I don't see why the Eagles would trade Foles with Carson Wentz coming off a major injury.

Can they afford to pay him if he plays well or beats NE in SB?

Then again, if he beats NE we may have to pay him 200mil to come here for 10 years!

Holy crap:

The #Redskins gave QB Alex Smith a 4-year extension worth $94M, source said. He gets a whopping $71M in guarantees.

What is Washington doing? They could have just given Kirk Cousins that money! And they had to give up a draft pick and a player!

Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo, and any other starting calibur free agent QB should send Washington a thank you note.

Chiefs agree to trade quarterback Alex Smith to Redskins
10:27 PM ET

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, league sources confirmed to ESPN's Field Yates.

Smith and the Redskins reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith will average $23.5 million per year in new money on the four-year extension with approximately $70 million in guaranteed money on the agreement in principle between the two sides, league sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The deal cannot be completed until the new league year begins March 14. It is expected to be for a third-round pick and an unidentified player, according to ESPN sources.

At least six other teams expressed some form of interest in Smith.

Smith, who had one year left on his contract, is tied to Washington for the next five seasons.

Smith is getting a long-term deal from Washington that former Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins could not.

The KC Star first reported the news.

JC...

I knew KC wouldnt torment Alex Smith by trading him to Cleveland, good news is Kirk Cousins will be available without having to trade or lose picks for. He will get a really big pay day...

I know someone mentioned Denver as a landing spot for Cousins. I'm sure that Denver is high on his list as well...I read a blurb where Denver is strapped and have a ton of FAs hitting the market...And of course they will cut Talib to free money...They will be in play, as I see them releasing Demaryious Thomas in addition.

They will definitely be in a cap crunch, but I'd try to hang on to Foles as long as possible.

Then he's an idiot and he'll suffer. No skin off our nose, really.

I've even seen talk that someone like Denver or the Jags will make a play - sure, it'll happen by having to cast off existing players before foregoing the possibility to sign future free agents, but that's always an option to go to a "winner."

The difference between us and the "winners" is they've got existing talent. We've got the assets, cap space and developing talent to become a winner. They've got their team, but won't have it for long. It will be a very different landscape across the other options.

You think Jimmy Garappolo has regrets? Nah. He's joined a team on their way up, not on their way out.

Personally, I love it, because we're not being held hostage. Cousins doesn't want to play for the Browns? I'll be sure to cry in to my Josh Rosen jersey as we amass talent around him.

Denver can open up cap space pretty easily. Thomas has an opt out (which he will probably take), Aqib Talib can be cut to save $10 million, C.J. Anderson can be cut to save $4.5 million, Domata Peko $3.2 million, etc.

That was quick:

Cleveland attempted to trade for Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Chiefs instead are sending the quarterback to Washington.

John Dorsey probably should have stayed at work past 5PM.

If that was the price to sign Alex Smith to an extension, I am so glad we didn't trade for him.

Well, that's too bad.

Wish I knew what we offered. And I wonder what player the Redskins are giving up with the third round pick

I'm not sure anyone would call a player an idiot for not wanting to come to an 0-16 team... except a fan of that 0-16 team.

I get what you're saying. And I agree with you on the state of the browns, but we're fans, not players.

Also, no need to cry in your Giants Rosen jersey when you can be happy in your Browns Mayfield jersey.

I think it was pretty obvious that Washington got sick of Cousins' annual routine of holding them hostage. People talk about Hue throwing Hue under the bus, but Gruden recently trashed Cousins in the media.

They were done w/him and wanted to move on. Time will tell if they made the right choice or not.

Kendall Fuller is the player.

On the other hand, the Browns fire people constantly. There is no stability. And posters such as yourself have been openly campaigning for Hue to be fired. Why would a good qb want to come to a team where the coach will probably be fired?

You guys keep on w/your crusade to get Hue fired. It's very helpful in regards to our future.

If Kendall Fuller is, in fact, the other player in the Alex Smith trade, it would be an incredible haul do KC.

Fuller was the No. 1 rated slot defender in the #NFL1000 this season.

