I was watching Bruce Drennen last night and he continues to believe that Joe Borowski was a great signing...

Am I missing something? Why do so many people believe he is so good...

Lets take a look at the stats..

Borowski: 5.12 ERA, 1.45 WHIP (the only two that have a higher WHIP than him are Bob Wickman and Todd Jones),

People will argue that a lot of those runs only came in a few games, but we can't ignore them! I guess if we ignore every bad start a pitcher has, he will be great!

Another argument people will make is he has 28 saves. I would rather have somebody like Chad Cordero who doesn't have as many saves, but won't give up a monster inning like Borowski

Would you trust Borowski in the 9th inning against the Red Sox or some team in the playoffs?

i think he has more saves already then our entire team had last year...I would say it is a great signing. yes, he is not Mariano Rivera of old, but he's been great thus far with only 2-3 blown saves.

Who cares about the ERA, the Whip is what is concerning but so far he has got the job done. How are you going to argue with 28 saves, seriously. You run out of other things to cry about now that Dolan is signing guys?

We have to get there first. And so far, he's helped us get to one of the best records in the league.

Shap should be looking for more help in the bulley regardless of how Boro has been pitching.

I'm going to respect the no name calling rule this board has...

But anyone who judges a CLOSER by their earned run average per 9 innings knows nothing about baseball, therefore their opinion doesn't carry any weight.

Joe was a good signing, compared to what was out thier and our needs, Can you imagion the complaining if we hadnt addressed it, can you imagion all the screaming that would be taking place about Dolan being cheep, we got the best of what was out thier and with payment VS reward / gamble injured.

Joe ERA is mostly due to two bad outing, I know one was against the A's when he gave up like 7 earn runs in the 9th. Other than that he's been pretty dead on,

Are you honestly serious?

I swear, Clevelanders have nothing better to do then to complain. Did you by any chance ever even look at his saves/chances numbers? Last year we were killed by not having a closer. We blew so many saves that it was insane.

Now we go out and get a guy who GETS THE JOB DONE and all I hear are people complaining about it. Just like when Wickman was here. All anyone ever did was complain but I got news for you, he almost always got the job done. Just like Borowski. And yet, all anyone ever does is complain.

I know what you probably want though. You probably wanted Carmona to be back in that role. You know, our #2 starting pitcher who was TERRIBLE as a closer. People never cease to amaze me. You complain about his numbers and yet you forget so quickly what it was like last year when we had noone who could do it.

Bottom line is he gets the job accomplished. Case closed. He was a great signing.

I think people worrie because he is the type who relies on defence to get the job done.
I think it was a good pick up for us.....Last year sucked when it came to the 9th.

Quite honestly,I don't know where the Indians would be without him. When we traded Wickman last year, how many games did the bullpen give up? Too many to mention.Granted Borowski is not the flame thrower so many Tribe fans really want on the pitching staff, but he's getting the job done.Be thankful we have him.

I've defended and stated my opinion so many times about Borowski, I'm not going to worry about it in this thread. What do people not get? You can't judge a pitcher just by his ERA, look at his other stats too. There's some great stats and there's some bad stats with every player.

The idea of the "closer" is so drastically overblown that it is ridiculous. I didn't believe this until recently, but I've seen the error in my thinking, IMO. You want to know who the closers are on this team? Its the Raffys (Perez and Betancourt). If there is a stressful situation, one of those two are coming in to face it. Borowski simply pitches the ninth, starting with nobody on, and will only be pitching the 9th in a game like that, if it does go on to extra innings. JoBo has done the job that he has been asked to do and done it pretty well, IMO. However the real "closers" in the pen aren't getting the credit that they deserve.

I'm getting used to threads like this. Its amazing reading Tribe boards or listening to talk radio. They have the third best record in baseball and people are asking if their collapsing/choking because they are .500 since the All-Star break. Only in Cleveland...

borowski was a good signing, but i wouldn't say he was a great signing...

a great signing is someone who can help you now, and in the future...

i can't see him closing games past this year... not unless the tribe makes the playoffs and he's shutting the door in the 9th inning every time...

The playoffs are in our future. JoBo will help.

i say it was a good signing, because he wasn't brought in to close games, that was supposed to be keith foulke

borowski got asked to do the job, and for the most part, he's done well, 28 saves with 2 full months plus to go isn't bad

but the putting guys on base, and some of these near meltdowns are really a bad sign

because these playoff teams like detroit and boston will make you pay if you put guys on late in the game...

that's where he's only a good sign

but really, think where this team might be without him? had they signed foulke but not signed borowski? who's closing games? betancourt? we might be pretty far out from contention without him...

I seem to remember that he was brought in along with Foulke and they were going to compete for the job. I could be wrong but I don't recall the job being Foulke's no matter what.

well it's always a competition, but foulke had the leg up, had he been healthy, because he was the better closer.

Would you rather have Danny Graves as your closer?

He proved it tonight.... of course we could be better with Gagne and then B setting him up... but I'll settle for that.

Joe job is to SAVE the game. batting averages, ERA, WHIP be damned. The bottom line is all that matters. Did he save the game??? Did he blow the save??? Everything else is a mute point.

How could you not? 29 saves in 32 tries isn't bad at all.

Yet we hear talk of Dotel who only has 10 of 13, Rivera 15 of 17, and others.
