This looks like a decision that Dorsey may have to face.
The Houston pick looms large.
Let's assume we draft a quarterback at ONE.
Let's say are second first round pick is at 4 or 5 and both Barkley and Fitzpatrick are there when that pick comes up.
Most likely Crowell walks in free agency.
We have a need at both positions. Who is the BPA? What position is more important?
Who would have the bigger impact for the Browns?
Can we find those positions with our second round picks?
In the Browns case I say Barkley is the right choice.
Barkley would have a huge impact for the offense. He could provide the needed balance. Play action with Barkley would be a real threat. He would help the quarterback position in a big way.
Nothing against Fitzpatrick or the need of CB/FS.
It is just that Barkley appears to be the BPA.
In addition we may be able to grab a good experienced corner in FA. Or, find a good DB in the second round.
Plus getting a quarterback and Barkley would add some excitement for the fans. Maybe we could score points. Maybe we could grind a team down with a late lead.
The thought of coming out of the first round with Darnold or Rosen and Barkley would thrill me.

if we're assuming Crow walks, then i think you have to consider Barkley.
we've seen these RB's taken high make massive impacts.
Gurley, Gordon, Elliott, AP.
if we're thinking Barkley is in the same class as those RB's, then yea we gotta take him, then address the FS spot in the 2nd round.

Dorsey has never picked a running back in the first two rounds.

I couldn’t agree less ... for a few reasons ...
1. Its way easier to find an impact RB than it is an impact SAFETY .. its not even close ... and this is a deep ass RB draft ....
2. Our D is close ... getting Fitz would go a LONG WAY in helping the D become DOMINANT!!!!

Doesn't it come down to Barkley versus Fitzpatrick as players?
Honestly I don't know a thing about Fitzpatrick. Don't even know if I have seen him play.
I have seen him projected at this spot.
Also seen it said that he could be a safety or corner. You do not see safeties taken very high often.
If Fitzpatrick is really all that good then I can see your point.
I have seen Barkley. Normally I am against taking RB's real high. Barkley appears to be an exceptional back. Possibly in the same class as Gurley.
I can see an argument both ways.

Yep. Also add another CB, and I think we're in business.

I'm watching Bama and Auburn right now. Fitzpatrick is playing everywhere. I'm really not sure what the hell is POSITION will be in the NFL. But there is NO DAMN WAY I'm taking a RB that high in ANY draft. I don't care who he is. I'm really not liking what Barkley has done in the biggest games this year. I'm majorly less than Luke warm on this dude.

It's possible both will be gone when we pick at 4, if we pick at 4. If Fitz is there, I could see us taking him there. If he's not but Saquon is, along with one of the top pass rushers, it would be hard to pass up another legitimate threat from the edge, the premium on those guys is very high. Same with OT, or corner, or WR. Or what if Roquan is there at 4 and Fitz is gone? I could see Dorsey take any of those positions over Saquon. Saquon could be a game changer, and if we were deeper with talent we'd be foolish to pass on him, but not at this point in time with RBs like Guise & Adams there who could be had later. Also, there a distinct possibility we could take Derwin James with our second pick if Dorsey sees the need at that position to be the greatest need. Bottom line, I'll be shocked if we take Saquon, but not disappointed.

When in doubt, go with the non-running back.
Duke Johnson already does a little bit of what Saquon Barkley does. Draft a more traditional runner and we are good to go (assuming Crowell is not re-signed).

This is about exactly what I thought. I would LOVE to add Barkley. He looks to be an impact player and then some. But with the right QB (hopefully), our O-Line, and stronger WR corps (hopefully), any RB we get in the 2nd or later can come in and do good things for us. Only wrinkle I can add to this discussion is Derwin James.

While Barkley is a great all around back he is not nearly as good of runner as Elliott, Fournette, and Gurley. All 3 of those guys averaged over 6 yds a carry in college (Zeke 6.7, Fournette 6.2, Gurley 6.4) while Barkley has averaged 5.7 and has had a few bad games:
'15 Maryland 20/65 3.3 yd avg.
'16 Minnesota 20/63 3.2 yd avg.
Indiana 33/58 1.8 yd avg.
Michigan St. 12/14 1.2 yd avg.
'17 Indiana 20/56 2.8 yd avg.
OSU 21/44 2.1 yd avg. Rutgers 14/35 2.5 yd avg.

