Nah, probably the most expensive meal I ever sprang for was about $100 before drinks at the Springfield Grille ] I miss the Springfield Grille Finally made it out there and the food was exceptional! My wife and I shared the Chicken Marsala and Veal Truffle Ravioli - very well done (and I'm a chef). Nice wine selection (nice glasses too, which seems to be lost on a lot of upscale restaurants). Ordered a dessert with chocolate, peanut butter mousse and an oatmeal crust... wow. A special treat I thought was very cool was Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" played on piano lol. It will be a go-to since my son is 15 minutes away at YTown State. Glad I read this thread!

You know for the life of me I don't understand this thread. I've paid for expensive meals that sucked and far cheaper meals that were great.
So what's the point for the most expensive? To see who has the biggest swinging wallet in the room? lmao

So what's the point for the most expensive? To see who has the biggest swinging wallet in the room? lmao Did you read my initial post? I actually stated it wasn’t about who has the biggest wallet. Nor did I want it to become about that. You’re now the first person in the thread to change it to that. I was just curious. That curiosity was sparked the morning I created the thread by me getting reservations at a very difficult to get reservations at restaurant here in town. It’ll be the most expensive meal I’ll have ever eaten. So I was wondering what others had spent. That’s all. Yes, I too have had amazing meals that cost very little. I’ve also spent a little more at times for a meal I was less impressed by. That’s why I also followed up my inquiry with ‘was it worth it?’. So I ask you, what was the most expensive meal you’ve ever eaten? If you don’t want to answer, fine, find another thread to comment on.

Most I ever spent was about $475, for three people... and it came with a little buyers remorse lol.
Landed in Niagara Falls and found ourselves walking down the street, famished. Saw a Ruth Chris across the street and said "screw it". I don't mind spending money and knew it would be expensive but it's how everything played out...
Looked over the menu and saw that there were two prices listed... US and CAD. I'm pretty quick with math and saw that a lot of the US prices were much lower than the exchange rate would dictate. This actually dictated a few of my choices. Had a great meal and a couple glasses of wine and waited for the bill.
$560! As I'm looking at the bill I immediately thought - no big deal, I'll tell her I'm paying in US and get it adjusted. I also noticed a charge at the bottom for "NFDF" and it calculated to over 10%. I'm thinking "can this be an included gratuity? I'll ask". Then I see a province tax and city sales tax amounting to about 13%.
Waitress comes and I let here know that the entree prices were also listed in US and that's what I would be paying, I asked her to adjust it. She replied, "Oh, those aren't actual prices, they're just for reference." Reference? You know you're in Canada and the prices were all over the board in relation to the exchange rate! I then gently asked about the NFDF, at which point she seemed irritated (capping off what was incredibly average service). "That's the Niagara Falls Destination Fee, they charge it at all places in Niagara Falls" (they don't, it's a basic cash grab that allows businesses to tack on whatever they want).
Good times! Wish I would have spent the money at Ruth Chris in CTown!

Those kinds of add on fees are garbage. Places that automatically tack on a 10% ‘gratuity’ to parties of 5 or more, or what not. Is it really a gratuity if it’s being forced? How about you let the service quality decide the tip? Otherwise pay your staff out of your establishment’s pocket when they serve larger parties, or call it a service fee. It’s certainly not a gratuity.
Definition of gratuity plural gratuities : something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service

It really doesn't, i mean i have had 50-100 dollar plates, and they were ok, but i can walk into a local Japanese hibachi by where i live, and for 22 bucks a plate you will get the freshest shrimp and scallops you will ever eat.

That sucks, too, because you're a well-thought, rational guy whose posts I generally enjoy...but why on earth would you interject with that demeaning post? That's beneath you.

Well I finally had dinner last night at Langbaan. Wow. Words can not do justice to how incredibly good the food was. I’ve never been so blown away. Breathtaking. 11 courses. The second course is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. It brought laughter to the table as we all sat, mouths full, in awe. In elated shock over just how good it was. The soup... I can’t even. The mussels...smoky spicy....Wow. No hyperbole, this meal at times nearly brought tears of joy to my eyes. Here’s a link to last nights dinner menu. It is a set menu. Everything on the menu was brought to our table. The menu changes monthly. https://langbaanpdx.com/menu/So, to the thread title. It wasn’t cheap. By far the most expensive meal I’ve ever eaten. Table of four $414. Part of this was $73 worth of wine/beer. Certainly not something I can afford to do regularly...at all. But I will go back again one day. I felt it was worth every penny.

I was looking for this thread the other day. It was my anniversary and we tried a new restaurant. I ended up paying about 160.00 for the two of us, not crazy (I don't think) but certainly not cheap.
We went to Luke Wholeys in Pittsburgh. We ordered two apps, a sushi roll that was absolutely breathtaking. For the Pittsburgh area, its was the freshest fish I ever had. We then had lobster bisque fries which I could have done with or with out. My wife loved them, and I thought they were ok.
We both ordered the special of the night. Lobster risotto with spinach, and two dueling soft shell crabs. I was torn on it. I thought it was good, but I certainly did not think it was worth the price of each plate (40 per plate).
Which is my one of my biggest pet peeves, some places it seems tend to think if they charge more, the meal is better. Its just not the case. I would give this another go as the sushi was terrific, but if the meal was just good again, and not great, then I wouldn't go back.

I went looking for this thread the other day to add my update. I had originally started the thread the day after I was able to get reservations to Langbaan. When I went searching for the thread it took a bit as I hadn’t remembered I called for reservations way back in January. The first table for four was on 5/25. Last Friday. I’d forgotten it took 5 months to get a table. I was thinking it was only a 3 month wait. Wow. Still worth it. So so worth it. My God it was good. Beautiful food.

I have determined that I want to come to dinner with PortlandDawg. We, my girlfriend and I, dined with another couple at Langbaan. A co worker and her husband. It was the first time we’d had dinner with them. The first time any of us had eaten at such a very high end place. My coworker’s husband, native Mexican, was a bit aprehensive about some of the menu items. Such as cuttlefish ink soup. I reminded him that growing up he probably ate things that would make non native Mexicans a little squicked out. He laughed and agreed. Then we all proceeded to be blown away each course that was brought to our table. We all had an amazing time and have decided to make dining out together at the nicer places around town an event 3 or 4 times a year. I’ve eaten at many of the better restaurants in Portland. My exwife and I use to fine dine fairly regularly. It’s been 7 years since my divorce. I hadn't eaten at a high end restaurant since, until Langbaan. It woke something up in my girlfriend and table mates. Thankfully. Now I have the chance to start going back to some of the better places in town. Higgin’s, Clark Lewis, Gruner... Well Eve if you ever find yourself in the Pac NW let me know.
