is more disturbing is how the university caved in to these idiots.
I get that child abuse is a very sensitive issue and no one wants to be associated w/any hint of it, but come on............there is NO PROOF ......that Schiano knew anything about it. A man's name has been forever tarnished due to irresponsible behavior and lack of fortitude. I hope their program goes even further downhill and they have a losing record until the current decision makers are gone.

I'm tempted to say something about the Iowa loss but I've said about all I can say about the playoff thing and ultimately what you wrote above is more important anyway. But yeah, I completely agree with you. My hope for humanity went down a few notches over the last day. That's probably an exaggeration, but you get the idea. It's just crazy what we witnessed.

Look at the Top 10 and then imagine if we had an 8-team playoff. Do you really want 8 of them in a playoff? And wouldn't the last few weeks of the season lose a lot of importance if a conference title game became just a seeding outcome? Heck, Alabama would be in with no drama, and they would have known that when they entered the Iron Bowl. We also have to maintain the illusion that these athletes are students as well. The thought of playing an 8 game tournament during bowl season, or shortly after the New Years is perplexing. The New Years games are bad enough.

If you're appalled by that, what do you think of this? The school that fired him and then went out of its way to set fire to his reputation now believes Art Briles was not in the wrong. So much so they put it in writing.
A letter from Baylor to Briles helped to convince the Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League to hire Briles as their offensive coordinator on Monday.
The letter, obtained by the Star-Telegram, clearly states Baylor’s support of its former coach, and all but clears him from any wrongdoing. Link As much as I enjoy watching college football, it is definitely surrounded with a lot of slime-fans, coaches, school officials, etc.

I’ve seen a few college football writers defending schiano with the penn state stuff, saying that the claims he knew are baseless.
I dunno, I’d hate to think he did but who the hell knows.
What I do know is that he’s a good coach who may have just had a favor done for him. Tennessee is a toxic situation and schiano is probably better off waiting a bit and taking another hire.
The way he had that Rutgers program all those years ago is pretty impressive. He will be ok.

If you don't like a guy and want to protest the hire ... go right ahead.
I hate that they hid behind the PSU stuff as the reason.

55-24 to an Iowa team that just got beat by Purdue. This. I am as big of an OSU fan as you will find, and I do not want us backing into the playoffs for a second year in a row. And with how much needs to happen to get in this year, it is backing in. We did it last year and got our doors blown off. I think it highly possible again. While Iowa is not terrible, overall, there was no excuse to never be in that game. And we weren't. The loss to D-Bag Mayfield is one thing, that is a playoff team (right now) but that loss to Iowa is inexcusable. I would be happy with the big 10 championship and the Rose Bowl (or is that a playoff game this year?)

Here's a piece that's pretty rough (arguably unfair) toward Nick Saban and Alabama. I'm posting it because I did not know the part about how Alabama always schedules a buy before LSU. Looking back, this is indeed the case for the last five seasons. https://www.foxsports.com/watch/the-herd-with-colin-cowherd/video/1104472643691 Here’s why Nick Saban deserves criticism for his out of conference scheduling
Colin Cowherd reacts to the Alabama Crimson Tide's loss to Auburn and explains how coach Nick Saban schedules his out of conference games.
- Clemson wins, they're in. They will. Oklahoma wins, they're in. They will. Wisconsin wins, they're in. I'm not sure-- coin flip.
And then the winner of the SEC-- Georgia- Auburn. If you think Auburn's going to beat Georgia, having beat them twice in Alabama, and doesn't get in, what are you smoking? Georgia-- if they can beat Auburn-- Georgia's going to have a quality win on the road against Notre Dame. They're going to have a quality win against Auburn. They're going to get in.
Alabama's on the outside looking in. I don't feel any pity. Now, I do think Bama has a chance to get in. Because if Wisconsin loses to Ohio State, and that's a coin flip to me, then you may have two SEC teams.
But, first of all, I don't feel pity for Nick Saban. I know Nick. I like Nick. He's a great coach. He's an all-timer.
But they could've controlled the situation. Nick's been manipulating college football schedules at Bama for years. They play Mercer twice a year. They have a bye right before LSU.
They always have a weakling cupcake right before Auburn. USC didn't have a bye this year. Their out of conference was at Notre Dame in Texas.
Nick schedules out of conference games only on neutral fields. They're doing it again next year. They face Louisville in Orlando. They face Florida State in, you know, Dallas.
He won't go on the road. By the way, the times Nick's gone on the road this year, they got their ears boxed by Auburn. They should've lost to Mississippi State. And it was a one-score game with A&M. And those aren't great teams outside of Auburn.
So Nick is manipulating the system. Georgia got on the phone and dialed up Notre Dame and went there-- total respect. Auburn got on the phone-- went to Clemson. Win or lose, you had the guts to do it.
Nick has been manipulating schedules. He knows it. His people know it. And nobody in the media calls him out for it.
They go-- they-- he won't go on the road for big out of conference games. There's always a bye before LSU. There's a cupcake before Auburn. And all he does is whine when he occasionally every fourth year gets a tough road schedule in the SEC.
Bama does not have a quality win. Mississippi State? They're going to be unranked this week. LSU, that lost to Troy-- that lost to Mississippi State by 30? Where's their quality win?
Georgia beat Notre Dame on the road. Auburn beat Alabama. Alabama's sitting home right now-- listen, it's over if Clemson wins. And they will. They're in.
Oklahoma wins, they're in. And the SEC Champ wins, they're in. I would take Georgia over Alabama. Georgia will have beaten Auburn and Notre Dame. Those are quality wins.

