What does signing Alex Smith accomplish? The chance to win once in a while, for starters. Or are we planning to tank again next year because that's when the really good QBs are coming out? Browns need to find a way to win at least 6 games next year, IMO. Another 0-16, 1-15, 2-14 year and I think they risk losing their fan base for good.

How many more wins would we have if he was our QB versus Josh Rosen with Kizer as the backup? I'd much rather invest our assets elsewhere.

Alex Smith is a good qb. He would be a huge upgrade.
However, I agree that I would rather roll w/Rosen than Smith.

At some point we are going to want to re-sign all of these high picks and the $14-$20 million Alex Smith will cost will come in handy.

Sorry, but I don’t want Alex Smith teaching Lamar Jackson how to check down every play when WRs are running wild.
We already got a captain checkdown guy and his name is Cody Kessler.

I'm having an argument with this.. j/c:
For the purposes of this discussion, let's just say he does like Smith. I think the odds of him trading for Smith would be greatly influenced by who we take in the first round.
If we take Rosen, there would be no need to trade for Smith because Rosen will be ready to start day one. For the sake of argument, lets stipulate that Rosen is ready day one.. I STILL think it's smarter to let a seasoned veteran like Smith play, let the kids sit and learn. If Smith gets hurt, then we have a "ready day one" guy right? Eventually everyone gets hurt even JT. We need to let these kids sit, learn and develop in the meantime. Not overly interested especially if one of our top three or picks is involved. Much rather overpay for a FA than give picks away. I'm TOTALLY on board with that..

Hard to say what he does. We could draft a QB at #1. We could trade down a bit and still select a QB, or we could select another position and select a QB at 7 or wherever the Houston pick falls.
There are 3-4-5 QBs, assuming all come out. Knowing which one turns out to be the guy Doresy likes will sawy which road we take. All of those QBs areing going in the first 7 picks. He may decide there are 3, any of which he likes. Then it's a matter of projecting what otther teams might do before us.
Most likely, we don't fool around and select a QB at #1, then maybe trade down out of 7. Depo is the strategy officer. Much depends on if he and Dorsey see eye to eye. It's obvious to me that Jimmy still likes the plan that was in place as a whole. It just needed a different trigger...someone with a bigger football voice, but the plan to gain more picks next year is always a good plan.
As for a vet QB, sure, I like the idea, be it Smith or whoever.
Also, we are hearing much about cap space. It sounds to me like Haslam is willing to spend the cash. Spending to bring in Cousins would change much.
I also think we move up with some of those 2nd rounders. It isn't just about quantity. Quality counts in my book. That top 2nd rounder is valuable. Teams have all night to fall in love with a player..turn that into a future 1st rounder by trading down 12 slots. If we could get KC I'd be happy. It'd be better than drafting one high. He can ball in the NFL.

Maybe it's because KC has a very solid roster? He sure as hell has a better resume than Sashi did.
I'll wait until he screws up before I bury him.

Why is it okay for you to post in that style, but it's wrong for me to reciprocate? I basically mimicked everything you said, but said it from the opposite perspective.
No one is nominating Dorsey for the HOF, but some of us think he is an upgrade to the freaking lawyer. Big deal!

AJ will provide the veteran presents and won’t have to be promised a starting job ... Smith will get traded to a team like Denver or J-Villa thats ready to win NOW ... hes a PIPE DREAM at best ....

Totally agree. I'm GREEDY. I want my 10 year QB NOW. Not a 35 year old stop gap. Especially if it stops us from going Rosen/Darnold at #1. Getting Smith and NOT going QB at #1 is the WORST possible scenario. I now SUPER agree on Mccarron. He won't be guaranteed the Starter, and even bigger to me is he Knows Jackson's Offense. Even with only what 9 starts Mccarron is still a Vet. We need that. Kizer needs that. Rosen or Darnold need that. He Knows Jackson's Offense! Rosen/Darnold Mccarron Kizer Is a Huge upgrade at QB, and IMHO FIXES QB for 12+ Years. Rosen/Darnold stud out? We trade Kizer down the road.

