Winslow cleared; Baxter, Bentley still out
Zac Jackson, Staff Writer
07.27.2007
Kellen Winslow is cleared and ready to practice, but LeCharles Bentley and Gary Baxter are not.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage said Bentley and Baxter will begin training camp on the active-physically unable to perform (PUP) list, though he said Baxter should be activated early next week.

Bentley is in Berea with the Browns today, and he'll be present for some meetings over the next four weeks. Savage said Bentley will continue to rehab away from the team as well, and the Browns will re-evaluate his status in four weeks.

"He's going to continue on the rehab course," Savage said. "We are not activating him ready for practice. As it stands right now he's going to be here for a number of the meetings.

"We'll see where we are four weeks from now in terms of LeCharles passing a physical to get on the football field. He's not quite ready to put on equipment and go out there and practice on the football field."

Savage said Bentley had an MRI Friday, but said a physical to determine whether or not he was football-ready would be put off for four more weeks.

"Until today we had not seen LeCharles," Savage said. "He looks great. He looks like he's in pretty good shape from a physical standpoint."

Savage said Winslow passed his physical Friday and was cleared for practice. He said Baxter "probably could pass today, but we're going to hold him through the weekend."

Savage said he had "nothing significant" to report regarding contract negotiations with Brady Quinn other than the two sides had discussions yesterday and planned to have more, probably as soon as tonight. He said he hopes the signings of Joe Thomas and Eric Wright, leaving Quinn as the team's only unsigned draft pick, would expedite the process.

"It's a little more difficult to be a holdout when you don't have someone else holding out," he said.

The Browns took the field for their first official training camp practice at 3:45 this afternoon. The only other player who wasn't set to participate in camp is DeMario Minter, who was in a boot due to a foot injury.

Oh goody, I bet you're just so proud!!

As it should be.....Winslow has had 6 months to come back from his surgery, and re Bentley it was reported that he would not participate in the early camp........take your time LeCharles, don't push it. (and learn the playbook!)

For some reason it feels like a lot of distance and contention between the FO and Bentley...maybe it's just me

I am glad that they are holding Bentley back. I honestly think that is the best decision. It's good to hear about Bentley and Baxter hopefully they will get that Quinn deal done tonight

Great to hear Baxter will probably see the field Monday, absolutely amazing!!!

What week did his injury happen? And he's already about ready to get back out there, just incredible.

I personally would love to know what the heck went on when LeCharles got injured last year. I mean he basically alienated himself from the team for a whole year. It's almost as though the Browns wrote him off, and they still seem as though they don't care whether they get him back or not.

I just think the whole situation smells a bit fishy.

I'm mixed with my feelings about this part:

Quote:

Bentley is in Berea with the Browns today, and he'll be present for some meetings over the next four weeks. Savage said Bentley will continue to rehab away from the team as well, and the Browns will re-evaluate his status in four weeks.

Surely his doctors have the best course of rehab for him - but does home offer something that Berea does not? I'd like to see him being with the team every day - rehabbing his knee at the facility. Does LCB feel he could get greater progress working out in Columbus or Phoenix (I think that's where he said he was)?

There were obvious tensions between him and the team with the lack of communication. Why not bury it and be at the facility every day rehabbing and learning???

His problem is not with the team,it's with the staph on the team,badda-boom.
I wouldn't get too worked up about it.Some people like to do things they're own way, perhaps LCB is one of those.

Good patience on holding back on LB.......

Although I was under the impression that Rac wanted to hold back KW2....

Was it mentioned that they were wanting to give his knee easy time.....So not to have it getting too much activity ?......

I believe it is a requirement that players who report to camp at less than 100% MUST be put on PUP until they can clear/pass a physical... I think that was the only reason for his designation to it.

So Bentley won't be back with us until late August probably. I think he'll play this year, but not until after week 6 (we'll probably put him on the PUP). Baxter will probably make the active roster for week 1 it sounds like. I can't believe he's gonna be active for TC next week, that's just crazy.