The angry mob of college kids have realized that if they make enough noise, they can get almost anything they want from administrations that would rather just stay out of the news.. want a professor fired? want a campus rule changed? want a speaker banned? want a coach fired? You can have all of this and more with an active social media campaign and a whole bunch of righteous indignation over things you know very little about.

SEC teams have been doing this for a while now, although I understand going after Alabama because they're Alabama. Scheduling byes that late in the year, or freaking Mercer is an embarrassment, and shouldn't be allowed. I saw some SEC fans shoot back with Ohio State playing Illinois the same week. Ohio State has zero say in their Big Ten schedule, not to mention, on top of that, inter-conference games can sometimes surprise you. Nobody would have said a damn word if it was Vanderbilt instead of Mercer. Winning in November is so hard, even when the competiton isn't a ranked opponent. To schedule a cupcake that late in the year is cheating the system if you ask me. Games against Mercer, and Savannah State, and other teams that have no business in D1 football should be saved for September. And the funniest part is that SEC fans for YEARS have thrown the schedule card at everyone else.

It'd be hard to be convinced Alabama isn't one of the 3 best teams in college football this year, let alone top 4.
Of all the years to leave the Big 10 out, If they are going to leave the Pac 10(12) (Whatever) out, why not leave out the Big 10.
I know that most years, I'd be the one making the argument, "no way" would a Big 10 undefeated team not deserve to, (have to!) be in a top 4, but... honestly, I could really see Wisc, not being one of the top 4 teams in College Football, regardless of if they "smackdown" Ohio State, or not.
Don't know how the games will play out, but in my gut the best 4 teams Georgia, Clemson, Alabama, Oklahoma,
4 best, could easily see it, especially after UGA is going to backlash against Auburn.

I'd agree ... just based off my instinct, those are the four best teams (clemson, bama, Georgia, and Oklahoma). The problem is proving it lol

I think all of this year's top teams are flawed. I think Alabama is the least impressive team that I have seen. They haven't beat one quality opponent and they just didn't have "a bad day" against Auburn like Clemson did against Syracuse or Ohio St did against Iowa, but they were soundly beaten in every area of the game.

If Wisconsin beats Ohio State, Wisconsin will be in the playoffs. There is no question about this. If Ohio State beats Wisconsin, things get tricky. Wisconsin would almost certainly be out; it's just hard to come up with a scenario where they could still finish in the top 4. Where Ohio State would finish with a win... that's complicated. I predict anywhere from #3 to #5, depending on the results of the Big 12 championship game and how the committee resolves the Ohio State/Alabama conundrum. Current rankings by the way: http://www.espn.com/college-football/rankingsCollege Football Playoff Rankings RK TEAM REC TREND 1 Clemson 11-1 2 2 Auburn 10-2 4 3 Oklahoma 11-1 1 4 Wisconsin 12-0 1 5 Alabama 11-1 4 6 Georgia 11-1 1 7 Miami 10-1 5 8 Ohio State 10-2 1 9 Penn State 10-2 1 10 USC 10-2 1 11 TCU 10-2 1 Note 10-2 Auburn is already #2, with the SEC title game still to be played. Does this give insight into the committee's thinking, especially in regards to the importance of quality wins?