Here is one common thread between Hue and Dorsey that is worth contemplation.
During the 2016 draft the Browns were ready to draft Mahomes until Dorsey made a trade up to get him.
That tells me both men love pure talent potential and are willing to overlook mistakes of inexperience that prospects can make in college.
I love Mahomes and had a high grade on him. However, I knew he was project. His college career was littered with errors of judgement. At the same time he could make plays others would not think of because they couldn't make those type of plays.
Another thing about Mahomes going to KC; it was already known he would be sitting for at least a year.
2018 draft the guy most like Mahomes is Josh Allen. That does not mean he will be the Browns target because there are others that the Browns will most likely get to choose from. But I believe Allen will be in the mix.
So maybe to some degree Hue and Dorsey will see eye to eye on QB prospects.
I don't remember where I read that Hue likes Rosen? But between Hue and Dorsey I think they will be able to find common ground on a quarterback in this draft.
Who knows maybe they repeat the process. Alex Smith plays band aid for a year.

Agreed. Signing Smith with a draft like this would stack the team, fill the needs, and allow Allen to sit.

I don't see Smith as a mentoring type. To his credit, apparently he's been great with Pat Mahomes. There has been a lot of praise in that regard. It's the opposite of the rumors regarding Smith and Kaep during their time with the 49ers. Maybe it's because he's getting to the end of his career, and he's no longer a 'build around him' kind of QB. Now, he's more a 'stop gap' for a year or two. Being willing to mentor a young QB would increase his value and extend his career. When you're over 30, it's better to be Josh McCown than Jay Cutler.

While I do understand your point, I'm not so sure it's applicable to our situation.
When you have an Alex Smith on the roster, your circumstances are very different than when you have a Cody Kessler as your QB. KC also didn't have the luxury of such a high draft pick as we did.
I'm not so sure that Dorsey would have drafted Mahomes if he had the opportunity to draft a QB higher in the draft on a team starving for a starter.
The circumstances of each team were markedly different. Different situations may have netted far different results.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

If Dorsey thinks trading for Smith is the best option to improve the Browns next year then I'm all for it. Dorsey knows Smith well and that's good enough for me. Smith would be the best QB we've had since Bernie and that would be hard to turn down. Plus we would have Kiser and whoever we draft waiting in the wings and learning from Smith. Who knows, Kiser may win him over by the end of the season or he may have a QB he really wants in the draft. Whatever they choose I hope Hue and Dorsey are in total agreement.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Alex Smith has a QB rating of 107.2 in an offense that is taking many more risks this year then whatever he was asked to do before. He is on pace to have a 4,000 yard season and still only has 4 ints. He has displayed the ability to go deep often this year despite past offenses forcing him to dink and dunk.
In my opinion, he would be a perfect choice that could play for more than a few years if needed and also help mentor a couple of young QB's.

In my opinion, he would be a perfect choice that could play for more than a few years if needed and also help mentor a couple of young QB's. I think the larger problem is his inconsistency. He's got 23 touchdowns to 4 interceptions, but he's got 16 touchdowns to 0 interceptions across five games. That's seven games that make up the remaining 7 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Those are numbers we love overall, but on a pretty great team with arguably the most talented roster in the NFL, inconsistent play just isn't going to cut it. Being 6-6 isn't where they want to be, even if he's playing at a pretty high level overall. But he's still obviously a very productive quarterback. That, in and of itself, makes him desirable to teams like Denver and Jacksonville. They need a QB, and he can do some winning with them. If he takes a smaller, short term deal, I don't know why it would be with us. On the other hand, I question how productive he would be if he was a Cleveland Brown. The 49ers and Chiefs were both absolutely loaded teams when he was performing the way he did/is. Coming to a team that doesn't boast that much talent, he might be a very different quarterback. I have to wonder if he's a "more than a few years if needed" type of quarterback, right? Something about it feels right, but also feels wrong. I think it's that he's a very good quarterback, but he's also not the answer. Too good to be a two year kind of guy, but not good enough to be a 5/6 year answer kind of guy.

You can't look at 5 games as a statistical outlier, 2 or 3 maybe, but 5 is a big portion of his body of work....and he's 23/4.

The way I look at it we hired John Dorsey to run our personnel Dept. and make those decisions. Let him do what he was hired for. If he thinks Alex Smith will improve the team so be it. If he thinks another certain move will improve us fine. I'll be on board with what moves he makes. That's why we have him. I just hopes the moves are the right ones.

I'd be ok with Smith for our vet QB here until our young QB's are up to NFL speed that we drafted.

So most likely the Vikings will trade one of them.

But I could get on board very quickly if we traded for him and drafted Rosen. Go into next year with Teddy, Rosen, Kizer. Damn.
