On the April 19th, draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. announced plans for his eventual retirement on ESPN's NFL Live broadcast. His announcement shocked the Pro Football world.

While sparring with fellow draft analyst Todd McShay, Kiper made the following declaration: "If Jimmy Clausen is not a successful quarterback in the NFL, I'm done. That's it. I'm out."

McShay asked the following question: "What is your time frame, Mel? When do we make that assessment?"

Kiper answered "I want eight years."

McShay countered, "It will only take three years, Mel. We can tell inside three years."

Kiper replied, "I want eight."

See ya Mel, cause Jimmy Clausen is not successful

I'm glad you posted this only out of hope that every time Kiper (I guess McShay too) gets mentioned in another thread, people won't turn it into a Kiper &/or McShay bashing thread. They can just come here to complain about them.

I like and respect Mel, in spite of his being a Ravens fan. He turned his passion for the draft into a career to an extent that celebrity status came with it. I think every one of us who waste time on message boards talking about the draft before the playoffs are even over, OFTEN times while at our jobs, wish we could be making a living that way.

It's never going to be exact. If it was, and someone regularly produced mock drafts that actually came true every year, they would have surpassed Mel as the biggest name in the draft-analyzing biz.

Rant over. Clausen WAS drafted in 2010. Maybe this is Mel's fairwell tour!

I wasn't bashing Kiper or any of those guys. I actually just posted this to show how even experts don't really know what is going to happen.

Umm.. I recall Kiper saying "stay away from Eddie George, he runs too upright, he'll never amount to anything, the guy you want to draft is Lawrence Phillips..."

There are only 32 experts. They are the ones who make seven figure salaries to make those decisions in the NFL. Everybody else is obviously unqualified or they would have one of those jobs. In case anyone has missed it, Kiper has been doing this since Jesus was a Corporal and he's never been able to even sniff an NFL FO.

There are reasons for that.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

He’s not really a scout, he’s a draft analyst. Like the analytics man for the draft. But IMO I think he’s overated and if I remember, didn’t a GM or coach call him out once on air for the pick they made?

Outside of his 5-6 Mock Drafts, I don't think Kiper puts in half the effort that he use to put in when he first came on the seen.

He's gotten, not lazy, but I think content with his going through the motions effort.

Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!
Go Browns!