I haven't really followed the saga down in Tennessee that closely, but based on this write-up, their treatment of coach Schiano seems like it is coming back to bite them. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/11/29/jim-bob-cooter-wont-interview-at-tennessee/Jim Bob Cooter won’t interview at Tennessee
The University of Tennessee’s comical/pathetic search for a head coach now includes being spurned by an alumnus.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Lions offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter will not interview for the vacant Volunteers job.
Cooter apparently prefers to stay in the NFL, with designs on becoming a head coach, a path which has had ups and downs.
He was a backup quarterback at Tennessee and got his coaching start there as a graduate assistant.
After firing Butch Jones, the Volunteers offered/rescinded former Bucs coach Greg Schiano, and have been turned down by Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy. Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, a former Vols assistant, has also declined to interview for the job.

Yup. The Big Ten has 4 teams in the top 16, the SEC has 4 teams in the top 17. How one conference should get 2, and the other none would be pretty hilarious. I'm not as much appalled at the idea of Ohio State not getting in as much as I am that Alabama could possibly get into the top 4 without beating anybody. I mean that schedule is a joke. Their best win is #17 LSU and #23 Mississippi State. Ohio State only has Penn State, but that is a top ten team, and they also could beat Wisconsin who even with a loss on Saturday, would stay in the top 10. Two wins against top ten teams. Committee could potentially have a really hard job, on top of possibly setting another precedent, as they did last year (Ohio State getting in over PSU). Ohio State should be knocked for losing badly to Iowa. The Oklahoma loss is fine, as it was early in the year, a competitive game, and they're the #3 team in the country. The Iowa loss is bad, and has made the whole situation really interesting. Alabama should absolutely be knocked for a horrible schedule, and no they don't get credit for what Florida State MIGHT have been with their quarterback all year. Doesn't work that way, and good teams overcome injuries. They were horrible the rest of the year. So it really could come down to Ohio State with 2 losses, one of which being a beatdown to an unranked team, and Alabama with a weak schedule and no top 15 wins, and no conference championship. Wisconsin could make everyone's job quite easy and just beat Ohio State too.

And the funniest part is that SEC fans for YEARS have thrown the schedule card at everyone else. Let me lay out where I agree and disagree with your points... For a while there, the SEC had a point. The SEC had 3 or 4 of the best 10 teams in the country every year and a conference schedule was enough to prove your worth... lately that has started to change and other conferences have leveled it out quite a bit.. Second, you can't hold all of Alabama's schedule against them, they agreed to play FSU in 2015 when FSU was coming off losing the national championship game.. then FSU QB got hurt and they had a miserable year.. Third, you can't hold it against Alabama that LSU and the two Mississippi schools have fallen off lately. Now.. I agree with you that Bama doesn't do home and homes like most teams do, they do neutral field gigs.. they should change that with a good team at the beginning of the year. Second, having Mercer late is kind of a joke, after about week 3, you should be done with those kinds of games.. as for him having a bye week every year before LSU.. didn't have any idea he was doing that. Can't the SEC fix that by rotating a game in there most years? I mean if I'm Nick Saban, and the conference gives me that as a bye week, I'm NOT going to race out to try to play Oklahoma that day.. that would be stupid. All in all, Saban is living by the rules created.. as fans folks love it or hate it based on their feelings about Alabama but I'm hard pressed to say that if I had the success Saban has had and wanted to play for a NC every year.. I would do whatever I could to set up my schedule to make that happen.. My goal wouldn't be to provide you with a fun game to watch in November, my goal would be to get to the NC game..

Ohio State had their schedule held against them 10 years ago when they had a home/home with Miami, and at the time, Miami was not a top program like they were when it was scheduled.
I totally understand what you're saying, because you don't know ahead of time, but my point is, Alabama should have it held against them that their non-conference was weak, just as other schools in other conferences had.
Also, that's my point about other SEC teams being down. That should be held against them as it has other conferences in the past.
I don't blame Saban for what he does. It's not like he's breaking the rules, I just think the NCAA should step in and not allow cupcakes that late in the year.
I also don't think that him doing that hinges on him winning. He's the best coach in the country, with no real close second, and even without the scheduling stuff and the neutral field OOC games, he'd still be the best coach.

quote above by DC: Third, you can't hold it against Alabama that LSU and the two Mississippi schools have fallen off lately. Oh no... Not the Mississippi Valley State Community College Cotton Pickers and Alcorn State Acorns.

