bonefish is a very good poster who doesn't like all of this agenda crap.

Can you guys get off of the "Tar and Feather Hue" crap on this particular thread and just talk about vet QBs? Please?

There are Hue threads.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I know you want to make Hue the victim again, but AJ McCarron is a vet QB. He's played in the league for either 3 or 4 years depending on the ruling next month.

It's ironic you reference Haslem comments now about the QB selection but disregard all the comments from Sashi and Haslem over the past two years on how integral Hue was in the QB selection. Funny how that happens.

Anyways, believe it or not folks, I agree with Vers on this Vet QB thing. If it's Darnold, someone like an Alex Smith or Tyrod Taylor- type will be signed to bridge the gap.

If it's Rosen, a journeyman/spot-starter could be the type of player acquired. We had this in McCown, but whatever.

It's a matter of who is more ready to play, IMO.

If Josh Rosen is NFL-ready, do we need a "bridge" QB, or veteran QB? It seems to me you might want a McCown type even if Rosen can start right away, just to be around in the QB room and on the sideline. But if its Darnold we decide on, then I think you need a guy to play the position for a year or two while Darnold gets up to speed. Someone like Alex Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Moore, or even McCarron.

Eli would fit the bill of a vet 'bridge' QB. How much does he have left in the tank is a valid question...

Vice Versa. I feel given the choice between only those two, Darnold and Rosen, Rosen would need more time to grow.

Veteran Quarterback.

How about Jay Cutler. Nobody is mentioning Jay Cutler, if our coaches are really, good, this should be a fit. At least they can't say he's not a real player.
He's not 35 so he's got 4 more years until he'll be 40 and too old, and if the Browns are going to make the playoffs they will want someone they can count on.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Your bridge QB should also be a mentor for the rookie (and Kizer, I assume). Not certain that Cutler is that type of guy...

Rosen is way more pro-ready than Darnold.

Some good football minds on who we should take between the two, but I don't think any of those minds will disagree w/Rosen being more pro-ready.

Depends who you ask ... I would say Brian Hoyer in 2014 before the bottom dropped out, or maybe Derek Anderson in 2007.

I think Eli would be a good bridge QB. It wasn't his fault that the rest of the offense was on injured reserve. His arm is still live and everyone forgets his consecutive game streak was only broken because of a bad coaching decision. He's still got at least a couple of years left.

I would doubt he would come here though. I think he'd want to finish with another Super Bowl ring.

No problem with having a couple. I would think one at the top of the draft, then a project in the 4th or 5th makes more sense...kinda like RG3/Cousins.

I'd be all for trading a second for Alex Smith and letting Rosen or Darnold sit and learn for a year, possibly two. Both Rosen and Darold are only 20.

I don’t think so. In that scenario I see him as #3. Why keep Hogan or Kessler instead?

I think a team may even throw us a bone for Kessler. I still think he could be a good back-up on the right team. He just needs time and patience.

Hence the time and patience.

Kessler shouldn't have been playing as early as he was either, but injuries forced him into game too early.

You make him a clipboard holder with a "just don't lose the game for us" game plan and he can be productive with his efficiency. Hopefully you have a great running game that can defeat the extra guys in the box he'll see. He'll beat that once he gets his confidence back.

I disagree. He is a terrible qb. He has a weak arm, lacks confidence in his own abilities, crumbles under pressure, and holds the ball way too long

Yes, but his confidence will get better and that will help him get rid of the ball quicker.

He'll always have a weak arm and that is why he's destined to be a clipboard holder.

None of this will happen overnight, but a team that makes him a #3 and doesn't expect too much, too soon, can develop him into a #2.

I am not trying to say anything negative about anything. A.J. McCarron is a veteran QB who is potentially on the market. Our head coach likes him. The GM has said he wants to get players that fit the head coach's system. The math is not that hard.

It's not like I'm saying they'll signing A.J. McCarron to be a franchise QB. Just a guy that might be able to start several games.

Personally, I'm against adding a veteran who'll likely end up starting.

I'd like to get someone like Chad Henne, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Mark Sanchez, Chase Daniels or Kellen Clemens - All of which have either spent time previously developing a young quarterback, or who have spent a lot of time with a high end quarterback/Offensive mind.

We've got two young quarterbacks to develop, and they both need a lot of reps to get there. Adding someone who'll quickly flick Hue's "Get desperate for wins" switch and chew up the reps just doesn't fuss me: Same as Brock Osweiler getting the majority of reps last year, only to stink up the preseason and ensure Kizer with further behind than he could have been.

I don't understand the fascination with trying to bury Kizer on the depth chart or outright force him off the roster. Worst case scenario - Kizer gets 10 games before the rookie gets the final six.

Are we really going to go spend $40/$50M, for a guy with a vested interest in starting, just for those meaningless games prior to the #1 overall pick undoubtedly taking the reigns in 2019?

Screw that. Go get someone who isn't going to start and knows it, and knows he's getting paid $3M+ per year just to offer guidance to the young quarterbacks.

That very well could be the way we go about this.

Cousins? We don't go QB
Smith? I don't like that one.

I don't want ANY QB that will hold us back from rolling with Rosen or Darnold.

People thinking we're going to sit Rosen or Darnold all year need to realize we WILL NOT sit the #1 pick that long.

Hence my desire for Mccarron. Solid VET. Knows Jackson's Offense. Can start 4 or 5 games if we sit Rosen or Darnold for any period of time.

That's a solid ass QB Room.

I disagree. I think the jump between college football and the NFL game is so great for QB, that it is better for most rookies to spend time watching and learning. It allows them to be part of the process, see the speed of the game, sit in on the game preps and reviews seeing a veteran do it. It allows them to work with coaches between and during games on the theory and mechanics.

I doubt Rogers nor Garappolo would have been as good so quickly without the time carrying a clipboard. Look how long it has taken Bortles to reach his level having been thrown into the fire without time to adjust. Kizer and Kessler were definitely thrown into the fire too quickly. I don't want to see us ruin a high end prospect by impatiently starting him immediately.

There are examples of guys who didn't need the time, Wilson and Prescott come to mind, but I honestly think that is the exception. Rosen will require less time than Darnold, but I would still want him to carry a clipboard and slowly work him into the role.

You're actually agreeing with me.

I wouldn't sit Rosen for more than 2 or 3 games. As soon as we see a comfort level, turn the Keys to the City over to him.

Same thing with Darnold. Maybe 5 games if needed.

- he knows Hues system ...
- hes a vet but wont need to be promised a starting job just a shot at it ... so WHEN Kizer or the rookie prove they are better they can start
- if he was our qb this year we would have won 5 or 6 games so that should be next years floor ...

The qb spot KILLED US last year ....

I'm in agreement with your post. Possible destinations where he could start: Jets, Broncos, Jax...
