Browns could be juggernaut; 5 bowls that will shape NFL draft By Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks NFL.com http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000...shape-nfl-draftIf you ask any personnel man what he would desire in a rebuilding job, he would request plenty of top draft picks and a tremendous amount of cap space. That's why I've always believed the Cleveland Browns' general manager job would provide a "football guy" with a dream scenario to lead a quick turnaround for one of the NFL's most iconic franchises. Sure, you're taking over a franchise that has only compiled a 4-46 record in its last 50 games, but you have plenty of ammunition to build a juggernaut in the AFC North. Now, I know we normally don't associate the Browns with the word "juggernaut" but an astute evaluator like the team's new GM, John Dorsey, could make it a reality if he can execute a detailed plan that, as he said this past week, helps "reawake this sleeping giant". Although I haven't talked to Dorsey about his plans, I believe he can quickly reverse the Browns' fortunes with a few additions that help the roster move closer to the championship level that used to be the standard for a franchise with eight world championships. The first step in that process has to be finding a franchise quarterback who can lead the team out of the doldrums. In a quarterback-driven league, it is imperative to have a QB1 capable of winning at the highest level. Dorsey alluded to that fact when he addressed what he looks for in a quarterback in his introductory press conference. "Got to win -- No. 1," Dorsey said, per the Akron Beacon Journal. "You have to have the physical skills that we all see. Feet are important in today's football. Accuracy is very important. Do they have the mindset of the head coach? Can they comprehend and digest that playbook? "Do guys naturally gravitate to him from a leadership component? What does he do in adverse situations? How does he react? Can he extend the play? Can he drive it and win it at the end of the game? These are the little things you look for." Based on his criteria and the desire to orchestrate a quick turnaround, I believe the Browns should bypass one of the overhyped quarterbacks in the 2018 class and focus their efforts on landing a veteran signal-caller with a winning resume. Given Dorsey's successful track record with Alex Smith in Kansas City, the veteran could be the perfect guy to man the position until DeShone Kizer grows into a capable QB1 or the team identifies a long-term solution in the upcoming drafts. If Smith, who's signed through 2018, isn't available via trade or as a free agent, the Browns could jump in the anticipated Kirk Cousins sweepstakes or target a mid-level free agent quarterback -- Tyrod Taylor or AJ McCarron would be worth considering, should they hit the open market. Once the QB riddle is solved, Dorsey can turn his attention to the draft and free agency to add more pieces to a roster that needs 10 blue-chip players to compete at a championship level. The Browns currently have five legitimate blue-chip players (Josh Gordon, Joe Thomas, Kevin Zeitler, Joel Bitonio and Jamie Collins) and a few ascending players with blue-chip potential (Myles Garrett and Danny Shelton). Thus, they are really not that far away from fielding a roster that could compete with the elites. The Browns' new general manager prefers to build through the draft with free agency used as a tool to supplement areas that can't be addressed on draft day. Given the current composition of the team's roster, the Browns might be wise to invest in a couple of veteran pass-catchers (wide receiver and tight end) in free agency. The addition of dependable pass-catchers will help the quarterback grow, particularly a young QB1 (see the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams). On the defensive side of the ball, the Browns could use a veteran cornerback to man the No. 1 post and a playmaking safety to complement Jabrill Peppers. While those areas certainly can be solidified on draft day, the Browns' youthful roster would benefit from some veteran leadership and production. On draft day, the Browns should focus on maximizing their Day 1 and Day 2 picks. With five picks in the first two rounds, including four selections that are likely to be within the first 40 picks, the team has an opportunity to land a handful of impact players. The Browns' surplus of early picks could lead to a fruitful harvest. The team could take advantage of deep classes at the running back, cornerback and safety positions in the draft. -- Bucky Brooks. 5 BOWL GAMES THAT WILL SHAPE THE DRAFT Click here to read abowt the Bowl gams.

