It's sad but I have to believe that if nobody ever fell for it, these people would stop doing it.. if it don't work, they'd stop..
Unfortunatly, I think some people do fall for it.. I understand that it's the older folks that fall for this more than anyone else.
My Mom (81 years young I might add) gets this stuff all the time on her email.. She always asks me about it and I take care of it pretty quick. I've tried to protect her with spybots and other software designed to catch this stuff, but it keeps getting through.. I can't put too many restrictions on her computer or I'd be down there every couple of hours...
So it's a catch-22 to some degree..
Best advice I can give is if your parents have email, just kinda keep an eye out for them.. probably the best you can do,,, cause if your parents are anything like my mom,,, she'll kick my butt if I try to watch too close

Elderly people do fall for it. Some people down on their luck have to and there have been cases where people have traveled to Nigeria and have been kidnapped. It seems like a no brainer that it's a scam to us but you would be amazed at how ignorant some people are to this kind of stuff. My yahoo e-mail gets seriously 10 a day. It's so annoying. The newer ones now say they are soldiers in Iraq Once I messed with them and led them on to see how far I could get but all I think it did was open the flood gates since they knew now my e-mail was active . I got the idea from scamming the scammer

I've heard of people setting up the scammers,,, haven't really seen anyone do it successfully yet. Dateline NBC has been working on stuff like this for a short while.. They did catch a guy in NYC that was a scammer,,, it was a little while ago so I don't remember the details.
If you want to try that, I'd suggest that you set up an email account specifically for that purpose...then close it out when you have accomplished what you want to do.

Pshaaaa ... I already have that money coming my way. 
I also re-registered all of my bank accounts ...... even the ones with the 20 or so banks I have received emails from, but don't have accounts with.

My Dad, when he was in his later years, would receive junk in the mail saying he won a new car or somesuch other big ticket prize. He would show them to me and I would read and read and read until I found the disclaimer in small print that proved the whole thing crap to his satisfaction. Nonetheless, every time he'd get one of these he'd be convinced this one was for real. On the other hand, we have those like YTown who hits it big and becomes rich for doing nothing but sending an innocent email while having no idea he was entering a sweepstakes. Lucky stiff.

These letters come from scammers in Africa(true) who try to get bank info. and have you pay "insurance" to cover for sending you the prize check. There's even one with a Coca-Cola logo saying that your e-mail address was picked from a random computer program of e-mail addresses. There have been cases where people sent their addresses and followed through with the scam and then they found out it was a scam and then got threatening e-mails and phone calls. Just look up "Coca-Cola Sweepstakes Scam" on Google.
