Other than the agendas, I don't get the comparison of not landing Smith to not getting Jimmy G.
Smith is 34. Jimmy G is 26.
Smith was due to make $17 million next year. JG was set to become a FA.
The compensation for the two players was from different planets. KC got a ton in return for Smith, while SF only gave up a 2nd round pick for Jimmy G.
Comparing the two situations is stupid or a dishonest attempt to compare Sashi and Dorsey.
Perhaps Dorsey showed some interest in Smith, but thought that what he had to give up in return was too high of a price for a 34 year old qb who only had one year left on his contract and was set to make $17 million?
Seems to me like Washington got burned by the deal. I would have been ticked off if Dorsey made a better offer.
A 3rd, the 6th best corner and then commits to a huge guaranteed extension for Alex Smith? Too much. It would have just been a lot easier to sign/franchise Cousins.
Damn.
Plus, I wanted nothing to do with old Alex Smith.

agreed, two very different sets of circumstances
That said, it's hard to fault Sashi for the Jimmy G (non) trade. If Sashi is at fault for that, then it was for screwing things up so badly (1 win in 2 seasons) that the player and agent (who also happens to be Tom Brady's agent) wanted nothing to do with coming here, and Belichick couldn't, in good faith, send JG here after he had been such a team player for 3.5 years. Or maybe Belichick just wanted to send him to the NFC, or maybe ESPN got something right for a change and Kraft ordered the trade... who knows. I'm sure Sashi would have beaten the offer for Jimmy G if he had the chance to.
Jimmy G is on the upswing of his career. Alex Smith, who I like, is not trending up. Maybe holding steady for a couple years, but not up. I didn't get that comparison either.
Plus, we might have actually won a game. I mean, we're in the records as like the second 0-16 team ever............. Quite embarassing

Money-wise easier. But FA isn't just about tossing money at a player. I think you've also gotta convince the player that you're their best destination.
Not everyone is Kevin Zeitler in that regard.
I don't think it's as easy as just offering hte most amount of money to get any player you want.
That's why guys like Free Agency. They get to go out, shop around and find the best team, contract, place to live, for them and their family.
I mean, Kirk Cousins is married. His wife is from Georgia. Maybe she doesn't want to move to snowy Cleveland...... Arizona might be a nicer destination to her.
Cousins was quoted as saying he would take less money to go to a winner. Money could talk, or we would need to convince him we're a winner, but it doesn't sound like Cousins is thinking Cleveland.
Then he's an idiot and he'll suffer. No skin off our nose, really.
I've even seen talk that someone like Denver or the Jags will make a play - sure, it'll happen by having to cast off existing players before foregoing the possibility to sign future free agents, but that's always an option to go to a "winner."
The difference between us and the "winners" is they've got existing talent. We've got the assets, cap space and developing talent to become a winner. They've got their team, but won't have it for long. It will be a very different landscape across the other options.
You think Jimmy Garappolo has regrets? Nah. He's joined a team on their way up, not on their way out.
Personally, I love it, because we're not being held hostage. Cousins doesn't want to play for the Browns? I'll be sure to cry in to my Josh Rosen jersey as we amass talent around him.
The Vikings have the third highest cap space in the league. Although it is close to half of what we have.
At QB they have major injury risks and a career backup who will most likely go get overpaid elsewhere.

I am not faulting Sashi right now. He's been fired. He's gone. I get that his fan club can't let go, but I have. He's gone.
I am just saying that the two players involved in this conversation are very different.

Agreed. That's the thing that people often miss. These are real people making these decisions, and they look at things like this is their life, their career, and their legacy at stake. Obviously money factors in, but a lot of times the money is a pretty similar.

For the record, I think Sashi did a pretty horrible job. I just don't think he's to blame for missing out on Jimmy G.
Agreed that the two players (and circumstances) in this conversation are very different.
cause we all know the Redskins are ready to win this. If Alex decided wash.cause he thinks they are a winner...he has serious concussion issues. Point blank it was the 70 mil
Iwant Drew Brees n Mayfield as our 1,2 QB next year

Sashi actually did beat the offer. Offered a first and then some... Patriots said no.
When? mid 2017 season or before the 2017 season started?
I understand we offered the first before 2017, but we talked to them prior to the trade deadline mid 2017. Not sure what the offer was then because we didn't have the 12th pick any more.