That's a good and legit read. He mentioned WR. I'm in total agreement here. We CANNOT go into next year with Gordon and Coleman as our 1-2. We gotta get a guy to where we won't miss a beat if Gordon collapses. Enter Jarvis Landry and Robinson. Sign one. The WR and CB spot would be MY choice for BIG FA signings. He mentioned TE? I wouldn't TOUCH the TE spot. Njoku has STUD written all over him. Only TE I would even consider is a Top Blocking.

j/c...
quite frankly I was rather disappointed in the quote that is the subject of this thread.
Even if you think that it can disassociate the players that we do have and quite frankly I think the quote was wrong and now I'm questioning what this guy does know and will this guy look to make an entire overhaul.
1. Shelton...is he not a football player (not Sashi) 2. Ogden, Garrett, Corey...I think all are heck of a football players real players (gotten by Sashi). 3. Kirksey...he's a real football player (not Sashi) 4. Schobert...over achieving and is a football player (Sashi got in the 4th round) 5. Collins...trade that cost us very little - he's a football player.
Coleman, best WR of that class we didn't take him too soon. Devalve n Njoku solid pickups. The 3 mid-late round pick, never liked that investment as it was a weak WR class and to draft 4 I thought was not smart (all done by Sashi) 6. Drango...as mentioned doing great for a 5th round pick.
Peppers ??? we'll see.
Again I don't understand that statement, now if he was talking about the QB position. That is the one area I think Sashi should and can be chastised. Neither Kessler nor Kizer are good football players for their prospects.
As for FA Britt ok but one guy don't a statement like that make. What about Zeitler and Tretter...I thought those two were good pickups.
You add Wentz to our team and we got a lot more wins than 1 in two seasons.
You keep McCown this year and we got at least 5 wins. but probably competing for post season.
Real Players??? young players yes as we reduced our team age by a lot and two seasons in a row played a lot of young players.
So I hope this guy does a great job and is more in tune with Hue on specific player types for him...as long as we keep Hue. Cause the bad thing with that is if we end up getting rid of Hue does that mean we have an overhaul on players as they were sought out to be HUE"s type but might not be a new HC's type.
I thought in this instance Dorsey should have just Shut up cause if I'm a Good (real) Football player drafted the last two seasons...I'm waiting for my contract to run out and get out of here if this is my boss.
I can see putting a burr under the saddle for these guys to play hard till the finish but that I thought was not just insulting to Sashi who doesn't matter cause he's gone but insulting to the players drafted or FA who make up 81% of our current roster and I'm not counting the guys on IR.
Sorry didn't like it at all and it don't tell me we got a new Sheriff in town, tells me we got a anti-charisma guy so far. Hopefully he can change this mistake and it was a MISTAKE...he should have said something like they didn't get players that worked for Hue's system...or something like that...not "REAL" football players.

Here's my fear. Yes, fear. We bypass our 10 year franchise QB for a quick fix that has no chance of getting us to the Super Bowl. A la taking Smith but passing on Rosen or Darnold, condemning us to continual, perpetual hell.

I can't see us passing on a QB at #1 this year

I like Bucky Brooks and that was a pretty good article. I agree that we need veteran leadership. I think we should bring in some guys who have experienced winning so they could be a positive influence on our younger guys.
I do think we should take a qb w/our first round pick, though. I don't think AJ or Tyrod would be the answer at qb. And I doubt Cousins would come here.

AJ McCaron and Tyrod Taylor, blech. Two backups in the league. AJ Mccaron sucks, wtf why. The best thing Sashi ever did was kill that horrible trade.
We have the #1 overall pick and probably the best offensive line we've ever had. But sure let's grab a backup QB and pray Kizer can stop being a dumbass with the football.

I can't see us passing on a QB at #1 this year We will draft a QB, though it could be with our 2nd pick of the first round. Why might we do that? Maybe we like the back from PSU and don't think he will be there at 5-6 or wherever that picks ends. Maybe we have 3-4 QBs we do like and are good with any one of them, so we just catch them on the rebound.

