Magnitude 8.2 quake off Alaska prompts tsunami warning

Jan 23 - A magnitude 8.2 earthquake hit the Gulf of Alaska in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting authorities to warn people in the area to move away from the coast in case it causes a tsnuami.

The quake hit 256 km (157 miles) southeast of Chiniak, Alaska at a depth of 10 km at 0931 GMT, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

"If you are located in this coastal area, move inland to higher ground. Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is possible or is already occurring," Anchorage Office of Emergency Management said in a warning for Alaska and British Columbia.

Tsunami warnings for parts of Alaska and Canada and a tsunami watch for the entire U.S. west coast and Hawaii were issued.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Japan's meteorological agency said it was monitoring the situation but did not issue a tsunami alert. (Writing by Robin Pomeroy; editing by John Stonestreet)

The survival rate down in the main streets must have been very low.

Must have been something for the people up on that hill to watch their town utterly destroyed and dozens if not hundreds killed.

To make matters worse, it must have been winter time. The people are wearing jackets and coats.

Getting woken up at 3:30 am by family to hear about a potential tsunami is lots of fun...

I'm safe. The warning didn't impact my coastal areas of Alaska.

It beats being woken up by crashing water against your face.

Nice to hear you're all safe! thumbsup

Sorry, the comment was made with little to no sleep after being woken up.

I am thankful for family who called to check in on me.

Well, you know, it could be worse. You could have woken up to a text that NK was nuking you, and prepare to die.

Just saying.

That's what I was expecting when I answered the phone.

I'm not sure who'd nuke the far reaches of tiny little Alaska Native communities. Anchorage and Fairbanks both contain military bases, so I'm guessing those two places would end up as the big targets in our state.

Next time just keep a couple of Canadian Whiskey’s and Coke at the ready. If you’re going to be up that early you may as well enjoy it!

I think you forgot the part about where I live is dry. No alcohol allowed, yo.

Plus I would have to work later.

The bar lobby must be paying out like crazy to keep those places dry.

I was on the island of Haiti/ Republica Dominicana when that earthquake hit in 2010

The unfortunate Christmas tsunami in 2004 is a reality of living on planet earth. I would stress a better tsunami warning system across the pacific rim, if only for a human life.
