probably because we've already had this discussion in the baltimore thread.

it didn't get past us, but it clearly got past you.

I have a question. Back in the day, the unemployment numbers weren't very accurate. That is because once a person's unemployment benefits expired, they were no longer included in the unemployment percentage.

Is that still the case or have they corrected that dumb ass oversight? I ask because that has severely skewed the percentages in the past and the political innuendo that came out of those numbers in the 70s and 80s was a farce.

I figured. If that is still true, I wouldn't put too much stock into those numbers. There are people who have been unemployed for years and years and years.

I guess they don't count. rolleyes

it depends.

you have people who got fed up with trying to find work, people who just don't care about finding work, students, stay at home wives/husbands, etc.

so there's a lot to take into account.

I agree w/all of that, Swish. My point is that saying the unemployment rate is down is not such a great statistic.

I think I'll borrow one of Diam's sayings.........Stats are for...........

and my normal reply would that while stats don't tell the whole story, it gives us a baseline to start with in our discussion.

for example, norway had an average unemployment rate of 3.3% between 97-2013.

right now it sits at 4.2%, and people over are upset with the government for that.

so now that we have the stats, we have to figure out what it means.

but then if people are giving opinions with no facts to back them up - for example, like the unemployment rate - then we're in a completely different problem.

how does this relate to the thread?

Dawg said to thank Trump. but i pointed out very accurately that the trend of AA unemployment has been going down since OBama was president, and that the unemployment for Americans as a whole was going down under Obama, which continued into the Trump presidency.

I had a really good job two and a half years ago. I lost it for reasons a bit beyond my control and only now just started again full time. It took moving to a different state (a financial nightmare!) and dozens and dozens of resume rewrites and cover letters and interviews and literal tears.

I collected unemployment, it ran out, I struggled and struggled.

Finding a job IS a job and it's not fun at all. You never know what an employer is looking for. You may have it all down on paper and they hire someone else. I applied for a shipping manager position and have over ten years experience in managing people and putting processes in place, dispatch. Ten years, not much maybe but something. They hired some young girl, fresh out of college, no relative education to shipping, no experience in shipping period and no experience in managing people or processes. SMH. I know this because I got hired as a laborer in that place (I was good enough for that at least!) and then let go (go figure) I was a laborer in the same company in the same department and I met her. Good for her though right?

On an unrelated note, my wife, who has a masters in her field and over 20 years experience got passed over for a promotion for a younger lady with NO experience in the field, NO experience in managing people (but my wife does).

I get frustrated when I hear people yell or complain, or say "why don't you just get a job?!" If it were just that easy. If you just picked one off a shelf. It's difficult, it's disheartening. It can make you lose a lot of confidence in yourself.

Any way. I'm glad to hear unemployment is down. I sincerely hope those that are unemployed and giving an honest effort to find a job do so. And lastly, none of this, none of it had or has anything to do with Trump being president or even Obama for that matter.

No doubt it isn't easy.

Sure, anybody can go get a job. The question what kind of job? Once you are in a job, it's hard to seek a better job.

I fully understand your point and plight.

As long as stats like unemployment are calculated the same way every time, then the trends or the direction of movement is far more important than the actual number. For the reasons stated, the actual number isn't all that accurate because there are so many variables.

Let me get this straight these guys praise Trump for lowering the unemployment rate from around 4.7 to 4.1 and theyt ignore that Obama lowered it from over 10% to around 5% before you even lost your job a couple of years ago? Otay

Some of you have no clue what it was like over the last 40 years with the constant corporate cutbacks and offshoring done in the 70's 80's and 90's. And No Crap! It's hard work to change careers and find work. We've all had to do it and many have had to move multiple times different states, and yeah, it sucks. For these guys throw praise on Trump for a less than a 1% change in unemployment is laughable. It was on Obama then and now it's on Trump!

funny how PS can admit when he's wrong, while you and Diam continue on saying wrong stuff in every thread.

Trump lowers the unemployment rate by a few tenths. Hooray for the golden dome. Thanks Don!

Obama lowers unemployment from 10% to 5%. "Those numbers are skewed." Otay.

When Obama took office the unemployment rate was 7.9%... So he doesn't get to own the unemployment rate until it peaks and starts back down?

And I will say this (and for the record, no President "owns" the unemployment rate, there are a lot of influencing factors outside of the President's control)... but it's like weight loss.. losing the last 5 pounds is significantly harder than losing the first 20...

For Adult women.

In January, 2010 the unemployment rates for most major worker groups—adult men (10.0 percent), teenagers (26.4 percent), blacks (16.5 percent), and Hispanics (12.6 percent)—showed little change. The jobless rate for adult women fell to 7.9 percent, and the rate for whites declined to 8.7 percent.

Yippeee! Trump shaved less than a % off unemployment. Our hero! Obama reduces it by 5% and it's a mirage.
