I have 3. A lab/Corgi mix we rescured, and I have 2 French Mastiffs (yes, the dog from turner and hooch). The bigger dogs are the babies and the little dog rules over them. Its quite funny.
They are 150lbs lap dogs.

he sleeps downstairs out in the open like a normal dog.
Normal around here must mean something different. Our dogs each have their person. The white schnauzer sleeps next to me, probably because the first night I brought him home when he was just 8 weeks old, I put him in the laundry room in a crate and he screamed bloody murder. Knowing no one was going to get any sleep, I laid a blanket out on the living room floor and he and I promptly went to sleep there. If I fall asleep on the couch, he's there, if I go to bed, he's there. I'm his person.

Either under the bed, on the floor, or on the bed, or in the dog bed. Then sometimes they stay out all night and sleep outside. A lot of it depends on the weather. And when it's a nice cool night there is no getting them inside for anything. But they always wind up inside, even it it's not until 5am. Then they wake up when I wake up. Whatever time that happens.

My first dog that I owned as an adult was a lab/husky mix, and man o man did that dog love the water. I used to take her to Tampa and take her out on my Dad's old boat. We'd find an island and both jump off and swim to the island. I'd sit on the beach and she'd play in the waves. That dog was da bomb.

I'll say this. I've had a Westhighland White Terrier (good dog, very independent) and I've had a Labradoodle (Carl).
Well Carl is my best buddy and the best dog around. Everything about him is great. He's affectionate, very social, doesn't shed, isn't a tiny dog, but still can take up only one cushion on the couch (if you make him), he's intelligent, comes when you call him (unless there's another dog around). He loves the water too. The only thing was he hates the crate. We gave up on that and he wouldn't destroy things. He'd just chill on the couch or look out the window. He's like the best of poodles and labs.
My Terrier, only way he came back was with a slice of cheese in your hand or something.
So yeah, I got a Labradoodle at Meadow Park Labradoodles near Dayton Ohio. He's a Multi-Generational Australian Labradoodle, so pretty much Half Poodle Half Lab. With the tight poodle curls.
Made the whole family happy. My parents adore him (they live next-door) and my wife adores him.
If I have to get another dog, I'd get the same I have now. The only knock I see on him is that maybe his vision isn't that good. He gets real nervous at night. Like he used to not like going on walks at night, and he starts barking at dogs at night when we're on a walk. When he can see them in the day, he wants to meet them. But at night it seems different, so I just keep him away.
Oh, and he's great at the dog park. Loves to Wrestle and play Fetch. But anytime there's a fight or something, he walks away. Only time I've ever seen him get close to a tussle was when this Jack Russell bit his mustache. That really pissed Carl off
EDIT: Even when I go out and bring him in the car and leave him in the parking lot, he's quiet and just looks out at the window at people. He prefers to come in the car than be left at home