Interesting to read but not a revelation.
Haslam and everybody else knows the Browns have to solve the quarterback position.
Dorsey's marching orders find a QB. The reason Sashi Brown is gone "no quarterback".
If the Giants win and we lose the number one pick is ours.
No trades. No getting cute. Pick a quarterback. You don't waste that pick this year. Rosen and Darnold are bonafide NFL quarterback prospects. I would also look very hard at Allen.
I don't give a crap what Brooks says about quarterback he has been so wrong so often on quarterbacks I pay no attention to him. He knows position players but quarterback?
Now I have no problem bringing a veteran. But get a legit guy. I have no interest Tyrod or McCarron. Alex Smith would fit right in to that slot. He is a proven winner.
The general premise of the article is right.
The Browns could move quick with smart choices. The North is in flux. The Browns can make a move.

I thought this was most interesting from Dorsey:
"Got to win -- No. 1," Dorsey said, per the Akron Beacon Journal. "You have to have the physical skills that we all see. Feet are important in today's football. Accuracy is very important. Do they have the mindset of the head coach? Can they comprehend and digest that playbook?
"Do guys naturally gravitate to him from a leadership component? What does he do in adverse situations? How does he react? Can he extend the play? Can he drive it and win it at the end of the game? These are the little things you look for."
Any thoughts on which of the potential QBs coming out this year exhibit those traits/attributes? I am on the Rosen bandwagon, but not sure he checks off on all of what Dorsey specified. Early yet, I realize that, but that sounds more like Darnold to me.

Why the Browns should trade for Giants CB Eli Apple https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland-brow...Apple-112340454Cornerback Eli Apple was the No. 10 overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He was a very good player as a rookie but off-the-field issues in his second season have left the New York Giants cornerback in the doghouse. The 22 year old has not played since Nov. 12 but it has nothing to do with injuries. Apple was reportedly at the heart of the anonymous players controversy surrounding former head coach Ben McAdoo. He also accused a team leader, safety Landon Collins, of lying about having a conversation about his second NFL season. Thus, the new head coach and General Manager, whoever they end up being, have a decision to make. If Apple's influence has become too great, then the new regime will likely part ways with him. Enter the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are in search of talent and depth at nearly every position. At cornerback, the team has 30-year old Jason McCourty entering the final season of his two-year deal as well as Jamar Taylor, who was traded with a seventh round pick to the Browns for a seventh round pick less than two years ago. The team has an ample amount of salary cap space to take on Apple's early contract. He signed a four-year deal that runs through the 2020 season worth $15,153,320. Cleveland could also offer an appealing trade package. The Browns have twelve picks in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft alone, including five in the first two rounds. However, the cornerback would likely not call for a choice in the first two rounds. There is some precedent to trading players in their rookie contracts. The Buffalo Bills traded wide receiver Sammy Watkins (the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft) after his third season with a sixth round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for a second round pick and cornerback EJ Gaines. The Browns previously sent running back Trent Richardson (the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft) to the Indianapolis Colts for a first round after his second season. The Pennsylvania native has recorded 91 tackles, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, 15 pass deflections and an interception in 23 games.

Dorsey does not appear to be very diplomatic in his approach with the media (whether by design or just lack of polish) so I anticipate him saying a lot of brutally honest and/or dumb things.
Until we start winning, these types of comments will be emphasized by the media.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

in terms of Eli Apple, I thought I read that he's been vastly overrated and has acutually graded out poorly

This whole topic is so overblown.
Dorsey has to find players period. If we had players we would have a better record.
Hue and Dorsey will figure out what needs to happen.
It really is not that difficult.
Target some young veteran free agents that will make an immediate impact.
Utilize draft capital wisely. It is all picking the Best Player Available. Not lip service. Draft the best players you can find. Use the draft picks you have to leverage your position.
When you get better players the record will improve.