A 2 loss OSU TEAM IN OVER A 1 LOSS ALABAMA .... ... U guys are delusional .... U conveniently mention Alabama has beaten no one and then two top 25 teams they’ve beaten ... Then u CONVENIANETLY FORGET to mention that Bama lost to the #2 in the country ... U guys lost to OU and WHO???? ... And u got BLOWN OUT by a 500 team ..... Its not that hard ... The winner of the SEC game is in ... The winner of the ACC game is in ... If OU wins ... there in .. if they lose up jumps Bama If Wisconsin wins ... there in ... if they lose ... AND OU wins up jumps Bama ... AND OU loses ... up jumps Bama and then it gets real real hairy ... theres going to be some peed off teams if this happens .... To think U guys jump a one loss Bama team is a JOKE .... IMO the 3 best teams in the country are the 3 SEC teams ... and i’m no SEC SCHILL ... not even close ...

Ohio State got in last year, despite not winning their conference, because they had 3 top-7 wins. Alabama has no wins inside the top 15, isn't playing for a conference title, and their best win is against LSU (womp womp) I mean, yeah, Ohio State has definite flaws, but to just dismiss the fact that Alabama has done nothing all year is pretty hilarious.

Nobody really knows what would happen if the last spot came down to Ohio State or Alabama. There are arguments for and against both teams. I have said that Ohio State would be more likely than not to get the nod, but would not be surprised to see it go the other way. The latest rankings bode well for Ohio State, because it is clear that which teams you beat is a big factor. More: http://www.ncaa.com/news/football/articl...orgia-miami-and5. Alabama (11-1)
So You're Saying There's a Chance: Alabama's resume has been signed, sealed and delivered to the playoff selection committee. Without an SEC Championship game to potentially boost the Crimson Tide's playoff profile, they're currently stuck on the outside looking in at the top four, hoping that at least one of the teams ahead of them loses. Ohio State showed last season that a one-loss, non-conference champion can make the playoff, so why can't Alabama this year? Speaking of Ohio State, if there's a game circled on Alabama's viewing schedule this weekend, it's the Big Ten Championship at 8 p.m. ET. As blasphemous as it may sound, the Crimson Tide might be the Buckeyes' biggest supporters on Saturday. Wisconsin's best win was against a 9-3 Northwestern team that's ranked No. 21. None of their other opponents are ranked in the latest playoff rankings.
Ohio State might be a flawed team but remember what happened the last time the Buckeyes played Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship? Ohio State won 59-0. If Ohio State beats Wisconsin, Alabama could have a strong argument to get in ahead of the Buckeyes. The 55-24 shellacking Ohio State suffered at the hands of Iowa could prove to be costly. Alabama's only loss was on the road against the team currently ranked No. 2 in the country – Auburn. and 8. Ohio State (10-2)
So You're Saying There's a Chance: Could Ohio State be responsible for another "first" in the College Football Playoff era? Last year the Buckeyes proved that a one-loss power conference team doesn't need to win its conference to make the playoff. A two-loss team has never made the playoff but Ohio State could potentially break that barrier this year.
A win over undefeated No. 4 Wisconsin would be a major resume booster for the Buckeyes, who would also have their Big Ten Championship in their back pocket as a tie-breaker if necessary. They would assuredly leap Wisconsin and likely the loser of the ACC Championship, plus at least one SEC team.
There's a narrative online and on television that Ohio State and Alabama might battle for the final spot if the Buckeyes beat the Badgers (assuming Oklahoma wins the Big 12), and the case for Ohio State would be this: a Big Ten champion with three wins (Wisconsin, Penn State, Michigan State) that are better than Alabama's best win (LSU) in the committee's eyes. Ohio State's blowouts are often as convincing as any team in the country, so another decisive victory over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship could punch the Buckeyes' ticket to the playoff.

I think you are full of hot air on this one. I think the SEC has been regressing the past couple of years and was pretty awful this year.
Alabama didn't beat anyone this year and were physically destroyed by a two-loss team. Georgia didn't beat anyone, unless you think your team is good. LOL
Saying the SEC has three top teams is whacked, but they do get a lot of attention and acclaim, especially considering ESPN paid them a fortune.