Listen to Savage's presser on Bentley, and you will get some answers about the Browns and Bentley's relationship and also why he will be rehabbing a lot elsewhere.

Its posted on the official site.

I just got back from camp and was surprised to see Winslow out there,, Ladies and gentleman,, if today is any indication of his ability to be ready (and it may or may not be),,, then we are in for some fun watching this guy,,

He looked better today than at anytime except his very first camp.. and frankly, I was at that one also and it doesn't appear to be any different,,

This is gonna be fun..

I didn't see Minter, Bentley or Baxter out there. I didn't even see them standing around to be honest..

But to be fair, the place was jammed and it was hard to see anything. I took some pics, I'll post them in a Photobucket tomorrow and give out a link.

I also took some video which I will post also.

Ok,,, couple of impressions,, Keep in mind, I coudn't see much due to the crowds.. I'm 6'2" and believe me, I felt short today LOL

Impressions by Jack Handy (sorry, had to do it)

Mr. Thomas is NOT a fat man.. this guy is chiseled...

Winslow looked fast and fiesty.. lots of energy and the legs looked great,, strong

This one will kill you guys,, Saw Braylon go up for a pass and it was a bit of a stretch,,, he made it and took off with the ball nicely (remember, no pads and nobody defending himsto take it with a grain of salt) But he looked ready to play.

Chase Pittman is a very aggresive guy... VERY! No pads and no real contact and he about took somebodys head off..... I could not tell who it was.

Pool kinda looked lazy but that's probably an unfair assessement.. it seemed like everytime I looked over at him, he was not in the mix... and not expected to be either. so like I said, that might have been unfair of me.

I looked for but didn't see Bentley and Baxter.. Neither of them were anywhere within my field of vision. Again, that might have been due to the crowds.. Also I didn't see Dimario Minter either. I was hoping to.

Frye and Anderson looked like Frye and Anderson.. virtually no change from last season.. But here's the deal,, Dorsey looked good.. Go figure!

Cribbs was lined up as a receiver with Kenny Wright on him.... Cribbs blew past him in a flash... looked like Kenny was lost.... that wasn't a good sign.

Here's some off the wall stuff about camp:

Odd sighting,,, a lady was trying to get into camp with what looked like a picket sign,,, but what it was was a big number 57... the guards wouldn't let her in with it and she went ballistic...Dropping F bombs like there was no tomorrow... it was rather funny to see her get hauled off...LOL Stupid! Just stupid.

Very disappointed in the food arrangments.. No Beer, No Hot Dogs, no soft pretzels, just water and some soda and snacks like candy bars (snickers was the only one I saw) and various chips and pretzels..

Donato's pizza was there, but I tried one and to be honest, I like Donatos,, but this was just flat out bad.....

MBNA was giving away big towels if you apply for a credit card.

They moved things around bigtime from last year.. the big tent is down closer to the main building,,,

Speaking of the main building, it's now named the Casey Coleman Field House.... I hadn't noticed that last season so I'm assuming it's new,.,, kinda classy if you ask me...

Anyway, down by the tent there was what appeared to be all the refreshments that I like, but it was off limits to all but VIPs...

I was asked to complete a survey... they asked me questions, I verbally answer them and I got a poster (that I haven't unrolled yet)..

Dumbest question in the survey: What do you like about the Browns Online experience (PPE, you will love this) I told them that Dawgtalkers.net was superb,,, the kid said, you mean Clevelandbrowns.com.. I said NO,, that site sucks since you guys changed it last year,,,, it doesn't stay up during peak traffic times such as the draft and you have a bunch of crazy kid posters that ruined the old dawgtalk section...

So then he asked for the URL again and I gave it to him.... seemed like a nice young man,, I suspect we'll have a new member later tonight...LOL

That's all I got for now...

LMAO!!

Once you get caught up on the threads here you'll see why you didn't see Bentley, Baxter or Minter.... all are being held out of practices for a while.

Did you see Eric Wright at all?
