Cleveland Indians are dropping the Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms
Beginning in 2019, the team's jerseys will no longer feature the Native American caricature, which has been widely characterized as offensive and racist. The change was announced Monday by Major League Baseball.
The Indians had already been shifting away from using the symbol. The team adopted a "C" as its main logo in recent years.
The Chief Wahoo symbol, however, was still stitched onto their uniforms.
"Over the past year, we encouraged dialogue with the Indians organization about the club's use of the Chief Wahoo logo," MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.
"During our constructive conversations, Paul Dolan made clear that there are fans who have a longstanding attachment to the logo and its place in the history of the team. Nonetheless, the club ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan's acknowledgement that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course." http://money.cnn.com/2018/01/29/news/companies/chief-wahoo-cleveland-indians/index.html

I really wonder what the average Native thinks of the whole thing. Not the people who show up and protest, who may or may not have an agenda outside of simply asking to have the logo removed. I'd be curious to hear what they thought.
Me personally, I don't care either way. I'm ok with them removing it and sticking with the block "C". What I would really like to see is the team reach out to Native Americans who have ties to tribes in the area, and come up with a resolution.
I believe this happened with Miami of Ohio. The University reached out to the Miami Tribe, and worked with them to change their name from Redskins. They are now known, as we all know, the Miami Redhawks, and it has the tribe's blessing. I think if the team could do something like that, it would be beneficial from all ends of the spectrum. Re-branding with a new cool logo, bringing positive attention to Native Americans, and keeping away both idiot protesters, and the morons who show up with their faces painted (at least that would be the hope)

Agreed. I don't think they needed to go to the "C." I think it would have been best to create a logo that honored Native Americans rather than mock them.
Glad they got rid of it and I am not sad to see it go. Why it won't disappear this season, seems odd. Why wait? Just do it and move forward.
As long as they keep the name "Indians" then going to a block 'C' and cursive 'I' is a good first step. I suspect most/any attempts to "honor" would still be reducing a group of oppressed people to a stereotype. Especially if the design firm is a bunch of over privileged white dudes making the decisions, which no doubt it would be.
Atlanta got rid of their caricature/stereotype long ago. Not sure why it has taken Cleveland this long. Washington need to change their name completely.

The logo has never offended me. It offends me they cave in to PC nonsense. Everything offends everyone these days. I gave up caring about offending all the thin skinned ninnies a long time ago.

God help you if you have to go into the foodstamp office where everyone gives you that look that says, "Your white, you have no business being here." Then suffer while the "social workers" do everything they can to be as hostile as possible, investigate you 10 times more often, screw with your coverage as an excuse to make you lose a week of benefits because they made a mistake. It offends non Yankees. it is not inclusive, nor does it mean the PC standard. Yankee is a derogatory term used by southerners.