I disagree. Andy Reid wanted more power, just like he did in Philly.
I also think that Dorsey and Hue are going to work together. I think they are on the same page. That's going to upset the Hue Hater's, but there really aren't that many of them. They just talk a lot. LOL Yep! Well if the silent majority of Hue like-ers are so happy with him it sure isn't because he's got them fawning over him because of all this winning! In fact they're losing so much they are planning a parade, after 4 more weeks.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

They have to take Rosen or Darnold at #1, I don't care if they end up being busts. You can't win if you don't play. For me they have to take the best quarterback in the draft who won't be a bust...Baker Mayfield. In fact he's the only one I'm certain won't be a best. The others are just a risk.

Love this post, if I could agree with all of it. Hope it is just as stated here.
We are shaky and our record says our blue chippers are not able to carry all the dead wood. Wish it could be better than this group has played. But I think we are going with one man's vision rather than the dumb consensus debates we have placed a premium on.
My greatest single hope? A new year's wish upon a star that Dorsey actually upgrades Hue to a better coach, especially as a field general. He is a weak link who needs a ratchet on his achievement as well IMO. I want him here, but I want him better here.
Root them, Dawgs.

Maybe Dorsey was refering to our wide receivers and secondary and QBs. I do think Kiser is a real player but was in over his head this year but showing improvement. Our linebakers can't cover. I expected more out of Collins. Our TEs have not performed that great unless you are satisfied with average. Coleman has not proved worthy of being a 1st round pick and the rest of the receivers are below average not counting Gordon, and I'm not counting on him past this year. He has a lot to prove off the field and it will be a long off season. We have way too few veteran leaders on the team. Losing has been too easily excepted. Our strengths are our offensive and defensive lines. Dorsey has raised the bar with his comments and now has to back it up. To me that is a refreshing change from Sashi.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

That's what the Browns said in 1999 Texans said in 2002 Raiders said in 2007 Rams said in 2010 even the Chargers in 1998 Redskins in 2012 and Titans in 2015
I AM ALWAYS RIGHT... except when I am wrong.

I took his “real players” comments as the previous regime used an “analytics” based approach, rather than considering the athlete’s pure talent and intangible skills.

Could have sworn I made a post here...was it deleted? If so why??? I deleted it because it was stupid.....lol I am pretty sure you made a post on this topic....not sure why it isn't here any longer?? I see my post is back...possibly cause I asked for the nonsense to stop and get back to football posts. Cleaning up the many back and forth personal stuff was deleted and my post originally was also??? or possibly I just imagined it lol

I don't think Dorsey really believes his comment was true. It's the same as the comments from Hue and Williams. This is about, IMO, a new approach being introduced in football vs what's been done in the past and the ramifications of what could happen if what's new ends up coming to fruition. It's the good ole' boy people being afraid that something different could actually work in the league. Still, it was dumb this to say.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

As stated I think it was a mistake...he probably was talking in regards to why Sashi was fired and why we had a 1 win record in two years so far but fact is he insulted a lot of GOOD PLAYERS without thinking about the ramifications.
Now I haven't heard one word of discontent from that statement but...I know human nature and right now without a better repoire with the players to come. If I were a drafted or FA acquisition I would be wanting to get out as soon as I can after that statement.
It just cannot be good.

Baker Mayfield. In fact he's the only one I'm certain won't be a best. First thing you’ve said that I agree with. I do not think Mayfield will be the best either. Not even close. Wouldn’t want that douche on my team at all.

I hope he's a Brown...will be a good thing for us...but odds are he will not be cause he's a mid first round pick and I doubt we wait that long.
But he is a stud. Douce bag? lol
1. His team mates don't think that at all!
2. His opponents most definitely do.
3. I would only hope that the Ravens, Steelers and Bengals team and fans think hes a douce bag as we consistently kick their butts
The kid will mature. College is so easy to get over RAH RAH about which he most definitely did so. But that passion matured would be very welcomed here, its actually what we need here. HE AIN'T NO MANZIEL... at true Douche bag!

Clever.....Ha Ha. I Usually catch my typos.
And perhaps because Mayfield actually is the best. People who bring up height, don't really get it. Kizer had passes batted/tipped plenty today. And those who compare him to Manziel never really took the time to learn about Mayfield.
