happens. oh well.

but yea there's a ton of useless degree paths that students take.

i don't even put that on the school really. i put that on the student, their counselors in high school, and their parents for taking completely useless degrees.

but you see it a lot in real life. we have a bunch of officers in the military with useless degrees....which is the whole reason they're in the military lol. poor decision making, followed by "oh crap need to do something before moms basement becomes a permanent residence".

honestly i wish there was a way that we can get students paid for with a national effort of getting them in degree paths that we need in the labor force.

schools in europe have "free" education (we've been over this so we all know what "Free" means"), but for the most part it works out for them, as they have homegrown talent to fill their jobs, and keep the best.

they also get free education, then come to america and ball out of control. sucks but thats life.

but it doesn't have to be if we got it together.

i'm liberal so i know you don't like our plans most of the time, but what i would do is make school free for American citizens/green card holders only, but with a bunch of regulations.

Students must have a 2.5 gpa in high school, and must get a degree in the 4-8 most in demand industries (such as medical, engineering, business, etc). make it so that the in demand industries are reviewed every 4-5 to reflect current labor demands.

illegals, students coming over overseas through student visas are not eligible for their funded education, but i would change it so student visa holders are eligible to get in-state tuition rates.

no federal funding will go to for-profit/private schools. only state schools.

federal loans will still be provided for students going into degree paths out of the top 8 industries/fields, but again, no federal loans for profit/private schools, but will encourage banks to offer student friendly loans (low interest rates and monthly payments) for students that want to go to private schools.

i would also federally fund all trade schools (electrician, plumbing, etc).

i know there's a lot of holes and flaws, but overall, i feel a system like this would allow us to develop home grown talent and get our own people hired in skilled positions across the country. the economy would get a boost with more people in skilled/high pay positions, the making cost of investment more than worth it.

That deals with athletes. The broader point is, colleges and Universities offer up bunk "majors" in order to...........get customers.

Period.

Who is dumb and out of touch?

You still are by listing programs that only athletes are involved in because colleges need to keep up the appearance of an education so that they can keep their slave labor.

You simply don't get it. Those programs are available to anyone, not just athletes.

You don't get it. No one is part of these programs besides athletes.

Are you SERIOUS???

interdepartmental studies or general studies,, you could include "college studies"........ Dude, those aren't JUST for athletes.

Dude, I could name you 10 people I went to college with that got "degrees" in "collegiate studies"

And that was at a small, liberal arts school - no athletic scholarships what so ever.

Pretty much every college or university has similarly titled degrees, or majors. If you think it's just for the athletes, you are ignorant of the facts.

Wow, I thought you were more intelligent than this. I've learned something about you today.

Thanks. I think my daughter and I will do just fine in the search for a school that fits her, fits the money, and that she likes and fits in to.

She knows exactly what she wants to do - well, as much as any 17 year old does.

What does she want to pursue?
We've all dang near watched her grow up in these threads, so we're all kinda invested nowadays.

This topic doesn't tell me anything knew about you, Arch. Other than you probably majored in knitting.

Just because a majority of athletes take a program, doesn't mean that it's built for them. That wouldn't make sense.

Also, the one interesting thing about the major is that it's not a traditional major, but rather a degree that states you have knowledge of whichever areas of study the person did.

Nursing.

And I realize I've spoken too much about my daughter - hell, chs is calling me out saying he hopes I don't give my daughter any guidance on college since I'm dumb and simplistic.

There won't be much more from me about my daughter. Trust me.

Showing your ignorance again I see.

She knows what she wants to do. You're now being a jerk simply because I showed you your ignorance.

And by the way I have many, many good personal friends that are emt's, paramedics, RN's, doctors, and many more that are in health administrative positions, including a CEO of a hospital, and actually my father who spent 46 years in health care, 40 of them as the CEO.

Chill dude, I know a lot. My daughter is in damn good hands, and she'll get into a damn fine school.

You didn't school me on anything. I don't know what you're smoking tonight, but I can guess.

Collegiate Studies (or some similar name) is available at just about every college/univ. in this country. It's a fancy name for the college to take your money. I've obviously done more research than you And yet you call ME out of touch. Priceless.

Grow up.

I don't know if you were working close to freon or not today, but your posts have made me wonder.

Please, you made up a major called "knitting" to show how colleges produce customers and were proved wrong. You've since changed your argument to show a major that is predominantly filled with student athletes, who are not customers. You link an article from SB Nation showing how much of a joke this education is and then say "people are choosing it". That's not how it works, homeboy. Go back to underwater basketweaving.

I probably can't follow along because your freon addled brain keeps making up conversations as you go. You lied about colleges making up majors to get customers. I can't make you accept reality, Arch. You gotta start doing that yourself.

Freon addled brain? Where the hell do you come up with this?

No, I don't remember saying that. In fact, this proves another point: You have no point.

What I ACTUALLY said was colleges are in the business of attracting customers. And they'll offer degrees in anything in order to get that customer.

Dude, you're looking worse and worse here. Putting words in my mouth I never said? Come on, I used to think you were better than that.

I've learned though.

I think you ought to quit posting for tonight. You just posted what I said in the post above. You aren't thinking properly tonight. Go to bed. Wake up, have some coffee, and then start reading again.'

You'll see what I mean in the morning. Or, maybe you won't. Regardless, I find it funny.

You made my point, by quoting my point, yet attempting to say I said different.

I see the problem Arch. Your original post needs a little deciphering. I got it alright, but I'm more tuned to your rhetoric than most. Maybe you should offer an english translation on at least a 10th grade level with you more insightful posts.

Sorry. I don't do the Hillary Clinton persuasive tool where you super hedge all your ideas. IE saying Colleges are not entirely in the business of education, but it's actually about attracting customers. Saying "entirely" as a caveat doesn't change the meaning, it makes someone a liar.