I admit I haven't studied either player, but have seen both play. I would love to see either as a Brown.
The question for me is this; is Fitzpatrick + 2nd round RB going to have more impact than Barkley + 2nd round FS?
I don't know the answer, but my guess is Fitz + RB.

Williams will use Fitzpatrick.
Hue will NOT use Barkley.
End of thread?

Williams will use Fitzpatrick. Like he does with Peppers? I don't think Williams will be here next month. But I'd love to see Derwin, Jabrill and Garrett on blitz packages. The stunts and twists you could pull with them makes me a little hot and bothered if we're being frank.

Don't you feel that Crow will insist on not signing? Maybe Dorsey will use him to trade for a package. Crowell seems to want to share his situation and feelings in the media. Not where I want to see us negotiate.
Marginal output from him IMO. Would it be hard to match those numbers?

Easy choice....Fitz.
Not that Barkley isn't a great player, but this is a deep RB class. We can get a back near as good in the 2nd round, if not as good. Watch the Georgia backs this weekend. Chubb and Michel are good.
No second round safety is nearly as good as Fitz.
Heck, we can get a good back in the 3rd round.

I like the idea, The #5 pick, I'll just assume that. But I want to play it another way, Chances are the team may take a QB, and the board can't agree, so I'm going to play Assume the team picked your personaly least favorite Qb. at #1, what do you do at #5, and also, I'm going to why not assume that Crowell's status is still unsure.
Personally I'm leaning towards a specific strategy. Obvious gift BPA's still available aside,
At 5 I want to find a Best Cb available, then I want to go offense until pick 114 on, from there you can take all the project safeties and corners you want.
And when I say offense, I'm thinking, Rb, TE, 2nd Rb, 2nd QB, and Wr, As I think the Oline is fine for a year The Dline is fine for a year and the Linebackers may be tuff to find an improvement, just another body = to what you already have, by the time you get down where you'll be selecting.
So for me this is about the #5 overall pick. I'm leaning best Joe Haden replacement I can find. ( Jamar Taylor is my eldest starter, but I need him for at least 2 more years.)
And Asuming the Browns just took my least favorite qb at #1 overall. And kept my least favorite coach, And signed my least favorite vet Qb.
At #5 what would I take, ? (I want Corner more than safety because, well because I don't have the luxury of picking safety because the corners are too inconsistent, would be better with help.
(There's another reason for this strategy, it's what the Browns did the last 3 drafts. They've already done front 4, linebacker, the last 3 drafts. Xavier, Orchard, Nassib Schobert, Ogbah and Garrett.
Those are picks in the top 114ish, that's 4 rounds of the old 28 team league, 112 picks, The talent falls off after that.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

I know Fitzpatrick is highly regarded and so is Barkley.. but I think we can find a good RB later.. and if we take the QB at #1... I'm tempted to trade back out of #5 and take Courtland Sutton, 6'4" WR out of SMU.. projected as a later first round pick, collect some more picks and get the big time WR to go with our new "big time" QB... It is not a deep WR group this year but a couple at the top are very good so if we plan to add a WR, it has to be early.
I would love to have a great FS.. but I'm sick of watching our offense go nowhere and scare nobody... and I'm sick of a 10 point deficit in the 2nd quarter being "insurmountable"..

If you are thinking he will be there in the 2nd, I think James is gone by pick 15 at the latest. Picking him at 4 might be a bit of a reach. I might try to trade back a few slots before taking him.

Fitzpatrick has to be the guy over Barkley.
I'd take a long look at Peppers at RB this offseason.

There are many Quality RB's in this draft (Barkley, Chubb, Love K. Johnson etc. ...) but there are only what I would call elite top 5-10 Safeties, Minka Fitzpatrick and Derwin James, I would be happy with either one ... JMHO

If Hue stays, we don't really need half-backs, just a couple of pass blocking full-backs in the 6th round should do us.
