Yes, and he's worth it. We need to win some games while the QB of future marinates. Smith would be real expensive, but if Gruden is worth 100 million, what's a real player in his prime worth.....GO Browns

ESPN reported today his contract was heavily back-loaded to allow for them to pay the 3 years to Del Rio and if he doesn’t produce well he’ll never see most of that 100 million.

Dorsey or no, Smith won't come here any more than Cousins would. Will the Chiefs let him walk anyway?

Smith will be traded. KC has already stated that they are willing to trade him. They love what they have seen in Maholmes. ( knew when I saw him last year that someone would be willing to take the risk on this kid).
What is Smith worth? He is worth what someone is willing to give up for him. Fair market value.
There will be teams like Denver, Buffalo, Jets, Cardinals all in the market.
If the price is real steep I would go another route. I think McCown is fine for the role as bridge quarterback. Bradford would work for me as well. Even Keenum.

If I’m the Chiefs, I eat the 20 million cap hit and don’t let Smith out of town.

I was kinda hoping that the Titans would win today. If the Chiefs lose, there's less pressure to keep Smith and a better chance we could work a trade. Based on what I'm seeing, I don't think Smith will be an option.

I think they HAVE to trade Smith.. have any of you seen the Chiefs salary cap situations? http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/cap/Cap Space (w/All) $-8,514,283 Umm.. that is NEGATIVE 8 Million By contrast.. The Browns.. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/cap/Cap Space (w/All) $107,671,229

What kind of GM would put a team in a cap situation like that? A GM with a veteran team, and Super Bowl ambitions.

That’s something that hasn’t been addressed on here ... WHAT OUR WE WILLING TO GIVE UP FOR SMITH??? ... The Niners got two 2nd round picks for him .... Will it take at least that to get him now? .. will it take more? ... will it take less? ... WHAT DO WE PAY FOR HIM? ... where do u draw the line? ... Do u give up a 1st? ... a 1st and a 2nd? ... two 2nd’s? ... Play Bob Barker .... At his price tag, it's a buyer's market. The Chiefs have some cap trouble and Mahomes is the heir apparent. If they keep him, they get nothing for him next year. I wouldn't give more than a 2nd rounder. A team like Denver might pay more than that but Denver would also have trouble fitting him under the cap. If he is willing to sign a longer term back loaded deal, more teams would be in the market, but with all the QB's that are available I wouldn't trade the farm for him.

You have 3 second round picks; offer the 2nd or 3rd of them and a later round pick either from this year or next. I'd have no problem with this for Smith and still take Rosen or Darnold at #1. You could start winning in the short-term with the long-term secured. We reportedly offered a 2nd and 3rd round pick for a backup; AJ McCarron. I hope whoever offered that won't be involved in any trade talks with KC. If Sashi Brown purposely botched that deal, we owe him a debt of gratitude, IMO. No doubt. A 2nd and 3rd for McCarron is/was absurd.

Speaking of GM's leaving you in a bad way.. how come there are 36 ex Browns players playing in the playoffs right now?
Apparently we've drafted good players?
Just rhetorical..

Well, Alex Smith is definitely gonna get traded or cut.
He’s a perfect bridge QB.

True, but as long as he’s a bridge to 2-3 wins, then It’s all good.

I don't like some of the trade talk that's happening. If the team is really planning to build around a #1 pick at QB, dropping a 2nd round pick for an Alex Smith one year rental is an insane cost. The Cardinals and Broncos are both expected to have interest, which will drive the price up. Alex Smith isn't Tom Brady - he's only 33, turning 34 in May. If the Browns get Alex Smith, I expect it to be a multi-year commitment, and no QB taken in the 2018 draft unless someone unexpectedly falls as a can't-pass opportunity.

I would give up a 2nd and a 3th round pick for Smith, and I would still draft a QB at number one. I also have to call bullcrap of the people who are claiming that whoever we draft should be starting later in his rookie year. Whoever we draft can keep their ass on the bench until they can beat out Smith for the starting job. I don't care if that's one year, two years, or three years down the road. You don't start the young guy until he beats out the vet PERIOD.

I know a lot of Browns fans want to draft a QB at #1 or #4 but who is the QB coming out of the draft ready to step in and lead an NFL team that has set records for being losers? I am not 100% sold on any of them. I want the Browns to trade for Smith or sign Cousins. Smith seems more logical because Cousins wouldn't want to come to the Browns. If we sign Smith we know he is ready to play and play at a high level for anther 2 to 3 years at least. If we get Smith I would be willing to spend our picks at 1 and 4 on players that can be impact players. We need to start winning now, I am so tired of losing year after year. That would leave us with Kiser as our backup and allow him to sit and learn behind Smith. I know most on here won't agree with me but I am ready to start winning.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

Chokey Reid opened the door. He and Smith could both be done in KC.