But before Browns fans draw the conclusion that Cousins will come here to save the day, he stressed in interviews with Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com and Jim Rome that his No. 1 priority is winning.

"Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No," Cousins told Florio. "It's about winning, and that's what I want more than anything. So I'm going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I'm in the best possible position to win, and that's what the focus is going to be."

Cousins echoed those sentiments on The Jim Rome Show in the afternoon, hours before news of the trade agreement broke.

"Ultimately this decision going forward is about winning games,'' Cousins said. "I've had an opportunity to earn a good living playing football, so I want to go win. That can be Washington. It really can. (Winning is) what I'll be remembered for. That's what's going to matter.''

I know. But, Cousins has hinted he would go to the right team for less. I don't know the Broncos well enough to say if they are in a place to be 8-8 with Cousins or could he immediately come in and transform them to be instant competitors in the AFCW.

Just asking.

You react way too early on things. Good QB play is a must in the NFL. If Washington knew they were losing Cousins, then this might not be quite the steal that you think it is.

Also, you are same guy who has made a bunch of dumb ass statements, such as the one about how Jax was screwed because they hired Coughlin.

With all that said..............I don't know who won the deal. I think it might be best to wait and evaluate later.

Okay............I was wondering if I misunderstood your question.

I really don't know the answer, PDX. I think [but do not know] that Denver is pretty close and have been hindered by poor qb play.

Thus, I think Cousins would be a huge addition for them. But again, I'm not certain.

Agreed.

We really don't know how toxic the relationship between Cousins and the Redskins Organization as a whole is.

Smith isn't that old (34 this year). For all we know he could play 4 more years or more

That division is up in the air. No one knows how Patrick Mahomes will do, the whole Jon Gruden thing could be a disaster, and Phillip Rivers is 36 years old. Having a good QB is better than having Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, and/or Paxton Lynch starting.

My 26yr old nephew who was born and raised in KC (but now lives in Boston) is a die hard Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks fan. He truly believes Mahomes will be a superstar. He loves this trade. But, obviously none of us have seen Mahomes in true competition. Nevertheless, Mahomes will be super happy tonight and he is now the official starter, Smith super rich and DC bound (and clearly wanted) meanwhile Cousins will be super angry and ready to pack his bags.

Definitely. They have over $50 million in cap space and not many key pieces to re-sign.

Why? They already have four QBs there and 3 will be looking to be paid and signed somewhere. Might as well keep one or even two of them up there.

All three guys (Case Keenum, Sam Bradford, and Teddy Bridgewater) are unrestricted free agents. If I were them, I'd franchise tag Keenum, especially considering the money QBs are going to get this off-season, and then go after Kirk Cousins once tampering starts. If they get Cousins, rescind the franchise tag on Keenum.

Sounds reasonable.

Yes, technically Minnesota doesn't have any QBs for the upcoming year.

I would hope that we put together a plan as to what we hope to accomplish in both the draft and free agency, and ask Cousins what he would want to see in order to come here. (players, etc) If he comes here, I think that we could attract receiver help, and so forth ... in addition to more help in the draft.

I think that a great plan can help. Will it be enough? Who knows? But at least make the guy consider us.

Vers, I am a Hue fan and desperately want him to be successful. So, even if that did happen I would keep an open mind as Hue knows McCarron better than anybody. If Hue truly believed AJ was the vet to bring into our QB room to work with our rookie and Kizer...until proven otherwise, I would have to put some faith in him.

Nevertheless things just got really intriguing.

It is hard to think that Cousins would choose Cleveland if he has a choice. The next few weeks should be very interesting. I wonder how much Andy Reid had to do with KC not trading Smith to Cleveland and Dorsey.

Matt Miller thinks there is a real chance that they didn't want Smith in the AFC. Not exactly a hot take, but that's commonly a major concern of the coach, where as the FO is more likely to consider overall value.

Reid's biggest input was likely the question that set the trade in motion - Is Mahomes ready to be a starting QB?

I'm guessing Reid thinks so.
