Second-Day Picks Ink Deals

By Barry McBride

On the eve of the team's rookie orietentation, the Browns have signed Brandon McDonald, Syndric Steptoe, and Melila Purcell to four-year deals. First day picks Joe Thomas, Brady Quinn, and Eric Wright remain unsigned.

The Browns have informed the Orange and Brown Report this evening that all of the team's second-day picks have been signed to four-year contracts.

In addition to Chase Pittman, signed last week, and Melila Purcell, who signed last evening, the team has agreed to contracts with fifth-round pick CB Brandon McDonald and seventh-round selection WR Syndric Steptoe.

The news comes on the eve of the team's rookie orientation session. Practice for all rookies and veterans begins on Friday, when training camp also opens to the public.

Still unsigned are LT Joe Thomas (first round, pick three), QB Brady Quinn (first round, pick twenty-two), and CB Eric Wright (second round, selection fifty-three). The Browns have been in negotiations with representatives for all three.

The Browns are far from alone in not signing their first and second round picks. Scout.com's Who's Signed, Who's Not database shows relatively first signings in the first two rounds as teams enter the last week prior to the wide opening of training camps across the league.

I figured we'd get an "all-at-once" report on something like this.

It sure would be nice to get an "all-at-once" report on the other 3!

Well, since Timmons, the Steelers' first round pick, signed, and he was drafted 15th, I should hope that would help with the Quinn stuff. Yeah, they're different positions, but I should think it would help.

It said in the Plain Dealer his agent would be in town today so hopefully they're getting close...

Joe Thomas made Justin Timberlake change his name. He didn't want wusses to have the same initials...

I think that now that the second day guys are signed, there will be more time spent on the other three. IMO Wright will be next then Quinn. I think the Timmons signing will speed up the signing of Quinn.
As for Joe, I think we will have to wait until the end of the week or longer.

Hopefully Joe will push his agent a little and maybe speed things up.

I got a funny feeling Quinn will be signed before Wednesday.

Thomas and Wright are the 2 big ones IMO, because they are guys who more than likely will start, whereas Quinn may not. (especially if he ain't in by Friday)

Good news that they got the other 4 in. I was hoping that I'd be reading the board late Sunday night and find out the picks are all starting to sign.

Phew!

Now let's work on the Big 3.

Wouldn't it be something if Quinn was the first one to sign???

ESPN would go nuts.

But, I know this may sound crazy, but, I could care less if Quinn signs first or not, because frankly, he's the one we don't need in camp right away like Thomas and Wright, because Brady probably won't be starting.

I really have a problem with this line of thinking. Even if he doesn't win the job (which IMO if he had the same amount of reps with the first team as the other QB's he would), every rep in practice is important, getting the playbook digested and the timing and speed of the game down.

He'll be starting sooner rather than later...I think the pressure to start him will be 10x greater than the pressure to start Holcomb over Couch and #9 over #8 (yeah that's right, I didn't like Dilfer that much either).

The same applies to the other two picks. I'm beginning to salivate if Wright really is the real deal, having some real depth at CB for once in our lives.

And of course, Thomas and Quinn go hand in hand. You don't start Brady Quinn without Joe Thomas, period.

Why?

If Quinn doesn't start right away, why hold back Thomas from gelling with O-line so when Brady does become QB, Thomas will already be comfortable with the line and it would make Brady's job much easier. I'm having trouble with what you stated there..

I said you don't start Brady Quinn without Joe Thomas. I did NOT say you don't start Joe Thomas without Brady Quinn.

Well it's a start anyways.
I see Wright signing first though. He needs to get in there and prove he can start right away. Sitting home waiting for the $$ to roll in doesn't equal playing time when your still a question mark.

I agree with you and will elaborate a bit.

The first thing rookies get coached on in training camp is the fundamentals. Once the preseason games start, coaches are too concerned with the weekly game plan* to take the time to go back and deal individually with a player who came in late.

That's one reason RAC makes a big deal out of missing any camp at all. It's tough to come in when everyone else is a week or two ahead of you. That's a lot of catching up to do especially when the coaches don't have the time to devote to you.

It's to the benefit of everyone to be in on time. Even if the Browns have already made up their mind to sit Quinn for the season, ala Carson Palmer, it is still detrimental for him to be late to camp.

I don't buy the "convience" angle of Quinn holding out. The convience angle says that it makes the Browns QB decision that much easier if Quinn takes himself out of the mix by holding out.

If RAC has not already decided to sit Quinn for a pre-determined time, BQ's being in camp is even more crucial.

Every backup is one play away from stepping on the field. If the consensus is true that whomever does not start between CF and DA will be released, then that makes BQ the backup. If he is the backup, he has to be ready to take the field. Possibly as soon as the second offensive snap in the opening game.

Thomas will be on time. That's just my opinion. We'll see.

*preseason, weekly game plan - preseason games are not game planned the same as regular season games. The main planning in the preseason is to get a look at specific players and schemes vs. an opponent in a game situation, for the purpose of practice and evaluation. For instance, if a QB needs work on his three-step drop, the team will have him throw three-step drops even if the down and distance wouldn't otherwise call for that. That's game planning for practice and evaluation rather then for victory. But it still is the order of the day for the coaches, leaving them little time for coaching individuals as referenced above.

Moses was a mortal lock to go top 10 heading into 2006 until he played like crap 3/4 of his senior year. He cost himself a lot of money. I realize you're a UGA fan, but if you try to argue this one, I'm just going to be shocked because there is no excuse for how horrible he was last year. Charles Johnson is about half as physically talented, yet he went ahead of Moses.

I won't "ask your logic" because I haven't see ANYTHING to substantiate your suspicions.

Believe me,I've read TONS of stuff on Thomas. And through it all,one factor has remained a constant from every source I've read.

He's humble,a team player and all around good guy.

Now I can't say from first hand experience because I've never had the oppertunity to meet the young man in person. But I would think that in all of the research I did on him before the draftr and everything I've read since, that I would have gotten some hint of that from somewhere. But I haven't.

HA, no need for debate...Moses suckity sucked his senior year.

And I by no means am a Georgia hater...I was readying for campaign for Paul Oliver for this season before he went supp. I've been a staunch supporter of Jean Gilles, Pollack, Thomas Davis, and I think Kregg Lumpkin has the potential to be a very good pro RB. I pimped Davis till I was blue in the face.