You don't start the young guy until he beats out the vet PERIOD. Man, a second and a third seems like a lot to me. I think by taking on Smith's contract could lessen the return we'd give KC. Also, if reading this correctly, if Smith was cut, it is only $3.6M in dead cap for KC. Teams might just wait for him to be released instead of trading significant assets for him. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/alex-smith-3337/But the Browns aren't in a position of strength among teams that free agents would look at first. I'm still not sure if KC is willing to part with Smith. He had a pretty good year. I guess it's all about where they think Mahomes is in terms of development.
At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

GMDawg, I’m with you, we saw what happened this past year when you play a rookie to early.
Glw12.... I actually do not have a problem with that depending on who the QB is that we get. If it’s Cousins I say yes, Smith I’d say still draft a guy and do what GMDawg said.
I just got a feeling from what I’ve read about Dorsey and some of the draft rumors that Allen is gonna be Dorsey’s guy. He seems to fit what Dorsey has looked for in QBs in the past. It’s just a hunch. So don’t nobody get all up in arms about it. But if Allen is his guy then he will need to sit.

But look at scenario #2.
Does that include Rosen or Darnold?
We're not gonna sit either of those guys all year.
Hence, why Smith? Firstly, no matter how high the draft pick, no matter what you think of them, there's no 100% guarantee he'll be a franchise QB. Yet if you look at my scenario, what I would be willing to give up if we draft Rosen would be far less than what I'd be willing to give if we did draft him. How your team values him is highly dependent on your situation. I honestly don't feel you could even get Smith for what I was willing to give if you draft Rosen under my scenario and I agree we probably couldn't land him at that cost. Most likely we will go in another direction.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Everyone needs to keep in mind if we don't hit the ground running next year the pressure to fire Hue will increase. We can't afford to start 0-4 or 1-4 or the pressure on Hue will mount. A veteran QB and added playmakers will increase our chances of success. I doubt Hue or Dorsey want to depend on a rookie QB to turn us around. Smith or Cousins can do that if we spend our draft picks wisely along with adding some free agents. I am all about winning as soon as we can.

We can't afford to start 0-4 or 1-4 or the pressure on Hue will mount. I expect a 2-3 start will be the minimum to keep the hounds at bay. (Without knowing of course what our roster will look like at season start). A vet QB should help us start out quicker...

I really don't think the whiners could be crying much more than they are now and it still hasn't done them any good to this point. I'm not sure a slow start next season will be something to cause Haslam to pacify them. Or give them a pacifier either. lol

Smith's value a number of years ago was a 2 and 3rd...BUT given by KC who was picking where?...IF we gave up a 2nd, like 33 that's steep...IF Dorsey did it I wouldn't whine. Some posters are typing...if we don't go 2-3 or whatever, pressure on Hue...damn, gentlemen- you are talking about a team that has gone 1-31 in two years AND you're demanding X kind of start....give me a break....the schedule NEXT year is harder than our 0-16 in my opinion....let's get one victory before we ask for the MOON....I'd sit our rookie number 1 all year IF the coaches thought that was smart...Lastly, I think I'd CUT or trade Kizer...he had all year to develop and he STUNK, throws great then stinks it up and judgement earns a near ZERO....JMHO, and I'm old guy who actual saw our 64 championship on TV.....can't believe we've tumbled this low.....GO Browns!!!!!

No rush.
I have looked at Allen just a little bit, but what I have seen, I don't like. Seems like a poor man's Deshone Kizer and I really don't want us to draft him #1 overall. Feels to me that he'd be a Hue pick.

I'd like to see a Vet come in. If we could get Cousins, we wouldn't need to draft a QB. If not and we get say Smith, then we can take a QB in the first two rounds. I was pretty sold on Rosen and Darnold but after reviewing tape and hearing Rosen doesn't want to be here, I have changed my mind. I don't think there is a #1 pick value on any of these QBs.
I think Darnold has a lot of upside but will need to develop slowly. I think Rosen is the most ready and fits the ideal mold better. Size wise I like Allen but he's a second rounder at best. So in my opinion Mayfield is the wildcard.
Mayfield has a lot of heart and fights to win. He's fairly accurate, a good scrambler, and can make all the throws. His biggest knocks are maturity and size. I'm okay with his size, but I don't want another headcase. If these guys can put his maturity issues in check, I think he's your guy but hopefully in the mid first round.
I think all 3 QBs on the team could benefit greatly from a better QB coach. There is no whisperer here. One, two or all three of these guys will be back for at least the spring camps. We wasted a year playing Kizer, it would be stupid not to try and fix him in the offseason even if he ends up as the third backup.
Ideally to fix the situation once and for all I'd like to get Cousins, draft Mayfield, keep Kizer and possibly Hogan. Before any of that we need to address the QB coaching.