The Browns missed on another quarterback.
Cleveland attempted to trade ( LINK ) for Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The Chiefs instead are sending the quarterback to Washington.
Smith, a three-time Pro Bowler, made sense for new Browns General Manager John Dorsey. Dorsey traded for Smith when he became G.M. of the Chiefs in 2013.
The Chiefs, though, may have wanted to get Smith out of the AFC and away from Dorsey.
Smith scoffed at a possible deal to Cleveland during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show earlier Tuesday.
“I haven’t even thought about that,” Smith said. “They’ve got nowhere to go but up. 1-31 over the last two years just sounds amazing.”
It now makes sense since he knew he likely was headed to Washington rather than Cleveland.
The good news for the Browns, if they are so inclined, is Kirk Cousins will hit the open market in March.

Alex was traded. It was the Chiefs decision where he would go.
I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.
That seems to be a misleading statement. Considering what KC got in return for Smith and the fact that he had only one year left on his contract....I don't know if the word "missed" can be applied.
I really thought we would get Alex Smith. Hot damn! Hopefully we can get another quality vet and then pick up the best QB in the draft, take it from there.
Outside of Cousins, are there any quality vets available? Sure, there are 'journyman' QB's on the market and this is likely what we would have to settle for. Our rookie draftee may be seeing playing time sooner than we expect...
As long as it isn't Kizer starting. I don't know if I could even watch that again?

Considering what Alex Smith did for my fantasy team the last third of the season, I'd go with "dodged a bullet".
Always remember, Cousins in 2015 asked for 19M per, with 44M guaranteed over life of four-year deal. Skins said no, then tagged him back to back years (20M, 24M). #OnlyInWashington
Also, for some minor consolation for Washington-- Kirk Cousins is going to sign a mega deal somewhere. The Redskins will likely get a 3rd round compensatory pick back because of it.

Unless Washington has some FA signings of their own....
saw the tape after writing that. Confused though would not the premise that Smith chosed the Redskins over the Browns be questioned rather than my rebuttle.

Amen, they gave 3rd, a good/YOUNG defender, and truck load of money for his services....WOW, QBs are expensive....too much for my blood....GO Browns!!!

I've seen multiple posts (with no official linkage) on Facebook saying the Chiefs demanded either Kirksey or Collins as part of a trade for Alex Smith.
Take it with a grain of salt. Maybe there's fire to go w/ a little smoke? If true, I'm glad we don't have Alex Smith.

It all factors in. If Washington turns out to be net losers in free agency, they'll still net about a 3rd round pick in value. If they're net gainers in free agency, then they won't get anything. It's a convoluted formula and the NFL has never released the specifics, but some fan sites have done a decent enough job of reverse-engineering it. A lot of it just comes down to dollars in vs dollars out.

I don't know but I can't imagine either player would have hung up the trade?
Maybe it's a good thing I'm not the GM. "Oh, you want Kirksey or Collins? Ok. We'll send you Kirksey and Collins."
Agreed. I think AJ will be the best bet to come here out of the available QB's now that AS has been traded. Hue knows him and is familiar with AJ. Whether we like it or not AJ is a good bet to become a Brown and he may actually want to come here because of Hue and a chance to be a starting QB.
I think Smith had far more control over this trade than some would like to consider. I mean sure there are rumors about what we did or didn't offer, but one thing to me is clear.
Smith HAD TO AGREE to a long term deal with the team he was traded to for such a deal to work.
Nobody is going to give up that type of compensation for a QB on a one year deal. All Smith had to do is refuse to sign a long term contract with the team the Chiefs were negotiating with and all bets are off.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Nail on the head. That's exactly how players determine their next home. Even just saying he doesn't want to discuss a long term deal has a huge effect on compensation. Saying he will not sign a long term deal basically kills the trade. We don't know what happened in this situation but AS certainly had plenty of chips in front of him when the dealing started.
I wonder how hard we tried for Smith. Is this the first fail of the young Dorsey era?
I don't think it's a fail. My bet is that we were not willing to give the Chiefs much for Alex Smith. Ideally he would be the starter for one season. What is that worth? A late round pick? Washington gave up a third round pick and a very valuable player, there was no way we were ever matching that.
The biggest question is was Smith willing to sign a long term deal with the Browns. Nobody was going to match that kind of offer if Smith wasn't going to sign a contract extension.

I doubt that Cousins is in the mix. He will have better offers that fit what he wants.
Somebody from the Vikings will be available. There are other options including Foles.
We will take a quarterback with the first pick. And it is not likely that the veteran we sign will take us to a championship. He is just filling in till the draft pick or Kizer is ready.
What is important is who we take in the draft and the free agents that we sign.
1. What is substantial? 2. If we did make a "substantial" offer for a one year starter, then I would be very worried about the people running the team. 3. I don't think a "substantial" offer was made.

The way Alex Smith jeered about coming to the Browns on the Dan Patrick show yesterday, I'd say a long term deal was unlikely.
